So, I have a ton of these that I never posted about…
Here’s info on ALL of my AUs, whether I’ve posted about them or not! Mostly in order of when I made them! I’ll provide a place for a link with each, if there’s no link I haven’t posted about it yet.
Future AU: (Mostly) adheres to canon. My fankids and their adventures, along with the shenanigans the ninja get up to when married! It’s polyninja, but the ninja are married to their female love interests too and the girls are married to eachother. Also contains Destinyshipping, Garmaclouse and Badboyshipping. Consists of two parts: Right after Lilly, the ninja’s youngest is born; and thirteen years later, when most of them are old enough to be training. Learn more here.
Serprincetine AU: Follows a completely different story than canon. 100% a polyninja AU. All of the ninja are serpentine: Kai is the prince of the Hypnobrai, Cole is a Constrictai training to become a Peacekeeper’s Guard, Jay is a Venomari mechanic, and Zane is a Fangpyre mercenary hired to kill Kai before his 18th birthday. A Peacekeeper is someone who’s supposed to keep the peace between the five tribes. Garmadon, an Anacondrai, is the current Peacekeeper, while Kai is his successor. Garmadon is going to die on Kai’s 18th birthday, so Lloyd hates Kai. Zane was hired to kill Kai so the Fangpyre could start a war. There’s a lot to unpack and it’s also a soulmate AU, so I can’t fit everything here. Learn more here.
Vampire Hunter AU: Follows a completely different story than canon. Lavashipping and Technoshipping. Jay and Cole are vampire hunters who have been hired by their village’s leader, Wu, to kill the vampires living in the castle above the town: Kai and Zane. Due to a long and harsh blizzard, Cole and Jay are trapped with the extremely hot vampires in the very nice castle. They can tolerate it I guess. Learn more here.
I Obliterate My Favorite Character for No Reason Other Than Angst AU/Kai Dies AU (first one is the official name/tag): Starts out same as canon but deviates in Season 3. No ships. Kai says in Season 4 that he wanted to die instead of Zane, so I grant his wish. Except he doesn’t come back because he’s made of flesh and bone. Read more here.
Everything’s Alright AU: Follows a completely different story than canon. No ships. Nothing bad happens, so the ninja can just live normal lives. Read more here.
Kai Smith is Now Kai Chen and He’s Evil AU/Kai Chen AU: Slightly deviates from canon. Kinda plasmashippy. Essentially Kai and Skylor swap places, with Chen adopting Kai and Skylor’s mom adopting Nya after Ray and Maya die and Chen and his wife divorce. Kai fucking dies, then tries to help his dad wreck Nya and Skylor, then dies again. Read more here.
Actor AU: Follows a completely different story than canon. No ships. The characters are all actors, simply playing parts in a TV show. Most of them have different backgrounds and slightly different personalities. It has very little development, and it doesn’t really have much of an actual storyline. Learn more here.
Jay Suffers AU: Starts out same as canon but deviates in Season 4. No ships. All of the ninja except Jay die at some point and Jay is suffering. Ed and Edna place him in a mental hospital after he attempts suicide and he befriends Harumi. Mostly focuses on his time in the mental hospital, and I try to make it wholesome sometimes to offset all of the angst. Read more here.
Ninja Nya AU: Slightly deviates from canon. Contains plasmashipping, a hint of lavashipping in season 3 and 4 and phoenixshipping. Everything’s the same except Kai and Nya swap places: Nya is the ninja of Fire, and Kai is Samurai X/the ninja of water. Read more here.
Oni and Dragons AU: Slightly deviates from canon. Contains plasmashipping and Jaya, probably. Maybe Wusako, if you squint. And possibly glaciershipping to accompany the plasma. Oni and Dragons were created to serve humans like the FSM. Wu is also a full human. Wu and Garmadon aren’t brothers; rather, Garmadon is Wu’s former bodyguard. Garmadon is an Oni, and like most is sick of being bossed around by what he considers a powerless species. He and every Oni elemental master lead a revolt to gain their freedom, while Wu and the Dragon elemental masters fight against them. The Oni win, but Garmadon wants to completely control the humans and Dragons. He gets banished to the Underworld. Wu started training Morro, who was half-Oni and half-Dragon, to foster peace between the warring species. Morro gets killed by an Oni. Wu later starts training two half-Dragons (Kai and Nya), two half-Oni (Cole and Jay) and a Nindroid (Zane) for a second attempt. They later find Lloyd, who is Wu and Misako’s illegitimate child (Misako is still married to Garmadon) and 100% human. Dragons and Oni are both very protective species by nature, so Kai, Nya, Jay and Cole all become very protective of Lloyd. They learn about Morro much sooner, since Wu actually honors him and his death with a small altar and talks about him. They raise Morro from the dead, since he’s still the Chosen One (because Lloyd doesn’t deserve that burden). He kicks Garmadon’s ass and everything else is just shenanigans with the ninja, Morro and redeemed Garmadon. Wu actually acknowledges that he is not a good parent. The ninja are all adults because Wu learned from his mistakes like he should have in canon. Read more here.
The Pirate and His Dragon AU: Follows a completely different story from canon. The entire purpose of this AU is plasmashipping. This AU combines the popular concept of Pirate! Jay with my Half-Dragon! Kai because I thought it would be cool. Mostly just slice-of-life as they do pirate and half-dragon things. Read more here.
Garmadon’s Servant Kai AU: Slightly deviates from canon. Canon ships (Jaya and Llorumi). Kai starts training with Wu, only to soon reveal he’s been in cahoots with Lord Garmadon the whole time. He remains a traitor and nuisance until season 3, in which he pretends to chill out due to Garmadon becoming good. He slowly warms back up to the ninja until season 8, in which he’s the Quiet One instead of Harumi (Lloyd gets the healthy romance arc he deserves) and Kai essentially completely destroys any more chances of reconciliation with his former teammates and sister.
More bizarro au 😔👊
Kai growled in frustration as he faced the Mechanic as best as he could alone. The Mechanic had recently escaped from prison and had rounded up some other escapees to go on a robbing spree of dozens of tech stores all around Ninjago. It didn't take Nya and Zane too long to figure out that the Mechanic was attempting to construct a type of bomb that was sold very highly on the black market. After almost six weeks of none stop chasing, the Ninja managed to track the Mechanic to an abandoned warehouse at the docks.
Unfortunately, the Mechanic wasn't alone.
All the fugitives he had recruited were there as well to ensure their boss wasn't disturbed while finishing the bomb. While his team fought against the criminals, Kai had somehow managed to sneak past them all. He considered staying to help the others but a look from Lloyd told him what to do and he ran through the docks and into the warehouse. He found the Mechanic alone with a half-constructed bomb, surrounded by hundreds of boxes containing many different things.
As soon as he saw the red ninja, he smirked and armed his blaster's arm.
"Well well well, we meet again Fire Ninja." He cackled as they faced off. The Mechanic blasted a big fire blast while Kai blasted his own fire blasts. They were at a stalemate. Kai was still weak from the ordeal but he had to think of something fast. His eyes caught sight of boxes full of old fireworks. He suddenly had an idea but it was very, very risky, but he was ready for anything. He stood up and put his hands in front of him. He let all his fire gather and blasted it all to the dozens of boxes full of fireworks.
The Mechanic's eyes widened when he saw what Kai just did.
He tried to shoot the red ninja, but it was too late. The Mechanic immediately ran and jumped out the nearest window, but Kai was too far away from any nearby exits to escape the incoming flames.
"I'm sorry guys." The brunette said out loud as his fire hit the boxes. It was enough to get to destroy the device and the warehouse.
"No! I was so close!" The Mechanic shouted as a massive explosion occurred while he stood at a safe distance. It was enough to cloud the entire docks. The rest of the Ninja saw the big explosion and they hoped everyone was alright. Eventually, the smoke cleared and they saw everything clearly.
"You did it, Kai," Lloyd said, proud of his unofficial big brother. All the Ninjas started looking around for their hotheaded brother but they couldn't find him. Lloyd was starting to grow worried. He looked around more and he started growing more worried. He eventually found Kai laying on the ground. "Kai!" He shouted as he ran up to the brunette. His amber eyes were closed. Lloyd tried to shake him awake but when he touched his shoulder, he drew back sharply.
He gasped as he felt that Kai's skin was very cold.
Because Kai was the Master of Fire, he was almost always like a human furnace so the fact that he was so cold sent alarm bells ringing loudly in Lloyd's mind.
"Kai?" He started calling Kai as if in a trance. "No Kai, don't do this." He pleaded as he picked up Kai's head but he still received no movement. Lloyd's eyes started to water and he held back the urge to cry. Maybe Kai was overly exhausted or something. Lloyd's eyes started overflowing with tears. "No Kai, please don't leave!" He shouted. Still nothing. Lloyd started crying, then he realized something else. Kai didn't have a pulse. Lloyd stared in shock, then his tears grew more forcefully as Kai's tanned skin began to grow grey and his lips turned blue.
"KAI, NO! NO!" He screamed as if Kai could hear his voice. He held on to Kai as if that would re-start his heart. Lloyd's body became racked with sobs. He started sobbing uncontrollably and hysterically as he was shouting to the sky. "KAI, PLEASE COME BACK! PLEASE!" He shouted to the heavens hoping someone would hear his cry, but nothing happened. He continued to sob both uncontrollably and hysterically on the ground as the others found him.
As soon as they realized what had happened, they all broke down.
Nya was the worst. She fell to the ground, with only Jay holding her up, as she howled and sobbed louder than anyone believed she could be. But no amount of crying and begging would undo this. Kai Ash Smith was dead...

⚠⚠⚠!!!!SPOILERS FOR SEASON 15!!!!⚠⚠⚠
Like I'm sure the rest of you are, I was devasted by the ending of season 15 and Nya's death, and Kai didn't even cry. I don't think the situation really hit him. For Jay, he just lost a lover, and while his emotions should not be overlooked Kai has a much deeper bond with her than anyone. He raised her after their parents were kidnapped. He always made sure she was safe. When he couldn't he still did all he could to make sure she was prepared, he let her do her own thing even if he didn't like it, he always had to be that stronger big brother.
The situation didn't hit him and he's still in denial.
I'm hoping next season is Kai focused and how he's dealing with the loss of his little sister. We might even get that evil Kai storyline in the future as Kai deals with his grief. But we all must be prepared because let's face it, Ninjago is going to be very different from now on with the passing of Kirby Morrow and now the death of Nya. I am not gonna sugarcoat this, it might be rough to some Ninjago fans but thankfully this community is tough and we'll help each other through it.
Not sure if you do prompts but feel free to ignore it but can we see more life of a high school vampire pretty please?
I’ll try to update Life of a high school vampire soon but no promises, I do have other stories to work on at the moment.
Kai barely managed to suppress a disgusted hiss as his nose was assaulted by the robust odors of the Best Body Studio as he entered the building. The only reason he was even in a place like this was that that brat he called a little sister had finally worn him down. Almost every letter he got from her was filled with pleas for him to send some pictures of the hot guys at his school. But he couldn't blame her. They grew up in a humongous castle in the middle of a giant valley filled with forests and mountains.
The nearest village was at least a two-hour bat flight.
That paired with two extremely over-protective parents and her emerging teenage hormones would probably drive Nya into madness. So, mainly to shut Nya up, Kai 'borrowed' a camera from Jay and headed for the Best Body Studio. This studio had a rather basic set-up, including essentials such as a bench, some dumbbells, and resistance bands that could still provide a great workout. Other equipments the gym had were training benches, dumbbell sets, barbell sets, kettlebell sets, pull-up frames and bars, treadmills, stationary bicycles, and rowing machines.
At the other side of the gym from the entrance Kai could see a set of double doors that led to a dance studio.
Like most forms of aerobic or cardio exercise, dancing had many health benefits, including weight loss. This gym offered seven forms of dance that would help people to lose weight. These dance forms were Zumba, hip hop, belly dancing, freestyle dancing, pole dancing, ballet, and ballroom dancing. Kai might have been tempted to sign up for a dance class if it wasn't for the foul smells. As you entered the gym, it was easy to be drawn further in by the scents that invigorated to get those juices flowing for weight lifting.
These included vibrant citrus notes of orange, lemon, lime, and peppermint.
That quickly changed, however, when you left the front lobby and entered the main exercise area. The primary culprits of this stink were bacteria, sweat, and body oils, which built up inside synthetic fabrics and caused a literal stink. In addition to the subjecting gym apparel to those large quantities, the fabric the athletic outfits were made from was another odor contributor. Choosing to breathe through his mouth, Kai walked through the gym, looking for the perfect subject for a secret photoshoot.
It wasn't a busy day at the gym, so there weren't a lot of options.
But Kai didn't mind the lack of people. He hated being in crowded places and these photos wouldn't be for him. Nya would have to accept and deal with whatever he sent her. All of a sudden, Kai found himself freezing when his amber eyes locked onto the very muscular body of Cole Brookstone. He hadn't seen Cole since their brief meeting at the pet store. The human had his back to him as he lightly jogged on a treadmill, with the manacles of the chains jingling loudly like Christmas bells.
Kai could hear some of the other people in the gym snickering at the manacles, but Kai didn't look at them.
His eyes were fully focused on the raven-haired human in front of him. Cole was in dark orange shorts with a water bottle clipped to the side, and a tight, black tank top. He had AirPods in with rock music blasting out so loud that Kai was certain the noirette was going to go deaf. The young vampire was almost drooling as he paid close attention to how Cole's tank top wrapped around and stuck to his sweaty, toned body. Had Cole's skin always been that shiny or was it because of the sweat?
Just then Cole pressed a button on the treadmill and his jogging slowly stopped.
As Cole took a big gulp of the bottle, Kai began to panic. He wasn't ready to see Cole again and he didn't want to have to explain why he was here to his one-night stand/possible crush. Within the blink of an eye, Kai dashed to what he thought was an exit. As soon as the doors closed behind him, Kai relaxed and took a deep breath. Only to gag loudly and grip his nose tightly. It was like someone had ripped his nose off, set a fire inside the cavity, and then poured acid into it.
It was the familiar smell of garlic.
After Kai got over the shock, he opened his amber eyes and frowned when he saw that he was in a large kitchen. Then he remembered that this gym also offered lessons to teach people how to cook healthy meals. There were a few people in the class and they were all staring at him. That was when Kai noticed one was approaching him with a concerned look. The first thing Kai noticed about this stranger was his eyes. His eyes were bright blue, and his hair looked to be white and stood up straight in something like a crew cut.
He was wearing white pants and light grey shoes with a long-sleeved, cyan blue shirt under a thick, navy blue knitted vest.
He was also wearing a small, very shiny gold pin with the red letters of T.S.G engraved into it. Although his clothing was mostly hidden behind a bright pink and flowery apron. He looked to be around Kai's age, if not slightly older. Kai's eyes narrowed when he saw the small, gold cross hanging from this person's neck, but said nothing as he approached.
"Are you alright?" He asked warily.
"Yes, what's it to you?" Kai snapped impatiently.
"I didn't mean to offend you, I just noticed that you seemed distressed." The teen replied calmly and extended his hand for Kai to shake. "My name is Zane, are you here for the cooking class?"
"I'm Kai, and no, I was trying to leave but got turned around." He half-admitted, blushing at the memory of Cole's giant frame, but his scowl towards Zane never left his face. For some reason, being near this human upset his stomach.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that; but if you are hungry you could try my dish; I could use an honest opinion and you seem like a person who speaks their mind." He smiled before heading to a counter and returning to a piping hot dish. Zane had made a perfect pan-roasted chicken with lemon-garlic green beans. He held it forward for Kai to take, but the vampire jumped back as if he had been burnt.
"NO! KEEP IT AWAY!" He all but screamed, startling everyone. Realizing this, Kai straightened up and cleared his throat. "S-Sorry, I'm allgeric to garlic." He added nervously. Something flashed in Zane's eyes, but it went unnoticed as he took a step back and put the dish down.
"I apologize, I didn't know that."
"It's alright, no harm done." He dismissed and started backing up towards the door. "Look, this has been fun, but I've gotten better places to be than this dump." He huffed, knowing that it was a lie, but any place would be better than being near that dish of death or this teen who was making Kai more and more uneasy.
"I understand, but if you happen to change your mind the front desk can pro-" Zane started, only to be cut off when the brunette suddenly bolted away and out of the gym. Zane sighed heavily and got to work cleaning up his workstation and packing up the meal he made for later. After gathering up his things and bidding his classmates goodbye, Zane began the walk home, taking time to enjoy the warmth from the setting sun and evening breeze.
Halfway through his commute, but pale teen pulled out his mobile and made a call.
The person picked up after the first ring and Zane spoke coldly and as emotionless like a robot.
"I have found him."...
((Here’s the more detailed version of what’s going down in the Non-human au. Kai’s design has also changed a bit from when I first drew him a while ago.))
Zane Julien
Zane becomes a golden nindroid.
After the overlord was defeated for the second time and Zane rebuilt himself, something was different. He still had his element, but some of the gold power was there as well.
During his time at Chen’s, the golden power solidified and bits of gold started to grow out of his body, eventually stopping but he now had unremovable bits of gold sticking out of his body.
He can’t quite access the power in the elements, but sometimes certain parts will light up with the elements of his friends (eg. one of the bits of gold sparking electricity or setting itself on fire). His ice element has also become more powerful because of this, sometimes he accidentally freezes things though.
He isn’t quite alone in this new form though.
Kai Smith
Kai becomes an Anacondrai.
When Skylor and Kai had been caught by Chen, just before the spell is said, Chen decides to be ‘generous’, because he did make Skylor so happy. He gets his cultists to tattoo an anacondrai on Kai, allowing him the ‘honour’ of turning into an anacondrai.
As an anacondrai, Kai would look similar to all of the regular anacondrai warriors, except for some more reddish scales in places and a frill of fire (like Aspheera) he can choose to have on or off.
Cole Brookstone
Cole becomes a ghost dragon.
It’s a personal head canon that all ghost dragons were once ghosts that had gone insane and turned into dragons as a result. During the battle against the preeminent, Cole has to force this transformation wither to save himself or someone else. By the time he turned back, there was a few permanent additions to his new form.
He had wings, horns, claws and a tail, his teeth were sharper and sometimes his eyes would flash red. He could breathe a ghost-fire like substance. He was a bit more resistant to water now, but not by much.
After the day of the departed, the rift of return is unable to make Cole human again due to his ghost dragon transformation. But, it does make him a bit more solid and help with his disappearing issue.
Jay Walker
Jay becomes a tiger widow hybrid.
He barely notices as he’s dangling over the edge of a cliff with the others that the tiger widow’s fangs graze his leg. Then he doesn’t have much time to dwell on it as Nadakahn and his pirates snatch him away.
The transformation happens over a few days on Misfortune’s Keep, only making his time there worse. he grows dark brown and stripy fur all over his body, six extra eyes, two extra pairs of arms, claws, fangs and venom.
After the final wish, he thought everything would go back to normal. But the changes just started again
Nya Smith
Nya becomes a djinn.
After being forced to marry Nadakahn and Delara being revived through her, Nadakahn used his newly found powers to begin her transformation into a djinn. When the tiger widow venom was used, she wasn’t ‘djinn enough’ to survive the venom yet, so Jay still had a reason to make his final wish.
She now has four arms, orange skin and a wispy djinn tail. Due to her legs being replaced by the djinn tail, she now has to float everywhere. She also has djinn abilities, such as being able to teleport and grant wishes, though these wishes often go wrong unintentionally and Nya hates granting them.
Like Jay, the final wish didn’t completely reverse the effects of her transformation, instead making it start over.
Lloyd Garmadon
Lloyd becomes a dragoni.
When he goes down into the oni cloud with Garmadon, the oni energy in the cloud starts reacting with his oni blood. The transformation starts a few days after the oni are defeated. His oni traits started surfacing, his dragon traits doing the same to retain balance.
He grew wings, a tail, two extra arms, dragon claws, oni teeth and horns. He gained black markings over his hands and arms and gold markings on his face and torso. Scales and fur pop up in patches over his body, mostly with green, gold or black in colouring.
The transformation isn’t quick or easy, but once it’s done, Lloyd is left looking a lot more like ‘god’s grandson’ then he did before.
If you happen to be reading this, i’m sorry to say that this will be my last post I make on ninjaheadcanons; that being said, remember me for what I did then and not what I’ll be remembered for now.
I mean, hey, if i’m being sentenced for a crime I may as well pled my case, right?
I do not condone any Lloyd ships nor do I support them, I never have.
When I first started this blog I did every single request that went into my inbox. Every single one. Wether it made me uncomfortable or not.
Why did I do it??
Cause I can’t say no to people. As silly as it sounds, I can’t and still can’t say no. That’s just who I am. It wasn’t until I finally drew the line did I start standing up against the ships I am not comfortable with.
And I'm going to be completely honest, I write for things I don't want to all the time. Whether it's Lloyd related or not, a good portion of the time I have written for things that make me uncomfortable.
Why? Because it made people happy. And that is all I ever wanted. By answering requests ANY request good or bad, It made people smile. I wanted to make people happy and I hope that I was able to do so❤️
And as for the transphobic thing, I AM A TRANS MALE; If I had written anything remotely transphobic, it must have been misconstrued.
There's so much more I want to say to you all; to all those who have supported me since the begin. New or old. You matter and you are all my friends and to some you are even family. You have made everything so amazing❤️❤️❤️
I should probably say that I’m not leaving cause of that list. I said, in the beginning, I write HCs because it was fun for me and unfortunately, it’s not enjoyable as it once was.
I did have so much fun though! It was so nice to be able to talk with you all and have conversations about au and all different kinds of headcanons!❤️❤️
I just thought I should address those things as I have gotten a ton of questions about it.
I’ve been planning on making this post for awhile but, thought that I should probably do it early.
This is my final goodbye, my friends.
Thank you for everything -Grim Valentine🌻
Even at night and covered in a century's worth of dust, the Ballroom glittered with radiance. The full moon brightly illuminated the stained glass windows in a way the sunlight never could, filling the world with colored splashes of silver-like liquid opals. The dragon design on the ceiling glowed with light, giving the illusion that the dragon was flying overhead. Given the realism, Kai had to remind himself it was only glass. The hairs on the back of his neck prickled as each step took him closer to the foreboding staircase.
He froze in front of the staircase, gazing up the spiraling black stairs and the veils of shadows consuming it.
He took a hesitant first step and then another until he broke into a run, refusing to look back. He refused to stop, even as the staircase spiraled and the darkness, if possible, grew darker. When he reached the top, a long corridor, illuminated only by the faint moonlight, greeted him. He hesitated as he took in the dark hallway. The design was similar to the hallways that led to the east wing, except one wall was made of clear windows and the other looked like a balcony overlooking the ballroom.
The corridor's windows were not stained glass.
Instead, they were covered by tattered curtains that must've once been red or blue at some point. Time, age, and dust had darkened the curtains to black and brown. In addition, unlike the vine-like wood carving in the rest of the manor, the pillars and railings of this balcony were made of metal. There were flowing, intricate swirls in heart-shaped interlocking patterns. The pillars carved in the shape of wingless dragons, connected by their tails and noses.
Dust caked the floors and glass, creating a heavy fog over the windows.
Shadows danced everywhere, making it too dark to even see where the corridor went. Despite that, Kai pressed onward, determined not to let anything hinder his resolve. After what felt like an eternity, he finally approached an enormous door crafted from white birch with the engraving of a stunning dragon. Tiny dark grey crystals were embedded into the wood, forming scales, glowing emeralds made the eyes, and smoothed onyx formed the claws.
The carving looked so real that Kai had to bite back a scream.
Brushing aside the last strands of fear he felt entering the Dragon Lord's quarters uninvited, Kai grabbed the large door knockers and pushed the heavy doors open. He cursed his small stature when they didn't budge. He tried again and managed to push the door open a small crack. Once it was large enough for him to fit through, he slid his slim form through the door and jumped when the door shut behind him. He turned to scan the room and his eyes widened as he was overcome by a sense of déjà vu.
Shredded tapestries, caked in dust, hung everywhere.
Broken furniture pieces scattered across the dark blue carpet. Sheets, grey from age, covered the table and chairs in the corner. Another covered an enormous wardrobe sat in the corner. The only thing that looked in prime shape was the enormous canopy bed in the corner and a blank sheet of silk hanging on the wall. Unlike the rest of the room, it was clean silver and formed a veil covering what looked like a large indent in the wall. Curiosity getting the better of him, the teen crept through the room with the stealth of a ninja.
His steps were graceful and careful, avoiding each piece of broken furniture or anything that would make a noise.
When he came to the curtain, he leaned against the wall and carefully lifted the sheet to peek inside. A glass case brushed against his fingertips, further engaging his curiosity. With a harsh pull, he pulled down the rest of the silk, kicking up clouds of dust. He covered his mouth and choked on the thick particles until they finally settled. His eyes bulged at the sight of the cloth's secret. An enormous, stunning painting. It was about as tall as Kai and the image so realistic that Kai swore he was looking at a colored photograph.
The pine border and the glass case shielded the ancient object from the air, moisture, and anything else that would try to damage it.
Stunned by the fine craftsmanship, Kai's fingers gently graced the surface of the glass, hoping to touch the object. The setting greatly resembled a throne room of some sort. Two cerulean curtains framed each side and, in the background, stood a tall, lean man of middle-age with neat black hair and grey eyes. Next to him stood a slightly shorter woman with dramatically long raven hair and brilliant green eyes dressed in dark grey. Both of them were dressed like royalty and they were holding hands.
The foreground was even more impressive.
Standing before the royal couple was a little girl about a year or two younger than Lloyd and to her right stood a teenager just a little bit older than Kai and Nya. Kai's eyes rested on each one, admiring their beauty and wondering who they must've been in life. Once his eyes fell on the teenage prince, however, his breath caught in his throat and his eyes nearly bulged out of his skill. Brilliant green eyes that looked like stunning emeralds met his amber ones.
He took a step back in shock, stumbling over a broken chair in his haste.
The black hair, elegant features, perfect posture, muscular physique, and black dragon-shaped armor looked familiar but the eyes were the true answer. Kai shakily looked up, unable to tear his gaze away from those brilliant, sharp, green eyes. They were so mysterious and powerful yet carried a secret kindness. He recognized those eyes as the same eyes that belonged to the mystery man in his dreams. He got to his feet, only to fall backward, stumbling over a jerky step, and grunted when he hit the floor.
He hissed as pain rushed up to his side and back.
His mind was dominated by confusion and uncertainty. One answer led to a thousand new questions. His heart hammered in his chest as his mind raced, torn between leaving now while he was still undiscovered or staying to learn the truth behind what he just saw. The sight of a sudden flash of faint light behind him sent his heart into his throat. His back stiffened as he froze in fear. When no sound, yells, or movement was heard, he slowly turned to look over his shoulder and blinked in surprise.
Something was glowing a dim purple in the corner on an elegant nightstand.
Ignoring his pains, he got to his feet, wondering how he missed such a sight. The dim purple light brightened even more as he approached it, illuminating the balcony and the nightstand rested on. It was only when he was close enough to touch it did he see the object was a red candle, more beautiful and bizarre than any he'd ever seen. The candle was a bright crimson red with a purple flame burning away. It was sat in a black, metal base with some strange symbols engraved into the metal.
He was certain the candle must be been much taller because the candle was only just longer than his finger.
The still melting red wax was pooling down the nightstand and onto the dusty floor. It looked like freshly spilled blood. The small purple flame seemed to grow weaker, but it was still strong enough to burn. It was the most beautiful thing Kai had ever seen. A small click caught Kai's attention, and his eyes widened as the symbols engraved into the metal bottom holding the candle started to glow, and out of nowhere music started to play. The music flooded the room.
Enthralled by the object, Kai's hands moved independently of his mind to carefully cup the lovely object in his palms.
The melting wax was warm but for some reason, it didn't hurt him. His eyes remained transfixed on the flame as it flickered and danced. Music filled his ears, echoing around him like it did in his dreams. His body and mind were no longer his, spellbound by the object for reasons he didn't understand. His eyes closed as he absorbed the music. The image of roses curled at his feet, black wings surrounded him, a glittering castle formed on the edge of the hillside as words started to play.
Music and words flowed through his mind, soothing his heart.
Each word echoed in the air like the fluttering of wings. So familiar yet he couldn't quite put his finger on it. The melody curved and arched like a graceful bird rising higher and higher into the air, then fell like the rise and fall of the sea in a timeless rhythm. Suddenly, Kai's eyes flashed open. Realization struck him like a slap across the face, returning him to reality, and more unanswered questions flooded his mind. The song, the words, and the images all spiraled together until the world seemed to fall apart.
He suddenly felt hollow, as if he'd suddenly awoken only to discover everything he ever thought was real was nothing more than a dream.
The dream, the song, the music. Now he knew where he had heard it before. They were the words to his poem. The song was the same song his prince sang to him in his dreams. His entire world suddenly froze. He didn't remember the loud sound of wings behind him or feel the candle slip from his trembling hands. He was suddenly thrown back to reality by a brutally sharp pound to his side, sending him flying across the room and crashing against the floor of the room.
Pain exploded from his side and he was unable to stop the scream that ripped from his throat.
He opened his mouth to glare and yell at his assailant, but froze instead. The Dragon Lord flew across the room, his wings expanding like a shield as he threw himself to his knees, panting in shock. His eyes were fixed on the candle he cradled in his hands which he held with tenderness and care. Fear and terror were vivid in his eyes and he painstakingly checked the red candle for any damage. Once he was satisfied, he exhaled a sigh of relief as the symbols stopped glowing, silencing its song.
Gently, he placed it back on its table. Kai hesitantly got to his feet.
He tried to move, only to be paralyzed when the Lord turned his attention to him. Every ounce of affection Kai had seen earlier in the Dragon Lord's face transformed into hate and malice. A growl tore itself from its throat, his fangs perturbed from his lips like a snarling beast and his eyes burned with anger. They were no longer the brilliant green orbs of a human or the silted pupils of a dragon he'd grown used to. No, anger had changed them, transformed them into the eyes of a ferocious beast.
Kai's entire demeanor shattered at the sight.
He backed himself against the wall and his hands flew behind him as if trying to push it back, anything to get as far away from the dragon before him. Tremor racked his entire body and, for the first time since he arrived at the castle, Kai truly feared for his life.
"You." The dragon hybrid said with a voice that was all breath and venom, so full of rage that he couldn't form a complete sentence. The teen before him opened his mouth to speak but no sound came out. Kai's voice died in his throat and he remained a prisoner in his own body.
"Do. You. Have. Any. Idea. WHAT YOU ALMOST DID?" The Dragon Lord roared so loud Kai was certain people from the town could hear it. He started moving towards the teen and Kai tried to move back, only to sink deeper into the wall.
"I-I-I'm sorry! I didn't—"
"Get out." The dragon demanded in a dangerously low voice.
"What?" Kai asked without thinking and instantly regretted it.
"GET OUT!" The Dragon Lord exploded. His claws suddenly expanded and bolts of gold energy exploded from his claws, striking random places throughout the room, hitting furniture, the walls, and the floor, leaving only black scorch marks in their wake. Kai screamed. Gold, lava-like energy exploded before his very eyes. Focused purely on his own safety, his body sprang from its position on the wall. He barely dodged the blast of energy that struck the wall and he broke into a sprint.
Almost instantly, Cole calmed down, then fell into despair, finally realizing that he may have destroyed his chance with Kai.
The brunette reached the stairway and grabbed his cloak. He rushed down the stairs, wrapping the cloak around him and bursting past a confused Jay and Ronin.
"Wh- Where are you going?" Jay asked.
"Promise or no promise, I can't stay here another minute!" Kai snarled, but the terror was clear in his eyes.
"Oh no, wait, please! Please wait!" Ronin pleaded, but Kai slammed the door behind him. Jay and Ronin both bow their heads in sadness. Outside, Kai bolted from the doors to the castle and leaped through the gates without thinking. He didn't care where he was running or noticed the unfamiliar woods flying past him as he ran. His mind forced his body to obey, focused on one thing and one thing only. Getting as far away from the Dragon Lord as he possibly could.
Not once did he look back...
Kai didn't stop running until exhaustion finally caught up with his body and his knees gave away beneath him. He crashed to the ground with only his shaky arms to hold him up. His lungs exploded from lack of air and his breathing was in heavy pants. His heart thundered against his ribs, causing pains in his chest as he tried desperately to breathe. Finally, he leaned against a tree and collapsed. Once he calmed down, his situation and what his actions had caused came flooding back to him.
His eyes bulged and his breath hitched as the memory hit him with the force of a tidal wave.
His hands wove into his hair and yanked the tresses as he buried his face in his knees. How could he have been so stupid? He growled in frustration and punched the ground next to him. Sighing in defeat, he forced himself to his feet and braced against a tree until his body had recovered enough for him to walk and started back towards the castle. The direction he was headed confused him. He knew he should be terrified. He knew he should be looking for a way back to town, back home to his siblings, instead of prison and a possible death sentence.
But oddly, he didn't feel like he was returning to that prison or an apology, just the opposite actually.
He mentally kicked himself and pounded his skull with his fists for letting his curiosity get the better of him. Had he learned nothing from all of the times he had been grounded or punished for sneaking off and getting into things he shouldn't? All the servants had told him straight out what was in the West Wing and that Cole didn't like anyone in his private chamber. Of course, the Dragon Lord would be furious at him for invading his privacy like that!
If their roles were reversed and Cole had entered his room when he wasn't there, he'd have been pretty pissed too.
Nya had given him a black eye once for sneaking into her room and going through her stuff once. He also dropped the candle, obviously something of great importance to the Dragon Lord. Kai buried his face in his hands. He may have just damaged his and Cole's relationship beyond repair because he couldn't control his pride and childish curiosity. Cole's chilling words echoed in his mind once again. He knew there was no way he was getting off with just a smack on the wrist this time.
Cole would not hurt him, but Kai would no doubt be locked in the tower for this, or at the very least he'd get a slap.
He took a breath and sighed as a harsh gust of wind suddenly chilling him right to the bone, reminding him where he was. He looked down at his attire. Silk and leather were clearly not the best clothing for the approaching winter. But that was the least of his problems. He sighed and started down the path towards the castle. He made a severe mistake so he was going to do this with dignity and accept his punishment like a man, and, if he had to, he would beg Cole's forgiveness.
Kai was not letting this end before it even had a chance to start.
"My, my, how very noble of you." Something suddenly hissed. Kai froze in mid-step. He swore he'd felt his heart stop beating at the sound of a stranger's voice. It sounded cultured and refined, but too cruel to be considered polite.
"Who's there?" Kai demanded as he whirled around, meeting only with the wind. A sudden dread chilled him to the bone followed by a low chuckle, rich with amusement. Kai bolted around again, and this time, someone emerged from the darkness of the forest. Red robes draped the figure from head to toe, making his face all but invisible. His eyes were hidden beneath his hood but wisps of black hair peeked out from beneath it.
"Who are you?!" He demanded again with more bravado. The figure swooped as if to vanish, only to reappear in front of him and shove him hard against a tree, knocking the wind from his lungs. Kai thrashed but the figure grabbed his wrists and pinned them at his sides.
"My, my, feisty little thing aren't you?" The stranger laughed in amusement, a lecherous smile curled across his face. "I can certainly see why Cole's taken such an interest in you." He teased, richly amused as if entertaining a child. Kai shivered at the perverted tone in the man's voice and pulled at his wrists again but the figure's grip was like iron.
"Get off me! Let go!" He thundered, showing no fear.
"Ah, so you do have some fight still in you." His smile widened to a smirk like a predator who knew it had its prey cornered. "That is good, very good, it's such a shame Cole wasn't strong enough to just take you when he had the chance." He said as a wicked gleam filled the man's eyes and Kai shivered in horror, recognizing that look. It was the same lust he saw in Morro's eyes every time he looked at him. "You'll make a lovely consort." The figure smirked, leaning forward to claim those fiery lips as his own.
"Over my dead body!" Kai protested furiously. Before the man could respond, Kai kneed the man in the stomach. The stranger howled in pain and freed Kai's wrists in surprise. Taking advantage of his sudden freedom, Kai elbowed his assailant in the back then gave him a roundabout kick to the side, sending the man crashing into a tree. When the figure fell to the ground, Kai broke into a run and sprinted as fast as he could away from the stranger.
He prayed for all he was worth that he was going in the right direction.
"Fiery little devil." The stranger groaned as he pulled himself to his feet. Under different circumstances, he'd be furious at the boy for such vulgar treatment but instead found himself amused and intrigued. "A beautiful desert rose with some fire." He chuckled. Cole always did like exotic gems. He chuckled darkly at that thought. Unfortunately, it seemed the Dragon Lord's contamination was already running too deep. "Such a shame, such a lovely specimen deserves far better than to suffer the fate that befalls the Dragon Lord's love, if he'd only chosen me, he would've made a delightful bed mate, so beautiful, his fire in my bed, what a waste." He growled at his misfortune, before chanting a dark spell.
The wind howled and the ground shook as the spell took form and the shadows spiraled together in summoning.
Black and sticky green tresses spiraled together, revealing a monstrous creature crafted of shadows. Its jaws snapped with hunger and dripped with saliva. Its master smirked at his accomplishment.
"Go and kill the boy." He ordered. The creature didn't need to be told twice and, with a powerful leap, jumped over its master and darted after its prey. "It really is so unfortunate such a beautiful creature such as yourself had to die, but I can't possibly have Cole thinking you love him, can I? That would just ruin everything!" He laughed to himself like a mad man. His laughter echoed throughout the forest like a swarm of scavenging ravens taking flight...

Kai smirked as he loaded his shopping basket with dozens of tubs crickets and other creepy crawlies. He was currently hanging out in the reptile section of the Animal Crackers pet store and clearing all their shelves of insects. The reason for this was a large prank he and Lloyd were planning to pull off on their science teacher. While he still found his roommates, Kai had to admit that Lloyd's hidden devious personality was inspiring and a cause for caution.
Kai would rather have the blond prankster as an ally than a foe.
They had come up with this prank to get back at their science teacher for all the bad grades he gave them purely out of spite. Even when they studied and did well on a test or a project he still failed them and when Kai confronted him about this the teacher admitted that he just didn't like them. He thought Kai was a gothic freak and that Lloyd was a sad loser who would probably only get a job behind the counter at a fast-food place. Not only that but he was incredibly creepy to his female co-workers and rude to his female students.
If he saw a girl with their skirts even a little bit above the knee he would give them a detention.
He even did this to students outside his classes. When they learned this Jay tried to report the teacher to the school but their complaints were ignored. The only thing to change was that the science teacher started to fail Jay's science projects as well. That was when Kai and Lloyd decided to take matters into their own hands. At first, Kai wanted to use his powers to secretly torment the mind of the older man while he slept, but Lloyd's suggestion was much more fun.
It was no secret that the science teacher had severe entomophobia, the fear of insects.
It was all Lloyd's idea. He said that they would buy as many bugs as they could, fill the teacher's house with them, and secretly record him as he woke up and freaked out at the sight of all the bugs that were filling up his home. He and Kai were split up in the city buying as many bugs as they could while Jay went to get them some small cameras to record with. This was his third pet store and Lloyd had just texted telling him he was heading to his fourth now.
The prank would be set up tonight and would activate early in the morning.
Without much effort, Kai convinced his roommates to let him sneak into the house to set up the cameras and release the insects. He could easily fly in and out of the house like a bat and sneak all the items in without being detected, not that Jay or Lloyd knew that. After Kai was certain that he had everything he needed, he rounded the corner of the reptile sector to leave. He began to pass the toy aisle when he suddenly froze. There was a man crouched down in front of him examining some squeaky cat toys.
Although he could see his face, Kai already knew very well who this person was just from looking at his back.
The figure seemed to feel Kai's eyes on him because he stood up and slowly turned around to face the brunette, revealing Cole's shocked face.
"Kai?" He gasped when he saw his one-night stand again after over six weeks. "Wow, it's been uh it's been a long time, you look... the same?" He stammered, unsure what he was supposed to say in this situation.
"Thanks," Kai replied but it was very stiff and robotic. They stood there in silence for a while until Cole couldn't take it anymore.
"I thought you were gonna call me?" He demanded as he took a step forward, but a glare from Kai stopped him from going any further.
"I thought I put you in stronger chains?" The brunette retorted, still maintaining his glare as another uncomfortable began to form. That awkwardness was cut short, however, when a young woman around Cole's age suddenly approached them. She was a tan-skinned girl who seemed around Cole's age with teal blue eyes. She has a micro fringe and long golden curls with a purple hairclip on her side. She wore a cyan crop-top, light blue denim capri pants, and white flats.
Her makeup consisted of lavender-colored eyeshadow and mauve purple lipstick.
They say don't judge a book by its cover, but Kai could already see everything about her. He could tell that she considered herself to be one of the most beautiful and popular girls at whatever school she went to. He almost growled at the obvious drama diva princess. He saw what she thought she was more deserving and better than everyone else. He wouldn't be surprised if her parents bought her everything she ever wanted. Kai glared at the girl that he knew would get nowhere in life after school finished.
He almost allowed himself a small smirk at the thought.
"This pet store is so fucking stinky! Can we leave yet?" She complained loudly to Cole before she finally saw Kai. "Oh, hi there!" She smiled, showing off all her perfectly white teeth as she walked around to Cole's side and looped her arm around him, making sure to look Kai in the eye the entire time. Cole looked like a deer in headlights as his eyes darted back and forth between the girl and Kai. If he thought it was awkward before it was worse now.
How was he supposed to talk to his one-night stand about his new girlfriend?
When he saw that they were both looking at him expectedly, Cole finally snapped back to reality and plastered on a weak, worried smile.
"Uh, Kai meet Lucy, Lucy this is Kai." He introduced nervously.
"Charmed I'm sure." Lucy smiled at the brunette expectedly.
"No, you'd know if you were." Kai snapped, very unimpressed. Lucy paused for a second and Kai suspected that that was the first time anyone had ever spoken to her like that. Her disbelief changed to anger though as her smile melted into a disgusted scowl.
"How do you know this... person?" She asked her boyfriend as she gave Kai a judgemental once over, her tone implying that Kai was something she scraped off the bottom of her high heels.
"We were... friends?" Cole asked, not sure how to explain his relationship with Kai. "We know each other from a past life." He suddenly said with a chuckle, hoping some humor would lighten the mood, but Lucy didn't look convinced.
"It's true," Kai replied, confusing the couple. Kai barely managed to suppress a smirk as he began to spin his tale. "He was a soldier and I was a slave freeing gypsy prostitute; after seeing the light he made a passionate plea to his comrades to do what was right for mankind and was immediately shot in the chest eighty-one times, and a week later I poisoned myself for unrelated reasons." He shrugged as if he just told them what groceries he was buying.
Both humans could only stare at him in silence.
Cole in wonder and awe while Lucy in concern and disgust.
"Well it has been... super interesting meeting you Kai but we should go." She said with a grimace before she began to head for the entrance. She stopped, however, when she realized that Cole hadn't moved and was still staring at Kai, with the brunette doing the same. "Puppy?" She whined in frustration, snapping out of his little trance.
"J-Just give me a minute, Lucy." He told his girlfriend and this caused Lucy to sigh loudly as if he had just asked her to find every giant bag of pet food and carry them all to the car by herself. Nevertheless, the blond teen listened to him and left to wait for him outside. Cole waited until he was sure they were alone before he turned back to Kai, who still looked calm, cool, and collected.
"So is that story true? I mean did we meet in a past life?" He asked in amazement.
"Do you think I'm a liar?" Kai glared, sounding very offended that Cole would think he was a liar.
"No...?" Cole replied, scared that anything he said would be the wrong thing.
"Good, I'm trying to sharpen my skills for an upcoming court appearance." The brunette smiled in satisfaction.
"So... wait! Is that... it- it was a lie? Is it a lie? Not a lie?" Cole stammered in confusion as his mind struggled to comprehend what Kai told him. Everything about the brunette intrigued and irritated Cole in ways he couldn't understand. There was something about Kai that was mysterious yet dangerous and Cole wanted to know what it was no matter what happened to him. As he stared into Kai's bright, almost glowing, amber eyes the human was suddenly flooded with a feeling he hadn't felt since he met Kai.
Before he realized what was happening, Cole suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Kai's both sides of his head intending to steal a kiss.
He quickly jumped back, however, when Kai suddenly hissed at him like an enraged, feral cat. Cole was so ashamed of himself that he failed to see the split-second flash of Kai's fangs before they vanished. Shooting the human an offended glare, the vampire turned on his heel and stormed off.
"I'm sorry! That was stupid of me!" Cole exclaimed in horror, scared that he had just blown his chance, as he began to chase after Kai. "Wait, it- it's not even serious with Lucy! I don't even like her!" He tried to explain as he kept glancing over his shoulder, worried that Lucy could show up any second.
"Don't you?" Kai scoffed. "She referred to you as her loyal mutt, which is pretty dominate; I know you like that." He smirked when he could almost feel Cole's blush.
"Yeah but it's not the same Kai, I seriously miss you." He insisted but Kai kept walking, not even giving Cole a second look. "Kai, I still have the chains!" He suddenly shouted and that finally made Kai stop in his tracks. Kai turned around and was surprised to see the manacles from their last meeting were still around Cole's legs just above his ankles. "I called a hundred locksmiths and none of them could figure out how to get these things off," Cole added but that didn't shock Kai.
Those chains were custom made in his home country and Kai had hidden the key after he had left Cole's bed.
The only way to remove the chains was to either get the key from Kai or track down the person who made them and get them to craft a new key.
"Yes, sure it's a little awkward when I go to the beach or when I go to the gym but h-honestly, I don't want them off; I like the way they make me feel, I like the way they jingle about when I dance; I think I love you, Kai Smith," Cole admitted, sounding truly sincere, but Kai couldn't tell whether he meant it or not. All his life Kai knew when people were lying to him from his family, his roommates, to people he met in the streets. But with Cole it was different.
No matter how much he tried he couldn't figure this human out and that both angered and scared him.
He wanted to understand why Cole was so unique, but he couldn't get too close until he knew what Cole's intentions were.
"Do you know what it's like to be shot in the chest eighty-one times?" The brunette suddenly asked, catching Cole off guard.
"What?" He asked in confusion. Of all the responses to his confession that was not one of them.
"Eighty-one bullets in your chest," Kai repeated as he started to approach the noirette, keeping his movements slow and deliberate. "It feels like your heart becomes a thousand fireworks, your body is merely a vessel for that one moment that lasts a fraction of a second before you perish but it feels like lifetimes." He whispered as he stared Cole dead in the eyes. "That is what love feels like." He finished as he placed a hand over Cole's rapidly beating heart.
"I-I-I don't know if I know what that feels like." Cole stammered, not fully processing what Kai was saying or the brunette's shoulders slumping slightly.
"Then you're not the man in the past life I thought you were." The vampire muttered, disappointment clear in his voice as he tore his amber eyes away from Cole's emeralds. This scared Cole, causing him to think Kai was going to vanish as he did all those weeks ago, only this time the noirette would never see him again.
"Okay, but I-"
"Why don't you call me when you know what love feels like?" Kai suggested with a small smirk and a wink as he stepped out of Cole's personal space.
"D-Does that mean you want me to get shot in the chest o-or is it a metaphor?" He asked, trying to understand what Kai was talking about. It looked like Kai was about to answer until Cole's phone suddenly started ringing, the ringtone being Jingle Bells played by barking dogs.
"Your owner is calling you." Kai chuckled as Cole pulled out the phone to check the caller ID. It was Lucy but he wasn't in the mood to talk to her. After he declined the call, Cole looked up and suppressed an irritated groan when he saw that Kai had seemingly vanished into thin air again like the last time. The human could only hope that that wasn't the last time he ever saw Kai again. After paying for his items, Kai exited the store and his eyes scanned the area around the entrance until he found his target.
Cole's girlfriend, Lucy.
She was standing by the edge of the car park, smoking a cigarette as she impatiently waited for Cole. She had tried calling him a few times but the call went to voicemail. Adjusting the grip on his bags, Kai narrowed his eyes and walked over to her. When she saw him, Lucy glared at him and blew a cloud of smoke into his face. Kai didn't even blink as he pulled something out of the bags and extended it towards her.
"I have a gift for you." He said as she reluctantly took the item from him. "I advice you to shorten it." He smirked before walking away and leaving her with even more questions. Lucy watched him leave for a moment before she turned to the item he had given her and it only confused her more. He had given her a long, black, and grey dog leash...
