Endlessly fascinated with the contrast between the (obviously) iconic Corruption Chuuya laugh and the fact that, for almost all of its use time, Chuuya remains neutral to focus/determined during Corruption:
there are actually only 2 panels where he's laughing, notably only after he's defeated his foe, before Dazai steps in:
If you watch the Dead Apple Corruption scene, Chuuya never laughs maniacally, remaining focused the entire time (as he was focused on finding Dazai instead of destroying everything around).
On other side, in Storm Bringer, we see Verlaine laugh while under Brutalization, in the middle of the action when he's already started decimating his enemies (with little resistance). His laugh is described as inhuman and compared to various powerful sounds of destruction.
Chuuya, for his part, smiles his wicked grins when the battle is at its peak with the sharing of blows, but otherwise is only described as howling and yelling (much like he was doing in Dead Apple).
I cannot argue how iconic the mad-with-power laughter of Corruption is, but I find it very interesting how we, the fandom as a whole, have fixated on such a small part of it to the point of assuming the laughter is a constant presence.
He has an ACME rewards punch card, and look at how nice that signature is!

Summary:Ā The minute he stepped into Mori's office Chuuya was already annoyed. While the Mafia dealt with foreign imports of all kinds, being told to investigate the strange influx of Stray Dogs across Yokohama wasnāt his ideal use of his skill set. Chuuya has always liked animals, animal's also liked Chuuya and he's always wanted a dog. He never expected to become a dog. The irony of Dazai calling him a dog all these years makes him want to scream. His ex partner has always been vocal about his disdain for two things. Now Chuuya is somehow both, and Dazai is the only one who can change him back.
Notes:Ā Happy Birthday Chuuya~ I wanted to post something for Chuuya's birthday & this has been sitting in my drafts. Eventually this will have more than one chapter because I see the vision I just haven't had the time to write for it. Gonna base all the dogs on WAN.
šĀ Word count:Ā 3,754 š Ā You Are Here | Next Chapter coming soon
The port mafia was practically "in charge" of every illegal trade in Yokohama so the sudden influx of stray dogs, breeds that were not known for being popular in Japan, tipped Mori off. He couldn't help but sigh rolling his eyes because he probably should have someone look into it. As silly as the situation may have seemed the Port Mafia has a reputation to uphold. Although the juxtaposition of sending an executive to investigate was also incredibly ridiculous but Mori has seen animals gravitate to the young man and knowing that a certain partner used to claim all the time that Chuuya was his dog, brought back a level of nostalgia that plastered a smile on his face. Chuuya on the other hand was less than pleased with this position. The mafiaās greatest combatant being used as a sheepdog to herd in a bunch of no names to the slaughter was a waste of time in his personal opinion. Don't get him wrong, he'll do it because Mori's command is law but he's still going to complain about it.Ā
The investigation didn't actually take him that long to trace it back to a series of missing people reports. One person went missing and suddenly there was a new dog on the streets. Although it seemed pretty cut and dry it was still concerning that the authorities haven't done anything about the disappearances. Most of the cases occurred near the edge of town where plenty of abandoned facilities were located. It was possible whoever was behind this was hiding there. Chuuya had only assumed what was happening, he had a hunch that it wasn't even animal's being imported. The power of science was a bizarre field to him, after all, he contained a power equal to that of a God.
What he didnāt expect was for it to actually be someone's ability. Why let the dogs out on the street if it was someoneās ability? He only had more questions but Chuuya didn't care one way or the other because what difference would it make to him. He was given the order to take them out regardless. Mori wanted the facility intact for further investigation after the group was swiftly dealt with but it was more of an afterthought. Chuuya didn't even bother taking reinforcements; he simply walked through the front door and watched as they realized nothing could touch him. He cleared out floors left and right until the only way down to the lower levels was an elevator. His ability should have been able to handle whatever trap had been set but then the room filled with gas, one of the very few things his ability had no effect on. Chuuya could only hold his breath for so long and despite manipulating the drop from the elevator to compensate for the impact of fall damage, he was already dizzy. By the time he forced the doors open, with a few steps out of the elevator he found himself collapsing to the floor.
His head had a dull ache that spread to the rest of his body. They didnāt kill or physically harm him yet which could only mean they want information but they must be more stupid than they look to not even bother trying to restrain him. All they did was put a cloth over him. His joints were sore as he tried to clutch his head. When he shifted the cloth fell off revealing not a hand but a paw. He wiggled out of what used to be his clothes to get a better look at himself. Observing the new changes to his body, he was a dog. A fluffy chihuahua if he had to guess by his reflection in the glass across from him. They seemed to have put him in some examination room. He turned around and shook his tail. The feeling of an extra limb was more apparent and weird but he didn't have time to dwell on it for too long. Someone was going to pay.
The familiar red glow covered his form as he continued what he came here to do. Being a dog wouldnāt matter in the end. He'd just change back after he killed the ability user, but even after clearing the building he didnāt. He ran up and down the empty halls struggling with the new sensation of walking. The panic was starting to set in. He still hadn't changed back and there was not a soul left in sight at the entire facility. That means they got away before Chuuya woke up. He grit his teeth. He didn't know how long he was out for and tracking them down would be a pain in the ass in the state he was in. The only thing that gave him some relief was that he came alone and that none of his comrades were in this predicament. He could only imagine the chaos an entire division of dogs would do.
Trying to sift through files with paws was a nightmare. It took all of his self control to not destroy everything in this godforsaken lab. Chuuya just hoped this weird organization didn't send back up his way otherwise he was screwed. He couldn't find anything important and his patience was running extremely low with how long it was taking to even grab a file from the desk. If he was human it would take him two minutes to settle this whole endeavor. Chuuya stopped dropping the papers from his mouth.
If he was human.
A wave of dread washed over him as he realized there was one person who could fix this.
Dazai.
He really didn't want to see the mackerel especially not like this but what else could he do. He couldnāt go back to headquarters like this. He couldnāt even phone for someone to help him, he tried. Even if someone picked up he could only bark and hoped they understood. All Dazai would need to do was touch him but there was one glaring problem with that. Dazai hates dogs. He wouldn't voluntarily approach them let alone pet one out in the wild. If Chuuya tackled him to the ground he would be forced to at least touch him right? He took off in the direction of the ADA without a second thought. Completely forgetting about his hat, his phone and the rest of his belongings. He sure had a lot of faith in Dazaiās ability.
Chuuya was exhausted halfway there. Walking on all fours was miserable considering the distance he had to cover and he was even using his ability to help travel which probably only made him more tired. Luckily it was so late in the night there weren't a lot of people or cars around. By the time he made it to the agency building he was ready to collapse. He sat by the door as the sun was already starting to rise. It would be hours before Dazai would show up. He let himself sleep in the meantime he was too tired to try and fight it.
āWhatās going on here?ā
A voice stirred Chuuya awake from his sleep but he didnāt want to wake up yet not after the night heās had. He could sleep in a little more right? He didn't have to make his report immediately. He contemplated just how long he would sleep in before another voice joined the conversation.
āHey Mr. Kunikida.ā
Chuuya swears heās heard the name before but it doesnāt fully click why. He was about to get up when he felt a hand smoothing out his hair. A warm feeling washed over him preventing him from wanting to move. He let the voices talk while he leaned into the unknown touch still keeping his eyes closed.Ā
āA lost dog, did you really think things through before bringing it here? Listen, it's a lot of responsibility taking care of a living creature.ā
Lost dog
That broke Chuuya out of his pleasant stupor. He opened his eyes and got up abruptly. He was sitting in the white haired kids lap while a bunch of agency members were surrounding him. None of them were the one he needed to see.
āDazai!ā he tried shouting as he scrambled out of the kidās grasp to find the waste of bandages. He briskly dodged the many hands that tried to grab for him. Finally being small came in handy for once. He cringed that he admitted that to himself. Chuuya sniffed the air and sure enough he could tell exactly where the brunette was sitting at his desk. As he bolted around the corner he jumped into Dazaiās lap almost knocking him out of his chair. He was pawing at Dazaiās chest trying to explain what happened to him but it only came out as incoherent barking.
Dazai frowned. All of his coworkers were fawning over an ugly mutt while he was making it a point to actually do some work. It was just a dog and a lost one no less. It already had an owner. What was so special about it? He had made his distaste for the animal apparent when Atsushi brought him up the stairs. Hadnāt he ever heard the phrase ālet sleeping dogs lieā before? A single bark rang out from the conference corner causing him to turn his head before everyoneās panicked cries could be heard. It must have woken up and the amount of people surrounding the dog scared it away. Dazai should be fine at his desk or so he thought. The small runt tackled him almost making him lose his balance yapping up a storm. He frowned, glaring at the dog but that only made it continue barking and pawing at him.Ā
āOkay thatās enough.ā Dazai snapped, holding the dog up with both hands. It was weird the dog stopped his infernal yelping, its eyes seemingly growing wide as both its tail and ears slumped downwards. Did the dog understand that it was being scolded?Ā
Atsushi stood in front of Dazai making sure the dog was okay āI thought you didnāt like dogs?ā
āI donāt. Here, you take him.āĀ
The statement was dismissive as he tried to hand Chuuya off to Atsushi but before he could get a proper hold on him Chuuya jumped on to Dazaiās desk and started growling at the tiger boy. Dazai perked up again at the sudden change in the dogās mood.Ā
āMaybe he can tell youāre a tiger.ā he stated playfully.
āOr maybe he likes you, Dazai.ā
Chuuya started barking again, taking an aggressive stance towards Dazaiās protege. Dazai stifled a laugh looking over the dog. It was a red long haired Chihuahua. The fur almost seemed unnaturally orange for a dog and paired with the black collar around its neck it almost reminded him of a certain slug. Maybe this dog was a Chuu-huahua with how little itās temper was.Ā
"We should call him Chibi because he's so small." Dazai wanted to take a picture, draw Chuuyaās tacky hat on the dog and then send the picture to him. Of course he wasnāt going to because that was effort he didn't want to waste on the small creature but he still had the thought cross his mind.
Before Chuuya could bark in protest the president stepped into the room to address the obscure racket. They filled him in on the situation as Dazai resumed working, nudging Chuuya to get off the paper he was writing on and then completely ignored the dog. Naturally Chuuya stepped aside at a loss of what to do. The president was pretty okay with the agency taking care of the runaway for now until they found his owner but they would never find his owner since Chuuya wasnāt actually a dog. He hadnāt even noticed he was still wearing his choker which is probably why they thought he was lost. It fit loosely around his neck but since his coat of fur was so fluffy it wasnāt that obvious it didnāt fit him properly.
Chuuya was gutted that he didnāt turn back immediately but if he could just get Dazaiās attention the brunette would put it together. They could communicate nonverbally in the past with just a look. All Chuuya had to do was to make the stupid mackerel realize itās him. He put his paw on one of the books discarded to the side. If he could make it float then his ex partner was sure to put it together right, but nothing happened. There was no red glow in fact Chuuya couldnāt even feel Arahabaki anymore not since the president said they would take him in. Was it possible that being a dog got rid of his ability? That canāt be right since he used it a few hours ago. He was more confused than worried. Dazai wasn't touching him; he should be able to use it. Chuuya grit his teeth but tried to appear calm. Chuuya glanced towards the president, was it possible it was his doing? He didn't actually know if the president had a special ability but it's also not like he doesnāt remember N explaining that animals are not capable of manifesting special abilities. It's just peculiar that he was able to use it when he first turned. Maybe it took him a while to fully transition to being a dog?
Ā He didnāt have much time to think about it as Kunikida tried to pick him up off the desk. He kicked his hand away and growled again. He refused to let anyone come near him. Chuuya might be a dog but he didnāt want to be touched again. Knowing how good it feels to be pet and pampered heās afraid heāll lose himself in the warmth, plus he needs to focus. His train of thought crashed when Dazai patted his head calmly saying āNo oneās going to hurt you here. You can stop your growling. Itās annoying.āĀ
He didnāt miss the glint of daggers in the otherās eyes, it was oddly comforting. If it was anyone else he would have bit them but right now Dazai was the only one he trusted. Chuuya nodded at Dazai causing him to pause. Chuuya would smirk if he could because he understood what that look meant. It was a subtle gesture but since heās known Dazai for years and in that split second he could tell the other was caught off guard.Ā
Dazai blinked, did the dog just nod at him? It was getting increasingly difficult to dislike this dog when it kept peaking his interest. Most animals have always hated him but cats usually were the only exception. They say that animals can judge a personās character and it seems like every small creature in Yokohama, including a certain slug, got the memo but this is twice now that this dog seemed to understand his words. Not even the cats that approached him displayed such obvious strange behavior. He could also be reading too much into this situation because he simply didnāt want to be working right now but that was more to spite everyone over the dumb dog.
Before anyone else could touch Chuuya, he jumped down and scampered underneath Dazaiās desk sitting by his feet. He had a lot to think about and he was still tired. He thought about going back to the facility to try again but it was too far for his small stature to traverse back and forth constantly and now he'd have to shake off these schmucks to do it. Honestly he could try dragging one of these losers with him, they are detectives after all. One of them could put it together but he doubts any of them would follow a dog around town for that long without thinking theyāve gone batshit crazy. The biggest problem is he didnāt know who the ability user was and there was no way for him to communicate effectively right now especially since his ability disappeared. Or was there? Heād have to think of something.
Atsushi and Kunikida watch in awe as the dog practically follows Dazaiās command. They both peer under the desk to see him curled up by Dazaiās feet. Atsushi raised an eyebrow.Ā
"I'm not the only one who thought that was weird right?" Laughing awkwardly as he looked around when everyone circled the desk.
Kunikida pushed up his glasses "I guess he's a lot smarter than he looks." Chuuya peeked out to bark again before glaring at the blonde. He could see this startled Kunikida slightly.Ā
Dazai sighed "I think you guys should leave Chibi alone for a bit. Let him get used to his surroundings."
"I'm impressed. Dazai, I didn't realize you were so good with animals."
His frown deepened "I'm not, I'm just saying that he's only gravitating towards me because I'm the only one who's left him alone."Ā
Dazai shifted to see the dog still at his feet lazily pawing at his shoe laces. He rolls his eyes. This dog was more of a cat than a dog but he supposed that with its small frame it wasnāt completely uncommon for a chihuahua to be fast and nimble but that does take the proper training to accomplish. Just whose dog was this, unless, was it possible this is Chuuyaās dog? Dazai remembered the hat rack always mentioning that he wanted a dog but for some reason he never got one. He smirked to himself. If that was the case Dazai would keep him for a while. Maybe he could train him to mess with his owner a little bit but first he had to find out if this was, in fact, Chuuyaās dog. Unfortunately finding that out would be too much effort even if it was to annoy Chuuya. He dropped the idea entirely. At the end of the day it was just a dog.
Everyone went back to their daily tasks giving Chuuya a much needed break from being the center of attention. He lazily played with the laces of Dazaiās shoes. He really had nothing else better to do. He heard the shuffling of paper and the scribbling of pens filling the room. Chuuya only assumed Dazaiās partner was furiously trying to blitz through paperwork. Glasses guy seemed like the workaholic type. Although that gave him an idea. If Chuuya could get his paws on a writing implement he could try spelling it out for Dazai. He slowly got up and walked around the corner to Kunikidaās desk. Everyone stopped what they were doing to watch the dog except for the blonde. Gracefully he jumped up and knocked a pen and small notepad off of the desk.Ā
āHey, what are you-ā Kunikida stopped when he saw the dog try to take the cap off the pen. Dazai raised an eyebrow but knelt down to take the cap off for him.
Chuuya tried his best to write āhelp meā but when he looked down it was intangible scribbling. Next he tried to draw a fish which he was much prouder of when he really shouldn't be. Dazai tilted his head as everyone crowded around to see what the dog was doing. When there was still no reaction Chuuya rolled his eyes and drew a hat. Well he tried to draw a hat. Putting the pen down it looked more like a food bowl but come to think of it he hadnāt eaten anything and it was nearing lunchtime already. Chuuya placed the pen down sitting upright, puffing out his chest. Surely this was enough for Dazai to understand what was going on.Ā
There was a moment of silence from everyone before Kenji clapped his hands together "Oh I get it! He's hungry."Ā
Chuuya deflated, nosing the paper of the notepad to start over as the ADA were trying to figure out the food situation. Chuuya took his time with the next drawing. He needed to get it right this time but holding the pen in his mouth wasn't the easiest thing in the world when he had to pick it up from the floor. Luckily this time it was a recognizable fish. When he was done he pushed it towards Dazai stamping his paw trying to mentally communicate.Ā
Dazai tilted his head to the side "A fish?" Chuuya barked trying to correct it to "mackerel" but it was no use.
Kenji crouched next to Dazai on the floor. "Could it be, he likes fish!"Ā
The brunette raised an eyebrow before trifling through his pockets to pull out a can of crab. "Maybe he could smell this on me? That would explain why he tackled me earlier." He flatly added opening the can without a second thought. Seriously, what was he doing? He should let the others handle the pest.Ā
Chuuya stared at the open can silently laughing to himself. Some things never change, huh? Back when they were partners Dazai always carried around the same disgusting cans of crab with him. He contemplated pushing it away but at this point it was better than being relegated to eating dog food. Taking a hesitant bite it wasnāt as bad as he remembered it being. He lapped up the crab ignoring the rest of the office marveling his odd taste in sustenance.
"A dog who likes crab and Dazai? Atsushi, where did you even find such a creature?." Kunikida put his pen down for the moment. This situation was weird even for what they normally deal with. "Well he was just sleeping outside the entrance. I thought he was another stray until I saw the collar." Atsushi scratched the back of his neck. He didn't really think anything of picking up the dog since Kyouka had brought a cat to the office not too long ago. Kunikida pushed up his glasses āI guess Dazai should be the one to take care of it then.ā Everyone in the
office nodded in agreement leaving Dazai in distress.
He scoffed āWhy me? Might I remind everyone that I detest dogs!ā
As Chuuya finished eating he casually walked back over to where Dazai was sitting and made himself comfortable in the brunette's lap. Kunikida laughed going back to his work. āCould have fooled me.ā
Dazai grumbled, staring at the small creature. It wasnāt everyday that anyone trusted him enough to fall asleep in his presence. This dog really was like Chuuya. The thought only made him roll his eyes. āYeah, as if.ā

Last year I wrote an analysis of the Warner siblings' relationship with their p-sychiatrist, Dr. Scratchansniff. I outlined how their relationship progressed episode-by-episode in the original series and how it all inexplicably went downhill by the end. That post was more of an overview than anything really in-depth, and in the time since I've done some more thinking on this topic, and I think there's more to explore here. (epic Outer Wilds reference)
So, welcome to part 4 of "overanalyzing the Warners". Well, welcome to part 1 of part 4. This writeup became so long that I decided to split it into two parts.
First, I want to really get in deep with the character and concept of Scratchansniff. The first surface-level thing you might notice about him is his really juvenile name. Everyone in the show treats it like a completely normal name, with the Warners nicknaming him "Scratchy", so if you watch the show it also starts to sound normal to you. This doesn't really have any deeper meaning. I just like to mention it because I find it funny reading and writing serious stories with a man named "scratch and sniff" in them.
Well, maybe it's not entirely meaningless. It does give some insight into what his character was initially supposed to be. He is a man who takes himself and his surroundings completely seriously, but he isn't a serious character. He's a normal, mundane person who finds himself trapped in a cartoon world with extremely absurd situations happening to him on a regular basis. I've seen him compared to Squidward in this way, and the comparison is extremely apt. They are both characters who take themselves seriously in a world that is completely non-serious, regularly interacting with other characters that have no regard for rationality or common sense. In doing so, they often find themselves actually acting more childish than the childlike characters around them, making a fool of themselves as they try to project some sense of normalcy on a world that rejects it out of hand. Their appearances are even quite similar, with their thin figures, big bald heads, and big noses. I wouldn't be surprised if Squidward was in some ways directly inspired by Scratchansniff.
Now, there's a question I've been throwing around in my head, and I can't come to a solid conclusion one way or the other. Is Scratchansniff meant to be incompetent? The answer that immediately comes to mind is, yes, obviously. He does a terrible job with the Warners, after all. We'll come back to that later.
But I was watching the first episode of the show for this post. Besides the intro, Scratchansniff is the first Animaniacs character ever introduced. The first segment of the first episode starts with him meeting with his own psychiatrist, telling his life story. He says he was "one of the most successful psychoanalysts in all of Hollywood." He tells the story of helping countless stars on the Warner Bros. lot, and he clearly says he loved his job. The question can still be asked, though, are we meant to take him at face value? He's shown talking to Ronald Reagan, in his actor days, who tells him about dreams he's having where he becomes president. Scratchansniff writes in his notes- "Delusions of Grandeur, incurable". It's clearly just a joke, I know. But taking it seriously for a second, it seems like he did a terrible job at helping his patient. To immediately write someone off as incurable at the slightest hint of a strange dream, a dream that isn't even all that strange? If that's all it takes to make him give up on a patient, how can he possibly deal with the more serious cases?
He continues, saying that the stars told him all their problems, their secrets, their pain. "It was so much fun!", he says. Ok, hold on. Is a psychiatrist supposed to take pleasure in knowing the secrets and pain of their patients? It seems like Scratchansniff may have been in the business for the wrong reasons. One might even start to think that he deliberately doesn't help his patients as much as he can so he can get more juicy secrets out of them.
Scratchansniff is next shown reacting to the moment the Warners escape the tower. I honestly haven't seen the first episode much, or at least not this part, so what I saw next surprised me. I was always under the impression that Scratchansniff first met the Warners in the 90's, when Plotz made him try to dezanitize them. But what is the first thing the Warners do when they escape the tower? Like, literally the very first thing? They race over to Scratchansniff's office and yell "Did you miss us?" Scratchansniff replies "I hardly even know you." He hardly even knows them. Which means he did know them, at least a little, before the 90's, before they escaped the tower for good. He goes on to ask if they know who he is, and Yakko immediately answers correctly with his full name and title.
Scratchansniff had been at Warner Brothers for 50 years according to him. Quick math says he started there around 1943. It's known that the Warners did escape briefly on a few occasions between the 1930's, when they were locked up, and the 1990's, when they escaped. So, at some point during one of those escapes, the Warners met Scratchansniff, and they seem to have immediately taken a liking to him, as he's the first one they visit when they escape again. Was it just a chance encounter? Was Scratchansniff their psychiatrist before the 90's? No way to know for sure, but what we do know is that their relationship extends farther back than is generally thought, possibly decades farther back.
Soon they start their first session, which goes disastrously. And this is where Scratchansniff's lack of real psychiatry skills comes into focus. He is vague with his wording, unclear in his demands, and very quick to anger, even when the Warners are only being mild annoyances at worst. At one point he says that he will say a word and he wants Yakko to say the first word that comes to mind in response. And Yakko does it, exactly how he was asked to, but the only problem is he starts a little early. Instead of simply adapting to the situation and starting the exercise while Yakko's being compliant, Scratchansniff becomes furious, calls Yakko a "stupid kid", and throws him out of his office. What a great way to start a healthy, trusting doctor-patient relationship.
He is at one point shown studying child psychology to help him treat the Warners. And I think this shows one of his major shortcomings- he's not a child psychiatrist. He treats the major stars of Hollywood. How many of those are children? He has no experience with children, especially toon children. He tries to approach things like he would with adults, expecting a calm and insightful conversation, when any child psychiatrist would know that doesn't always work with kids.
So, back to the big question. Is Scratchansniff bad at his job? Well, I'm going to hit you with a cop out answer. You can interpret the evidence however you want- take it at face value or dismiss them as the clear jokes they are- but the truth is it doesn't matter how good of a psychiatrist Scratchansniff is for most people. For the Warners, he's an awful fit. He has several shortcomings in this regard:
He's not a child psychiatrist.
He's out of touch. Scratchansniff had been a psychiatrist for 50 years. Do you know how much that field changed from 1943 to 1993? They were still doing lobotomies in 1943. Regardless of how well he's kept up with the times, some of his techniques are surely out of date. Not to mention the fact that, yes, he's still practicing in 2022.
He had become complacent with his work and was extremely overconfident in his own abilities. More on this in a second.
He had too short of a fuse and was too uber-serious to see the Warners' mild annoyances as what they really were: just playful mild annoyances.
Scratchansniff sees himself as a super successful psychiatrist, and so does most of the world. I don't think he ever was- I think those are delusions of grandeur. I think Scratchansniff had an "in" with Warner Bros.- maybe he knew someone high up in the company, or maybe his mentor was the previous psychiatrist there and recommended him for the job. Once he got that job, a job he truly enjoyed for seemingly the wrong reasons, he never looked back. He never dared to challenge himself with any truly difficult cases. He never left his comfort zone. When the Warners showed up, they turned his whole world upside down. Instead of the calm monotony he enjoyed, now he had to deal with constant zaniness and three children who were a bit of a harder nut to crack than all of his previous patients. He resented them for this, at least at the beginning.
The main counter argument to all of this is that the Warners are simply impossible cases. There is no curing them, so how could Scratchansniff be blamed for failing to? I don't see it this way. Yes, the Warners are deliberately annoying and difficult. But they're far from impossible patients.
The Warners are extremely intelligent. They are self-aware. Their only big problem is that they're poorly socially adjusted, as would be expected from three orphans who were mistreated from birth and never had a single trustworthy adult figure to guide them in their lives. Frankly, their problems seem to be fairly obvious and self-evident, even to an untrained layperson like me. Any psychiatrist worth their salt would pick up on this immediately and have a field day with patients like this. Scratchansniff doesn't.
The Warners aren't even that hard to make friends with. It's true that they closely guard their emotions with a thick shield of sarcasm and general mistrust toward human adults. On the other hand, it's been repeatedly shown throughout the series, original and reboot, that anyone who gives the Warners the tiniest bit of genuine affection will be instantly accepted by them. Frau Hassenfeffer, Flora Norita, Hello Nurse. They even form an attachment to Mr. Plotz, who never did anything but mistreat them. Scratchansniff has seen this happen right in front of him and he still doesn't realize it.
And it's not like the Warners don't have the motivation to improve. The Warners don't want to be outcasts. They want to be included, as I asserted in more detail in this post. So, if that's the case, why do they act the way they do? Why are they so difficult? I believe they act like outsiders because that's the only way they've ever been treated. It's similar to how I believe that Yakko plays off all affection as cheesy because it protects him from the letdown of genuinely hoping to receive affection and being denied it. The Warners play the part of annoying outsiders because that's the role they've been cast in. If they didn't play that part, they'd have to confront the reality that the reason they're disliked and shunned is simply because of who they are. It's far less painful to believe that people don't like them because they're deliberately annoying. Then it starts to feel like their choice, instead of something forced upon them unfairly (which is what it truly is).
Scratchansniff is completely oblivious to this. He takes their zany charade at face value. There are certain things you have to do as a psychiatrist if you want to solve anything more than the most surface level cases. You have to constantly be trying to dig deeper. You have to be extremely persistent, continuing to attack the problem at different angles even if the patient is being as difficult as they can be. You have to be willing to dispose of your preconceived notions, your natural emotional reactions to things, and try to truly see and understand the patient's real motives for their actions. Yes, the Warners know exactly how to push anyone's buttons to be the most annoying they can possibly be. A good psychiatrist has to rise above petty feelings like annoyance and frustration. Scratchansniff seems incapable of every single one of these things I just listed. It's like he expects every one of his patients to walk into his office as a completely healthy, mentally balanced person with only minor surface-level issues, which is the complete opposite of what he should expect in his position. So, no, the Warners are far from impossible patients. They aren't even really that difficult. There's far, far worse than them. (In terms of difficulty of treatment.)
It might seem like I'm taking this personally. That's true, I am. I care about these funky cartoon children and I do get a little angry thinking about how much they've been mistreated by everyone they've ever known.
Another problem with Scratchansniff's treatment of the Warners is the way he's been forced to approach it, and this is largely not his fault. He was asked by his boss, the CEO of the company, to get the Warners under control. To dezanitize them, make them quiet, "normal", polite, compliant children. In other words, he's asking Scratchansniff to destroy every part of the Warners' unique personality. What Plotz is asking could only be accomplished by a lobotomy.
I'm not saying the Warners don't need treatment. They do have problems and could benefit a lot from competent psychological treatment. That, though, would look a lot different from what Scratchansniff has been ordered to do. Effective treatment for the Warners would not seek to change who they fundamentally are. They would be allowed to remain zany, remain silly, keep the things that set them apart from everyone else. But they would be taught the things they were never told about the world and their role in it. Shown when it's appropriate to be all-out zany and when they might want to consider bringing it down a notch, and, most importantly, they would be told why these distinctions are important. Their self-esteem would be boosted, they would be shown that it's possible for them to exist in society and be accepted by others around them. They would realize that they can be comfortable simply being who they are, that they don't have to act out and amplify their zany traits to protect themselves from judgement and disappointment. All of this can be accomplished through just a few easy steps:
Make the therapy sessions feel like a learning environment. The Warners enjoy learning, they like the feeling of knowing stuff. If you make them feel like they're under a microscope, that there's something wrong with them you're trying to fix, of course they'll become defensive and uncooperative. You have to make it feel like a collaborative effort where you're simply showing them things about the world that they had missed before.
Make them feel accepted, both in the psychiatry office and outside of it. This step is the hardest because you have to get Plotz and WB leadership on board. Make sure the Warners know that you fully accept them, everything about them, and that they can talk about anything without judgement. They might make fun of you if you directly say this to them, but it's important that they know. Even if they don't seem like they're listening, they are. Then, make sure the rest of the studio lot is also an accepting place. Don't make certain areas off limits to them just because you think they'll annoy others. Let them out of the damn tower whenever they please. Teach them certain social norms that will allow them to more easily interact and feel accepted outside of the lot as well.
Gently make them aware of how their own behavior contributes to their marginalization from society. Be very careful not to point the finger at them, lest they become defensive again, and emphasize that none of the abuse they've suffered is in any way their fault. However, somehow they must become aware of how their actions can be off-putting to humans, why some people may find them annoying, and how it doesn't make their situation any easier. They probably already know on some level, but they have to become consciously aware. They also must be reassured that they are completely in control of their own actions. In the past, humans have given them the impression that they're nothing more than zany robots who have preprogrammed comedic reactions to things. Make sure they realize they're more than that, that they are intelligent, thinking people with complete agency over themselves. Allow them to detach their self-worth from their comedic skills, from their status as toons. This is a later-stage step that should only be undertaken once the Warners are comfortable with you and willing to be open and honest about themselves.
Never go back on your word or betray their trust in any way. This is one of Scratchansniff's major mistakes, possibly his biggest single mistake with the Warners. The Warners have simply been betrayed and misled too many times- they will turn their back on you and run away (metaphorically) the second they feel like you haven't been completely honest with them. They don't easily give others their trust. It has to be a slow process, building up trust over time, never taking a step backwards or giving them a reason to doubt that it's all worth it. It's like trying to build a relationship with a skittish wild animal. If you make any sudden movements, they will flee and your chances of befriending them take a major hit.
If everything goes well, the end result will not be three quiet, conformist children. They'll still be the Warners in all the ways that matter. But they'll be self-assured, confident that there is a place for them in society, willing to take social risks and open themselves up to people outside their little familial bubble. And all of this will have the side effect of ending most of their destructive, so-called annoying traits, because they'll simply have no need to do those things. People that feel connected to the world around them, that care about others and have others that care about them, will be much less likely to harm it.
To conclude this first part, I'll bring the focus back to Scratchansniff. If you still have any doubts that the Warners are not an impossible case, here's the strongest proof I have- even for all his many, many faults and missteps, Scratchansniff still managed to make progress with the Warners. He came close to earning their total trust and did form a close relationship with them, despite all the reasons they had to doubt him. But, in the end, Scratchansniff was simply unsuited to help the Warners in a way that would actually benefit them. He didn't have the tools. What Plotz should have done, if he truly cared at all about the Warners, is hire someone who had actual practical experience working with children, preferably even someone with experience working with toons (I assume such people exist in a world where toons live alongside humans in everyday life). The Warners could have been tamed. If you want do that, though, taming them cannot be your primary goal.
The next part will talk about the positive side of Scratchansniff's relationship with the Warners, and how it eventually all went wrong.
UPDATE: Here is a link to part 2.
OK SO CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE WHOLE EYES BEING IMPORTANT TO THE CHARACTERS THING. because this chapter had a whole lot of that. ohhh boy it had a lot!!!!! it did!!!!!
FIRSTLY. akutagawa. for a while, his eyes have been pitch-black. last chapter, they regained their light, as he remembered atsushi. and then they're pitch-black again in this chapter-- as the person who brought light to them, to akutagawa himself, is gone.
SECONDLY. dazai. as he tells akutagawa he can "certainly" give him a reason to live, at the same time, he himself looks like he has no reason to live, as if he's not living at all. his eyes are dark and dead. pitch-blacm just as akutagawa's were at the start of the manga, and this chapter, but with none of the determination or bite akutagawa has. just emptiness.
THIRDLY. (child) akutagawa. his eyes aren't empty, nor pitch-black at first. they're dark, with light within. he has not been shown light, nor has he been pushed into the shadows. they become purely fully of light when dazai claims he can give akutagawa a reason to live.
his eyes turn his signature pitch-black with his time in the mafia. he was not given a reason to live. he was given fear, pain, emptiness, and desensitivity to brutality. the chance of light and goodness in his eyes from when he was a child is erased by the port mafia-- by dazai.
his eyes become like dazai's dark, lifeless ones as dazai trains him. any chance at light, or goodness, or happiness, or true life is sapped from him and replaced with violence, abuse, the mafia, dazai, dazai, dazai!
atsushi is what brings akutagawa that light. and when atsushi is gone, the light is gone.
"the light in somebody's eyes" is a phrase meant to refer to someone's spark of life. their reason to live. akutagawa says that killing atsushi "became [his] sole motivation." but when atsushi dies, that takes the light out of his eyes. his reason to live vanishes along with atsushi.
atsushi is akutagawa's reason to live, isn't he?
