…joke title aside… I wanted to share a few NaruMitsu fanfictions that are slightly lesser known! I love Legal Partners as much as the next fan, but I thought it would be a great idea to share some new works to put onto your bookmarks bar.

One-Shots

Postscript by CantFaketheFunk and Aria/Raelle (Court Records Forums) A gorgeous, simple slice-of-life story revolving Edgeworth and Wright learning a little bit more about what they mean to each other, all thanks to a double date with Larry… and Iris? Established Narumitsu, past Iris/Phoenix is an important plotpoint, and not-really Larry/Iris. Characterisation is well-done.

Your Secret Admirer by snorkellingfish (FFnet) Very cute, short letterfic in which Edgeworth writes love letters to Wright.

The Correct Way by VIII of XIII (FFnet) * (mostly just suggestive content but marking just in case) Humour fic in which Wright rejects Edgeworth. He demands to know why, and the answer isn’t what he was expecting.

Where The Heart Is by hanae0711 (LJ) With an introspective, calmly-paced writing style, the writer captures a family dynamic between Wright, Trucy, and Edgeworth. 

That Other Kind of Dance by Ellcrys (FFnet) Also known as “pantswarrior” on AO3, this user has written well-known Narumitsu pieces such as Surviving You and Trucy’s Daddy. Not everything is written by this person is on AO3, and some may not be aware of the existence of their other pieces. 

Good Company by Northernflicker (AO3) If you’re in need of a sad, bittersweet fanfic, here’s a short NaruMitsu AU that’ll satisfy. In a modern setting, Edgeworth copes with regret over the things he should have said.

Change by kiyala (AO3) Iris struggles to accept that things change, and Edgeworth needs to realise that things don’t have to.

Night Lights by Anon2015 (AO3) Wright thought things were just fine as is, until he bore witness to another world where things were better than fine.

Sorry Doesn’t Cut It (When You Don’t Need To Say It) by GahoolianGirl (AO3) Canon divergent Trucy and Wright fic, plotpoint Narumitsu. Wright feels remorse over the things he couldn’t have given to his daughter. She thinks he gave enough.

The Stars Above by Tarma_Hartley (AO3) Good old Regency-era!NaruMitsu. 

Simple by VickyVicarious (AO3) A simple fic that shows how even though certain things are complicated for Wright and Edgeworth, one thing certainly isn’t.

I, In the Art of the Compromise by Quitebrilliantindeed (AO3) Franziska-centric. Who knew how much buried emotions could surface upon hearing the news of Wright and Edgeworth’s engagement?

The Answer is Just Like Heaven by Lyrical Rawr (FFnet) In which Larry drags Edgeworth to a bar, and he’s just a little slow to catch on the exact nature of the relationship his two childhood friends have.

the words unspoken, we’ll be there soon by jonphaedrus (AO3) Mountaineering canon-deviation. Wright and Edgeworth meet again, not as attorneys, but as mountain climbers, braving the elements.

Freefall by estelraca (AO3) Being together with Wright is wonderful. Now, if only Edgeworth could share this fact without feeling fearful.

Keeping in Character by fuzzybees (AO3) Edgeworth and Trucy share a phone call.

Thoughts about the ‘Demon Prosecutor’ & ‘That Man’ by nerdowl (AO3) Poem fic that develops alongside Wright and Edgeworth’s thoughts about each other.

Periphrasis by EvilEkat (AO3) Four birds that Edgeworth comes to associate with Wright, aside from the obvious one.

Lux by organicgold (AO3) The use of diction and a motif of light in this story brings a comfortable realisation of feelings.

The Turning of the Tides by altairattorney (AO3) Introspective writing in Edgeworth’s point of view. Conveys very heavy emotion and resolution.

and down came the rain by The Soup (FFnet) Ambiguous timeline. Wright and Edgeworth slowly come to realise what has been there all along.

Incomplete or Ongoing

Call Me by Erstaz Writer (FFnet) - incomplete Anything by this writer is amazing. I selected this one particularly because of this author’s very insightful portrayal of Edgeworth’s character. The plot is as vanilla fanfic as you can get: main characters get drunk, share a drunken kiss and awkward conversations, both of them remember the next day but never talk about it; rather, it is the characters that truly give this story life.

My Oath, My Vendetta, My Vow by Cupcakitee (AO3) - ongoing In an alternate universe, the ghost of Gregory Edgeworth follows his son, unable to do anything about his transformation into the “Demon Prosecutor,” until Maya reveals his presence thanks to her spiritual powers. Slow-burn NaruMitsu in the background.

Struggling Against Gravity by musouka and Aria/Raelle (AO3) - ongoing A favourite with those who remember the Objection! Archive. To those who have not been in the fandom that long ago, this work is a story that explores the relationships Wright has with the important people in his life: Edgeworth and Maya. He learns more about himself and others in the wake of accompanying his prosecutor friend to dinner one night.

1001 Times by Pomelofangirl (AO3) - ongoing Written in a very unique style, and organised in even more so. This AU involves time traveling Wright and mistakes. It also has an immortal entity Edgeworth and fixing them.

Apollo of Notre Dame by Farris (AO3) - ongoing The Hunchback of Notre Dame AU, with a few twists! If you’re looking for an AU to follow until it’s complete, let Farris be your guide. (Don’t let the Apollo/Phoenix tag bother you, as per the original story, the endgame should be Miles/Phoenix.)

Our Thoughts Were Wicked by Design by VivaRocksteady (AO3) - ongoing The writing style of this work pairs very fittingly with the AU that takes place in an Ancient Rome setting. It’s a loose retelling of the trilogy series.

The Ghost of Edgeworth Manor by FyreBird_risefromtheashes (AO3) - incomplete A manor, a family of six, and a ghost who haunts the manor. This family quickly figures out that the one most haunted by the past is the ghost himself.

Wright and Prejudice by lalabnf (AO3) - ongoing? Pride and Prejudice AU. Wright is a barrister who just wants a case, but when company arrives from Germany, they bring along an old friend.

Correspondence by ingthing (AO3) - incomplete Victorian AU. A soldier and a law student meet at a party.

Completed

One of Every Color by Croik (FFnet) - 85k * I recommend all of this user’s Ace Attorney fanfics, but this one stands out as The NaruMitsu fic they’ve written. A casefic in which Wright must come to terms with a difficult client and his growing feelings for Edgeworth.

And Baby Makes Six by withpractice_ff (AO3) - 21k * Set in a time where the true identity of Apollo and Trucy is revealed, Wright lives with Thalassa and her children. One frustrating night, he ends up sleeping with Thalassa and gets her pregnant despite being in a relationship with Edgeworth. Everybody must now figure out how to deal with this complicated situation.

King of Hearts by Pearls1975 (AO3) - 6k Mildly canon-divergent. Edgeworth and Wright had gotten engaged at some point, but the incident leading to the seven-year gap leaves them separated. This doesn’t change the fact that they remain dear to each other’s hearts.

Locked Hearts and Hidden Voices by flybykeylimepie (AO3) - 11k This writer pulls off the second-person narrative well in this piece. While staying in Germany with Edgeworth, Wright meets a girl named Athena Cykes, who is able to look into his heart. Using her psychological abilities as a medium, this story gives an insightful perspective into Wright’s mind while he was disbarred.

Birthday Family Dinner by InvaderHam (AO3) - 7k Celebrating a birthday is best done with loved ones, and there is nothing short of beloved friends and family with Wright and Edgeworth.

Congratulations by (orphan_account) (AO3) - 4k Hurt/comfort fic. Edgeworth experiences just a fraction of what Kristoph is capable of.

Cold Harbor by Tarma_Hartley (AO3) - 4k A touching Civil War Narumitsu AU. Need I say any more? …actually yeah, have some comics of this story too.

Looming Truths by AsunderWolf (AO3) - 356k * The sheer size of this piece might scare some readers, but if you’re into long stories, it’s a must-read. Weaving in more in-depth character motives, incredible backstories, and an underlying plot that explores darker themes than Capcom allows, this story attempts to fill in the gaps of the unexplored details we were left puzzled over in canon. Every character is thoughtfully portrayed, leaving no doubt in this writer’s characterisation. There is so much in here, so just give it a go.

Phoenix’s Inferno by prospectkiss (AO3) - 9k Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, the end result is an epic-style poem that has a very creative use of the Seven Deadly Sins and Heavenly Virtues. Did I mention there is a classic Wright-way turnabout?

The Glass of Paradise by gogollescent (AO3) 18k Great dialogue, great use of diction and syntax, and Wright’s inner-voice is spot on. Though this is predominantly a character study, it has all the elements that make up a narrative.

Honourable Mentions (not NaruMitsu, but highly recommended) 

The Realm by Farris (AO3) - ongoing Very creative use of a psychological/spiritual setting in order to share a narrative of characters confronting their internal conflicts. There are mentions of one-sided Iris/Phoenix on Iris’ part, but also includes some very subtle Edgeworth/Wright scenes.

Follow the Fool by CantFaketheFunk (FFnet) - complete A lovely FranDrian fanfiction that takes place after 2-4/Engarde case. Explores the dynamic both of these characters have with each other in order to overcome their past shadows.

Allowances by Lerayl (FFnet) Wright and Franziska wait for Edgeworth to return overseas in the airport. Ambiguous/implied NaruMitsu.

My piece for the @aa-spring-swap! I love a nice fandom exchange when the time permits it. This gift is for @krowmanticism, who gave the prompt:

this one's totally insane and self indulgent, but i've been thinking about an aa4 ghost trick au with vera misham as the protagonist, who communicates with the living through paintings!! it'd be so cool to see what someone might come up for this. :]]

Vera's a side character I'm really fond of but haven't done anything with before, so I thought this would be fun to work on. It definitely was! More below the cut.

I think there's a lot of good potential here I could probably spend a month straight just jotting down notes for how this would all work narratively and logistically. So I just put together some fun conversational snippets until I ran out of space in tumblr's image limit.

Sprites and backgrounds are here should anyone want to play with these toys themselves.

Working on the background was probably the trickiest part; originally I wanted to try and redraw the drew studios background in the ghost trick style, but I realized pretty quickly I wouldn't be able to finish something like that within the time constraints for this event, so I tried to collage a little something together out of the actual game's assets. It was a bit finnicky but I feel like it came together well! Hope you enjoy!

1) Mitte by sunsmasher

Rating: M Words: 4,693 Time to read: 10 min

This fic takes a more cynical look at love but oh, the end scene is perfect, and stays with you for a looooong while. I think I've reread it at least 4-5 times. It was one of the fics that motivated me to joining Ao3 as a member, rather than a guest, so I could participate more fully with commenting and Bookmarks. My original book mark said "Still thinking about this weeks later… so brutal but not without hope."

2) Rule of Three by DeiRyuu

Taking place during one of the Wright's visits with Edgeworth in Europe, this fic is a wholesome, well written, fambly one shot. ❤️💙💙 Part 1 of NaruMitsu Week 2020 series

One of those fics that are so well written and that you crave more at the end. Set in the early years of the 7 year gap, Phoenix and Trucy spend quality time with Miles in Europe (Miles POV).

Phoenix spontaneously flies to Europe to specifically not talk about his feelings with Miles. Kristophe is mentioned, read the tags. Recommending because it it is so good, but oh, my heart. This one kicked me.

Pess fic! A case fic! and yes, a Narumitsu fic set during the 7 year gap years. Super charming and a wonderful story to settle into over a weekend. This set me off on a Pess fic binge (hmmm, maybe a future fic rec list :) )

7) The Same Thing, Self Aware by cosmogyral

Rating: M Words: 15,921 Time to read: 60 min

So well written. Ow my heart, but hold on, cosmogyral has you baby, there is hope. I love the way that Miles is written and while it hurts to see Phoenix so…asshole-ish? Jaded. I love how his path to redemption is so beautifully crafted in this story. It leaves me wanting more.

Fucking GENIUS! All of it. This short fic has plot twists, emotional twists, delicious caginess, frustration, and the calm collected brilliant mind of Miles Edgeworth at work. There is a moment in this work that made me gasp and make a sound out loud, and one simply brilliant last line. What a rush. Just, yeah, Genius.

2) Make good what has been just so bad by SapphireWine

SapphireWine and knows how to build and release tension. This is a short one-shot set during one of Phoenix and Trudy's visits with Miles overseas that captures the moment Phoenix has one of his best 'bad ideas.' ; )

Gah!!! So. Damn. Good! One of those fics that I have come back to read it again and again for that rush of dopamine. This one takes place in Germany with Phoenix and Miles finishing off a bottle of wine together. Seriously this might be my all time favourite fic on Ao3 (yeah, yeah, I may have said that about 5 or 10 other fics, each for different reasons). Why the author orphaned their account I will never understand. I hope they some how still feel the fan love sent their way...

5) The Reasonable Man Test by realizationtime

Rating: T Words: 5,901 Time to read: 20 min

Trucy discovers Phoenix’s diary. I think that in the future, I might make a post about this fic all on its own. It is sensitively and compelling written, and deals with themes of mental health. This fic welcomed me in, then kind of slapped me in the face, but smooched me and hugged me and told me that things were going to be ok, or at least that loving souls will be ok despite the pain.

6) Like a house on fire by zombiekittiez

Rating: M Words: 19551 Time to read: 80 min

A beautifully crafted Miles and Trucy relationship-centric story. From the description:

"The phone rings and Miles answers, voice sharp and forbidding, jarred from a rare restful sleep.

“Do you have any idea what time it is, Wright?”

“No,” a soft, contrite, feminine voice says over the line. A young voice.

…and that is how Miles Edgeworth finds out about the disbarment."

7) talk me down by halfdemonvash

Rating: E Words: 69,063 Time to read: 5 hours

This fic just came out in October of last year and it is wonderful. I bookmarked it immediately after the first chapter because of the quality of the writing. It is easily one of the best 7 year gap fics I’ve read. Solid characterization and some nice schexy times. Chapter 2 could be a stand-alone story, it is so solid and beautifully crafted. And BONUS! It's a wonderful case fic too.

Seriously, the author’s brain is a gorgeous, many wrinkled thing.

Summary: There were certain things he knew to be true. (This was false. He was not quite so confident.) He knew this man was strong. (His arms were, at least, as they held him tightly.) He knew this man was kind. (He figured as much. The wrinkles around his eyes, the warm smile on his face.) He knew this man was his husband, and that he loved him very much. (He did not know this man.)
