Aang took a deep breath, willing his hands to stop shaking as he sprinkled lychee nuts and berries into the bowl. He kept his head down and tried to withhold the blush threatening to cover his cheeks. Right across from him sat the source of his discomfort: Toph Bei Fong. She looked as if she belonged in the Fire Nation, her clothes a vibrant mix of reds and golds. He shook some salt into the bowl, stretching to grab the spoon when she refused to budge from her spot.

Toph cleared her throat, her sightless eyes narrowing in annoyance. He pretended not to notice, hastily adding milk and sugar to the mixture. He knew that she felt the nervous pounding of his heart just as well as he knew that he could never out-silence her whenever she wanted to figure out whatever it was that was bothering him.

As much as he loved her way of showing concern, he really didn’t trust himself to speak at the moment. Not about the topic at hand.

He hoped that he wouldn’t have to do this; that he wouldn’t need to confess to her. Before the war had ended she had made herself a vital part of his life but now, as they traveled the world and tried to bring peace to damaged villages, her presence in his life had grown. She already was a constant while he was awake, but now she was everywhere: in his dreams, in his thoughts, in his fantasies. He gnawed at the inside of his cheek, frustrated at his own hesitation.
