{Kansas City
June 25th, 20XX}
[Cardinal halted in front of the doorway, just out of sight.]
Cardinal: (This is it…)
[He grimaced and tensed, bracing himself.
He’d spent all of the previous afternoon and evening, and all day up to that point searching for this one, singular place. All of Kansas City, and he’d narrowed it down to this building.
It hadn’t been easy. He’d searched and followed lead after lead, sometimes forced into intimidation. It wasn’t until a very reluctant tip from an officer in-the-know that he’d been able to pin down a likely location.]
Cardinal: (Cursory scans by the Search Snakes didn’t show any signs of life in there, but I’m not holding my breath.)
Cardinal: (After all. I AM walking right into a den of assassins.)
Cardinal: …
Cardinal: (This had better work—)
<DLN-000 has entered Lethal Combat mode.>
[There was a priming noise as he prepared a charged shot in his blaster. He barreled through the doorway, weapon and shield at the ready.]
Cardinal: -Broadcasts his tune shrilly-
[The immediate entrance was empty, if trashed. There were some dried out piles of dead Xels on the floor, but no cores to be found. Furnishings had been ransacked, leaving a scene of utter chaos.]
Cardinal: -Aggressive data— -
[He didn’t bother hiding his presence. He was storming the place, not trying to infiltrate it.
He was almost tempted to blast away at the debris strewn across the floor, he was so high strung.]
Cardinal: (Where are you?!)
[Jazz snarled as they stomped their way through the confusing layout, exploring every location that betrayed an entrance, visible or hidden. His anxiety and anger built up into a frustrated frenzy. The glow of his eyes changed from a concerned bright green to a violent deep red.]
Cardinal: (WHERE IS EVERYBODY?!)
[Room after room, and there was nothing but destruction. Many rooms were scorched, covered in soot and ashes. It was as if someone had deigned to burn the place to the ground, and everything useful therein along with it.]
Cardinal: -Enraged, broadcasting a shrill scree of strained machinery- WHERE ARE THEY!?
[He couldn’t take it anymore. The stress of holding and maintaining a supercharged plasma blast was starting to wear on his body, not just his mind.]
[BLAM!]
[It wasn’t called a plasma BLASTER—or, in other terms, a plasma cannon— for no reason.]
Cardinal: -Angrily fires through the hole in the walls he’d just created-
[He lashed out at the edges of the openings as he walked through them to take a shortcut back to the main room. If there was any hope to be had of salvaging the situation, it would have to be here, where the assassins filed their paperwork and received their orders.]
Cardinal: (A file, a note, a single scrap of [glitchfraggin’] PAPER! I’LL TAKE ANYTHING RIGHT NOW!!)
[He was so blinded by the pent up rage and frustration that he could barely focus as he thoroughly tossed the room. He rustled through the ashes, ripped open cabinets, cracked open safes.
But he found absolutely nothing of value to him. Nothing to tell him where Shade had gone… nothing to tell him what Shade might be up to.]
Cardinal: (Dammit…)
[He stood in the middle of the room, shaking with emotion.]
Cardinal: (Damn it all…)
Cardinal: (DAMN IT ALL TO HELL—!)
[He seethed as he dropped to his knees, putting his hands to his face.]
Cardinal: I’m such a useless rager…
Cardinal: I let something inevitable for the amount of DAYS that have passed get to me so easily…
Cardinal: Cardinal, you selfish fool…
[He had to get up.
He knew he had to get up. He had to keep going.]
Cardinal: (Shade needs me. I can’t allow myself to give in to DESPAIR.)
[He had to move. He had to keep going.]
Jazz: -Headbutts Cardinal- Rrrrrooooooowwrrr…
[He had to…]
Jazz: -Purrs heavily, placing her head right up next to the side of his neck- Prrrrrr… hrrrrrrr… hrrrrrr…
[He was slowly coming out of it.]
<DLN-000 has entered Non-Lethal Combat mode.>
Jazz: Prrrr… rrrrrrr… hrrRRrrrr…
[Rage was slowly giving way to sorrow. It was a deep sorrow that put a strain on his heart, creating pain by locking up his mobility rig and slowing down the processes right around his core.]
Cardinal: (Why…)
Jazz: -Nuzzles him- Rrrrr… hrrrrrr…
Cardinal: -Forces himself to get to his feet out of sheer need, despite lacking the willpower- (Why…)
[He slowly dragged his feet and shuffled along right to the door, Jazz at his side. He was obliged to take his hands away from his face, taking hold of his shield in resignation.]
Cardinal: (Why did it have to be this way?)
[He slowly traveled along, winding back through the alleys without purpose. He had nowhere to go: he just needed to think.]
Cardinal: (It wasn’t supposed to be like this…)
[He walked through the empty streets, barely even paying attention. Jazz was serving her true extent of a support unit by picking up the slack in processing incoming sensory information, allowing him to remain lost in thought, lost in the past.]
Cardinal: (Never like this…)
[A flicker of a bit of data caused him to pause, stopping in his tracks. Something he had seen was tugging at a memory. Something relevant.]
Cardinal: …
[He gradually came to process that he was standing in front of a graffiti wall. It was covered in symbols that he could identify as code, as well as territorial claim.]
Cardinal: (Shade…)
[He pressed his hand up against the wall, thinking back on that day.]
Cardinal: (Shade…. It’d been so long since that night….)
[Echoes of memory begged to be remembered, but the cross-reference was hollow from the inability to process it’s happy enjoyment.]
Cardinal: (We were all finally together again…)
Cardinal: (And then this had to happen…)
[He slumped against the wall, feeling exhausted.]
Cardinal: (It was never supposed to be like this, Shade…)
Cardinal: (I was the one with the dangerous world, where every twist and turn was a threat to me…)
Cardinal: (I was the one with such accessible coding, so easily reprogrammed…)
Cardinal: (This should have been me…)
Cardinal: (It should have been ME…)
Cardinal: (…not you…)
[He was shaking again, beginning to feel dizzy from building up heat. Without being built to cry, he simply had no physical procedure designed to relieve emotional intensity.]
Cardinal: (I… I should have tried…)
Cardinal: (I should have tried to plan something, prepare a contingency… truly prepare [for] it coming after you…)
[He ached in every extent possible, with every fiber of his being.]
Cardinal: (I’m supposed to know these things, to make these plans and contingencies for any possible slew…)
Cardinal: (Failed…)
[The heat was getting to be too much. He sat down to allow his secondary fans a bit of a break, generating less heat and allowing him to cool.]
Cardinal: (That was my responsibility, the single responsibility I still owed to the family, and I didn’t follow through….)
[He vented a long and heavy sigh, the tension and heat draining from him into the humid air.]
Cardinal: …
Cardinal: (I made a plan for if something happened to me. And I know we talked it over, but…)
Cardinal: (We never made specifics for if something happened to you, let alone the entire country…)
Cardinal: (Where are you, Shade?)
Cardinal: (Where are you?)
[He was tired. Very tired.]
Cardinal: (Your family keeps causing major damage nationwide…) -Puts a hand to his head, weary- (Your sister disrupted energy at a critical power plant, your brother hijacked a la Toby’s reign of Monstropolis…)
Cardinal: (What are you and Bat even up to? What madness and decimation are you two causing right now?)
Cardinal: (We have to find you…)
Cardinal: (We have to find you both BEFORE the feds do…)
[His vision was starting to clear up, and he found himself stuck in the long shadows of fading sunlight. Clouds were moving in.]
Cardinal: …
[He sat in silence for a good, long while.
His plan had failed. He should have known it wouldn’t be so easy, but he only had that one chance to go off of. He had hoped to get a solid lead on Shade, so that he could continue.]
Cardinal: (Battalion is a major threat, but he’s also a walking tank. With the amount of destruction he’d leave in his wake, it shouldn’t be that hard to find him. He’s so distinctive and massive… you could hardly miss him.)
Cardinal: (…But you…)
Cardinal: (You could be ANYWHERE…)
[He shook his head, feeling defeated.]
Cardinal: (And I don’t have even the faintest idea of what you’re capable of…. I had kept out of that part of your life that was sworn to secrecy…)
Cardinal: (What sort of secrets do you know, Shade?)
[He gave a small whine of displeasure before pushing himself back to his feet. He stared at the wall of graffiti sullenly.]
Cardinal: (Where are you hiding?)
Cardinal: Nnnnn…
[He rummaged through his supplies, taking out some paint cans. He’d brought them along to double as weapons—to blind opponents’ eyes—but he had a feeling that that strategy just wasn’t going to be fit for the situation.]
Cardinal: …
[Psssssht. Psssshhhhht.]
Cardinal: (Wherever you are…)
[Pssshhhhht… pssshhhhhht…]
Cardinal: (Whatever you’ve begun…)
[Psshhhhhhhhhhhhhht…]
Cardinal: (I’m GOING to find you.)
[He stepped back to look at his artwork, tossing the half-empty cans on the ground.
There, amidst the chaos, he’d painted the family symbol for the Rebel Angels.]
Cardinal: …
[He turned sharply on his heels, shifting to his Civilian form.]
Cardinal: Come on, Jazz.
[His cat trotted along, following suit.]
Cardinal: We need to start over. Get new leads.
Cardinal: I have an idea…

Goose: dON’T TALK TOO LOUD OR THEY’LL HEAR YOU—
AVAIL— Don’t you think your actions are reckless?
[ KING ] - “Hmm…”If Avail was REALLY honest with himself…Well, yes. He COULD be reckless at times, and..Sometimes his sister Hense didn’t like that. At all. But, in a way, he couldn’t help it–There was just so much to see and do, and it was literally in his programming to adventure for the sake of Firixia–the game, that is.Hense had that too, just…not to the very same degree–more sensible about it.“I guess. But, hey, I’m no pushover! I can always find myself out of a jam if I have to, heh.” …Still, Hense had a point–He should be more careful–If not for his own kingdom, then for her.“I’ll just have to practice being more, uh…aware of what I’m doing, if anything!”

{July 1st, TUMBLR 2016}
{Sanda Enterprises}
[Back at Sanda Enterprises, under the florescent lights of the lab below, William White's work on repairs for his children was moving along in a steady pace—the man was starting to feel the toll of the week that had just transpired for them all, but he was trying to push through his fatigue for the moment.]
...He could rest easier after he finished.]
Will: …
[…It was clear he had a lot on his mind…]
Will: -Moves his gaze away for a moment-
[...and it was easy to see, as he glanced upward to look at his sleeping friend.
Mikhail had finally been granted a bit of rest. True, it had taken a Psynergy cast from Felix, but still. He needed it.
He was clearly rather exhausted, body and soul—and still in cuffs, unfortunately.
At least Felix was watching over the technological isolation cell; and he had seemed pretty confident that things would work out well, once he had returned from tending to the matter personally.
It was more than could be said for Cardinal, who still was shielded by the curtain. Although he was in slightly better shape, he wouldn’t be coming Online any time soon.]
Will: (…what a mess…)
Will: -Sighs tiredly, going back to his work-
Will: (And I made some of that worse. Some friend I am…)
Will: (…I just want things to go back to normal…)
Will: …
Will: (…but at least…at least, maybe, the worst is over…)
Will: (Everyone is home, nothing is an IMMEDIATE danger at the moment, the DCNs included…)
Will: (Soi should be reporting back soon, and then we'll finally be able to make some progress to fixing this…)
Will: (Hopefully they got Father to talk, somehow…)
Will: -Furrows brow-
Will: (...It's been several hours, actually…)
[Fsh.
The automatic door to the lab opened, as if in response to his thoughts.]
Will: -Blinks—-
Will: (Soi? No…)
[Hardly. There was the relatively quiet sound of boots as someone walked in.
Someone who looked very forlorn and very nervous.]
Will: [!] Tobias?
Felix: -Looks up- ?
Tobias: -Sparks weakly, broadcasting- Is this a bad time?
Will: -Immediately putting down his tools- I… I was in the middle of repairs, but…
Will: (What in the world is he DOING here—)
Will: (Thank goodness Mikhail is asleep—!)
Will: -Pulling up a chair- I can spare a moment or two.
[Tobias didn’t move. He wrapped his arms around himself as if he wanted to curl into a ball, and he avoided eye contact.]
Tobias: -Audio glitches- O-Oh. I… This system does not want to hinder your progress, Doctor…
Felix: …
[The unlucky Adept knew enough about the Robot Masters and Tobias in particular to recognize when one was near their breaking point.
Combined with the situation, this could not go anywhere good.]
Felix: Tobias…
Felix: What are you doing here?
[The Robot Master flinched at this, recoiling with fuzzy data of guilt. He began shaking a bit, as if under extreme duress.]
Tobias: F-fault…
Will: (…Oh no…)
Tobias: Everyone… almost everyone is Offline or injured. The database is down, and the equipment is broken…
Tobias: E-everyone is so stressed a-and Carlos said Doctor Cossack was in trouble—
Tobias: Wh…what’s going on, Doctor? We… I made things worse, didn’t we?
[He sparked up more.]
Tobias: We always… always make things worse…
Will: …
Will: -Very, VERY gently- Tobias…
Will: Please believe me when I say that you did nothing of the sort.
Will: Mikhail is… tired, and needs his rest. Right now that is what we all need. This hasn't… been the best of times for us.
Will: But we are working on getting things back on track.
Will: Soi and the others will be back at any moment, and once they are, we're going to get right to work on fixing this.
Tobias: -Soft whine-
Felix: …
Felix: Tobias, when you woke up...
Felix: Was Nico with the rest of you?
Tobias: N-no…. Tried… tried pinging him, but got the error message that his transceiver isn’t on…
Will: ... (That's...not a good sign, but it IS a maximum security prison...)
Will: ...I could try and ping Call to get an update. It's been a while already. (And I'm starting to get worried...)
Will: -Grabs his phone- It could just be the security measures in the prison blocking the—
[Rumble...]
Will: —? (...That's...odd, did my phone just vibrate now, or—)
[RUMBLE....]
Will: —!!?!
[The whole lab and it's contents suddenly started to SHAKE violently. Will grabs the table near him as the lights flicker overhead, knees giving out as they could not support themselves under the sudden seismic activity—]
Tobias: -Scree!-
Will: (What in the WORLD?! An earthquake, now?!)
[RUMBLE...]
Will: -Gnn—!-
[The shaking lasts for quite a few minutes, until they finally started to die down in waves. By the time all was still, things were strewn about and knocked out of place...]
Tobias: Hnnn…!
[Tobias ended up curled up in a ball on the floor, taking cover and giving off errors in his profuse apologies. But he needn’t have done so—]
Felix: Are you two alright??
[—because it was NOT the Adept’s doing.]
Will: @~@! I...oh goodness...
Will: I...believe so...
Tobias: -Hnnnn we're sorry we're sORRY WE'RE SORRY—-
Felix: -Holds his hands out in a peaceful "stop" gesture- Easy, Mr. Wily! That was not my doing, I assure you.
[This didn't exactly help very much.]
Tobias: -weeeeeEEEEEHH, MIC MUST BE ANGRY—-
<DLN-008>: > -WE'RE SORRYYYYYY-
[PING!]
[MN.4] //: -???- -What was that-
[MN.6] //: -Pinging worry data, Toby?? What's going on--
[MN.1] //: Nn...Mic? Are you okay?
[MN.4] //: -Ping, yes-
[MN.4] //: -That...wasn't us...-
Will: Then...the plates shifting natrually? (Just our luck...)
[MN.4] //: -Quiet rumbling- No...not earthquake...
Felix: No, William—this wasn't natural. -Seems a bit confused- It was underground, to be sure, but…
Felix: >> Trust me. I know what it feels like when the earth is shifting plates. Venus Lighthouse was a very memorable teaching experience.
Felix: -Murmurs, getting up and leaving- I'm going outside.
[He didn't bother taking the door, instead opting to use Retreat and vanish in a swirl of multicolored spheres.]
Will: -Reaching for his phone again- I'm calling Soi right this moment.
[...Except after about several tries, he couldn't even get so much as a ring in without it automatically going to voicemail, which was VERY worrying, because Soi was ALWAYS punctual with phone calls...]
Will: (Gah, why aren't you ANSWERING? Are you STILL at the Prison, Soi?)
Tobias: Not… not going to work, everything is broken over there.
Will: :gs_drop~1: (...He has a point. I need to either send someone out there or go myself, but...)
Will: ... -Runs a hand through his hair- Tobias, you stay here in the lab and wait for Felix to come back.
Will: -Pulling his coat around him- I'll be right back, I'm going to see if I can't find some other way to contact Soichiro and find out what exactly happened...
Will: Avi--can you bring up the security camera feeds for me?
[MN.6] //: Yuppers, I'm on it--
[It doesn't take very long for Avi to do so, and Will finds himself flipping through various feeds on his phone.]
Will: Anything unusual in the building?
[MN.6] //: Negative, Daddo--all clear, lemmie swich over to--
[MN.6] //: --!
[MN.6] //: Hey--hey guys--
[MN.6] //: Uncle Soi Sauce is back--
Will: :gs_shock~1: -Turns on his heel-
Tobias: ? (But… I don't sense any other signals?)
Will: Where? (He...didn't come through the front door?)
[MN.6] //: ...Uh.
[MN.6] //: oh no
[MN.6] //: ...Daaaaad, we might have a problem--!
[MN.6] //: -I--It's Callgirl--
Will: Where are they, Avi?!
[MN.6] //: They're coming down the stairs to the roof--
Will: ??? (How in the world did they--?)
Tobias: ???
Tobias: Did you airlift them there?
Tobias: :gs_idea~1:
Tobias: Did Nico take them there? The roof is where Cardinal goes, so it's one of the default data points…
[MN.6] //: ...I...
[MN.6] //: I don't see Nico...
Tobias: :gs_silence~1:
>PROCESSING…
>ANALYSIS COMPLETE.
<DLN-008 has entered Defensive Combat mode.>
<DLN-008>: > -DISTRESS, last time Nico was separated from her he was DEAD—-
Will: (Oh no oh no--)
Will: Stay here--!
[Will BOLTS out the lab door and starts booking it towards the stairs. Meanwhile, the feeds on the Mighties' side of things started to buzz to life in confusion, mostly awakened by the previous quake.
Once Will gets to the stairs in question, however, the door to them suddenly FLINGS open, nearly hitting him in the face.]
Will: :gs_shock~1:
Will: Soichiro--!
Soi: WILL-- ;n;!!!
Soi: Will--we--we need to go, right now, PLEASE--
Will: Soi--Soichiro, please, you're not making sense--
Soi: -PANIC- No! We need to go RIGHT NOW, we need--need to fix her and then LEAVE, PLEASE--!
Will: Fix--? -Looks down-
Will: :gs_shock~1:
[The Doctor stares in wide-eyed SHOCK as his hues fall on Sanda's own daughter, utterly BROKEN and seemingly lifeless in his arms.]
Will: Call--?!
[PING!]
[MN.9] //: Call? What--what's wrong? Call?
[MN.9] //: Dad....Call isn't picking up, what's going on--
Will: Oh my word...
Will: Soi--what HAPPENED out there, what happened to her?! And--where is Nico, wasn't he with you??
[Soi WINCES in clear pain when Nico is brought up, but then pushes past his friend towards the direction of the labs.]
Soi: Not now--need to get her on a Xel Transfusion, and then we're ALL leaving for Tokyo--!
Will: What??
Will: But the airlines are SHUT DOWN, Soi, there's no way to leave the country, and we can't just leave Mikhail--!
Soi: Then we take a Wilderness shortcut, I don't CARE!
Will: :gs_drop~1: :gs_drop~1: :gs_drop~1: Soi! Soi, just WAIT--
[Soi opens the doors to the lab and steps through with purpose, but--then he stops short when he finds this is the same old Sanda Labs on the other side, not the Meadow's.]
Soi: Wha...?
Soi: (I don't understand, it's not working--?!)
[Open. Shut. Open. Shut. Open—]
[WOW, that is a BLINDING distortion—]
Soi: -GAH--
[The door slams shut on its own, as if blown back by a shockwave.]
Will: ???? What the...?
[When opened again… just the rest of the building. And nothing else.]
Soi: -Just absolutely defeated- It...it's not working...!
Soi: (How am I going to get everyone AWAY now?)
Will: ...
Will: -...Gently grabs Soi's shoulder- Soi... please...
Will: Slow down, whatever it is that's getting you like this...we need to help Call first...
Soi: ...I...
Soi: :gs_frown~1:
Soi: ...
Soi: ...Yes...
Soi: Yes, of course...
Will: Good man.
Will: Come on, just get her on the table, take a seat. Start from the beginning...
Soi: :gs_frown~1:
[The Japanese Doctor does so, and once Call was properly hooked in, repairs and diagnostics began almost immediately. There was the distance shuffling of feet down the hall.]
Will: (...The Mighties, no doubt...)
Soi: It... it happened so fast...
[RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS...]
[STATUS UPDATE, RE: CALL. XEL COUNT CRITICAL, SYSTEMS UNRESPONSIVE. IMMEDIATE XEL TRANSFUSION REQUIRED]
Soi: I couldn't...I couldn't stop them...
Will: Stop...wait, don't...don't tell me... (Did...Did Father...?!)
Soi: We--We got to the Prison, and everything was going...okay, for the most part, Avi even showed up to help us for a moment--
[Soi was speaking as fast as he could while tending to his daughter, as if he was in a VERY big hurry.]
Soi: We got there, and there was this...this huge canine bot, but Call handled it...
Soi: Then Nico showed up...
[PING! PING!]
[The system update regarding Call sent a WAVE of worry and cascading emotion across the Mighty's feeds.]
[MN.9] //: Call--!!
[MN.6] //: Shhhshh, it's okay, Beckers, the Docs got her--
[MN.3] //: -Buzzing worry data--
[MN.7] //: -Very DEEPLY distressed data-

Soi: He told me--about CherryDynamics and Trinity, how she's going to just grow and grow and--and--!
Will: :gs_shock: He--?
Soi: He said the only thing we could do is run and then--! Something...something showed up, something just TORE down his cell door, SCREAMING!
Soi: -Panic and upset-- I couldn't stop her, she was just too fast, too strong and too ANGRY, and then she just took him in a ball of FIRE--!
Will: --Someone--someone TOOK Dr. Blackwell?!

[Will is floored. He starts to pace around the room, frantically looking this way and that.]
Will: I don't understand--
Will: I thought...I thought he...
Will: (I thought he would have answers, SOMETHING, but now someone else took him? Why?!)
Will: (Graham? The government? Who?)
Soi: Will...If...if what he said was true, then we REALLY, really need to go--
>LOADING…
Will: But we can't just leave, Soi, this IS our home and Mikhail--we don't even have the option of taking him with us, not with the PRESIDENT still in the building!
Soi: Then we tell her too! Lives are in DANGER, she'll--
Will: Are you MAD? If you tell them that--! (Then Trinity--!)
Soi: Will, there's no other way around it! We need to LEAVE before it's too late!
Will: I am NOT LEAVING!

"Do you feel that?"
[The voice was... unmistakably female.]

Will: --?!
"And there is NO force that can stop it now. You had this COMING. YOU A L L had this coming!"
"You--hnk--!"
[For a moment, the female voice wheezed again, and coughed VIOLENTLY for several minutes. When she calmed down again, her voice was a bit weaker, but still just as angry.]
"You... arrogant, sinful h u m a n s..."
[MN.9] //: -No, nonononoNO--
"Did you really think you could get away with all that you've DONE?"
"After what you did to ME? After destroying everything I held dear and leaving me to DIE alone, with no one to so much as say goodbye to?"
"So QUICK to change your opinions, to cheer on your TOYS in that sandbox you call a Colosseum! And now that they have been STRIPPED from you, what do you have left? That's right. FEAR."
"In the end, that's all you are ruled by..."
"And it's going to be your UNDOING. You will all BURN in the fires of the VERMILLION DESTROYER, the one you CURSED into the darkness nearly HALF a century ago!"
"And of course, we're going to start with the one thing you all LOVE to flaunt above all else..."

Unfortunately, the door to the lab didn't open QUITE fast enough—]
CRASH!
Shadow: :gs_shock~1:
Felix: -OW, why this—-
Will: Felix--!
Felix: William—!
Felix: William, the sky is becoming swarmed!
Felix: I SAW THIS IN THE BEGINNING, WILL! The wave of darkness that sent DEATH in its shadow!
Will: Wha--?!
Soi: I KNEW IT, I TOLD YOU, WE NEED TO GO NOW--
[Will throws himself at the nearest terminal, fingers flying over the keys as fast as he could make them.]
Will: Avi! I need the outside feeds, and tell your brothers to get yourselves IN THE LAB, now--
[ERROR: COMM FAIL]
Will: Bah--!
<DLN-008 is now Online.>
Tobias: Uuugh…
Tobias: Avi, my head hurts…
Tobias: I think I didn't recover from the White House, I'm getting like a billion hails from foreign countries asking for the President…
[PING!]
[MN.6] //: ...Toby?
<DLN-008>: >Mmmng. Yeah?
[MN.6] //: ...uh?
[MN.6] //: Aren't... aren't the comms off?
Tobias: …
Tobias: Avi, I'm getting satellite feeds from WEST VIRGINIA and wireless calls from Japan and Britain, so SOMETHING is working—
[MN.6] //: -ABSOLUTELY confuzzled beyond confused-
[MN.6] //: ...Okay, well! Not gonna question it! Seriously, what the HECK is happening, did you hear that spooky voice, how's Dad--
Will: ...Tobias--?
Tobias: Mmmn… -Gets to his feet- I'm… I'm mostly okay, sorry…
Shadow: -Attempts to ping Brandish over the SEDW feeds-
>ERROR X05: UNRESPONSIVE/DAMAGED SOFTWARE DETECTED
Shadow: -Grumbles- {Bah, jamming signal…}
Tobias: Bluh. Just reboot, you'll be fine. You're a space ninja, this surely can't be as bad as solar flares.
Shadow: :gs_drop~1:
Felix: Tobias, can YOU contact the others?
Tobias: Hmmng?
<DLN-008 to MNN-ALL>: > -Ping!-
[A unanimous response--]
[MN.3] //: -Oh my God TOBYYY--
[MN.1] //: -Gnnh, that scream...-
[MN.9] //: --! Toby--!
[MN.3] //: <'3 Hey, you okay, zzsparkbro? What'szz going on, doeszz Daddy need help?
[MN.2] //: YEAH AND WHY AREN'T THE OTHER COMMS WORKING--
<DLN-008 to MNN-ALL>: >Y…yeah, I think he said something about that.
<DLN-008>: > -I'm starting to get a lot of calls from the Pentagon and Tokyo, though…- -Headache…-
<DLN-008>: >Can you guys come down to the lab?
<DLN-008>: > …
<DLN-008>: > -'Cause Felix broke the door, I think-
<DLN-008>: > -What is going onnnn…-
[In a matter of moments, the rest of the Mighties file in. Soi was already heavily into Call's own repairs, while Will was trying to access the outside camrea feeds himself from his terminal.]
Beck: :gs_frown~1: !
Beck: Call...?
Will: -Frowns- ...She'll be alright, Nine.
Shadow: -Only just now notices something- …
Shadow: {Doctor Sanda, where is my older brother?}
Soi: .... :gs_frown~1:
Soi: I...He's...still at the Prison...
Shadow: :gs_conf~1:
Shadow: -Spots a telltale bit of lime green- ?!?!?!! ({That ribbon—!})
Shadow: ({Oh no…})
Shadow: {…God rest his soul; he is beyond all hope, I take it…}
Soi: I... I don't...
Soi: I don't know... He...told us to just leave him behind...
Shadow: {Leave him behind on FEDERAL PROPERTY?? Only if he were at death's door!}
Felix: -Puts a hand on Shadow's shoulder- We have other problems, Shadow.
Felix: It's getting dangerous outside, and we can't get to the Meadow or anywhere else that is bordered by the Wilderness only.
Will: I am--TRYING to get a clear view of outside as we speak--Avi, please tell me you can get a camrea out there--
Avi: I can try...
Tobias: …
Tobias: Uh…
Tobias: Don't… don't hurricanes normally form on the ocean?
Shadow: …???
Shadow: -This is not the time to indulge your fascination in meteorology, brother—-
Tobias: -Annoyed expression-
[He goes over to a free console and starts hooking himself in while working away at the computer.
Within a few moments, it was displaying a military-grade satellite feed of Titus.
…At least, that's what the coordinates would indicate. Much of the city itself was quickly becoming obscured.]
Avi: ....Uuuuuuuuuh, that...doesn't look like a cloud...
Will: :gs_shock~1: :gs_shock~1: :gs_shock~1:
Will: I...It's growing--
Felix: :gs_silence~1:
[He's studying it with careful consideration.]
Felix: …I would be able to destroy that, but unless the source is stopped and resources cut off… that will only help for a few minutes at most.
Shadow: …
Shadow: Sorry, "destroy"? Destroy all THAT? It is covering the entire city.
Felix: You heard me.
Felix: …Unfortunately, that would not do much. :gs_frown~1:
Avi: -Is preoccupied with getting his cam in the air-
Cyro: This ought to be good--
Pyro: What I want to know is WHY that large "cloud" is forming, what exactly IS it?
Avi: We're gonna find out--
Avi: I got eyes on the sky--Toby, do me a favor and redirect this feed to the big screen for me?
Tobias: Sure.
[After a moment, the feeds switched over to Avi's skycam.]
[KSST...]
[Static. Or so it seemed, before it suddenly cleared up.]
Avi: Holy--!
Will: :gs_shock~1: :gs_shock~1:
[The sight was almost surreal...]
[But there was no mistaking it--the clouds that covered the sky and the sick blocky goop that seemed to be EATING it's way through the Battle Colosseum...]
Beck: That...
Beck: That's all XEL!
Tobias: …
Tobias: Are you sure? I thought Xel was rainbow.
Beck: It is, I'm not wrong--
Beck: But I've never seen anything like it, and so much--at once--
Beck: Where--where is it all coming from??
Soi: It...it's like the Colosseum is being eaten and subsumed...
Tobias: Um… I'm not sure where, it just seems to be gathering…
Felix: …
Felix: …Wait…
Felix: …
Felix: {No, surely… surely not…?}
Will: Avi, what are the conditions surrounding the Colosseum?
Avi: I...I gotta be honest with you, Dad...
Avi: It's one crazy mess out there--
[The camera feed shifts down towards the streets...
Filled to the BRIM with infected Xel and robots.]
Avi: The streets are packed SOLID with haywire bots--
Felix: -Dread-
Felix: All of them… all of them infected?
Avi: I...I think ALL of it is--
Avi: Oh no...
[There was a distinct dark Venus aura coming off of Felix. A very, VERY unpleasant one.]
Felix: {For the love of Life. All… everything infected is being drawn there to be torn apart! That could have been all of you!}
Beck: -Choked gasp--
Soi: -DISTRESS- WILL--
Soi: If all of that is infected Xel, and it's GROWING, then--then how long before it reaches HERE?!
Pyro: :gs_shock~1: :gs_shock~1: :gs_shock~1:
Felix: You would put a spoken limit on your hours? That is an unwise burden to place upon children, Doctor.
Felix: Ask yourself this instead; can the erosion be prevented? In any way?
Felix: There will undoubtedly be a price. There always is. But even the most remote, under the most brutal of force—we found a way, though it took us to the ends of the earth and the brink of despair.
Felix: Do you have a way?
Will: ...
Will: (Think, think, he's right, there is no turning back now--)
Will: (How can we buy ourselves more time to plan?)
Will: (We can't leave, but we can't do NOTHING either, we need to stall, or freeze the Xel in it's tracks--)
Will: ! -Slams his hand on the table- I got it--
Will: We just need to stop it from getting in, right?
Will: I need time to come up with a plan, so we need to stall. It's a tall order, but--
Will: Cryosphere?
Cryo: ?
Will: I need you to freeze the building.
Cryo: 88DDDD
Shadow: ???
Soi: I'm sorry, what--
Felix: …I assume you have a specific purpose in mind?
Will: If the entire building is encased in a sheild of ice, then it will be that much harder for anything to get in. It'll also help keep things sterile.
Tobias: -Uneasy- (…Hnnn, don't want to be trapped in a lab…)
Soi: But that won't work forever!
Will: Doesn't have to. I have an idea, but I need time.
Felix: I can try to help with that. I do have the Douse Drop and the Frost Jewel.
Tobias: I thought—
Felix: I'll explain later, if we get the chance. What else, William?
Will: -Turns to the terminal- We NEED those comms back online as well. Except there is this jamming signal in the way, and I can't seem to get PAST it.
Tobias: Gimme a moment.
[The light faded from his eyes, leaving him distinctly… lifeless.]
Felix: …??? .-.
[The screens flickered rapidly with lines of code. They were very similar to what Will had seen at the start of this mess, only not glitched out this time.]
[PING!]
[ALL COMMUNICATIONS NOW ONLINE.]
Avi: Eeeey! : D Nice one, Toby!
Felix: Is he…?
Shadow: …His Awareness is in the mainframe… >>;; Give him a moment to return to his chassis.
[After about a minute, the coding closed out and the light returned to the masked child's eyes.]
Shadow: -It is always a bit unnerving that you can do that at WILL-
Tobias: -Yeah, it can be a bit of an…-
[He paused for a moment, and then gave a sheepish grin.]
Tobias: -…out of body experience…-
Shadow: —…
Shade: -Groaaaaans--
Avi: : DDDD
Shadow: Avi, this is somehow your fault.
Avi: -I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY-
Pyro: -FACEPALM-
Will: -Smiles to himself-
Tobias: The comms work, but you're not going to get much range. :gs_frown~1: All the cell towers and radio towers in the city seem to be on the fritz.
Will: (With luck...this just might work...)
Will: ...
Will: (...But I'm going to have to...tell them...just what is causing this...)
Will: ...
Will: That's quite alright. It's enough.
Felix: For?
Will: -Turns-
Will: ...
Will: -Seems to...hesitate-
Will: ...
Will: Soichiro brought back some very vital information when he came back from the prison...and it ties into how we're going to stop this storm at the source.
Felix: Alright. And that would be?
Will: The epicenter of this "Xel Storm" seems to be originating from the Battle Colosseum.
Will: From the... information Soichiro received from Dr. Blackwell, it was revealed to us that the virus...is actually in the hands of a CDN named Trinity.
Beck: !!
Brand: A...A CDN? This whole time?!
Shadow: :gs_drop~1: -FLATLY, even for him- That makes sense.
Tobias: …???
Tobias: Uh…
Shadow: -Glances over at Tobias- What.
Tobias: -Seems a bit confused- (But it felt so much like Will’s coding…) …Nothing, I guess…?
Will: >>;; It's safe to assume CherryDynamics did have a hand in all this like we all suspected... though that still doesn't explain that voice...
Will: Regardless--Soi?
Soi: :gs_drop~1:
Soi: Dr...Blackwell told us that Trinity's purpose was to grow and evolve by assimilating other robots and their data...
Shadow: …
Tobias: …
Soi: Except...
Soi: From...from what he told me, she isn't... aware of it...
Tobias: …Not really, no…
[He sounds… really distracted.]
Tobias: Not… not intent so much as drive.
Tobias: Very…
Tobias: Reminded me of Kalinka directing one of her plays…
Cryo: ...uh, wat.
Felix: I think I'm missing something.
Shadow: … Tobias sort of… got eaten earlier.
Shadow: Seems there were side effects.
Tobias: >>;;; Just. You know how Kalinka just has an idea and is in charge and carries it out? It was like that.
Tobias: Wanted… she wanted everything ordered her way.
Tobias: She didn't seem to want to… hurt as much as… augh, it's so hard to explain with words…
Tobias: Keep, she wanted to keep.
Tobias: -She wanted to keep Avi and didn't like it when I got upset, we ALL got headaches, I most definitely make everything worse ever- |(
Avi: ...
Avi: -Aaaaand we're gonna just NOPE right behind Mic, thank you--
Pyro: ...
Pyro: And this...Trinity...
Pyro: Is she...the one causing this storm as well?
Will: ...
Will: Based on what we heard...
Will: I believe so.
Felix: And the significance of that is what, exactly?
Shadow: …You may want to reword that…
Felix: …I apologize. What I meant to say is this: why is this "Trinity"'s existence of meaning to your idea? Do you know something about counteracting it?
Will: -Looks towards the feed- If we can somehow disable Trinity herself...
Felix: …
Felix: -Thoughtful expression-
Felix: …
Shadow: …What is it?
Felix: -Shakes his head- It's possible that the weapon Master Cossack had would be of some use, but probably only effective at a short range and a very high setting.
Tobias: Oh God no.
Tobias: The highest setting on that thing is torturous, my head hurts just THINKING about it, nnnng…
Tobias: You might break Cardinal WORSE if you set that off like that, please tell me you have a better idea!
Will: And I'm not sure if that would work as effectively on a Xel construct. Either way, we'd need to be close.
Shadow: With all due respect, Doctor, she ate Tobias, and as a result, blacked out from sensory overload from our server.
Shadow: So yes, it theoretically could work.
Shadow: But against such a mass? I have my doubts as to how long… and it would be at a price.
Shadow: That weapon was designed specifically to work against robots using a Wily operating system. It will work on other things, but those most of all.
Shadow: Allow me to remind you: Cardinal, Tobias, and myself all use the DWN_OS. Also… Cardinal has no backup. Neither do I.
Shadow: If there are ANY other options, perhaps we should pursue those first before testing it out with us in range, please…
Soi: Then what do we do? How do we get in close, nobody can get past all that infected Xel to even GET that close to the Colosseum!
Felix: …
Felix: I can give you about seven minutes, tops. Twice. That will be all.
Felix: Will that be enough?
Will: Very. Soi: -Excuse me--
Will: ...
Will: -Turns to Beck-
Beck: ...
Will: ...
Beck...
Will: I have no right to ask you this, but you're the ONLY person that the virus cannot infect...
Will: We can have Avi airdrop you through the roof of the Colosseum after Felix clears the way.
Soi: WHAT--
Soi: You want to send BECK, INTO THAT--ALONE--
Felix: : /
Felix: I can try to go with him, but I cannot guarantee I would be of much help other than healing and shielding.
Felix: I do not have a Cleric's Ring, either. I gave mine to Jack.
Felix: Adepts tend to… well. Let's just say that tapping into Alchemy the wrong way would be lethal.
Felix: I do not think anyone else here even has a chance.
Felix: I'm sorry, Master Sanda… but we don't really have a choice.
Soi: -Sputters- We don't even know what it's like in there--!
Beck: No...we don't...
Beck: But I'm going anyway.
Beck: -Turns to Felix- And I'd feel much better knowing that you're here to help fend off the Xel Storm.
Beck: Thanks for the offer, though.
Felix: Very well.
Tobias: Um…
Tobias: That's great and all, but—
Tobias: I…
Tobias: I'll need to restart one of the towers for you to have comm range…
Will: But we don't have anything IMMEDIATELY available--
Avi: -YES WE DO--
Avi: : D We can restart my tower!
Tobias: <'3
Felix: Avi, I don't think you'll have time to fly both of them. And I'll need to come with you to clear the sky for the way back, so he can't use Arizona.
Felix: Is there any other way for him to get there without going into the streets?
Tobias: …
Tobias: -Looks over at Shadow-
Shadow: …
Shadow: ?
Brand: ...!
Brand: {Excellent idea...}
Shadow: ?
Shadow: {Forgive me, Master—I do not understand…}
Brand: {Can you take Tobias with you to the tower using your powers?}
Shadow: {I…}
[He seemed to be… struggling somewhat. His data fuzzed a bit.]
Shadow: {I… have never used such power intentionally, so… so to speak…}
[He has to take in a deep breath to recenter his forcus and fight off disorientation before he pressed his hands together and bowed.]
Shadow: {But if that is your command, I shall endeavor to carry out your will.}
Brand: -Bows- {It would not hurt to try. Thank you, Shadow.}
Avi: -You got this, Shads-- -Thumbs up--
Felix: Alright. Cryosphere, outside with me, please.Felix: Avi, Beck, get ready.
Cryo: AW YEAH, time to make my own winter wonderland again, kyahaha--
Pyro: ... -We're going to need to get warmer clothes-
Bat: -Is NOT looking forward to this--
Felix: Shade…
Shade: . . .
Felix: I want you, Brandish, and Pyrogen to be at the roof when we're ready to go.
Pyro: ...Very well.
Shadow: Dare I ask why?
Felix: Some time ago, in the duel against Countershade, I had enough self-control not to do what I shall be doing shortly.
[Felix starts walking off.]
Felix: This may be your only chance ever to see for yourselves what WOULD have happened otherwise and appreciate what you were spared and WHY I made such a choice.
Shade: ...
Avi: .-.;;;;;;
[He halts for a moment, taking out a dagger.]
Felix: (Bah, can't believe I almost forgot about this—no time for a braid, though…)
[SCRRRRP!]
Felix: -Takes off his cloak, putting his shorn ponytail and the dagger inside it, placing the bundle aside- I'll meet you on the roof.
[With that, he leaves.]
Shadow: […]
Shadow: -Frowns just slightly at this- ({...The ritual preparation in the face of death.... Is the situation truly that dire outside?})
Tobias: -Also frowns, but pokes his brother- "Are you ready to leave, or...? Do you know how to get to the Tower?"
Shadow: [...]
Shadow: -...Slightly increased anxiety and self-doubt- I told you, I have never used it before intentionally with full presence. It is...
Shadow: -We are trying to find the program, but everything is... obscured...-
Tobias: [Sweatdrop] "Well, how did you do it last time?"
[Shadow seemed a bit stressed (for what people were used to seeing, anyway) at first, but he managed to stay calm and focus.]
Shadow: ...Need.
Tobias: [...]
Tobias: ???
Shadow: I cannot... verbalize it more than that, just... instinct.
Tobias: -Looks over at Brand with something of a helpless expression at being at a loss for what to make of this-
Shadow: -Distinctly anxious, though doing a good job of not showing much outward sign of it-
Brand: […]
[After some moments of thought, Brand moved next to his student with a steady, calm gaze and gently placed a hand on his shoulder--where he could see, so that he wasn't alarmed.]
Brand: {Shadow...}
Brand: {Focus. Calm yourself and clear your mind. Find your ki. Remember what I have taught you.}
Brand: {You must stay with Tobias and keep him safe while I assist the others here. I know we have never touched upon your powers beforehand in our lessons...}
Brand: {But I believe you can do this.}
Brand: Hai?
Shadow: […]
[He seems very fearful for a moment, and like he wants to voice it.
However, he instead chooses to close his eyes and forcefully focus, taking all of this into consideration.]
Shadow: […]
[A tense pause. The situation was stressful, but Shadow seemed to be actively putting all the noise out of his mind.
He was growing less tense, and seemed to be calming down…
…though it was matched with a sense of dulling Awareness, as well.]
Tobias: …?
Tobias: -Hesitantly reaches out a hand—-
Shadow: -PING-
Shadow: {̦͎̘C͉͓̉óͩͩ͋m̱̝͔m̬̰̩a͇͓̩n̨͎̪ḍ̪̺ͭ ̢̙̳a̱͊ͦc̱̖̞k͔͓̲n̵͖̞o͔̞̺ẘ̦͍̯l̾́e̜̹͈d͕́̆g̛̺̞e̤̪̙d̝̦͚.̴̘̃}̑ͫ̽
Tobias: -Pulls his hand back- ??? o~o?;;
Brand: -Was NOT expecting that--
Tobias: -Uh—-
[Shadow opens his eyes, and moves swiftly.
He breaks free from Brandish's grip and grabs his brother—]
Tobias: Waugh!
[—and the both of them swiftly vanish into the shadows.]
Brand: [!]
Avi: ...
Avi: Uh...everyone just saw that right now, right?
Beck: Whoa...
Beck: I...I guess that worked? (That was kinda cool...WEIRD, but cool...)
Brand: . . . (...What WAS that...?)
Shade: Oi.
Shade: We can figure that out later, we gotta GO.
Avi: Right--
Avi: I'mma head onto the roof and prep for lift off, see ya--
Pyro: Alright. No time to waste.
Pyro: -PING- I want the rest of you to prep yourselves while Cryo freezes the building. Our priority is protecting Sanda Technologies and everyone inside.
Dyna: -Bzzt, got it--
Mic: -Mic be WALL-
Bat: -Affirmative, will be on standby-
Pyro: -Nods-
[Pyro then leads his brothers--Avi, Brand and then Shade--towards the stairs that lead to the roof. The other Mighties file away to prepare for the coming battle ahead.]
Beck: Coming--
[Beck turns to follow suit to the roof--until he's stopped momentarily by his father's hand.]
Beck: […][?]
Will: -Frowns- Before you go...come over here for a moment.
Beck: --Dad, I'll be okay--
Will: Not that.
Beck: --?
[Will leads Beck to a quiet corner of the lab, kneeling down gently to get to his eye level. His voice is hushed, as if he was trying to stay quiet.]
Will: There's...there's something you need to know.
Will: About Trinity.
Beck: [!]
Will: Based on what we've seen and what Soichiro told us...
Will: I...I think it is safe to assume...
Will: ...That you and Trinity possess the same power.
Beck: (--wha--?)
Will: It would explain the Xel Storm outside, and from what Tobias told us of her...her nature...
Will: -STRUGGLES to word this-
Will: ...And if that is correct...
Will: Then she does not know how to control it.
Will: Not like you do.
Beck: ... (--! Wait...)
Beck: (Back at the highway and...all those times...)
Beck: (That wasn't just her--?)
Will: I'm sure you've sensed it at least more than once.
Beck: ...
Beck: It...makes sense now that I think about it...
Will: Beck...
Will: When you get there...
Will: When you see her...
Will: Please--please, if you can, teach her how.
Will: Save her.
Beck: ...
[Beck falls quiet for a moment, gaze on the floor. It's about a second or two before he looks up again, eyes glowing a bright emerald.]
Beck: I understand.
Beck: I'll do it. I'll save Trinity.
[It's not very completely obvious, but there's some intense emotion his father is going through--Beck could tell, because Will doesn't answer right away. The Mighty Number gently places a hand on the Doctor's arm...and gives a reassuring smile.]
Beck: Don't worry. ^^ I've done it before, Dad. I can do it one more time.
[This seems to bring Will out of it--and he gently exhales, placing his own hand on his son's head.]
Will: ...I know you will, Beck...
Will: I know you will.
Will: Go. And please be careful...
Beck: Hm-hmm. I will!
[He gave a bright smile.]
Beck: I'll let you know when I'm inside.
Beck: I'll come back with her, promise--!
[He turns on his heel and starts bolting for the stairs--he had to catch up with the others--]
Beck: I'll make contact as soon as I'm inside--I'll hear from you then!
Will: Yes...good luck.
[As Beck disappears up the stairs, Will's hopeful expression falls to one of concern and deep thought, hand tightly curling into a fist near his mouth.]
Will: (Never...)
Will: (Not once did I ever imagine it would turn out like this...that this is how you two would meet...)
Will: (Two of my proudest creations, squaring off...!)
Will: (Please...please let them both be alright...)
[hr]
{SANDA ENTERPRISES: ROOFTOP}
[Felix was already there by the time that everyone had arrived. He had summoned Arizona in advance, presumably for the sake of expediency.
He looked a bit worn out. It was strange to see him with short hair and without his cape or his sword—he almost looked like a different person.]
Felix: Is everyone ready?
Beck: -Doing a final system check- Yeah, just about.
Avi: Ready for lift off when you are, bro--
Brand: ...
[MN.7 to MN.9] //: {...Be careful.}
[MN.9 to MN.7] //: Hai, Nii-san.
Shade: -Looks out into the horizon- (...Avi wasn't kidding. It's a goddamn MESS out there...)
Shade: (...at...)
Shade: (At least we got you back here, Songbird...)
Shade: (Because if we didn't, And Ah' was still...then..)
Brand: -Ping-
Brand: -Very gentle data- Shade.
Shade: ...
Shade: -Tips hat back down- ...best of luck t'ya, Beck.
Beck: -Ping of confirmation and reassurance-
Pyro: ... (...This will be over soon, Shade...)
Pyro: -Turns to Felix- We're ready.
[Felix looked at the sky with a grim expression. It was growing dark, just as he had foreseen.]
Felix: [...]
[His expression became firm and resolute. He started glowing gold.]
Beck: (...Psynergy...)
[Djinn began appearing, one by one. As each one appeared, Felix seemed to grow weaker and weaker—but the air was tense with energy.
VERY tense.]
[Felix took in a deep breath as one final Djinn appeared on his shoulder.
For once, Echo didn’t have inane commentary.]
Echo: Calling eight of us from the getgo? You must be really in need of some serious power.
Felix: You could say that.
Shade: (...Was only four when he fought with me...now eight?)
Shade: (What the hell's he doin'--?)
Beck: ...
Beck: (I can...feel it, like...like it's...)
Beck: -Eyes glow a bright green- (Almost... familiar...)
[They circled around him.]
Felix: [...]
[He narrowed his eyes and pressed his mouth into a thin line, flaring with a deep gold aura.
Four of the Djinn shot into the sky in a swirling spiral.]
Brand: [!]
[There was a massive blast of energy that cleared the sky just enough for them to see the next bit.]
Felix: -Low tone- ...The Venus Clan were considered weak and lowly. Even now, they are remembered only as “The Forsaken Clan.”
[A figure that looked like a knight with wings appeared in the sky. A colossal figure with a shield of sorts that looked like a lion’s head. He held a rather familiar looking sword—something that looked like a giant version of the Sol Blade.]
Avi: -OH GLITCH--
Pyro: [!][!][!]
Brand: -Eyes WIDE with shock and awe-
Shade: -Very alarmed data--
[If Felix noticed their alarm, he certainly didn’t show it. He was looking to the sky, his tone becoming harsher.]
Felix: But Venus itself is not a weak element. And the power of the Djinn calls upon the might of forces of nature itself.
[The being pointed the “shield” down at the swarm, and an alarming level of destructive energy began to swirl beneath it.]
Beck: !!!!!
Felix: Stand and bear witness to the greatest power Venus alone is willing to offer to mortal man in the present age.
[Except now, it was clear. That was no mere shield—
—that was a weapon.]
Beck: -Whoooa...-
((Lovely gift art from the amazing Neshirys! Thank you, Neshi!))
Felix: Brace yourselves, and stand witness to the power...
[An absolutely EXPLOSIVE blast of Venus energy came ROARING down out of the sky!]
[Felix used JUDGEMENT!]
Felix: ...of the end of days!
[The sky was overtaken by a flare of blinding light. There was a deafening roar as the sphere of energy hit the Colosseum, sending a massive shockwave in all directions.
Everything was overtaken by a wave of light and raw power, and the world became nothing but a blinding white void.]
Shade: NNNNGH--!
Avi: -OWOWOW, CAN'T SEE, HELP--!-
Pyro: -AUGH--
Beck: (Ow! Nng, really would like to see now...)
[Well. Nothing but a blinding void and the intensity of their own awe and terror.]

[When the light faded, they all suddenly surged with a rush of energy. It seemed to enhance and enrich their very Xel with the same kind of energy they associated with Felix.
And the sky? Well.
The sky was now completely clear.]
Beck: [!]
Brand: -Blinks- {...The sky--}
((Pyro's wide eyed at the sky just kinda in awe and shock at how CLOSE Felix was to just casting this before))
Avi: -WHISTLES- Breaking weather report: It's gonna be clear skies for the next seven minutes! : D!
Beck: (I had no idea Felix could DO that--!)
Pyro: --! Shade--?
[Shade wasn't faring well, but at least he was still standing--]
Shade: -Mngh...gimmie...gimmie a sec...-
Beck: -Runs up to Felix-
Beck: That was AWESOME! : D
[Felix gives a wry smile out of the corner of his mouth as he gets ready to take off on his phoenix, Arizona.]
Felix: Oh, you’ll be seeing it at least once more.
Shade: ...
Shade: [Sweatdrop] (Yew gotta be KIDDING me, how the HELL was I supposed to even SURVIVE that if he pulled that out way back when--)
Felix: -Looks behind him at the others, and at Shade in particular-
Felix: [...]
Felix: Farewell, my friends.
Felix: If fate is as kind to us now as it always has been, we will survive this... but not without one final, bitter price.
Felix: If it becomes relevant, then the Mars Clan will want to know what happened. Should that happen… let them know that I went down fighting.
Beck: --...
Brand: . . .
Pyro: ...-Nods- Acknowledged.
Shade: -...Tips hat down in respect- ...Ya got it, friend.
Avi: -Whirls propellers- Alright, Beckers-- buckle up and get ready for take off!
Beck: --Yeah, I--right. Roger that.
Felix: Take the lead. It’s time to put an end to this.
[Avi gives a thumbs up at the Venus Adept as he grabs Beck's arm and takes off, lifting both of them off of Sanda Tech's helipad.
Arizona crows loudly and gives off a jet of flame before taking to the sky.]
Pyro: (...Godspeed, Nine...)
Shade: Don't do anythin' stupid on the way there, Six--! You get back in one damn piece yerself!
Brand: ... (Good luck...)
Avi: LOVE YA TOO--
Beck: -Waves- I'll be back soon!
Beck: Promise!
[Avi turns his sights to the Colosseum and plots a course, eyeing for one spot on the arena in particular.]
Avi: Okay! The plan is to air drop Beck on the Colosseum roof!
Avi: The roof's shaped like a giant gear--we're gonna be aiming for the hole in the middle!
Felix: Sounds simple enough.
Avi: -Looks down at Beck- I can't exactly go in there myself, Beckaroni--so you're gonna have something of a rough landing. Use my form if you need to slow your descent, okay?
Beck: -Thumbs up- Roger, Avi!
Felix: -Squints- Looks like we have trouble incoming.
Avi: --!
[Looking down was becoming disorienting due to movement. It would appear that the Xel was already gathering again....]
Avi: Uh oh--
Beck: (Never...never seen so much Xel in one place...)
Beck: [Sweatdrop] (It's chaos...)
Beck: (I have to hurry...)
Felix: It won’t be too long before this becomes airborne, I should think.
Avi: -DEEP shudder of fear, nnnng...-
Felix: Peace, Avi—I left one Djinn for you specifically, in case something goes terribly wrong.
Avi: <'3 -Thanks, man...-
[He gestured sharply with his wrist, and one of the five Djinn following him floated over near Avi.]
Felix: This one is very powerful, and can heal just about every ailment. If we get separated on the way back, you can use it if you find need. It should listen to you.
Avi: -Waves to the Djinn- -Hi, I'm Avi- ^^
Beck: -Small smile-
Felix: Avi, bank to your left in a moment.
[He seemed to be surging with Venus energy again.]
Felix: Things are about to get intense in the streets.
[Volcanic jets of Venus Psynergy erupted from below, disrupting the clamor to engulf the building.]
Beck: (There won't be anything to save at this rate--!)
[Felix looked exhausted as he stopped—utterly drained, somehow.]
Avi: (...Man, he's gotta be running out of juice at this point...)
Avi: (And he STILL has to do the Judgement thing again...)
Beck: --!
Beck: -TUGS ON AVI—-
Beck: MIGHT WANNA GO FASTER—
Avi: ?
Felix: [!]
[Avi looks behind him just to see the shadow of something very big heading their way--]
Avi: -OH CRAP--
[A MASSIVE wave of infected Xel, rushing directly at the flying heroes will EVERY intent of swatting them RIGHT out of the sky--and a fall from this height would not only mean SERIOUS injury, but also crashing right into the THICK of the mass consuming the Colosseum!]
Felix: !!!
Avi: AAAH--
[Felix and Arizona take a hard acceleration to get up front.
Arizona screes and blasts quite a large portion of the advancing wave with Mars Psynergy, which takes on the appearance of a blanket of flames.]
Beck: UP!
Avi: -RIGHT--
[Avi shoots upwards to gain more altitude as they approach the Colosseum. The Xel Storm--now beginning to recover from the Judgement cast--almost seemed to hiss and screech at their presence.]
Avi: Approaching the drop zone--!
Felix: We won’t have time to slow down! Things are getting too obstructed!
Avi: [3 sweatdrops]
Avi: Told you it'll be a rough landing--
Beck: It's okay! Just aim for the center and let go!
Beck: I got your form on the ready if I need to adjust, just time it right!
Avi: 10-4, RudaBecka--
[Avi sets up to preform a fly-by the arena, and winces when he hears static and buzzing in his ears the closer and closer he gets.]
Avi: Mnng...
Avi: (This jamming signal is messing with my instruments--gotta go with my gut--)
Avi: Dropping in T-minus 6...5...4...
Avi: 3--
Avi: 2--
Avi: 1!
[Aviator lets his grip slip, and his core skips a few beats as he watches his youngest brother fall away, down, down into the half eaten arena's depths. He actively has to FIGHT the instinct to fly and grab him back, banking hard to the right to get a better view.]
Avi: (Come on come on come on--!)
[And to his surprise...
Beck didn't even need to use his form at all. It was a clean drop, right through the center of the opening!]
Avi: : D!!
Avi: HE'S IN--
Felix: [!][!][!]
Felix: MOVE—!
Avi: ?!
[The Xel had arched over behind them, creating a sickly dome that was rapidly closing.]
Avi: Oh sh--
Avi: RUN—!
Felix: Head straight home, Avi—! Destroy obstacles if you have to!
[Another SURGE of power—]
[Felix used JUDGEMENT!]
[The spiraling Djinn broke a hole right through the top of the dome!]
Felix: You first, GO—!
Avi: -SCREE--
[Bearing witness to the might of the Judgement cast not MINUTES AGO, Avi was NOT keen on being anywhere near the blast radius. He made a beeline for the new opening in the dome, blasting into his Jet mode now that he no longer had precious cargo to worry about.]
Avi: Not good not good NOT GOOD--
[He escapes, thankfully, and for a moment, he catches a small glimpse of his radio tower in the distance...
It was lighting up!]
Avi: !!!
Avi: (He did it!)
[The radio tower blinked with distinct signals suggesting it was Online and in use, no less.]
Avi: (I owe you guys one--!)
Avi: (For now--)
[For now, he needed to get home.]
Avi: -Looks back as he readjusts his course-
Avi: Felix--
[The Adept looked a bit exasperated that Avi was slowing down in even the slightest.]
Felix: Just go already, don’t—
[The Adept was cut short when the Xel coiled and lashed out at him. He was hit dead-on with so much force that it knocked him right off of his ride!]
Avi: [!] FELIX--!
Arizona: SCREEEEE!
[The phoenix dove after him, catching him briefly—but it was to no avail. Another strike hit, and the damage was so great that Arizona burst into nothing but flames, sending Felix into a freefall.]
Avi: NO--!
[There was a brief flash of dazed fear in the Adept’s eyes—an instinctive fear, one of the oldest and deepest fears.
And yet, it was also reflective of something chilling: a cold sense of acceptance and dread, and a familiarity suggesting he had been through this before… and was resigned to the outcome it would bring.]
Avi: Nononono--!
[All of this was visible only for a moment...
And then?
He was gone.]
Avi: FELIX!!
Avi: (I gotta--!)
[Ah, if only.]
[Fate had other plans, however.]
[The swarm of Xel dispersed once more, though it wouldn't be long before the storm reformed again--even now, it was trying to reconstitute itself, and Avi could almost FEEL the malice it exerted...]
Kkkk...
Avi: --!
<DLN-008>: > Avi!
Avi: Toby--! (I almost forgot we could still use comms between us--!)
<DLN-008>: > Avi hurry he’ll be fine he’s fallen off lots of things before and you need to hurry because that knight thing is getting ready to fire again—
[The vivid memory of what he had JUST witnessed flashed through Avi’s mind.]
Avi: I--right--
Avi: Roger that, heading home--
Avi: (Pleaaaaase be okay, Felix, mnng--!)
[With a final sweep of the streets below, Avi kicked his jets into high gear, blasting off towards Sanda Technologies with all due haste...]

Sketch commission for my lovely friends! This is the third in a series of commissions I’m doing for them involving their AU crossover fanfiction, Allies Obstruct! It’s got robot, and robots, and smart scientists, and cool people, and despicable villains, and even a few OCs to boot (like Jack here)!
I’m also super excited to announce that they’ve started posting their fic so you can have a look at the intro here! Or say hi to them over on their RP blogs @codedhopes and @mowseries!

[CHERRYDYNAMICS HQ BUILDING, CEO OFFICE SUITE.]
[Gregory Graham had little silver lining to go on at this point.
Not only were those Sanda Tech brats literally demolishing his factory (and costing him millions to boot!), the virus that had seemed to come from out of nowhere was threatening to spread to the other Continental servers--
And now the GOVERNMENT was sniffing around where they SHOULDN'T be, and Blackwell could very well be either DEAD or running amok!
And now there was that foreign intern, the fat Japanese doctor and the PRESIDENT herself knowing far too much--]
Graham: -...Ngh-
Graham: Keep it together, Greg...
[No, no need to panic--
She was still safely tucked away, albet running everything at this point, but still contained--and he had influences in Homeland and Defense, and his Sentator friend, of course--and if nothing else, he ALWAYS had that ace in the hole if things ever got that desperate.
He had options. It was all like stocks. It wasn't the end just yet.
And if he were to go down, he'll be damned if he wasn't going down alone.]
Graham: (I just have to make a few private calls, pull some favors...)
Graham: (Make sure she is under wraps and try to sail though this--)
[Knock Knock.]
Graham: --??
Graham: -Pushes the intercom on his desk- Darcy, I told you to not let anyone in here--
"Uh, yeah, he isn't--he didn't listen to me--"
"... And it's Daisy, not--"
[CLICK.]
Graham: Tch.
Graham: (Fine, I'll call whatever's left of security once he gets in here--)
Graham: Open.
[The door recognizes the verbal command and slides open without a sound.]
Graham: --?
Graham: What the--
Will: Hello, Mr. Graham.
[William White walks into the room as soon as Graham opened it, not once waiting for permission to enter.]
Will: Am I interrupting something?
Graham: White?
Graham: How the HELL did you get up here--
Will: Oh, I wanted to. Your staff seems to be rather, ah-- lacking since the virus struck.
Will: Nonetheless.
Will: I didn't come here for idle chatter, so I'm going to get right to the point.
Will: It was you who activated Trinity, didn't you?
Graham: -Sputters--
Graham: Wha--
Graham: What are you TALKING about--
Graham: (How does he know about HER?!)
Will: Greg. It's a little...
[His eyes turn dull and utterly emotionless.]
Will: ...Too late to cry dummy, at this point.
Graham: --?!
Graham: (That look--what is THAT look, why is it--?)
Will: Dr. Blackwell wasn't around to stop you this time, wasn't he?
Will: And yet you're trying to scapegoat his father again, just the same.
Graham: --?!!!
[Will walks across the room with a poised grace, almost too perfect, as he turns his back away from Graham.]
Will: -Sigh-
Will: It was NEVER about progress with you...
Will: Or the will, the drive to make the world a better place than what we found it...
Will: It was always money.
Will: -Angry-
Will: Just. Money.
Will: That's--
[He turns, a FIERCE expression breaking through the emotionless mask he wore to EXPLODE in RAGE!]
Will: --ALL YOU E V E R CARED ABOUT--!
Graham: -Falls back into his chair--
Will: Never about HIM OR ME OR EVEN HER!
Will: -Advances- All you EVER cared about was YOURSELF and this EVIL EMPIRE you've built on NOTHING but the PAIN AND SUFFERING OF OTHERS--!
Will: MY PAIN AND SUFFERING! T H E I R PAIN AND SUFFERING!
Will: H E R PAIN AND SUFFERING--!
Will: And YOU--
Will: When you pieced her back together, did you feel anything at all? No, because you would even BRING BACK THE DEAD to justify your own ENDS!
Will: YOU THINK I WOULDN'T NOTICE, GREGORY GRAHAM?!
Graham: N--this isn't my FAULT--!
Graham: Her warning label didn't SPECIFY all this, not specifically--
Will: Warning label--
[He laughs. Bitterly.]
Will: Warning label, WARNING LABEL, HE PUT A WARNING LABEL--
Will: Oh, that's just RICH.
Will: And even then--You didn't listen.
Graham: I--
Will: THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT--!
Will: Trinity, my friends, my FAMILY, MY OWN CHILDREN--!
Will: And even this VIRUS, isn't it?!
Graham: Nono, THIS THING ISN'T OUR FAULT, DON'T YOU PUT THIS ON ME, WHITE--
Graham: I don't know HOW you got this information, but I can very well RUIN you if you so much as--
[Will once again laughs at the face of Graham's supposed threat.]
Will: Is that supposed to scare me, Greg?
Will: What are you going to do? Send your PEOPLE after me?
Will: I've survived them once. I can do it AGAIN.
Graham: --?!?
Will: I am. Not. Afraid of YOU.
Will: Not anymore.
Will: Trinity was my project. You and Blackwell ultimately deemed her a failure.
Graham: !
Will: But she was an educational one, if anything. I learned. Oh, I learned.
Will: And I put EVERYTHING that I had learned from her, from everything that I experienced...
Will: ...All of it, and the good that came from it...
Will: ...Into Mighty No. 9.
Graham: (WHAT--)
Will: Beck is now our only hope of stopping what YOU have sowed.
Will: AT THE VERY LEAST, IF I CAN'T STOP YOU MYSELF--
[He swipes away the various objects on Greg's desk aside, including some very heavy paperweights--]
Will: --HE CAN!
[There’s a muffled CRUNCH and a hissing noise, followed by some leaking liquid.]
Will: --?!?
Graham: What the--
Will: Nnngh!
[He turns his attention back to Graham.]
Will: You--
Will: You honestly think you can get away with everything you've DONE?
Will: After HER?
Graham: --.....
Graham: Wait...
Graham: Waitwaitwait WAIT A SECOND--
Will: --??
Graham: You...
Will: --!
Will: (....Uh...Uh Oh--)
Graham: YOU!
Graham: I didn't RECOGNIZE you with that--that RIDICULOUS HAIR DO--
Graham: But you're--
Graham: YOU'RE BILL BLACKWELL--!
Will: ......
Bill: . . . .
Bill: You were always a bit slow on the uptake, weren't you.
Bill: All these years, Graham, and you STILL haven't changed.
Bill: It nearly makes me feel SORRY for you.
Bill: N e a r l y.
Bill: ...But you know what?
Bill: You're wrong.
Will: I'm NOT Bill Blackwell.
Will: And I HAVEN'T been.
Will: For a VERY. Long. Time.
Graham: HA!
Graham: -Sneers- Oh, you think you're so SMART, thinking that changing your name and identity will change who you really are.
Graham: I'm honestly impressed, though. I really did think you were dead after you just vanished.
Will: -Snorts-
Will: Reports of my demise have been GREATLY exaggerated, Mr. Graham.
Graham: You accosted me, Bill.
Graham: YOU'RE the idiot here, coming back and building those Mighty Numbers even after what YOU did to her.
Graham: They don't even know they're really just BLACKWELLS, do they?!
Will: ..........
Graham: I THOUGHT not.
Will: Leave them out of this, Graham.
Graham: Oh, really, alright, let me just turn back time and stop them from becoming infected in the FIRST PLACE?
Graham: They were DOOMED the moment you created them, Bill, and that ISN'T just their namesake talking!
Will: —Nnnnngh...
Graham: Your old man was RIGHT about you.
Graham: Really, Bill. I thought that a BLACKWELL genius such as yourself wouldn't RETURN to the scene of a crime—what occurred here all those years ago was tantamount to MURDER.
Will: Both of you MADE ME DO IT—!
Graham: But I wasn't the one holding the metaphorical knife, wasn't I?
Will: Graham—!
Graham: I said I would RUIN you.
Graham: It'll be a VERY nice bonus to see everything that you've worked SO hard to accomplish just CRUMBLE away, hm?
Graham: You, those Mighty Numbers, your fat friend and his brother, and that little Russian intern that you CLEARLY have connections with.
Graham: Once the WORLD knows that Dr. William White is a LIE AND THE SON OF A MAD GENIUS—
[WHACK—]
[Gregory Graham's vision went bright as William curled a fist and socked him across the face, causing the CEO to tumble backwards into the floor.
There was a burning sensation as something ate away at the super expensive suit he was wearing, too!]
Graham: -NGH!-
[SMACK—]
[A sneaker plants itself squarely on Graham's chest to KEEP him there.]
((Pic—Will v Graham))
Will: I am only going to say this once.
Will: If you ever.
Will: E v e r.
Will: Threaten or lay one hand on EVERYTHING I love and care about--
Will: I will TEAR you and this company ASUNDER.
Will: You PATHETIC excuse for a HUMAN being.
Will: You MONSTER.
[Will looks down on him with a BURNING hot gaze, like some kind of disgusting bug or rodent, not even worth the DIRT under his shoe that which is soiling the already ruined suit Greg was wearing.
And Graham?
Well, as one would expect, he was certainly no less than terrified, scared witless.]
Will: How fitting.
Will: I think I've gotten my POINT across, hm?
[There is a TOUCH of a evil grin that tugs at the corner of Will's lips.]
Will: Good talk.
[And just like that, Will steps off, carefully walks around the mess made, and makes his way back to the door.]
Will: I'm not paying for any of this, by the way, so you can forget about sending me a bill.
Will: I WAS the one that HELPED you, if you need a reminder.
[He waves back without turning around.]
Will: Enjoy the rest of your day, Mr. Graham.
Will: ... Because it is ABOUT to get a whole LOT worse.
[Click.]
[The room is dead silent.]
Graham: . . . .
Graham: (Bill Blackwell—)
Graham: (You—I'll—)
Graham: -OW MY NOSE— BLEEDING—-
Graham: DARCY—SOMEONE GET ME A DAMN FIRST AID KIT—!
Beep.
Graham: —?!?
Beep.
Graham: What the hell is that noise—
[A rather smushed Search Snake—having finally flickered to life, only to find itself incredibly damaged—scrapes itself out of the hiding place where it had been crushed by some paperweights. It was already leaking battery acid, but apparently it had more than one battery, because that wasn’t stopping it…]
Beep beep beep beep beep beep BEEP—
Graham: —?!?
Graham: -DIVES BEHIND THE DESK—-
Boom!
Graham: WHAT THE—
Graham: BIIIIIIILLL—!!
[BACK IN SANDA LABS SEVERAL HOURS LATER...]
Will: (Oof...)
Will: -Stepping out of the elevator- (I actually felt REALLY good about that. Huh.)
“Good afternoon, Doctor.”
Will: —?
Will: (Wait, that...voice--I've heard that voice before--)
Min: So good of you to join us again.
Will: —! (You—)
Des: Doctor. -Nod-
Will: ...I...er...
Will: (W-What is going on, why are THEY here?!)
Will: (Specifically, the President, no less—!)
Will: I...M-Madam President, I...was not expecting...
Min: I realize this, and I apologize. We were unable to contact you to discuss the matter.
[She motioned to a Secret Service member, who stepped forward and handed over a piece of paper. It was a faxed letter from Seijiro, explaining (in Japanese) that he had authorized… the use of the building for the President and some of her staff…?]
Will: (Wha—Seiji?! But—why, you—you know that—)
Will: (—Gh, but you didn't really have a choice, didn't you...)
Will: I...hn...
Will: I see...
Will: I suppose this is because the White House is...well....
Will: —But—why here? This is practically Ground Zero for the virus, and shouldn't there be—OTHER places for situations like this—?
Des: -Sighs—- Exactly what I proposed. <<
Min: It shouldn't be for too long, and I won't necessarily be staying, myself. I'm a busy woman.
Will: -Nervously looks between all the Secret Service members and staff- I...I see. Er....w-well then...
Min: I need to speak with you about the particulars of the arrangements immediately.
Will: R-Right now—? (Oh, God—)
Will: A—Are you sure? I mean we do have—Call, she can certainly show you around—
Will: Besides, I—I have repairs to do on my children posthaste—
Will: Since Soi isn't here, I'll have to do repairs myself...
Will: (And on all nine of them...)
Min: I can appreciate that, and I assure you that I too have my incentives for keeping the discussion as brief as possible. However, it is more than mere living arrangements that need to be discussed. While we may not be able to cover everything that I have in mind, there is one matter that cannot wait—[color=goldenrod]lives[/color] are at stake, and your input is crucial. It's in your best interest in a very personal way, Doctor, to no longer collude it.
Will: (L--Lives--?)
Will: (Wait...she can't mean--)
Des: -Ahem- There's also something else that that Madam President wishes to speak to you about...
Des: I don't exactly know the context behind it, but it's about your... championship fencing days...and Mighty No. 5.
Will: ....
[At that moment, Will would have taken the infected factory all over again instead of this. He pales, all the color rushing off of his face as he breaks into a cold sweat right there.]
Will: (Oh no—oh no, not this—)
Will: (G-Greg--Greg I can handle, but--h-h-her--)
Will: (She can do s-so much worse--)
Will: (She can't have figured it out so quickly, I left almost nothing--! Did they search my house?!)
Will: (Hnn...I can't, I—but—)
Will: (...Mikhail, Soi, my children...)
Min: -Shooing motion to the Secret Service members- Go secure an office where we can speak privately.
[They obey with only minimal hesitation, given that Desmond is also there and they are both armed.]
Des: -...Slightly concerned- Doctor White? You alright there?
Will: -Gulps- I...mn...I-I'm fine.
Will: ...though I could use a glass of water...
Min: Why don't you get us some drinks, Mister Secretary?
Des: -Takes that as his cue- Yes sir.
[Des briskly leaves with all due haste, leaving Will and The President of the United States alone. Will was highly on edge, nervously thumbing the strap of his laptop bang, looking away.]
Will: (...No...No more running...)
Will: (Oh, Soi, I...)
Will: (I really wish you were here...)
Min: Come along, Doctor. Let's get this over with, and then you can rejoin your family.
Will: ....
[He silently complies, hands on his arms and eyes to the floor. Almost as if he was walking to detention rather than just another office.
He was obliged to hand over his belongings before entering the office—clearly, the group had learned from the experience with Mikhail. It wasn't long before the doors shut behind them, and the two of them were alone.
Min let out a short huff of a sigh—of relief or weariness, it was hard to say.]
Min: Let's get right to the point.
[She turned to face Will, holding her hands in front of her with her left hand clasping her right wrist.]
Min: Your work so far has been remarkable, and is the best lead we have on combating the virus. We're all very grateful for what you and your family—particularly your youngest son—have been doing to save others in this time of crisis.
Min: We want to help you as much as we can.
Will: ... >> I haven't exactly made a cure yet, though. That part is proving to be very...difficult. (Trinity...)
Will: It's....not as simple as just doing away with it...
Will: -Sighs- The best thing we can do right now is continue to contain the virus and let me study it's workings so I can learn to counteract it. (Need more time...I need to know how to get those scripts from the code--)
[She was quiet for a moment at this, as if considering how to answer.]
Min: We will aid how we can if given direction. I know that initial encounters were… less than supportive, and I offer a sincere apology. If we had been properly informed and involved, it would not have reached such levels of hostility.
Will: ....
Will: >>;;; (Ugh...I never want to go through with that again. If I can get them NOT to just outright take a aggressive approach towards Trinity, then that's all I need...)
Will: It was...a very unpleasant experience. >~>;; One I don't think anyone here wants repeated.
Min: An accurate statement. And to that end, it's necessary to confront a problem that would otherwise come between full support or cooperation.
Min: There is a matter that would cause no small degree of distress for yourself and those involved if things continue as they are. Not only do I personally not wish to have to do so, but there is a professional incentive not to have such a major distraction at hand when it is imperative that you focus on your work.
Will: ….
Will: ...I...
Will: ... (Mikhail...)
Will: ....
Will: ....Dr. Cossack, you mean.
Will: -Sighs, of course...-
Min: That would be correct. I'm afraid the outlook is very bleak for him at the moment.
Will: (Gh...Mikhail...)
Will: I...could see that.
Will: (...I won't...won't let them hurt you, if it comes to that, I swear...)
((NOTE: Bill color as a shadow here))
Will: (I won't lose you too...)
Min: Do you? I'm afraid it's quite serious, and it's unclear whether he sees that or is simply undeterred by it.
Min: The charges he has taken upon himself would easily earn him a place as a CAL black spot mission.
Will: -Flinches- Gnn...
Will: (Hnn...No, I...I won't let that happen--)
Will: ....Mikhail...
Will: He doesn't...he's not...
Will: (Damn it, talk, Bill! He needs you right now, you can't be afraid--)
Min: Doctor…
Minerva: The situation is pitiable, but that—unfortunately—does not change the fundamental reasons why he is in trouble in the first place. In fact, the circumstances make it worse.
[She spoke as if from memory.]
Minerva: The fact remains that he is the authoritative force behind multiple highly powerful—and apparently unsupervised—Combat constructs who pose significant security threats. Threats made worse by their physiology, as most security measures rely on Xellular structure to be effective against a non-human attacker. Their immunity to such measures and ability to regenerate—some more than others, it would seem—make them very dangerous.
Will: Gh…! (I guess she was told they aren’t Xel…! Felix did mention that the Secretary knew the “truth”…)
Minerva: As for the Doctor himself… he is—by our standards—highly unconventional. He can defend himself and build without using Xel, and he appears to be a master at coding in his own right. Certainly, he has access to measures that can bypass traditional and cutting-edge firewalls alike. Furthermore, he’s also very clever: he was able to obtain well-hidden information the likes of which we have been seeking for months. He’s aware of dangerous secrets, and he has no qualms about stonewalling an investigation. If he chooses to, he can avoid detection completely, even from multiple governmental agencies of several countries. If let go free, there is no telling if he would ever be found again.
[She shakes her head.]
Minerva: He’s chosen to assume responsibility for the actions of his patients. That includes: two or three accounts of hacking through military-level security firewalls, two attempted murders and one additional threat thereof, one breaking-and-entering, and the destruction of federally owned property of national historic and cultural importance.
Will: (Hnn...I...Mikhail...)
Will: (He's not--!)
[Will doesn't know how to respond to this. The Queen's Finals, the White House, and the Military Base--the last of which was HIS fault entirely--it was all roaring back with a frightful vengeance, one that threatened to consume all that he held dear. But how to voice against this, when the leader of the nation could discredit all that he would say--
--simply because he was not the man he SAYS he is?]
Will: I...
Will: -Clearly very upset- He's not...please, he isn't--he's a good man, please--
[Her expression softened, and she interlocked her fingers, holding her hands up near her chin in thought.]
Min: …
Min: …There is still hope. There is a chance.
Will: --? (I...what?)
Min: There is yet a chance that he may be spared.
Will: --!
Will: R--Really-- (--Wait--why?)
Will: (--I should at least hear her out, but...)
Will: (If she knows, then...?)
Will: How?
[She was quiet for a moment again before she spoke up.]
Min: Taken all together, the pieces paint a grim picture for your friend, and one that is not so easily forgiven.
Min: Taken piece by piece… that is not so. Perhaps still not easily… but still potentially forgivable.
Min: His insistence to bear the burden alone will be his downfall if he pursues it.
Min: But if he accepts that things were out of his control and influence—then, perhaps, we can address his sole stain… the ordered interference of the White House security.
Min: For I know in almost certainty that he was not behind the incident at the unapproved military base… and unless I am mistaken, he has little influence over the decisions made by those who are not his sons.
Min: Am I correct in this assessment?
Will: -With some hesitance- I...Y-Yes, that's correct...
Min: Then it is in everyone's best interests to no longer deny that truth, but to own up to it. However, it seems you may be the only person capable of convincing him of this.
Will: ....
Will: (I...)
Will: (Me?)
Will: You want me to convince him... (But...what about...)
Will: ...But what about Tobias?
Will: (The whole reason he's taking it all on himself is because so that Tobias won't suffer...)
Min: -Pinches the left hinge of her glasses, looking over them slightly- Well, Tobias Wily will have to answer for his behavior. We cannot have someone like him running amok on their impulses.
Min: His position is somewhat more forgivable, given that he was never taught how to behave in social situations. That can be fixed.
Will: -Quiet sigh of relief- (Oh, thank God--)
Min: Especially given that the only charge he is fully responsible for would be what happened at the Queen's Finals. He was not, if my conclusions to my research are correct, responsible for the security breach at the base.
Will: No--No, no, of course not--
Will: He was quite...quite still out of it at the time...
[Minerva was quiet at this for a little while.]
Min: That will cause some to question what DID happen, if neither of them were responsible.
Min: I think I know who did it, but there's only circumstantial evidence.
Will: (...Gh....)
Will: C-Circumstantial--?
Min: Just the knowledge of one with both means and motive to pull it off.
Min: Although…
Min: I hardly blame you for that… Doctor William Blackwell.
[There is a very harsh wince at the words-- as if he had been struck physically. There was a subtle shake of his hands, which were very quickly stilled as he balled them up into fists.]
Will: ...that's not my name...
Will: My name is White.
Min: "A rose by any other name," my good sir.
Will: My name is William White.
[There was a steely gaze directed at her now--although he didn't meant anything by it, he couldn't help but become irritated. That wasn't his name, not anymore.
Minerva gave a soft smile at this, tilting her head slightly.]
Min: No one else knows… for now.
Min: Why do you think I left Desmond outside?
Will: ...
Will: What do you want?
Min: -Puts a hand to her face- An end to this, with no more casualties than is within our power to prevent.
Will: .... (Not what I meant, but that too...)
Will: . . .
Will: If you claim to know, then you know why I can't just delete the virus.
Will: ...I...there is something...delicate in the code that I won't destroy.
Will: Not even if you try to make me.
Will: (...Mngh...I still don't know how I'm going to take care of the virus without hurting Trinity...)
[For a moment, her eyes look sad.]
Min: I said "a rose by any other name," Doctor.
Min: Doctor William White is not a five-times fencing champion, as his best friend Doctor Soichiro Sanda claims him to be, and as Secretary Desmond Donald observed. There is no record of this.
Min: It was rather easy with my resources to discern the time frame and location based on your age and the number of colleges in the country who have that level of fencing programs with suitable teachers. Your teacher remembers you well even after the years have gone by. No teacher ever forgets true talent.
Min: I had not bothered to look further than that, for that was not in my business. I had other things on my mind.
Will: …
Min: What you said just now was unknown to me, though I can infer the truth behind it. And if that is the case…
Min: You must work quickly before someone else finds a way. Literally everyone capable is assigned to the project.
Will: -~- What do you think I've been doing all this time?
Will: -We’re trying-
Will: Aside from repairing my sons and daughters and trying to keep this place intact—
Will: I've devoted nearly every waking moment to trying to solve this—
Will: (But it's so hard, it's like trying to wake someone from a very—very deep sleep...)
Will: -Crosses arms- And quite frankly, all of this federal business has not made it easier. -~-
Min: I imagine not.
[She was quiet for a moment again, as if deep in thought.]
Min: I will leave it up to you to give directions on what the best way for HHS to help you would be. That is your prerogative.
Min: For the time being, we will focus on that. The matter with Dr. Cossack can wait until you've had the chance to speak with him… whenever that might be.
Min: He won't be allowed to move about freely, but no other [color=black]action[/color] will be taken against him.
Will: ...I...I'll try to, as soon as I can...
Min: For now, he is resting in isolation. …Let him rest. He obviously is in need of it. -Soft sigh, tapping her fingers against her face- (I look forward to making this all go away.)
Min: Is there anything else you wish to discuss or want to say? Any insight to depart?
Will: …
Will: -Grips- CherryDyn...
Will: Please tell me you're at least looking into CherryDyn.
Will: I...I think they're behind this. All of it.
Will: >> Why else would they make not one, but TWO public statements blaming both Dr. Blackwell and myself, as well as Dr. Sanda?
Will: (....And now Graham knows.... Knows who I really am.)
Will: . . .
Will: (...Maybe he was right about me being stupid...)
Will: (.....)
Will: (Oh, what the hell, it was worth it, for that ONE good right hook.)
Min: To play the devil's advocate:
Min: "There's no accounting for stupidity."
[She spoke that last word with clear derision and scorn, not bothering to hide it.]
Will: …Hn.
Will: Indeed.
Will: …
Will: >> After all this is over...
Will: What will you do with me?
Min: Hopefully, give you honors for your contributions to solving a national crisis.
Will: ...That's not what I meant.
Will: I'm having a very hard time coming up with any good reason why you'd let the real matter slip by.
Will: You're the President. You know.
[Blackwell...a name that was no doubt infamous beyond any other name in America, and perhaps the world at large. He HAD to know--was it because there was just more pressing matters at hand, or something more?
After all, SHE had that power over him now, not him...]
Will: You KNOW what that name means.
Will: Why?
Min: …
Min: -Seems to be carefully considering her answer again-
Min: …A man is to be judged by his choices, not his name or connections.
Min: It has been your choice to work with Sanda Enterprises—a company that is currently researching to find medical breakthroughs with Xellular science. It has been your choice to raise a family, and raise them well. To befriend those in desperate need—indeed, with such friendship that it incites undying loyalty to you.
Min: Your desperation in one moment of ill-founded judgment is hardly unique, even to the current series of events. Your friend made a similar decision in a fit of despair.
Min: But ill judgement can be forgiven, especially when there are no casualties, and no intent for it to be repeated.
Will: ....
Will: I... -Speechless--
Will: (...she's not going to--lock me up, like Father—?)
Will: ...but I... (I lied...)
Will: (I lied to everyone--)
Will: -...clearly very conflicted about this-
Min: -Gently- I can see that this is difficult for you to understand, even though you begin to believe it. That's alright… you will have the time you need for it.
Min: When this is all over, William White…
Min: We will thank you all for what you have done for us, and the sacrifices that were made.
Min: And after all has been said and done, we will leave you all to live in peace.
Will: ....
Will: (In peace...)
Will: ...-Still quite nervous- (But for how long?)
Will: I...I will make sure to let Mikhail know that too.
Min: I'm sure he would appreciate that. It doesn't sound like he's had a pleasant experience dealing with government officials before… though his cooperation will ultimately prove to be to his benefit.
Min: -Small sigh- Well, that is all I have to say on the matter. We both have work to do now, so unless there is anything more you want to add…
Will: No, I...I think that's all.
Will: I...
Will: ...-Very quietly- ...thank you...
[Minerva gives a soft smile at that. She seems more relaxed than before—the kind of relaxation that comes with confidence.]
Min: You're welcome, Doctor White.
Min: You may go.
[Will nods and stands up--he's still a bit shaky, but otherwise a lot more worn out than before--in a good sense, really. He just had to talk to Mikhail...]
[As he steps out of the door, Des passes him by.]
Des: Oh, here. Your water.
Will: ! Oh--I--I forgot about that. ^^;; Thank you, Secretary.
[He accepts it graciously, and goes on his way. Des gives the man a bit of a quizzical look before turning his attention to Min.]
Des: He seems better. Sorta.
Des: What did you say to him, if I can ask?
Min: -Soft sigh- I let him know that we're not out to get anyone per se, and that we want to help out.
Min: I also advised him to speak to Dr. Cossack about the situation to see if he can't convince him to stop being so stubborn.
Des: Well, if anyone can convince him, it's probably Dr. White...he seems to really care about him.
Des: Hell, the guy was ready to tear my face off when I arrested him. >>;; Him and his kids.
Des: It was really startling, you'd think someone that soft-spoken wouldn't have any sort of temper but...I guess 'never judge a book by it's cover' comes into play here.
Min: Well, every man has his breaking point. You'd be surprised how much of a temper the quieter students can have when pressed. I think for now, though, he won't be as hostile to you. If only because he has more pressing needs to focus on.
Des: Hmm. You're right, as usual.
Des: Alright then...now that that's out of the way...
Des: I think Dr. Sanda's daughter was going to give us details of the accommodations and such. Gotta say, as much as the conditions are right now--they're really good hosts.
Des: << Though Seven won't stop giving me the stink eye.
Min: -Amused grin at this- Well, he has been gracious enough to me, for now. I'll see if I can't speak on your behalf the next time we have a chance for conversation.
[Her smile fades, and she looks thoughtful.]
Min: I should like to see DLN-000, but I know the lab is quite crowded right now. That will have to wait until later.
[She shakes her head.]
Min: Well, we'd best go speak to Ms. Sanda, and then I need to talk with Aviator. The news of us coming here even temporarily will be slightly sensational if we don't handle it properly, and he'd know best which of the local stations can be trusted to handle the story.
Des: ...Right...
Des: >>;; Although I'm not too fond of the idea of Six hogging you and I for an 'exclusive' interview. We probably need to break it gently to him that we have work to do--
[She laughs at this.]
Min: We have plenty of leverage when it comes to that. Plenty of things to do and say later. He'll have a month's worth of stories within a few days—so be on your best behavior.~
Des: -Snorts- Yes, Mrs. Morandi.
Min: Lead the way, then. -Amused- Let's get things moving.

[Breakfast that morning started out as such an exciting and encouraging affair.
The house was full again—full of noise, that is, and commotion.
Pyrogen had been forced to go out early to buy groceries, as Seismic had cleared out everything from both fridges and all the pantries once he was well enough to slightly move. Considering he hadn’t eaten in days, that wasn’t really a surprise.]
[In addition to the sticky glory and sugar that was syrup, there was plenty else to give one reason to bounce off the walls…
…not that the syrup wasn’t enough a reason on it’s own, of course…]
Beck: -IT'S MINE.-
Avi: -BECK COME ON YOU CAN'T JUST HOG THE SYRUP BOTTLE LIKE THAT, BRO-
Beck: -RUNS-
Beck: -SUGAAAAAR-
Avi: WE GOT A RUNNER--
[Cryo suddenly springs forth from her own personal freezer in an effort to stop him--]
Cryo: HAND OVER THE SYRUP BOTTLE BRO--
[...Only to find that Beck had vaulted over her to skid around towards the kitchen exit.]
Cryo: HEY NO FAIR--
Beck: -THE SYRUP IS MINE, NO ONE CAN HAVE IT-
[Avi hovers after him, camera drone floating beside him.]
[MN.6] //: -PING- -WE GOT A RUNNER, FOUR FOOT NINE, BLUE NEBULA SHIRT, WE ARE IN HOT PURSUIT, SUBJECT IS HYPER AND VERY STICKY--
Pyro: AVI, NO FLYING IN THE HOUSE--
Brand: ........
Brand: -It's too early for this--
<DWN-024>: > -Snorts- Is your breakfast always this chaotic, Sensei?
Shadow: -I can hear you all ON AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT FLOOR, how even-
[MN.7] //: I'd say 'you have no idea' but then again....
[MN.5] //: -PRIVATE WHAT IN TARNATION ARE YOU DOING--
[MN.4] //: -Whoops, Beck's on a sugar rush, better stay out of the way-
Dyna: I'M NOT CATCHING HIM, HE'LL RUIN MY CLOTHES--
Pyro: -SIGH-
Pyro: -Just USE YOUR BITS, DYNATRON-
Dyna: -But he'll get those sticky toooooo--
Pyro: They're ALREADY STICKY--
[It was at this point that Will came in with a cup of stronger coffee than usual...]
Will: -Yaaawns-
Will: Mmmn....Good morning.
Pyro: Ah--Good morning, Father.
Avi: -FLIES BY THE DOOR- Morning, Daddo! Sorry, gotta fly-- -ZOOMS OFF, UH, WE LOST HIM, BROS--
Will: ?
Pyro: Beck won't share the syrup bottle.
Will: Ah...
Will: Well, that's expected. He's making up for the energy spent this whole week, though...Sugar isn't quite the answer...
Will: ...Oh well. -Sips-
<DWN-024>: >Good morning, Doctor.
<DWN-024>: >How are you this morning?
Will: ! Ah--Good morning, Shadow.
Will: I'm a little worn down, but--that is what coffee is for, eh? ^^
Will: Soi's getting the lab ready for the day, I believe. I heard that Mikhail and Siam have good news to share.
Pyro: !
<DWN-024>: > …
<DWN-024>: > If that is what I hope it to be… -Vaguely eager, because how do emotions work- We must let them know you are awake, as they will want to share at once.
Will: Oh, of course! Ah, just--let me locate Nine first, there's a bit of a situation, it seems. I'm sure he'll want to hear this too...
<DWN-024>: > -Muffled anticipation-
[After Beck was found hiding in the closet of his room with the syrup bottle--now empty--he agreed to come down to hear what Mikhail and Siam had to say.]
Avi: -Toting him around on his shoulders- Lil' bro acquired! ^^
Beck: -w-
Beck: -Syruuuup-
[By this point, the Cossacks were on the line. They appeared to be having breakfast, themselves.
Digger laughed at the spectacle, giving a slight “fist” pump.]
Digger: Haha!~ How is you say, “brother GET!”? You are lucky is not gingerbread man!
[Skull looked over at Keltso. They seemed to share a private joke, because Keltso snorted into his drink.]
Mikhail: It’s good to see you all like this again. Heaven knows it’s been missed.
[The doctor looked tired, but content. He gave a pleasant smile.]
Mikhail: I do indeed have some excellent news to share. Something that’s been long overdue.
Cryo: OOOOOO~
Avi: -THIS SHOULD BE GOOD-
Beck: -Wipes syrup off of his mouth- So what is it, Dr. Cossack?
Mikhail: Well, you know what my overreaching project has been since before we met one another, da?
Digger: Repairing little brothers? :^DDD
Mikhail: Among others, yes.
Mikhail: I must thank you all for your help along the way. Beck, your molds have proven invaluable.
Beck: (^.^)7
Beck: It's no problem, Doctor!
Mikhail: It’s taken quite a lot of searching, but I do believe we have found a suitable answer. It honestly was hard to believe at first, the specs are quite—
WHACK!
Beck: --???
Avi: --The heck was that?
[Out of nowhere, there was an incredible racket coming from the direction of the windows.
It almost sounded like something was trying to break in.]
Cryo: --Yo, It's coming from the window--
Pyro: ???
[Pyro goes over to look at what is causing all the racket--]
Pyro: What is going on out--
Pyro: !!!!!
[...And IMMEDIATELY unlatches the window lock.]
Avi: Uh...Bro? What are you--
[Something feathered and shrieking dashed into the kitchen. It flew right into the toppings and condiments on the table, knocking over drinks and getting grimy feathers into breakfasts.
This bird had certainly seen better days. It looked like it had flown through a pretty hard-affected area—sooty, muddy, and overall filthy.]
Mikhail: -Stands, utterly confused- Pyro, why—
[The poor thing didn’t even stop a moment to rest, but continued screaming.]
???: SCREE, SCREE!
Pyro: Doctor--
Pyro: That's BARON!
Beck: !!!!
Cryo: -Squints-
Cryo: -...DUDE HE'S RIGHT IT'S CARDINAL'S BIRD FORM--
Mikhail: What?!
[Baron was in hysterics, kicking up his wings as he took alight again, hovering in people’s faces.]
Beck: Baron! Calm down! -ACKPFFT FEATHERS IN MOUTH-
Avi: -DUDE YOU'RE GONNA RUN INTO SOMETHING--
Baron: -SCREE, SCREEEE—- -Flies over in Pyro’s face, SCREEEEE—- DDD8
Pyro: -Nearly has to take a step back, this bird is going crazy--
Pyro: Baron--We can't understand you if you just keep screaming--
[Frustrated, Baron flew over near the stove.
He started letting out bursts of fIRE—]
Baron: “●●● ——— ●●●” !!! SCREEE! “●●● ——— ●●●!” SCREE SCREE—!
Beck: ....
Avi: --Dude--Dude that's definitely Morse--
Pyro: ....
Pyro: SOS...
Beck: !!!
Beck: Is Cards in trouble--?!
Baron: SCREE—! “●●● ——— ●●●! ——● —●—●!!!!!!!!”
Avi: --? DC?
Avi: Uh, bro, you're gonna have to be a little more specific with the letters, man--
Will: --No, wait--
[There was a crash noise on the other side of the line. Digger whirled around to see who it was.]
Digger: … Felix?!
[He runs out of view. Baron flies over and starts pecking desperately at Avi’s camera drone.]
Avi: --HEY NO--
Beck: !!!
Avi: Dude no you're gonna scratch the camera--
[Luckily, Will is already opening another feed to the local news, with Soi coming in to see what was all the ruckus about.]
Soi: Why is everyone screaming louder than--
Soi: --Holy hamburger, is that BARON?!
“Felix, no—you’re unwell, you—!”
[Protests could be heard from the other line. Felix was speaking back in agitated Proxan. Dark, deadly looking plants were starting to curl around the doorframe.]
Beck: -Oh man--
Will: Yes, Soi, do me a favor and PLEASE check the news on TV for me--
Soi: Er--Okay?
Soi: --!!!??
Soi: WILL, WE HAVE A SITUATION--
“Let GO of me—they must stop him—”
Mikhail: What KIND of situation— FELIX! GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF—!
Soi: -PANIC-
Soi: THE WHITE HOUSE IS UNDER ATTACK--
Will: What--?!?
Beck: The White House?!?
Avi: -WAIT--AS IN THE WHITE HOUSE, WHITE HOUSE--
Baron: -SCREEE D.C., D.C.-
Avi: -FINALLY GETS INTO THE FEEDS HIMSELF-
Avi: -Pales-
Avi: Oh man THISISBAD--
Avi: THIS IS VERY BAD--
Avi: GUYS--THEY'RE SAYING THAT AN UNIDENTIFIED BOT IS ON THE PRIMISES AND THE DESCRIPTION MATCHES CARDS--
Beck: Cards is THERE?!?
Mikhail: {WHAT?! NO—!}

Mikhail: {EMERGENCY SHUT DOWN! AUTHORIZATION MC005!}
((AAAAAaaaand everyone goes back Offline))
<RMDC>: > -PING!- ERROR: COMMAND FAILED. DLN-000 SIGNAL NOT FOUND.
Cryo: -FLAILING ARMS- WHY THE GLITCH IS THE PREZ'S HOUSE UNDER ATTACK--
Pyro: --....
Pyro: If Cardinal is in the White House--then--
Will: . . .
Will: N...No...
Will: NonoNO--!
Beck: SHADE--!
Felix: You… you must stop him, before—!
[Mikhail, taken by surprise (as he had forgotten all about the poor Adept in the chaos), turned just in time to prevent Felix from falling over something. Felix clutched at him, clearly in a very weakened state. He hadn’t eaten in a long time—and it showed.]
Beck: !
Beck: FELIX--!
Felix: There…
Felix: There is DEATH on the horizon!
Beck: --!!!
Will: NO--!
Will: (I will not lose another CHILD--!)
Will: CALL!

Beck: -Already in combat form, loading up Xel Stocks-
Beck: You gotta explain FAST, Felix, I don't think we have much time--
Felix: He can’t…
Mikhail: -Helps Felix gently to the floor, turning pale- {Dear God…}
Felix: Couldn’t… he couldn’t outrun him…
Will: -Freezes at that-

“You’re going to have to catch me first, hunting doggie!”

“Catch me if you can!”

Beck: . . .
Beck: -Starts preparing FASTER--
Avi: But--wait--
Beck: No TIME!
Beck: Call, how soon can you get us authorization?!
Mikhail: WE DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THAT!
[He’s run over to the mainframe, working faster than one could think possible. He seemed desperate.]
Mikhail: Aviator White you find out who the security on the lawn is RIGHT NOW AND TELL THEM TO CEASE FIRE, /THIS INSTANT!/
Avi: ON IT--
Mikhail: {And somebody call back the Pentagon, dammit—that’s why we haven’t heard from the secretary, THEY MUST BE TRAPPED INSIDE!}
[PING!]
[CALL] //: Yes, Doctor. Contacting the Pentagon.
Mikhail: {FIND whoever you spoke to, we have got to get eyes in there, his signal is gone but we have to get him out of there, I’m waking up Tobias because WE DON’T HAVE TIME!}
Will: S-Soi-- -It's all moving too fast for him, Shade--
Soi: Will--Go get Beck as close to the House as possible! Can you do that?
Will: --!! Yes, yes--Right away--
Beck: (Shade--Shade, why this, WHY THE WHITE HOUSE, WHY--)
Beck: (Don't you know Cards is--?!)
Beck: Ready--!
Mikhail: {THEN GO, /NOW!/}
——————
[....Some time later…]
Beck: What is TAKING so long?!
White: I'm going as fast as I CAN, Beck, but there are SECURITY measures preventing direct Xel Transfer that I HAVE to get through FIRST--!
Beck: We gotta get to Cards before SHADE does or--!
Beck: (Or...He'll do something WORSE--)
White: Almost....
White: --! GOT IT--
White: Call!
Call: Affirmative, Doctor. Preparing Xel Transfer...
<DLN-008 is now Online.>
Beck: --!
Beck: Toby--!
<DLN-008 has entered Lethal Combat mode.>
Beck: --Uh oh--
[Mikhail is working at a terminal, apparently communicating with Tobias.]
[DR.WHITE to MN.9] //: Mikhail has things covered, Beck--your main focus should be to retrieve Countershade and Cardinal!
<MC005>: >Tobias has his own mission. Focus on your work!
[MN.9] //: --...Yes, Sir.
Beck: (Hang on, guys, I swear--I swear I won't let anything happen to you--!)
[CAPITOL BUILDING, AKA THE WHITE HOUSE, A FEW SECONDS LATER...]
[MISSION DETAILS: MIGHTY NUMBER 8, COUNTERSHADE, APPEARS TO BE LEADING A ROBOT OCCUPATION OF THE CAPITAL BUILDING. SIGHTINGS OF DLN-000, CARDINAL LIGHT, HAVE ALSO BEEN REPORTED.
MISSION OBJECTIVE: LOCATE AND PURGE ALL HARMFUL MALWARE FROM MN.8, LOCATE DLN-000. PREVENT BOTH UNITS FROM ENGAGING.
SUB-OBJECTIVE: MINIMIZE RMDC IMPACT.]
[SYSTEMS READY?]
[GO!]
((Stage music here))
[Beck appears in a flurry of blue Xel building upon itself, his feet meeting luxury red carpet. He seems to have landed in the foyer.]
[CALL] //: Attention. Beck has arrived at the Capitol Building.
[DR.SANDA] //: Y...You don't think Shade would actually...Try to...
[DR.WHITE] //: (A fine question indeed, but we all know the answer to that.) Focus, Soi.
[DR.WHITE] //: Beck, what do you see?
Beck: I see--
[Vrrrrrrr...]
[A red dot appears right in between Beck's eyes--]
Beck: --!
[Beck rolls out of the way JUST in time to avoid sniper fire from out of nowhere, the statue behind him becoming littered with bullet holes.]
[PING!]
[MN.8] //: Well, well, well.
[MN.8] //: If it ain't the infernal Wily child and the Lil' doggie.
[So far, Beck had to go and FIND his ill siblings, and while each case differed from the other--
Not two seconds into this and Shade held NO qualms about shooting him in the head.
...In all honesty, that made Beck just a touch annoyed.]
-PING!-
[MN.9] //: COUNTERSHADE!
[Static fill ted the coms.
Angry static.]
<DLN-008>: >Shut up, Shade.
<DLN-008>: > The only reason I haven’t fried you to a soot speck is because Beck’s my friend and Cardinal would kill me. |[
Beck: ...
Beck: (Whew...)
Beck: (At least I kinda don't have to worry about Toby frying big bro to a crisp--yet...)
[There was a slight noise, and it died down.]
<DLN-008>: > Yes—
Beck: --? (Yes? Yes what--?) Toby, who are you--
[Suddenly, gunfire, off in the distance--]
[CALL] //: Sniper fire detected, but I am unable to detect any robot capable of long range gunfire.
[DR.WHITE] //: No, you won't, Call. Mighty No. 8 won't show up on any of your instruments.
[DR.WHITE.] //: ...All part of my design.
[One of the monitors nearby became filled with static and then a familiar symbol—the Wily symbol.
Tobias’s voice came over a small-range frequency.]
“Cardinal is fighting his way through—I can hear him, but I can’t see him yet! I’ll do what I can to disrupt!”
Beck: !
Beck: Thanks, Toby!
“Don’t congratulate me yet, Beck—”
((Whatever noise you want here))
“I CAN’T CONTROL THE SECURITY SYSTEMS!”
[As if to prove this point, the monitor cut out, and resumed a “RED ALERT” security message.]
Beck: ._____.
[REXELECTION: SEISMIC.]
((pic))
Beck: -TANK MODE GO-
[Various turrets unlock from the ceiling and walls, but they couldn't keep up with Beck as he barreled down the next hallway, gunfire chasing after him.]
[He practically ran over various infected robots, not stopping for a second in his search for Countershade and Cardinal.]
Beck: (Where are you, Shade--?)
[DR.WHITE] //: Beck, Shade has to be somewhere in the building--trace the sniper fire back to its source!
[Indeed, Beck saw many red lasers bouncing off the walls and familiar dark orbs in the hall--Beck only saw them in use once in his entire life, and that was way back when he was still on the team...]
Beck: (Shade can see through them, I know that much--and he can use them to bounce his shots off of...)
Beck: (Meaning he has eyes everywhere--he knows exactly what's going on inside at all times--)
Beck: (I gotta get past them somehow--!)
[REXELECTION: BRANDISH.]
Beck: HAH!
[Beck leaps forward and slices one out of the air, both halves of the orb falling into carpet with a small thunk.]
Beck: Okay, so some of them can be smashed... (Or sliced, in this case...)
[CRUNCH--!]
Beck: --? -Looks down, what the heck did he step on--
Snake: -Beep.-
[...Gosh, that looked familiar--]
Snake: -Beep beep.-
Beck: --!!!
[His mind goes RACING back to that day when a Search Snake had snuck into the Meadow--!]
Beck: NO--!
[Beck KICKS IT AWAY--]
[BLAM BLAM BLAM--]
[The snake EXPLODED in the air, sending shrapnel and acid flying--some of it into the gathered orbs, themselves!!]
[There was suddenly distorted CURSING over the feeds as Beck breathed hard, his eyes wide and shaking, and...almost...]
[Glowing...]
Beck: WHAT IS A S E A R C H SNAKE DOING HERE IN THE WHITE HOUSE--?!?
[...Uh oh.]
<DLN-008>: > Because Cardinal is trying to find them, genius!
Beck: --!
Beck: .........
Beck: ....O...Oh...
[That seems to snap him out of it.]
Beck: S-...Sorry, I...
<DLN-008>: > HE TOOK ALL THE CAPSULES, REMEMBER?!
Beck: -Wince--
Beck: (Gnh, that's right--)
<DLN-008>: > Including MINE!
[BZZZRRRRRKKKZZZZZGGGHHHHHHHVVVV—]
Beck: --?!?
<MC005>: > No! They're... they must be already engaging!
Beck: No--!
Beck: (Cards--Shade is WEAK to DYNA'S abilities, you're going to--!)
[Beck swerved around a corner, heading to the place where he heard the electricity--]
Beck: (Ugh, this is like the Power Plant all over again--)
<DLN-008>: > DYNAAAAAA--
<DLN-008>: > I CAN'T FIGHT THE SYSTEM AND FOCUS ON OTHER THINGS AT THE SAME TIME, HELP--
[He did seem to be disrupting the security systems-- it was far from perfect, though, and it was clear he was struggling.]
[PING!]
[MN.3] //: I got thiszz, Toby!
[MN.3] //: Let'szzz zzsee, what can I do here....
[Dyna is silent for a few moments before--]
[PING!]
[MN.3] //: Ah! That'szz the biszznesszz--thiszz place MUST have it'szz own power grid! No wonder you're having zzso much trouble, Toby, the zzspecszz are totally different.
[MN.3] //: Hmmm...Let'szzz try thiszz--
Beck: Whoa--!
[Suddenly, gravity just vanished as EVERYTHING began to float up, suspended, the air crackling with energy--]
Beck: Dynaaaaa, put me down--!
[MN.3] //: Oopszz--
[MN.3] //: Okay, hmm. That waszzn't it--
[THUNK.]
[Aaaand gravity went back to normal.]
Beck: -Ow-
[MN.3] //: Wow, thiszzz iszzn't your typical power grid--I'm gonna need a few zzsecondszz. Can you hold off for a while longer?
Beck: -Back in default form- Yeah, I think...
Beck: --!
Beck: What the...
[He had arrived at the hallway where he heard the electric based weaponry going off.
It was utterly destroyed.]
Beck: Uh.
Beck: I think this is the right way. (Jeez...)
Beck: (Gotta watch my step...)
Beck: CARDS?! SHADE?!
Beck: WHERE ARE YOU?!
Beck: SOMEONE--
[BANG!]
Beck: --Gnh!
[Something hot grazed his shoulder, and he turned--]
Shade: Hello, runt.
Beck: --?!
[Before Beck could say a word, Shade fired off more shots, forcing Beck to find cover behind a presidential statue of sorts.]
Shade: Heh. Coward.
Beck: Shade, please, I--!
[Beck peeked out of his cover to return fire--]
Beck: --???
[...But he was gone.]
Beck: Sh...Shade--?
[Nothing.]
[CALL] //: Mighty No. 8's signal has vanished. We have lost the target. My apologies.
[DR.WHITE] //: .... -sigh-
[DR.WHITE] //: ... It's not your fault.
[DR.WHITE] //: ...It's what I built him to do.
<MC005>: > And Cardinal was built to defend at all costs-- Tobias, where is he?!
<DLN-008>: > Kinds busy with the security--!
Beck: Gah...
[Finding nothing here, Beck doubled back to the foyer, and to the other adjoining hallway to the right. Perhaps, if they were going left, he can cut them off--]
Beck: --!
[A slew of infected combat models awaited him.]
Beck: Aw, you gotta be--!
[They opened fire, and this time there wasn't much cover to hide behind--Beck was forced to tank some hits before retaliating with his default weapon, restoring his Xel Stocks for later.]
Beck: Guuuh, lasers hurt...
[He shakes it off after a while, and continues to run down the hall...]
[BANG BANG BANG!!]
[--only to be CHASED by sniper fire soon after!]
Beck: AH--!
[MN.8] //: Heh. Run along nao, lil' doggy.
[MN.8] //: -VERY DISORTED VOICE-- Run and FETCH for your HUMAN masters.
<DLN-008>: > OW!
<DLN-008>: > -Incredibly aggressive data-
[Tobias seemed to be engaged in a fight against something very powerful…
…something that was making him angry.]
[KKKSST--]
[The connection cuts out.]
[DR.WHITE] //: He STILL has his sights on you, Beck--be careful--!
Beck: Ggh, trying--!
[He manages to dive into the next hallway--]
Beck: --?????
[...Oh that was a lot of Metal Blades.]
Beck: (Oooh, jeez, Shade's not gonna be happy seeing those out--)
Beck: (Not after what happened in the Queen's Finals...)
Beck: (Oh, please, PLEASE don't do anything rash, Shade--you--you gotta still be in there SOMEWHERE--!)
"RARF!"
Beck: --?????
Beck: ...Did...Did you hear that?
[It...It sounded like a very distinct bark--]
<MC005>: > …I must be imagining things, that sounded like Shade’s dog—
"RARF RARF!"
Beck: --!!!!
Beck: No WAY--
[Amazingly, despite all of the gunfire and chaos, madness, and overall hell on earth--
Scout the Zigzagoon was expertly and happily bouncing around the dangers of the White House, tail wagging with GLEE as he POUNCED into the young hero's chest with almost carefree cheerfulness.]
Scout: RARF! : D!!!! -IT'S YOU, TALL MASTER'S BROTHERRRR-
Beck: SCOUT--?!?
Scout: -ALL THE KISSES FOR YOU--
Beck: -GIGGLES, BWAAAA--
[DR.WHITE] //: .....I....? -Speechless-
<MC005>: > …
<MC005>: > …How did he—
<MC005>: > !
<MC005>: > What is he wearing?
Beck: --?
[Scout had something hanging around his neck, besides his teal scarf...]
Beck: Lemmie see that...
Beck: --?
Beck: It's...One of those old USB drives--?
<MC005>: > !!!
<MC005>: > That’s Cardinal’s!
Beck: --......
Beck: Wait--if this is Cardinal's--
Beck: Scout--did...Did you--did you come here WITH CARDS--?!?
Scout: Rarf! : D
Beck: -ARE YOU TELLING ME SHADE'S RACCOON FOUND CARDS, CARDS, BEFORE WE DID--
[You could hear Mikhail facepalming over the feeds.
....And again, over Will's feed.]
[DR.WHITE] //: -We got outsmarted by a raccoon, are you KIDDING me--
Beck: --! Scout--where is he--where is Cards--?!
Scout: ---......
[...He's...Not answering.]
<DLN-008>: > Gnhhhgghhh!
<DLN-008>: > I directed him to the Oval Office!
Beck: --?!? WHAT--?!
[DR.SANDA] //: -I KNEW IT, HE'S GOING TO ASSASSINATE THE MADAME PRESIDENT--
[DR.SANDA] //: BECK! HURRY!
Beck: (Gnh--!)
Beck: Scout--
Beck: I can't bring you back home, but, please--
Beck: If you find Cards--please tell him I'm going to save Shade!
[Beck didn't want to leave Scout in such a dangerous place, but--if he made it this far, then he should be fine...]
Scout: Rarf--
[Beck didn't wait for an complete answer--he ran ahead, leaving the Zig behind.]
Scout: -Whiiiines-
[After a moment of worry, the Zig soon bounces off, determined to find his master--either of them.]
[Meanwhile, Beck continued to forge his way through the capital building turned battleground, avoiding both Shade's sniper fire AND that of the infected robots.]
Beck: --....
[Despite all the noise, and chaos...]
[...He hasn't seen a single human in the building yet, and he didn't know if that was a good or bad sign.]
[PING!]
[Fortunately, that question was about to be answered.]
[MN.8] //: Wondering what happened to all the humans here, Lil' doggy?
[MN.8] //: They ran away, thanks t' that annoyin' songbird of theirs...Feh. Cowards.
[MN.8] //: Every single one of those meat-sticks fled at the first sign of trouble. Pathetic.
[MN.8] //: ...'Cept for the stupid ones, that is. Heh.
[MN.8] //: Like y o u.
[MN.9] //: -Ghn--
[MN.9] //: Shade, PLEASE--!
[MN.9] //: That 'songbird'--you KNOW that person, Shade--!
[MN.9] //: Please don't hurt him!
[MN.8] //: Ya think I'm gonna listen t' YEW, lil' Doggy?
[MN.8] //: Ah' ain't no TOOL fer MAN no more. Not like the REST of ya.
[MN.8] //: Ah' think it's about time someone ELSE had a turn at orderin' fools around, eh?
[KKKSST--!]
Beck: SHADE--UGH--!
Beck: (Either he's ignoring me or he doesn't even RECOGNIZE Cards--like Pyro...)
Beck: DYNA!
[MN.3] //: Almoszzt got it--
[The lights flickered...]
[And dimmed.]
Beck: --!
[...Aaaand everything started floating again, oh no--]

[MN.9] //: Hookay, thanks, Dyna! c:
<DLN-008>: >Just follow the panels along the side—
[Some of them start lighting up, flickering down the hallway.]
[Unfortunately, Beck didn’t really quite make it too far before—]
POW.
[Someone had managed to blow a fuse, which turned off the security in that part of the White House…
…and the lights…
…and the air conditioning.]
<DLN-008>: > OW!
<DLN-008>: > -OUCH that hurt, WARN a guy before you shove him into a current like that—-

<MC005>: >He must have used Thunder Beam…
((Pic of Tobias in ANGRY RAEG MODE here))
<MC005>: > It’s the only thing he had powerful enough to do that.
<MC005>: >I think that’s the last of the electric power he had at his disposal—he won’t have any left for fighting with…
Beck: (He's...Either getting more serious or desperate...)
Beck: (I gotta hurry, gotta--!)
<MC005>: >Tobias, are you alright?
<DLN-008>: > Nnnngghhhh…
[MN.3] //:

Beck: --!!
[REXELECTION: BRANDISH.]
[A red blur speeds down the hallway at a frantic pace, but he's still slowed down by all the infected enemies around--it was like they were trying to stall him--]
Beck: Out of my WAY--
[SHING SHING--!]
[Then...]
[MN.8] //: Heh.
[MN.8] //: Was that ya soundin’ desperate there?
[MN.9] //: SHADE--!

[The comms seemed to go live—as if Shade were broadcasting his twisted takeover—!]
[For a brief moment, silence.
…But then…]
“…Heh…”
Beck: --!
[Laughter.
FAMILIAR laughter—but it wasn’t Shade’s—!]
Beck: --!
Beck: Cardinal--!
“Shade, Shade, Shade…”

[One could hear a faint priming whine…!]
“Guess I’ll have to make my own!”
[K-FLSH!]

“! Oh goodness— Now wait just a—”
[Beck turned the corner—]

“Hello again, Avs.”
[MN.6] //: Cards--Cards, man, I missed you-- come ON I NEED AUDIO OUTPUT--!

<DLN-008>: >Okay, try now—!
[KSSSSSST--!]
[MN.6] //: TOBY YOU'RE A LIFESAVER--
Avi: Bro you do realize can't hide from this, right--
“Sadly."
[He sounded weary and grim.]
“That’s a cost I’ll have to carry.”
<DLN-008>: > …
<DLN-008>: > -Ugh, I… suddenly don’t feel so good…-
Avi: OKAY GOOD JUST CHECKING.
Avi: Because sometimes you just kinda let these things fly wAY OVER YOUR HEAD--

[Silence, other than the background chatter.]
<MC005>: > Just a little more…

“-Quietly- I’m sorry, Avi. I’m not done yet.”
Avi: --....
[MN.6] //: -Ugh we--Cards, we NEED you too--
Avi: Dude, Beck's in there now, just--come on, man, can't ya believe in him too...?
Beck: (Please, Cards--you KNOW I'm the only one that can CURE him, PLEASE, I can DO THIS--!)
“Six, this is about a lot more than believing and proving and anything else, and quite frankly—”
[A splashing noise.]
[MN.6] //: --? Was that water--
“—I’m tired of seeing my brothers die.”

Beck: Why don't you b-believe me--
<MC005>: > NO!

<MC005>: > With the White House evacuated…
<MC005>: > The Pentagon would be able to target it!
Beck: --!
[DR.WHITE] //: Listen to Mikhail, Beck!
[DR.WHITE] //: Cardinal--he has his own personal reasons for going after Shade, you know this--!
[DR.WHITE] //: It's not that he doesn't believe in you, Beck, please...
Beck: . . .
[A lady’s voice breaks through.]
“Where do you THINK you’re going—”
[MN.6] //: -UH OH--
“Here, take this, it may help you on your journey—”
[MN.6] //: .......
Avi: (....I guess I tried.)

Mikhail: … -Facepalm- (He handed off the Pokémon to the President??)
[MN.6] //: Sorry, Doc, I'm...not a good staller. That's...More Shade's department...
Avi: please don't hurt him too bad.
“I don’t have time for this. You saw the file extension, you know my intentions.”
Beck: --......
[At the sound of Cardinal reminding him of this, The Xel fluxes, and then gently collects towards Beck, healing him.]

Beck: --I...yeah.
Beck: I'm going.
Beck: (Shade...Cards...)

Beck: --....
Beck: Oh no--
<MC005>: >Beck…? What is it?
Beck: (No, Shade, no--)

[REXELECTION: BRANDISH.]
Beck: HAAAAAAH!
[Beck slices and dices anything that crosses his path in a red and yellow tornado of slashes that seem too quick for the normal eye to see...]
[SHING SHING SHING--]
[BANG.]
[A pause.]
[BANG!]
[A much longer pause. Beck was beginning to make headway.]
[BANG—]
[Shorter pause—]
“AUGH!”
Beck: CARDS--!
Beck: (He's already hurt, come on, COME ON--)
[BLAM! BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM—]
Beck: --!
[Wait, wasn't that...]
Beck: (Needle Cannon--)
Beck: Cards, please--just hold out a LITTLE longer--
[A set of large oak doors block the path--locked shut.]
[REXELECTION: SEISMIC]
[CRASH--]
[...Or, was.]
[BANG BANG BANG–]
[Silence.]
Beck: (No, please, STOP DOING THAT--)
[This time, the silence WASN’T broken.]
Beck: ......
Beck: (N...No, no, NO--)
Beck: (Oh, Cards, please, say something, a comeback, a pun, ANYTHING--!)
Beck: (YOU--YOU CAN'T BE--)
Beck: AVIIIIIIII!
[PING!]
[MN.6 IS NOW ONLINE.]
[MN.6] //: -LITTLE BRO IS SCREAMING--
[MN.9] //: Avi, I need eyes in the main foyer, NOW!
[MN.6] //: What, why--
[MN.9] //: I NEED TO KNOW IF THEY'RE STILL ALIVE--!
[MN.6] //: --!!!!
[MN.6] //: -Foyer, Shade, Cards, CRUD--
[MN.6] //: --! I GOT VISUAL--
[MN.6] //: -Oh man things are NOT looking good for Cards right now--
[MN.9] //: But he's still--!?
[MN.6] //: Yeah, they...They're talking, I think...I think Cards is getting through to him--!
Beck: -Stops in his tracks-
Beck: (Then maybe--)
Beck: (Maybe...Maybe Shade is...)
Beck: (If Cards can just keep him still--maybe we can do a repeat of the highway like Carmen, or--)
Beck: -RUNS-
Beck: (If I can just get there, I won't have to fight Shade at all, or at least not alone--!)
Beck: (I just have to---)
BANG—
[MN.6] //: -DATA SCREEEEECH--
[MN.6 HAS GONE INTO SLEEP MODE]
[A thud can be heard over the comms--]
[MN.3] //: AVI--!
[Beck staggered and stopped dead at the sudden screech of horror from his own brother, his eyes widening as he came to the realization that--]
Beck: (Avi...Avi faints when he sees blood or something LIKE it--!)
—————————
[Blade suddenly had a saw in his hand, and raised it so he could slash wildly at the DLN–!]
[Oil and cooling fluids spattered all over Bladeblaster’s hands and weapon, as if they were blood.
Tobias lost his grip immediately and fell to the ground, too dazed in pain and injury to even cry out.
His energy levels had dropped DRAMATICALLY, and were still dropping, as was his core temperature—two more hits like that, and he would be gone.]
—————————
Beck: CARDINAAAAAAL!
[Shaking off his temporary stupor, Beck redoubled his efforts, smashing, crashing, and going through all the debris and such that have collected during Cardinal's run of the place...]
Beck: (Don't be dead don't be dead don't be--)
[He trips--]
Beck: (UGH--!)
[And lands on a pile of granite rubble, skidding around the floor and falling again over the small pebbles, picking himself up, and just running for it.]
[...He didn't think he'd ever been so desperate just to get to one place in all his days Online.]
[And the silence… The SILENCE just keeps GOING—]
“ARUGH–!”
[Or not.]
Beck: (--?!? That--...That was Shade--)
Beck: SHADE!
Beck: (Gotta get there, gotta get there before--!)
[--!!]
[At last! The hallway leading towards the foyer, with one locked double door standing in the way!]
[At this point, Beck could barely make out SOME voices...]
Beck: ---!!!
[WHAM!]
[Beck slams himself against the door, but it wouldn't budge--]
Beck: SHAAAAADE! OPEN THE DOOR!
Beck: OPEN THE DOOR N O W--!
"ENOUGH!"
[Shade--]
[REXELECTION: SEISMIC--]
"Ah' don’t have time t’ waste on you. Obviously ya ain’t gonna stay out of my way while ya still runnin’."
[WHAM--]
"An’ as we’ve already established, ya have this fraggin’ annoyin’ tendency to keep hangin’ on. Fahn, then—I’ll give ya the honor a’ takin’ ya out myself!"
Beck: Shade, NO!
"An’ just tah make SURE you don’t get out of sight at the last second…"
Beck: HE'S YOUR BEST FRIEND--!
[WHAM--CRACK--]
"This’ll be the last bullet Ah’ waste on ya."
Beck: DON'T KILL HIM--!!

[June 28th opens with a press release from Sanda Enterprises.
Several releases, actually.
While most of the two families had gathered in the large living room to watch the TV coverage, there were a few notable exceptions.
Tobias was still Offline, of course—and as such, Snow was still waiting on the other side of the barrier, watching and praying his brother would wake up.
Shadow was still attending the repair bay, where Brandish (and Jack and Carmen as well, for that matter) were still recovering. Dr. Cossack was in the lab, but working on his own personal project.
Siam, to no one’s surprise, remained shut up in the Rebel Angels’ personal lab, which was elsewhere.
Battalion and Seismic were still being sought; Call was sorting through the data by herself at the moment, since Dr. White was working on the virus and both Avis and the Sanda twins were busy with the news coverage.
As for Beck?
He’d asked Jaden to talk with him outside—and after the conversation started focusing on his immunities to certain weapons, Jaden began to get a bit suspicious…]
Jaden: Uh, Beck? .-. Do you, uh… need my form for something?
[Beck paused for a moment, considering what he knew about what had happened to Bladeblaster. If he was right…]
Beck: yes please
Jaden: Well, um. Okay…
[He sits down somewhat awkwardly, due to his size.]
Jaden: You’ve… never really used one of our Power Capsules before, have you?
Beck: ...Mmm...Nope. The closest thing I've seen is the replica you guys gave us.
Jaden: Okay. Well, to put it in your terms… that’s the hardware that holds our Weapon Data. The data is only compatible with specific hardware. Since you’re set up to be adaptable, I think your system will automatically shift to match that, if it can read the data. What with how you work, you’ll probably end up being more like me than say, Cardinal. That’s my theory, of if we try going about this straightforward.
[He holds his left arm at an angle and concentrates. After a moment, an access panel becomes visible, and it opens.
There’s an active Power Capsule inside. It looks kind of like…]
((Pizzazium Infinianite!))
[It has orange light in the coils but overall gives off a white glow, somehow.]
Beck: ...That?
Jaden: …I don’t have hands, so, y-you’re… gonna have to rem-move it yourself. Gently, please.
Beck: Oh, um--uh...
Beck: Are there any--like, screws or...? -We don't wanna hurt you so how do we take it out?-
Jaden: N-no, uh. It’s like a… an old school battery. It just latches into place. Lift the latches and you’ll be fine. I’m in my repair settings, so they aren’t locked down.
Beck: A battery--OK, got it...
Beck: -If I'm doing something wrong you can stop me OK?-
[There was a slight hesitant pause before Beck gently grabbed hold of the Capsule, and lifted the latches as he was told to.]
Beck: --!
[Click.]
[The glow faded somewhat as it was easily removed. Jaden looked a little relieved, though.]
[Beck started blinking rapidly as he held the now free Capsule in his hands...]
[NON-XEL WEAPON DATA DETECTED.]
[BEGINNING ANALYSIS.]
[ACCESSING XEL STOCK 1.]
Beck: --????
Jaden: -Just watching, though gets puzzled at Beck’s sudden, unexplained surprise-
[A flurry of loose Xel appears in Beck's hands--]
Beck: -UH--
[...and starts to cover the Capsule?]
Jaden: -Okay, this is new- ?__?
Beck: -I'M NOT DOING THIS I SWEAR--at least I think so--
Jaden: Easy, easy—just relax, not everything that any living creature does is conscious effort, you know. It’s okay.
[ANALYZING DATA...]
Beck: ....?
[His eyes glow green as his systems receive the data from the Capsule, and his uneasiness suddenly gives way to curiosity.]
Beck: I--oh. Huh.
Beck: -.. OH OK I THINK I KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON--SORTA-
Jaden: ?
Beck: I... think my systems are trying to read the data from the capsule first--it recognized them as not Xel-data right away, so I...guess it's using one of my Xel Stocks to analyze it?
Jaden: That makes sense. Those things are usually part of the system when being used, anyway.
Beck: -...We're kinda getting a garbled mess right now, though-
Beck: -Like--it makes some sense but not really-
Beck: ...This needs some serious data sifting, I think...
Beck: -Maybe sending this assimilation data to Dad or Call can help clean it up and read it better?-
Jaden: Well, your Dad might ask why you were poking around with the power capsules, so.
[He sighed.]
Jaden: Man, I wish Toby were Online. I’m sure he could translate if he worked at it hard enough. What with the side effects of the fusion and all. But he won’t get Online, even if we keep him isolated, until we’re sure he won’t… well.
Beck: ....Yeah.
Beck: . . .
[ANALYSIS COMPLETE.]
[The Xel around the capsule slowly, but surely, turned into a bright orange color...]
Beck: --Oooooo...
Jaden: -Brightens up a bit at that-
[It then returned to Beck via his assimilation ability.]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
Beck: --Whoa--
[ERROR: NON-XEL DATA CANNOT BE READ. FORM UNAVAILABLE.]
Beck: --...Aw...
Beck: ...Well, I kinda expected something like that...
Jaden: Mmm.
Jaden: Man, if we could just bring Toby Online…
Jaden: I’m sure Siam could make some progress at it, but he’s busy with something else right now. Dr. Cossack seems to be working on some sort of analysis… he’s been very serious about it. And of course, Dr. White is working on his own analysis… -Sigh-
Beck: Oh...yeah, Dad's working on analysing the virus...and Sanda's busy with his twin.
Jaden: I get the feeling this would be easier if Cardinal were here, but of course he’s gone. >__>
Beck: ......
Beck: (I...I kinda wish he was here too. I really could use some of his advice...)
Jaden: If you think it would help, you can keep the Power Capsule to study it when you’re not on missions. You built a magic mirror out of Xel, I’m sure you’ll come up with something. | )
Beck: ...!
Beck: Oh--no, I...
Beck: -...Don't you need this, though--?-
Jaden: To do what, exactly? We’re in enforced lockdown mode, especially after what happened. I can’t leave the Meadow even if I wanted to. And I know better than that. Until something changes, there’s not much any of us can do…
Beck: ...Oh...right...
Beck: ....
[Jaden seems to be distracted, his gaze distant.]
Beck: ......
Beck: Jaden?
Beck: -...is something wrong?-
Jaden: Hmm? Oh, I’m just reading through the news reports that were put out.
[He smiles a little.]
Jaden: Mr. Sanda was very succinct in talking about the virus and the effects that it has, and describing the analysis process that’s going on. He mentioned how and why not everyone got infected—so that should allow for those that aren’t to be able to move about without being attacked all in a panic. The symptoms were listed and all that.
Jaden: The Related Links talked about several instances, like Jack’s adventure, where non-infected Xelbots were doing good.
Jaden: Both of those link to the one about what you’ve been up to and how you and Dr. White are going to use the data to figure out how to stop this.
[His smile falters a little, becoming sloppy, and leaving his eyes entirely.]
Jaden: …It mentions that [color=brick]anyone[/color] with information should contact the company but not engage. Colors and all… (That… that isn’t going to necessarily work.)
[He pauses.]
Jaden: It looks like there are some bloggers commenting on all this, but… that’s more data than I can sort through. Avi promised to help with crowd control if it does come up…
Jaden: (Though he DID say that he kept Toby and Shadow out of the submitted footage…)
Beck: Mmm...
Beck: ......
[Jaden seems somewhat troubled.]
Jaden: …I do wish he were awake. If he…
Jaden: If he were in the right frame of mind, I’m sure he could help analyze data, whether that be social data, coding data, or just plain finding our brother.
[Then he perks up a bit in a grin.]
Jaden: Until then… c’mon, let’s go to the living room. Everyone’s watching the Beck Show~
Beck: Eheh....
Beck: -We're just gonna--yeah follow/hide behind Jaden--
[Many of the repaired Mighty Numbers (and some of the Angels) are there watching the footage. Siam, Snow, Tobias, and Cardinal were all gone, of course—and Shadow, Brand, Carmen, Jack, Plume, and Landcrusher were still in recovery. There were cheers when Beck entered.]
Goose: -SCOOPS UP OTHER!BRO- SUPERBECK TO THE RESCUE, BA BA BAAAA!
Cryo: -BRO YOU'RE ON TV--
Beck: Whoaa--!!
Pyro: -The bIGGEST BIG BROTHER SMILE ON HIS FACE-
Dyna: -BZZZZZZZ, LOOK AT OUR BECKY~~~-
Kalinka: Hero, herooo~
Digger: Yes good~ : DDD
Avi: -HEH, DID ANYONE EXPECT ANYTHING LESS THOUGH--
Beck: ^///^;;
[Aw, look, he's turning red--]
Beck: I, uh--heh...um...
[...and at a loss for words, it looks like.]
Pisces: If 000 were here, he’d be playing that one song from Hercules. -Gives Beck a thumbs up-
Speedy: Well, he’s just missing out. His own fault. |V
Goose: Nah, bro, he’ll hear this. ;D We made sure of that, didn’t we, Avi? ^.^
Avi: Eeeexactamundo, Avi! ^.^
Beck: ...?
Jaden: I still don’t think you should expect much results.
Goose: Bro, you gotta learn to be more optimistic!
Jaden: No, I mean—gah, never mind, we’ll probably discuss it at a family meeting or something later.
Nico: …? Beck?
[He’s looking right at him, and not at the TV or any of the others. After a moment, ALL the DWNs and DCNs do the same.]
Nico: .__.; Beck?
Nico: Why exactly are you holding Jaden’s Power Capsule…?
Beck: ....?
Beck: ...! Oh--!
[...Whoops. He forgot to put that away.]
Beck: Jaden let me borrow it.
Nico: -Looks over-
Jaden: -Ping of confirmation, calm-
Nico: -Oh, okay then- -RELIEF-
Pyro: ...So that's what it really looks like...
Cryo: -oooooo, coooool-
Beck: Yeah, I tried to assimilate it's weapon data--
Nico: —?!
Dyna: -Wait you did what--
Beck: -KEY WORD 'TRIED'-
Beck: ...But all I got was unreadable data. So no Jaden form yet...
[Nico scowls at his brother for a moment, and pulls him aside. The two make soft pings and eye glows every so often as they become engaged in a private conversation…]
Goose: -Sets Becky down- Cool. Looks like a neon light or something. :V
Speedy: -Reachy reachy for favorite bro’s hardware- Yyyyeah, nobody try eating it or I’ll sock them to the face. >.>
Pisces: -Lazily grabs Speedy’s wrist before he invades Beck’s personal space-
Pyro: Hmm...
Beck: I didn't try to eat it--!
Beck: ...I did have to--well, my systems used a Xel Stock to analyze it.
Pyro: ...Your systems? You mean it was automatic?
Beck: Yeah--kinda freaked me out a bit at first, eheh... ^^;;
Speedy: -Then obviously I wasn’t talking to YOU, was I-
Beck: Uh...
Dyna: | T -We THOUGHT it was a power storage thing, let it go, jeezzz-
Beck: A-Anyway...I think the data has to be organized and sifted through before I can use it...
[…Man, Nico and Jaden are starting to bare their teeth at each other. Clearly Nico isn’t too happy about this development, for some reason.]
Beck: ....?
Pyro: ...What's going on over there? | [ -Uh oh, big bro mode on-
Avi: -UM--HEY BRO LOOK I’M FLYING IN THE HOUSE-
Pyro: --! Avi--NO FLYING IN THE HOUSE--
[Nico throws his hand outward.]
WHANG.
[…Avi is now stuck to the ceiling.]
Jaden: !
[Aaaaand the other one.]
WHANG.
[Jaden is stuck to the wall.]
Pisces: …bro, that was harsh.
Beck: --!
Avi:
-OW--that kinda smarts...-
Nico: Enough.
[He lets them both drop to the floor, hovering and shifting to his armor, sans helmet.]
Avi: -FACEPLANT-
-Muffled ouch noises-
Beck: . . . . .
Nico: Jaden, you shouldn’t have done that without asking first.
Nico: Nobody else in this family better try that without approval from myself, Siam, AND Doctor Cossack, got it?
Speedy: Whaaaaaaatever you say, bro.
Beck: . . .
Beck: I...
Beck: . . .
[...Uh oh.]
Nico: Beck, do not toy around with Power Capsules, okay?
Nico: They /don’t/ act the same way for secondary users as they do for their primary users. The differences are entirely unpredictable until you’re actually out using them in battle.
Goose: Wait, wat .-.
Beck: .....
Beck: Oh...
[...He didn't know that...]
Pyro: ...How so?
Nico: -Turns to face Pyro- They aren’t fully functional when used with hardware that doesn’t match the specs they were designed for. For example. There’s one defense-related one? When our brother had used it, it defended him from everything. But if Cardinal or the Menace used it? Only from close-range physical attacks.
Nico: Not knowing what you’re dealing with there is a deadly mistake to make in situations like this. Don’t do it. -Plus, we do not approve in general-
Goose: Bro, then why did Robin take all your stash?
Nico: Because he knows how they work.
Pyro: Hmm...you do have a point. I suppose it's lucky that Nine can't read the data.
Beck: .....
Nico: -Warning glare at Beck, eyes flashing with a glow for a moment-
Beck: --!
[--He backs away, and there is a slight fearful look in his eyes--]
Avi: --Hey, bro, don't do that, you're--
[...He did something--something wrong, didn't he?]
[He messed up again--]
<DWN-018 to MNN-009>: > -I WILL protect this family… even if it involves protecting from YOU!-
Beck: -SUDDEN ERRATIC DATA-
[Suddenly, Kalinka yelled.]
Kalinka: {LOOK!}
[She was pointing at the television. For some reason, the broadcast seems to have been pre-empted.]
Pyro: --??
Kalinka: {Aviator, I thought you said it was going to play all day!} D:
Avi: --? What...? But...!
[Nico and everyone else look over, also puzzled. Speedy turns up the volume.]
Beck: --.....?
[The new development seems to have snapped Beck out of his panic, and he quietly moved behind Pyrogen.]
Avi: -The heck is going on, I thought for SURE it would be a continuous broadcast--
Avi: ....Unless...
Skull: ???
Goose: Unless someone paid a lOT of money to say something else--
Avi: --But someone with that kinda cash--
Avi: ....
Avi: -AW NO-
Avi: -PLEASE LET IT BE THE PRESIDENT OR SOMETHING--
Speedy: The President? oh geez, I swear if the Feds show; I'm gonna bolt--
Beck: --!!!
Keltso: {What?!}
Goose: AW COME ON MAN, ARE YOU FOR REAL—
Avi: YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME--!
Pyro: --Father--! -and now we're running to get Dad--
Dyna: -BZZZZZZZZZZ WITH A N G E R-
Cryo: THAT'S IT LEMMIE AT HIM--
Beck: ......
Beck: -Confused as all heck- (I...Graham's blaming Dad now?)
Beck: (But why?)
[The Angels were just shocked into silence. Nico in particular seems to have taken it rather hard.]
Nico: ...
<DWN-018 has entered Defensive Combat mode.>
[The others quickly follow suit, with Skull taking Kalinka and warping off without another word. His older brother looks TICKED, though!
Nico hovers off to go get Siam. Meanwhile, Speedy is calling Dr. Cossack to check on Tobias.
There is a ping.]
<DWN-024>: > -HELP, LADY EIGHT IS AWAKE AND GETTING VERY ANGRY-- -
[MN.7] //: -Carmen, please calm d--
<FMN-008>: > -SCREE, SCREE, HE TRIED T’ KILL ME AN’ NOW HE WANTS T’ FINISH THE JOB /AND/ COMPLETE THE SET, AH’ SWEAR I’LL DRAG HIS SORRY CHASS TO THE COURTROOM AN’ THROW HIM IN THE JAIL CELL /MYSELF/ IF I HAVE TO FER THIS—-
[CDN.7037] //: -MISS EIGHT IS ANGRY AS F R A G--
[Soon enough, Will comes in still putting on his lab coat, an expression of confusion on his face.]
Pyro: It's all over the news--
Will: .....
[He takes one look at the screen...]
Will: .....
Will: ....
Will: ...Hmm.
Will: ...That's a bit unorthodox.
Beck: --???
Avi: -Uh, Dad, the prez of CherryDyn is accusing you and Sanda Man of cyberterrorism-
Will: I can see that...
Will: (...This is...a little too desperate--)
Will: (What's your game, Greg...?)
Will: (Why this, and why now? You could have done this from the start, so...)
Will: (What changed--?)
Beck: ...Dad--?
Will: --Mm? Oh, sorry. Got a bit lost in thought, there.
Will: I don't see how this will hold water if they don't have proof...
[Another ping.]
<MCN005>: > I had to sedate Lady Carmen.
<DCP-001>: > {Papa, I'm scared...!} D':
<MC005>: >Now would someone please explain to me why my children are afraid and agitated?
[PING!]
[DR.SANDA] //: WILL--!!
[DR.SANDA] //: YOU NEED TO TURN ON THE TV--
[DR.WHITE] //: I already know, Soi.
Keltso: {Dad, we're looking at a second Monstropolis possibility here!!!}
<DWN-024>: > -Honestly, I am surprised THIS has not provoked a response from our brother, normally he would disrupt this sort of broadcast with a sardonic bit of humor-
<MC005>: > ... Will? What is going on over there?
[DR.WHITE] //: ...It seems Graham has turned his blame game towards us now.
[....Strange, why did Will sound so... dull?]
[DR.WHITE] //: Take a look.
<MCN005>: > ... This is very bad. Augh, I can't risk moving Tobias like this, but he shouldn't be here if it continues like this...
Digger: {Father, we should go home. It's not safe for you there. What if they try to storm the place?}
<DWN-019>: > That's it.
<DWN-019>: >Nico and I are withdrawing everyone home. Doctor, please prepare Tobias for transportation.
Goose: -woah woah wOAH WAIT WE KINDA STILL NEED DOC C AND SHADS AROUND-- -
<DWN-019>: > Don't make me bounce a Gemini Laser all the way from the lab, Six.
<DWN-018>: > -We will keep the family ALIVE and protect it from /all/ threats- </aggressive data that seems primarily directed at Pyro and... Beck?>
[DR.SANDA] //: -WE'RE GOING TO CALL OUR BROTHER--HE CAN SAY SOMETHING, MAYBE--
[DR.WHITE] //: .....
Beck: . . . (Wha....)
Goose: Guys, GUYS let's just nOT PANIC, OKAY--
<DWN-019>: > “Panic”? I beg your pardon, but we've seen where this trail leads before. Dying once was enough, thanks.
Avi: ---.....
Avi: -N...Ngh--
Cryo: --?? Avi--?
[They all falter a moment when they remember.
Avi knew EXACTLY what they were talking about.]
Avi: -Nngnngh it hurts--
Dyna: Avi--Avi breathe--
[And what's worse...
"I can't let you repeat my mistakes...!"
... Tobias had even tried to warn him.]
Avi: I can't--we--we can't let it END LIKE THAT--
Beck: Avi--!
Avi: -WE GOTTA DO SOMETHING--!! -
Pisces: ...
Pisces: ... They're taking callers now.
Pisces: I wonder who it is--
Speedy: Wait a second--
Speedy: --Isn't Washington the state where Seattle is?
[The voice that came on through the chatter was… not unknown to them all.]
"....Excuse me--yeah, I got something to say."
[PING--!]
[CDN.7037] //: --!!!
[CDN.7037] //: E-Eli...?
<DWN-019>: > ...???
Goose: ... The Cherry KNOWS this guy???
<FMN-008>: > -Waking up again, but distinctly less hostile- ...???
Goose: -tHIS I gotta hear- -Aaaand we reach over and turn up the volume more-
"I just wanna say..."
"What the HELL is that corporate moron thinking?!"
[There’s a brief shout from Snow over the feeds about bad words, but no one really pays attention.]
"Does he really expect us to believe his load of malarkey? For God’s sake, isn't that No. 9 trying to SAVE us?"
Digger: -PING, we like this guy-
"My family and I nearly DIED more times than I can count this week--does he even CARE about what he's sayin' will DO to other people? Is he STUPID?"
Speedy: {MORE OR LESS—}
"I don't know about you, but there's no way on God's good earth that that boy and his father are out to get us. Of all the damn BULLSH--"
[...He's cut off before he can continue.]
[CDN.7037] //: -ELI'S ALIVE-- LILY IS OK, THEY MADE IT--
[The next caller is from... Missouri!]
"Dude."
[... They sound like a college student. A very, VERY tired college student.]
Beck: ....?
"Is this guy high?"
Speedy: -Snorts-
"Weren't we talking a few months ago about how his own security system couldn't stop him from getting his HQ vandalized?"
Will: -...snorts softly-
[A PIC OF THAT POPS UP ON THE SCREEN as he continues--]
Beck: -snICKERS--
"And didn't he get hacked and stuff? I bet he just wants attention because he can't do his job right. CherryDyn can’t even look after their own ‘bots, anyway—I mean, just look at what happened over the summer. Why should we believe they know anything about OTHER people’s bots if they don’t even take care of their own models?”
<DWN-024>: > -That is an exceptionally good point…-
“Anyway, right on, little dude! I think your red fan wanted us to talk and stuff, uh, so if you station guys could give me the number to the lab, that would be great--"
Will: --!!!
[Digger looks thoughtful and serious for a moment, and then quietly slips away.
The next call is from...Minnesota?]
Cryo: --!
"H...Hello?"
[A young woman, it seems like...]
"I...I just want to thank M...Mr. Pyrogen--he...he saved me and all my coworkers..."
Pyro: !
"I...I don't think I would be alive I-If it wasn't for him and his brother...I don't think it was her fault--she was sick, right? I...I hope she's okay..."
Cryo: .....
"T...That's all..."
[Click.]
Jaden: -Surprised- ... We never got told about that. o.o
[The next caller was from...Indiana.]
"I SAW HIM, well sort of I was kinda hanging upside down but I SAW HIM IN THE POWER PLANT I WORK AT, HE WAS SO COOL--"
Beck: ....!
"I thought that I was gonna get fried but the power came back on and I guess he fixed his sister--I mean, come on, the REAL Dynatron wouldn't do that to her fans, she's amazing!"
Dyna: -Oh my God he's one of our fanszz--?-
"I just don't see how No. 9 was doing anything wrong? What's your deal, CherryDyn?"
Pisces: Insecurity, I bet. Among other things.
[He's cut off as well, and the next is from...Cali--!
...it seems to be...a male, but there were other voices in the background as well.]
"Look, I work at the mine Mickster comes and helps us with, that guy wouldn't hurt a fly, let alone someone else--!"
"YEAH THAT CORPORATE MOOK CAN SUCK IT--"
"MIC'S OUR FRIEND, YA CAN'T JUST DISS HIM AND HIS FAMILY LIKE THAT--"
"Berry, we're on the phone--"
"OI MIC IF YOU CAN HEAR US WE GOT YOUR BACK--"
[Another call, from New York—though it sounds like the girl is from California, herself. Another college student, it would seem.]
"Hi. I, like, take a Logic class and stuff?"
"And my roommate’s boyfriend is this huuuuge Avi fan--"
Avi: --!!
"He also likes Morse code and just-- it doesn't make sense?"
Jaden: —! (Uh-oh—!)
"If White really were working with the bad guys, why would his kids need to be 'saved'? You know, whole 'house divided can't stand' and stuff. Like, Avi was saying during his broadcast to 'save us' in Morse code and stuff, so-- he's just got it all wrong."
Nico: … Looks like they thought Toby was your “inner/true self” fighting against the virus. ?__?
Avi: .....Oh...
Goose: -Well, I guess they aren’t completely WRONG, so-
"And I hope his lawyers are well paid because that was a dumb thing to overlook. So I wouldn't be surprised if Sanda Enterprises sued or something."
"Anyway, we liked that cool new music when Beck was saving you, Avi! Get better soon, your show is really funny."
[Next caller--Japan.... There are translated subtitles on the screen with a second or so of delay.]
{"My disciples see No. 7 as a sort of role model--I just don't see how a noble and decorated swordsman of his caliber would suddenly turn his back on everything he stands for--not willingly. He was clearly struggling against whatever was ailing him, anyone can see that--!"}
[MN.7] //: ....I....
{"This must be so very hard on him--and his family. My thoughts go out to them."}
Beck: They....
Beck: They...they're taking our side....
[Click.]
"I think it's just--just awful what CherryDyn said just now--and Beck's just way too cute to be bad, ya know? I mean--come on, how can something THAT adorable be evil??"
[Click.]
"Hey, here's a thought--maybe CherryDyn should fire their whole social department because what the heck?"
[Click.]
"The Mighty Numbers are HEROES, man! Heroes! Just wait, they're gonna fix this any second somehow, they gotta--!"
[There is one final call--]
"Hi, I work with an emergency response group, and... I just wanted to thank the Mighty Numbers. I know Seven was sick and all, but he was fighting really hard—and that made a big difference. The thing a lot of people don't know is that most self-driving cars that were on the road when this started were on their way to pick people up-- empty. If... If he hadn't stopped as many as he did, there would be a lot more injuries along the roads right now, because they would have ended up driving uncontrollably through narrow city streets or small towns. Even while sick, he still saved lives."
[MN.7] //: --!!
"And we've gotten a lot of help from the healthy Xelbots-- one of my coworkers said that the one helping her right now said that it was 'what Bat would have wanted me to do.'"
"You guys just inspire people to, you know, go out there and be Mighty!"
"We believe in you!"
Beck: (They....)
Beck: (They believe...in me...?)
Will: Ah...
[DR.SANDA] //: -WILL--WILL YOU'RE HEARING THIS, RIGHT--
Beck: (People believe in me?)
Cryo:
-...NO WE'RE NOT CRYING, YOU ARE--
Dyna:
-We MAY be letting our mascara run--
[CDN.7037] //: -HEY--GUYS YOU'RE BLOWING UP ON ALL THE SOCIAL SITES, PEOPLE ARE TALKING, YO--
Avi: -RUNS TO CHECK THAT--GOOSE WE COULD USE A HAND--
Goose: -ON IT, ME-- -
Beck: I...I don't...know what to...
[...He's mostly shocked--he wasn't used to this much positive reception, and about HIM, of all people--!]
[There's... a faint humming noise. Followed by...

... Static?]
Speedy: …!
[It's not coming from the TV, but rather, over the feeds!]
-Ping.-

<DCN-008>: > {But it is no longer necessary to keep him Offline.}

<DCN-008>: > {And he wants everyone to participate.}
<DCN-008>: > -Yes, that means you MNNs and FMNs, too, you are family-
Pyro: ....That sounds like a good plan.
Beck: -Primarily watching the news as it unfolds...-
Avi: -Bro look at this feedback, man, it is MOSTLY GOOD--
Will: (...Just as I thought...won't hold water.)
Will: Alright--Soi, can you keep an eye on the situation for us?
[DR.SANDA] //: Can do, Will!
<MC005>: >Thank you, Soi, we appreciate that.
<MC005>: >Oh, and Beck? Could you come see me at the lab for a moment? Not necessarily right this second, but later today would be nice.
[Cardinal—still somewhat out of the loop due to radio silence—was on the highway, traveling as fast as his light cycle would take him—and as safely as he could, amidst the chaos.
He was going about 120 mph, weaving his way through infected self-driving cars, headed out of the city. The radio he kept on, now—he would need that, for the highway reports. Now that people could communicate, the world would slowly start cobbling together.
He jumped the cycle up and used the wreckage in his way as a ramp to soar into the air, returning the cycle to bar form and taking flight on his wind surfer for the next stretch of highway.
He couldn’t ride like this the whole way, not if he wanted to keep some charge in it.]
Cardinal: _(Glitch glitch glitch—!)_
[He opened fire on some rogue sign ‘bots that were starting to swarm, ducking to avoid crashing into an overpass.
He was VERY glad that only the self-driving cars were on the highway at this point—he knew how badly the highway crash had been—how long it had haunted his friends—when there had been people involved.
He was very glad Brand hadn’t been on the highway he was traveling—he had nothing personal against the clearly infected ninja, but he’d have sooner throw a car in Seven’s face than let the swordsmaster slow him down.
Because now he was REALLY on a time limit.]
>DISTANCE REMAINING: CALCULATING…
[He felt panicked the moment he realized it.
He could still hardly believe it, and _REALLY_ hoped he was seeing the situation wrong.
But if Shade were waiting to ambush prey, his target wasn’t an old grudge or a Mighty Number—or else he would have gone off and done that by now.
He was waiting for something _bigger.]_
Cardinal: _For the love of all that ever mattered, Shade—WAIT FOR ME!_

[The days seemed to go on forever. It had gotten very dark and cloudy outside, blending day into night.
Cossack and DWN-019 worked almost non-stop on Doctor Light Number Eight—with the Doctor’s sons enforcing mandatory mental and physical breaks to prevent burnout.
Getting to Tobias’s actual coding was not easy. Offline or not, he was highly defensive—and Snow wasn’t exactly able to help, being out cold, himself.
And when they did find him…
It was just a mess. There were errors all over the place, and clearing them up would take quite some while. Sifting through the error report from the last system crash alone took DAYS.
And now, they were finally getting past the system reports and into the base data.]
Mikhail: …
Siam: Doctor?
Gemini: Is everything alright?
Mikhail: Mmm? Oh, yes… I’m fine.
[…But it was a lie.
A lie so as to not distract the twins from their analysis on the data they had got from Avi as part of the ordeal—for that information could prove quite enlightening.
But no…]
Mikhail: Just… a little weary, I suppose.
[…He was concerned.
Inspection of the Awareness code had showed that it had changed. Crucial components had changed—rewritten themselves.
Somehow, the encounter with Avi had prompted (or, more likely, FORCED) Tobias to rewrite himself.
What worried Mikhail the most was that some of the coding was beyond what he could recognize.]
Mikhail: (-Groooooaaan- {Will… I wish you were here…!})
[He still had the few fragments of notes that his best friend had given him regarding coding with Xel. That was a lifesaver—it told him that some of this seemed to be connected to functioning within a Xel chassis.
It may just be junk data, useless without the proper hardware. (Which, of course, would mean it would need to be pruned somehow, or else it would cause perpetual system errors.)
But he couldn’t say for sure what it would do, yet. He needed to go through the rest of the code to be sure—
He needed to know for sure that Tobias’s self had not been torn apart by being fused with Avi.
Sure, they had a back-up, but…
He dreaded the thought of being forced to resort to using it.
But if it turned out that this damage was beyond repair… he would have no other choice.]
Mikhail: (Oh, Avi…! What did you DO to him?)
———————————————
[Cardinal forced himself to physically relax.
He had taken shelter in a cooled, dark, abandoned basement. The sun beat down mercilessly outside— 102ºF, and that was WITHOUT the humidity.
He had retreated there as much for safety as for the isolation.
He needed time to think.]
Cardinal: …
[Everything was dead ends. His attempt to get news on the situation ended with hearing Aviator talking in a cheerfully sadistic manner about his latest caller.
As he’d made his way toward the highways, he saw that they were still in complete chaos. Going anywhere was going to be time consuming and dangerous. He couldn’t afford to just go running around blindly, even though he had no current leads.
He was going to need some sort of focus…]
Cardinal: …
[He visualized the situation like a strategy game board. All the pieces in play… including his own.]
Cardinal: (Now if I were Shade, where would I be…)
[He was hitting a mental block, Shade shrouded in darkness.
He knew that this was because he was unwilling to consider the worst.
He forced himself to remember his own advice…]
-*-*-*-*-*-
“Remember, you aren’t really fighting them—their physical form, perhaps, but you’re actually up against the parasite.”
-*-*-*-*-*-
Cardinal: (…Right. The parasite. Focus on the virus, Lou…. What do you know about it?)
-*-*-*-*-*-
Jack: I think...whatever was in those crosses just...
Jack: Pulled out all the... bad parts of me...
-*-*-*-*-*-
Cardinal: …
[He forced himself to continue this line of thought, despite the cold pain it was making him feel.]
-*-*-*-*-*-
Shade: ...Bein' an assassin, Cards?
Shade: It's hard.
Shade: It's hard because...I'm so good at it.
Shade: Sometimes that even scares ME.
- - -
Shade: ...At the very least, Ah' can give them a quick death.
Shade: ... ... ...Never really felt the need to make someone suffer before.
Shade: At least, not like...ya know.
Shade: With malice and all that.
Shade: ...Ah' hope Ah' never do.
Shade: Because the minute ah' do? I'll be no better than Viper.
-*-*-*-*-*-
[Cardinal sucked in air through his teeth, pain stinging at him. He wished—not for the first time—that he could cry, just to have some way to relieve this stress.]
Cardinal: (Feeding what is already there… already there…. …)
[It was too much for him.
His Emotions.exe program was becoming exacerbated. He couldn’t continue this right now—not in this heat—without consequences.]
Cardinal: G-gghhh…
[He stood abruptly.
He was going to need to get somewhere with working air conditioning if he were to have any hope of finishing this process any time soon.
And time was not on his side.]

{Meanwhile, in Kansas City…}
[Cardinal and Drake had worked through the rest of the afternoon and evening, and into the morning hours.
It had been hard on them both, and they were both very tired. The blazing heat of the summer sun beat down with a merciless 102ºF.
Drake had valiantly pulled an overnighter as they went around from landmark to landmark; after their help at the zoo, word had started to spread about their actions. Not all communications were down for the count, though they were pretty limited to specific radio frequencies.
Cardinal was grateful that security officers, policemen, and employees were no longer hostile to him. He really preferred working WITH people, rather than having to deal with (un)friendly fire and explain after the fact.]
Cardinal: You holding up there okay, Drake…?
[He was starting to get concerned for his human travel companion. The only rest he’d been able to get was here and there while Cardinal was out in the field, fighting infected Xelbots. For the most part, he had refused to rest, instead helping out with evacuations. Cardinal had more or less forced him to rest at their last stop, as he knew he’d be in the museum a while. He was pretty sure that the man hadn’t eaten, either.]
Drake: You're asking me if I'm okay? You're the one doing all the fighting. I can handle this, don't worry.
Cardinal: (Uh-huh. And I’m… … I’m too tired to think of an analogy, ugh…)
[As much as Drake’s presence helped things go smoothly, though, he was relieved that their time evacuating the landmarks was just about at a close. While things were far from safe in the city, all the forces he had helped free up were spread out and assisting in curbing the damage. Things were almost stable… for an apocalypse, that is.
And not an hour too soon.
While Cardinal didn’t need to eat or sleep the way a human would, and could handle the heat a lot better… he still required energy, and was really prone to wearing himself out the longer he engaged in combat. Especially in the sweltering summer rays.
He was getting uncomfortably hot, and perilously close to overheating.]
Drake: ...You don't look so good either, friend. Don't you think you should take it a little easy? You're gonna burn yourself out at this rate.
Cardinal: Ha… I’ll be fine, I’ve been through much worse than this…
Jazz: Ree-owwwr…
[Cardinal looked down at his cat. She was staring up at the arena they had teleported to, tail twitching in anticipation of battle.
Cardinal put his hands to his hips and vented a deep sigh and as much heat as he could rid from his system.]
Cardinal: …I keep forgetting how big these buildings are. I’m used to an aerial view…
[Technically true.
But it was more that in his world…
…Arrowhead Stadium wasn’t a battle arena.]
Cardinal: Well, no time like the present. Do the people inside know we’re coming?
Drake: They know YOU’RE coming. There’s apparently a recruiter trapped in the basement who’s very curious about where you came from.
Cardinal: They wouldn’t be the first. I got that the last time I visited the arena in Titus, too, heh… though I left before the recruiters showed up.
Drake: I still can’t believe you’re friends with the Mighty Numbers. -Shakes his head- Crazy world…
Cardinal: -Looking up at the sky- About to get crazier….
Drake: …Heading on in?
Cardinal: Yeah. This time, though, Jazz stays with you.
Drake: …? Are you… sure about that?
[Cardinal turned and looked over his shoulder with a frown.]
Cardinal: There are a number of Combat ‘bots around here that have gone crazy. You’ll need the protection.
Drake: …Truuuuuue…
Cardinal: …
Cardinal: “But…”?
Drake: …But you’re…
Drake: Kinda going into the middle of a lot of high- and mid-ranking battle ‘bots…
[Cardinal put on a cheeky grin.]
Cardinal: Nothing I can’t handle.
Drake: By yourself?
Cardinal: Just long enough to get backup from the security people once the building is evacuated. So, what… fifteen minutes?
Drake: If you’re sure.
Cardinal: I’m very sure. However…
Drake: Yes?
Cardinal: -Points- After this, you should go home. I’m afraid I can’t teleport you there without exact coordinates, but…
Drake: -Handwaves it- I’ll get a ride or crash at somebody’s place or a church or something. What about you? Will you head back to Titus?
Cardinal: -Shakes his head- I wish. If I go home, or to Sanda Enterprises, they’ll make me stop. I can’t go home until my mission is over. (One way or another.)
[Cardinal used ITEM-2!]
Cardinal: See you as soon as things get under control.
[With that, he took off into the sky. It wasn’t long before he was looking down at a familiar scene of chaos—]
KKKKKWWWWWWHHHHHHHH!
Cardinal: !!
[He was suddenly hit by a blast of turbulence. He had to overcompensate for it—]
WWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!
Cardinal: Gyah—!
[Another blast!]
Cardinal: (These aren’t random! They’re—)
[There was a deafening noise as he was caught up in a blast that had also sent dust and debris flying. Blinded by the grit that slammed into his vents, he couldn’t see well enough to combat the next blast.]
Cardinal: AAAAAAHHH—!
[He was knocked from his windsurfer and sent crashing to the sands below.]
Cardinal: (Not this time!)
[He immediately teleported to the ground. The momentum he had gained in that brief moment still traveled with him, and he hit the ground hard enough to really feel it.]
Cardinal: (Ugh!)
[Just as the dust was clearing up, there was a loud whipping noise and something snagged his left ankle.]
Cardinal: !
“Got the little blaster!”
Cardinal: -More than a little aggravated- Oh do you really?
[YANK!]
[He was dragged a good yard upon the sands.]
Cardinal: Hey! -Reverting to heat vision- Cut that out!
[Cardinal used QUICK BOOMERANG!]
“AUGH!”
[His aim held true, which wasn’t hard—he just had to follow the trajectory of the rope tied around him, and the sharp projectiles found a score deep in the Xel of the ‘bot trying to wrangle him. Five shots, all fired in extremely quick succession. The rope went slack.]
“Get your act together, Cassidy!”
[Cardinal could now make out what appeared to be a rancher-themed Xelbot, seething as he tried to minimize the Xel loss from the wounds. One of his hands had been badly gashed, and a couple of the boomerangs had nicked his abdomen.]
Cassidy: Easy for YOU to say, Laura!
[Cardinal took the chance to cut himself loose and spring to his feet.]
Cassidy: [Glitch—]
[BANG!]
Cardinal: -Glares- Are you seriously—
[K-ZAP!]
[Cardinal’s words were stolen by a bolt that jolted through him like white fire.
While he wasn’t really particularly vulnerable to electricity, he was running hot. It didn’t help, and he felt seared by the heat.]
Cassidy: HA! Good one, Jones!
[The female voice called out again.]
Laura: Get ‘im, Dell!
[Cardinal had to roll to the side to avoid an incoming throwing axe. He scrambled to his feet, but…]
Dell: Yer gonna be nothin’ but Xel stains, city slicker!
[Cardinal leaped into the air, jumping to avoid shots from Cassidy as another axe came bearing down on where he was. It was only then that he noticed it.
The sands were covered in piles and puddles of sickly looking Xel, with some cores scattered here and there.
Whatever had been going on before he turned up… it hadn’t gone well for a loooooot of people.]
Cassidy: Regular jackrabbit, aincha!
Dell: Oi, Laura! This one’s puttin’ up a fight! You want in on the fun?
[When the lady turned around, Cardinal got a sinking feeling.
She must look fair enough on a normal day. Dirty blond hair done up in pigtails, with freckles and a big smile. Sturdily built—strong and stocky enough to wield her weapon of choice effortlessly.
But with the infected glow in her eyes and the Xel that covered the wicked scythe she was holding—not to mentioned splattered all across her overalls—she looked axe-crazy.]
Laura: He’s not going anywhere! Strike him!
[Cardinal teleported across the sands to be closer to her, and not a moment too soon. Another bolt of electricity zapped the spot where he had been.
Getting closer also proved to be a bad idea. He was immediately forced to shield against a threshing blow.]
Laura: Bah! Think you’re all that with that trick of yours? You must be—
[Cardinal dropped to the ground and gave a low kick, knocking her off balance. He teleported rather than scrambling to his feet, opting to stand against a wall with his shield out in front of him.
As the team gathered out together, he could finally make out who they all were.]
((Pic—Cardinal v Prairie Kings))
[There were five of them, mostly the size of an average human person. They all seemed to carry a farming and ranching theme, though the enormous wind ‘bot in the back stood out.]
[KRAK—]
[This time, he shielded against the bolt that came hammering into him.]
Cardinal: (Augh! I’ll have to keep moving around as long as they keep throwing lightning at me! Who is even doing that? I don’t see an electric ‘bot out there!)
[He didn’t bother thinking on it much.]
[Cardinal used MAGNET MISSLE!]
[The three homing shots zoomed off to their different targets. Cassidy tried to dodge, only to find that they were HOMING shots. Dell tried to axe his, causing it to explode on impact. As for the third…]
The path was disrupted and the ground shook as a fierce wind ripped up the sands. It was a stronger wind than the Magnet Missile was meant to handle, and it exploded harmlessly in the air. The same could not be said for Cardinal, however.
It was all he could do to keep ahold of his shield. He WAS, however, tossed a good few yards before the wind subsided.]
Cardinal: (Gaaahhhh…! I can’t fly in this, and I can’t use homing shots either! If those don’t work, there’s no way any of the other projectiles would, either! And I can’t use fire here… there are people’s cores in the sand!)
Laura: Got you on the run, do we, ya big wannabe? What’s the matter, at a loss for words?
Cardinal: Who are you people?
Laura: Boy, you must really have your self-important big-city head up your chass, or live under a rock so primitive it’d make the Flinstones ashamed. -Holding her hand out in a “stop” gesture at the one with a pitchfork- You really ARE a special kind of stupid to come challenge us without even knowing what you’re dealing with! But then again…
[She flared up with aura, bearing down in his direction with surprising speed.]
Laura: Nobody out there CARES as they should about them “flyover” states!
[Cardinal turned to shield it, using the small port at the top of the shield to open fire.]
[BLAM!]
[The short range plasma blast only seemed to serve to make her angry. Cardinal moved quickly on his feet, turning to teleport out into the open where could fire out of her range.
Doing so earned him another blast from the wind, kicking up Xel and sand in his face. Momentarily blinded by the Xel interfering with heat signals, he was easy prey for a merciless lightning strike. This time, it left behind persistent static in his audio receptors.]
Cardinal: (NO—!)
[The farm girl fighter laughed to see his predicament.]
Laura: Sturdy for something your size, aren’t you? Well! You sure still can’t keep up with the Prairie Kings, that’s for sure!
Cardinal: Grrr…!
[He refused to be taunted like this. It set off something deeper within him—a resentment, a malice—a wounded sense of pride.]
Cardinal: If I can handle the Mighty Numbers…
[He abruptly teleported atop the wind bot.]
Laura: ?!
Cardinal: I can certainly send you lot PACKING!
[Cardinal used CRASH BOMB!]
[The wind bot whipped up a violent gust as drills bore into it, the bombs flashing.]
Laura: JONES! COVER FOR ALLEY!
[Cardinal used LEAF SHIELD!]
[The sudden swirling cloud of ceratanium leaves served as a shield against the lightning strike that followed.]
Cardinal: -Broadcasts his whistle, LOUDLY-
[The piercing tones seemed to cause as much pain and discomfort as they did for Shade. It was the few second distraction Cardinal needed.
He vaulted off of Alley’s back and cast the sharp cloud of leaves behind him.
There was a satisfying grinding and scraping noise, followed by broken squeals. Just then, the bombs went off as well, causing the massive fighter to sway in pain.]
Cardinal: Sorry to ruin your slaughter show, Miss Laura!
[BWIP!]
[Cardinal used SUPER ARM!]
[WHOOMP!]
[The wind generator was knocked over onto his face by a powerful punch from behind. When Cardinal emerged again, he was using another windsurfer. He shot up into the air.]
Cardinal: But your fun and games are OVER!
Laura: GET HIM!
[Cardinal shielded to avoid a lightning bolt from frying his systems. He took comfort in the rush of movement, which served to help cool his systems.
It was now a matter of time that would determine if he could last, more than anything else. If he didn’t wrap this up before his core got too hot, then…]
Cardinal: -Shakes the thoughts off- Time for a lesson in versatility, Prairie Kings!
[Cardinal used MAGNET MISSILE!]
[Without Alley to sweep aside projectiles with gusts of wind, the missiles could not be prevented from reaching their targets. Cardinal didn’t wait in the same spot, instead increasing his speed to head right for Cassidy.
The ranch hand cursed and fired at him, but Cardinal shielded that easily.]
Cardinal: Sorry, kid, but it’s time you moseyed on home!
[Cardinal used QUICK BOOMERANG!]
[Abruptly making a sharp bank, the veteran turned and fired at the team member with the pitchfork.
Dell tried to take advantage of the opening to hurl an axe at him, but Cardinal had teleported out of the way in plenty of time.
He chose to land right by his target, lashing out in a new cast.]
[Cardinal used TOP SPIN!]
[The sharp wires ensnared the pitchfork and recoiled, whirring mercilessly as they cut their way right through it with a satisfying SNAP!]
Dell: By George, he’s stolen Jones’s thunder!
[Ah. So THAT’S where the lightning had been coming from.]
[BLAM! BLAM BLAM BLAM!]
[His quarry was not very defensive based, despite his stocky build. Jones swung to box at Cardinal, but the latter just dropped to the ground and rolled aside. He grinned as he looked up on his back, and—]
Jones: -PAIN!-
Cassidy: Damn bastard! That there’s fightin’ DIRTY!
[Cardinal laughed mercilessly as he sprung to his feet and vaulted over Jones, pushing him face-first into the sands.]
Cardinal: All’s fair in love and war, kid!
[He teleported during his flying leap, bearing down on the ranch hand with the full force of the tackle. The two of them hit the sands.]
Cardinal: Game over!
[Cardinal used QUICK BOOMERANG!]
[He riddled his opponent with boomerangs, causing him to cry out in pain. Cardinal gave a ping of sympathy as he teleported off of him, leaving him to bleed out into the sands.]
Cardinal: (I’m sorry, Shade!)
[Cardinal used MAGNET MISSILE!]
Cardinal: (But…! There’s still a chance for these people to be detained, if they’re hurt badly enough! If I have to, I’ll put them out of their misery, but…)
Cardinal: (If it comes to that, grant me your strength of nerve!)
[He turned his attention to Dell, who did not seem to be pleased to deal with a flying opponent. Cardinal couldn’t help but smirk a little—it was obvious to him that as a close-combat type of fighter, he relied on Alley to knock opponents out of the sky and keep them grounded.]
Dell: Ugh, condescending punk! Get off your high horse, ya big coward!
[He tossed a throwing axe at the windsurfer, but Cardinal swerved aside to avoid it.]
Cardinal: Time’s up, Dell.
[Cardinal used QUICK BOOMERANG!]
[A stream of the projectiles littered the sands in a straight line before finding score on the infected fighter. He gave a glitched screech of pain, becoming frenzied.]
>WARNING! WEAPON ENERGY LOW: QUICK BOOMERANG
Cardinal: (Ugh, great—)
[He quickly set the hardware that held additional capsules to switch out that particular Power Capsule for the one containing the Ring Boomerang.]
[WHUNK!]
[This time, the windsurfer was hit. Cardinal gave off an annoyed buzzing sound, impatient for the capsule to load into place.]
Cardinal: Send my regards to dreamland!
[Cardinal used RING BOOMERANG!]
[A direct hit, right to the collarbone! Cardinal grimaced at the damage, infected Xel beginning to seep out of the wounds.
He didn’t get long to dwell on the carnage, though.]
[He abruptly fell over backwards off of the windsurfer as a rope of sorts suddenly ensnared him by the neck. As he hit the sands, he was dismayed to see Cassidy back on his feet, hellbent on destruction despite his heavy injuries. He was flared up with the infected aura, and gave a hard yank on the noose.]
Cardinal: HNNN—!
[The crushing bind caused fraying in his audio cables, deafening him entirely. It was also crushing parts of his coolant system and mobility rig, causing oil and other fluids to build up at his jaw hinges and leak out the sides of his mouth.
Heat was also starting to build up in his skull, and he felt disoriented by the system-wide warnings that he was approaching dangerous temperatures. If he teleported while running this hot, he would definitely overheat and start taking damage to his mobility rig and processors.]
[YANK!]
[Cardinal dropped his shield, grabbing at the rope as he used some surge to repair the audio cables.
It was lucky he did, or he might not have heard the two other fighters bearing down on him.]
Cardinal: !!!
[Cardinal used SKULL BARRIER! Cardinal used SUPER ARM!]
[He flared up with ghostly flames and pulled on the rope with all his might, pulling it right out of the rancher’s hands. The knot of the noose was sliced clean through as Laura’s scythe came down right on his throat. There was a shrieking noise as the blade clashed against the barrier protecting him from getting beheaded.
It also served to bounce off the broken pitchfork that had been slammed into his left foot in an attempt to pin him in place.]
Cardinal: This ends NOW!
[Cardinal used THUNDER BEAM!]
[Shrieks of pain as an extremely powerful bolt of lightning shot out in three directions. Laura was caught directly in the crossfire of the tri-directional beam.]
Cardinal: Shoulda brought candles, Laura!
[Cardinal used SPARK SHOCK!]
[He immediately followed up with another electrical attack, broadcasting his quips over the blast of electricity.]
Cardinal: It’s LIGHTS OUT for you!
[Cardinal used SUPER ARM!]
[He grabbed the fallen leader and slammed her into Jones, who was still trying to skewer him with what was left of his pitchfork. The two were sent flying into a wall.]
[Cardinal used NEEDLE CANNON!]
[He quickly turned and fired at Cassidy, impaling him dead-on with an enormous needle. The rancher staggered back and fell to the ground.]
Cardinal: So STAY DOWN!
[Cardinal used HYPER BOMB!]
[He hurled the massive explosive right at the two of them, as well as one at the fallen wind ‘bot.]
<DLN-000>: >EVERYONE TAKE COVER!
[He grabbed his shield and braced himself.]
[The explosion was a deafening roar of fire, and there was a great crashing noise as parts of the stadium seating were sent flying. Even with his shield taking the brunt of the blasts, he was still slammed into the wall.]
>WARNING! INTERNAL TEMPERATURE HAS EXCEEDED SAFE LEVELS!
[It was only when the debris finally stopped falling that he finally dared to look out from behind his shield, gasping for air.
There was no sign of his opponents, nor of their weapons. Sand had been kicked up everywhere, covering up the cores that had been scattered throughout the field. Not surprising, considering he’d used explosives that were designed for flattening buildings. Rather excessive.
No kill like overkill.]
Cardinal: (No… where IS everybody…)
>WARNING! INTERNAL TEMPERATURE HAS EXCEEDED SAFE LEVELS!
[Cardinal fumbled for an E-tank. It was a precious resource to use, but he had to do his best to heal all the damage done before anyone tried to give him medical attention.
The high dose of concentrated surge was like a refreshing plunge into warm water—he felt revitalized, and no longer as thirsty. All the beating he’d taken melted away, leaving him whole…]

Cardinal: -Staggers to his feet, venting heavily- (Need to at least make it into the shade…)
[He only made it to the entrance before the heat became too much.]
>INITIATING PROTOCOLS…
>POWERING DOWN…
[He didn’t even have time to respond to the incoming radio messages before dropping down to the sand.]

[A different story for every day of the month, perhaps—but never the chilling truth of what REALLY happened…
Such thing were best left upon the fringes of nightmares, right…?]
((Aaaaaaaaa thank youuu~~ <333 ))

Small request for @mowseries | @sirensniper of the AU version of Countershade <:
I can never turn down MN9 related stuff, honestly. I love a lot of the designs way too much haha. Not super gory on this one given the robot in question is essentially made of nanomachines but aaayyyy!

{July 4th, 20XX}
[The sky was clear and bright on the morning of Independence Day as the Mighty Numbers took their seats in the crowd.]
((Pings between them as someone—maybe Beck—asks if they know what’s going on. Jack adds that it’s a good question.))
[They were not alone; Jack, the Rebel Angels, the Sandas, and the Cossacks were all there with them. The Robot Masters were in their armor, looking very much uneasy and feeling out of place.]
<DWN-024>: > {All we know is that President Morandi is making a speech. Why we have to be here, I do not know—but Mikhail seemed to think it was important.}
((Some back and forth about this))
<DWN-019>: >Well, I for one find it rather impressive <DWN-019>: >that they put together the setup so quickly!
[They were all gathered together in one of the city gardens. There was a large, grassy field where tables and chairs had been set up, as well as a small platform and a podium. The garden was decorated in red, white, and blue, with the Old Glory proudly on display in the form of small flags in the centerpieces on the tables, and as a large flag near the podium. The garden seemed untouched by the chaos of the last two weeks: indeed, it was as if it had never happened here.]
((Someone remarks that Felix must have come by in the night to restore the gardens to their former glory.))
[The man in question was seated at a nearby table, quietly playing with string. He was hard to recognize at first; he wasn’t wearing his usual gear, and was dressed instead to fit in with the rest of the crowd as much as possible.
Beside him sat several others that they had met on their journey or otherwise knew well—some having traveled for the occasion, and others having returned home to Titus itself.]
Beck: (There’s Mao, Felix… that must be Eli with Gwen and the baby…. And I’ll bet that’s Drake there with them, too.)
[He could see other Xelbots in the crowd as well—most he recognized from advertisements, though a few he had met in person.]
Beck: (Plume, Cassidy, Laura… not sure who the one with the wolf outfit is, but I know I’ve seen her before…)
[There were many dozens of other people he didn’t recognize, and the reporters—]
Beck: -Double take- (Goose?)
[MN.9] //: Goose, is that you?
[The mirror punplane give a winning smile and a thumbs up in the distance. He was in his Civilian form, and only recognizable to those who knew him. He seemed to be standing in for Avi, as far as Beck could tell.]
Beck: (I guess Kate must be here, too…. I don’t see her, though…)
[He turned around to sit back down in his seat, swinging his legs a bit beneath the table.]
Beck: (I wonder what everyone’s here for…)
[He didn’t have long to wait to find out. Soon, the music from the live band faded, and the chatter started to die down. When everything was quiet, the person at the podium began speaking.]
“Would everyone please rise for our national anthem…”
[There was a slight rumble from chairs being pushed back and people standing up. Attention was given to the flag as the song began to play, and the woman at the podium sang in a clear voice. Emotion flickered through the crowd, and the public channels became an almost stifling sea of pride, devotion, sorrow, joy, anxiety, and hope. Even with tuning all but his family out, the channel was still filled primarily with Bat’s rather strong emotion stirred up by the anthem, which overpowered the others’.]
[MN.2] //: Careful there, Batty! Don’t go all waterworks on us when we’re on TV!
[MN.5] //: ((Some sort of retort to this))
[MN.1] //: Settle down, you two. Secretary Donald is about to speak.
[The Secretary of Defense was sharply dressed, and gave off an air of authority.]
[MN.3] //: I wonder when he got hiszz other clotheszz. He didn’t have that uniform with him when you brought him back from the White House, did he?
[MN.7] //: Quiet—
[MN.3] //: Oh, pleaszze—he’szz juszzt introduczzing Madame Prez. No biggie.
[MN.5] //: Look sharp! He just said for the audience to be seated!
[There was a moment of quiet whispering as President Minerva Morandi came and took the podium. A hush fell over the crowd, and then she began speaking.]
Min: Thank you all for coming here. Some of you have traveled long and far to be here, and I assure you—each and every one of you is appreciated and welcomed here today.
[She spoke in a relaxed tone, one that was informative in nature. The same kind of tone you might find in a classroom.]
Min: Today we celebrate and honor Independence Day. This living memorial to the American spirit dawned this year on the tail of one of the most devastating disasters in our nation’s history: arguably the worst crisis in living memory for many of us here today.
Min: A fortnight ago, a crippling virus went live and swept across the nation. This plague of violence and destruction lasted eleven consecutive days. During this time, many homes were destroyed, families scattered, and priceless lives lost forever. We stand here today in a nation recovering from grievous injury: a desolation that has not been seen outside of times of war or terror. The scale is a likes of which has never before been seen in our nation’s history, and will be remembered in the tides of time along with 9/11 and Pearl Harbor. We are all—at most—only one or two degrees of separation from loss. Truly, it has been an ordeal that we will never forget.
[There was a moment of somber silence out of respect for the honored dead, leaving them alone in their thoughts.]
((Reflection on this))
[Min spoke up again.]
Min: And yet, the sun rises. It rose today on a free nation, full of brave men and women who stood tall against the darkness. It rose today on a people of unbroken spirit: a people unconquered by fear or despair. It rose today on a nation that still retains her greatest assets: the dream of a bright, prosperous, and peaceful future… and the people who live to carry out this dream through their force of will.
[She spoke more intensely now.]
Min: You all have heard tales of our countless heroes: from those who serve in an official capacity, to the everyday man brought up to the challenge. For every report of chaos, there is a report—or several—of great deeds. But the greatest story has yet to be told: and that is one we must write ourselves. A story we will write together, standing truly united.
Min: And that is the story of how we rose again, like a phoenix from the ashes, to stand once again as the shining city on a hill.
Min: This is our story. It does not end with desolation and despair—instead, it carries on past the dark and into the dawn. Yes, the sun rises: and it shines down on potential. From the clouds we will spin our own silver linings. We are not a people who break under terror—not in the dismal moments of our distant past, and not after the dark days of the present.
Min: We are a people of spirit: the drive to produce, to create something new. The burning desire to secure a safe and eager future for our friends and loved ones has not diminished, and this fire will carry us through as we pull together and rebuild.
Min: We will work together, side by side. Not just with each other, but also with our friends and allies. Together, we will bring life back to our cities, and peace back to our people!
[There were loud cheers at this, and much applause. Minerva smiled and looked down over her glasses.]
Min: It will not be easy, but nothing worth doing is painless. There will be obstacles—for that is the way that life is.
Min: But we shall overcome them, just as our ancestors overcame the great trials of their pasts. Working together, we will reach for the stars—and together, we shall thrive.
Min: I leave you now with the words of one such hero—words we all can live by.
Min: “Hope LIVES.”
((Undoubtedly some reaction to this))
Min: As long as we hold on to that hope, and do not let it die… working together, we can travel the roads wherever our dreams take us.
Min: Let the fire of hope burn brightly within each and every one of you not only this day, but in the days to come. Do not be afraid to pitch in—no good deed, however small, is without meaning.
Min: And remember: greatness starts with you. It cannot be done without you.
Min: Thank you.
[There was another round of applause, and Minerva stepped down and off to the side, speaking with some individuals who were standing near a table in the back. Meanwhile, Desmond came back up to the podium. He began to speak when the noise died down.]
Des: As the President alluded to, the past few days have been filled with tales of heroic deeds, great and small. The greatest of these have caught the media by storm, and their stories have been heard across the community. Today, we shall recognize these heroes, and give them the full honors that they have earned.
((Some reaction and excitement as they suddenly realize THAT'S why they're there today))
[As they were talking among themselves, Desmond began calling off names. As each person was listed off, they came forward to the platform. There, after Desmond gave a brief description of their bravery and heroic deeds, Minerva presented them with medals and shook their hands.]
((More excitement, Avi recognizes half these stories, Bat’s explaining what the medals are for, etc. etc.))
[There were now only three boxes left on the table.]
Des: ((Calls off Jack’s name))
Jack: —?!!?!
((YAAAAY JACKIE))
[An invisible hand yoinked the stunned CDN out of his seat and gave a prompting nudge forward, almost causing him to stumble.]
<FMN-008>: > Congratulations, Jackie. <3
Jack: ((STILL VERY MUCH ALL ???!?))
((Pic—Jack receiving his medals))
Des: ((Gives an account of Jack’s daring and heroic venture to evacuate the Space Needle in the midst of a rainstorm while under fire, and awards the Secretary of Defense Medal for Valor and Presidential Citizens Medal))
[There was a loud round of applause and the Mighty Numbers cheered.]
((Various more YAAAAAAY JACKIE, and then he goes off to his seat again rather stunned))
[There was a moment of silence after the applause died down, with Des taking a pause. It seemed to draw and heighten attention.]
Des: With heroism comes sacrifice—the sacrifice of self for the sake of others. Not every tale of heroic deeds is without price—and it is such a sacrifice that we recognize now.
((Reaction to this))
Des: At this time, we ask that Cardinal Light’s representative please come forward to receive the medals in his place.
[There was a sudden burst of anxiety across the feeds.]
<DWN-012>: >Wait—one of us has to go up there? On international TV?
<DWN-011>: >Who?
<DWN-013>: >Well, with Cardinal gone, Nico's the acting head of the family…
<DWN-018>: >I don't—!
<DWN-018>: >Can't— can't someone—
<DWN-018>: > -HELP, CAN'T SOMEONE ELSE DO THIS— -
[Aww, that was very much pleading data being sent to the Mighty Numbers—]
[MN.2] //: ...UH, OKAY, SHADE BRO—
[MN.8] //: -Grumbles- -Me goin' up there is gonna stir up trouble-
[MN.5] //: -THEN WE WILL—-
[MN.1] //: Stand down, Bat.
[MN.1] //: As head of this family...I think I should go. From one leader to another.
[Pyro strode up to the platform, standing at the ready. He looked very snappy in the fireproof suit that Felix had made for him, which had finally been put to good use.]
((Pic—Cardinal (as a ghostly entity) being presented with his medals))
Des: When the virus broke out, Cardinal Light set about personally evacuating all of Kansas City’s major landmarks, fighting his way non-stop through several days of combat before he succumbed to internal injuries. This did not deter him from setting out to find his best friend—a journey which took him to the White House. Working under fire, he successfully evacuated the White House of all visitors and personnel with only one casualty—himself.
((Reactions to this))
Des: Although he is sadly not able to be here today, we recognize Mr. Light’s great efforts in helping the heartland and the nation’s capital. He is hereby awarded: the Presidential Medal of Freedom…
[Minerva began pinning the medals to his suit.]
Des: …the Medal of Honor…
Bat: ((Remarks on how he is getting REALLY high honors))
Shade: ((Reflects on this))
Des: …the Homeland Security Distinguished Service Medal…
Shade: ((More internal commentary))
Des: …and the Purple Heart.
Shade: ((Final—likely wistful or rueful—commentary))
[There was another round of applause, and Minerva shook Pyro's hand firmly.]
Min: When he wakes up again properly, let him know that we'd like to see him, hmm?
Pyro: I will make sure he knows.
[After the applause died down, Pyro took his seat again.]
Pyro: -Touches the medals lightly- ((Internal commentary/reflection))
[Murmurs ran through the crowd with excitement. The air seemed charged—and not just with Tobias and Dyna being on the edge of their seats in anticipation.]
Des: Finally, we recognize the hero who made today possible. The young man who saved not only his family, but the lives of everyone across this nation—and the welfare of those in nations beyond it.
((EXCITED CHATTER))
Des: ((Calls Beck forward))
[Loud cheers erupted from EVERYBODY there as Beck took the stage, creating a din that Des didn’t even try to talk over.]
Beck: ((Reaction to this))
[The noise _eventually_ died down.]
((Pic—Beck getting his medals))
Des: ((Goes on to summarize and praise BECK, THE HERO, going over how he rescued his family and those that had been trapped, cleaning up Titus, purging the virus once and for all, and restoring everyone back to their healthy selves. He is awarded with: the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Secretary of Defense Medal for Valor, and Health and Human Services Secretary's Recognition Award.))
Beck: ((ALL THESE FEELS, HOW TO HANDLE THEM))
[The crowd roared and cheered again, and he got a standing ovation. Fireworks went off overhead.]
((YAAAAAAY BEEEEEEECK, OUR HEROOOOOO
HEROOOOOOOO))
Beck: ((PEOPLE BELIEVE IN ME NOW, AAAAA))
((HEROOOOOOO))
Min: Congratulations, Mighty Number Nine!
((HEROOOOOOOOOOOOOO))
Beck: ((Concluding thoughts on the matter, hope lives))
