The sound of firing guns rang in Bucky’s ears as he ran across the field, occasionally ducking into the yellowed grass and firing his own weapon. Small explosions of dirt from the enemy’s active assault sprayed across his army green uniform, filling his nose with the musky and spicy smells of the earth and gunpowder. His commanding officer shouted commands which were barely audible over the ringing in his ears.
Looking to the side, Bucky watched as one of his fellow soldiers was shot down. His eyes widened and heart raced as he began to panic. Never once since he enlisted had Bucky regretted joining the army, but now he was beginning to. He could have been home, relaxing and reading a book, or hanging out with his best friend Steve Rogers, maybe he could have been going out on a nice date with a beautiful girl, but no, he chose to join the front lines and potentially lose his life for his country.
As Bucky quickly got on his knees, firing his gun, a large wave of pain flowed from his chest. He had been hit by an enemy bullet. ‘No,’ he thought, lying on the ground as his vision began to fade, ‘It can’t end here. Steve, I’m sorry..’ Everything went black but lit up again just as quickly. Bucky looked around, trying to recognise his surroundings.
To his horror he finally did.
Bucky Barnes was back in a Hydra Headquarters, strapped into that cursed machine while scientists read words from a book. His head hurt so much and his chest felt like it was on fire as he struggled against his bindings, screaming in agony. His feet slammed against the metal footrest and he shut his eyes, wanting to wake up from this horrible nightmare.
BANG BANG BANG
“Bucky?? Are you okay?? Open the door!”
The winter soldier opened his eyes, falling off of the bed as he woke up. He was back in his room in the Avengers’ tower, his dark gray sheets around him and disconnected from the rest of the bed. From outside, he could hear the sounds of fireworks being shot into the sky by some of the neighbors. The knocking on the door just added to the unwanted noise as the voice of Steve Rogers commanded F.R.I.D.A.Y. do unlock the door and let him in.
He then entered the room and rushed to Bucky’s side. “Hey, are you okay, I heard you crying out in your sleep.” Steve said, his hand squeezing his best friend’s shoulder in a comforting manner. He then realized what was going on. “Was it the fireworks?” Bucky was shaking underneath his wrinkled sheets and didn’t respond. He was too afraid to speak, even to act because he didn’t know what he would do out of pure instinct.
“The war is over, Bucky, and Hydra isn’t going to get you. You don’t have to worry anymore. I’m here. You’re safe.” Bucky wanted to believe those words, and for the most part he did, however his time behind enemy lines had messed him up. The sound of fireworks that he used to run toward as a child he now backed away from, as he remembered the sounds of battle and visions of fallen soldiers filled his mind. Bucky didn’t want to seem weak, but here he was about to cry like a child over fireworks of all things. He used to love this time of year, but now he could only stay in his room and pray for it to be over for the next few days.
“Do you want to talk about your dream, Buck?” Asked Steve, looking worriedly at his friend who shook his head. “I.. I don’t feel well. I think I’m just going to try and sleep again and skip the celebration tomorrow.” Steve was saddened by this. Sure, he wanted his friend to be okay, but he really wanted to spend Independence Day with him as well. “All right. You know where I am if you need me.” Steve gave Bucky a tight hug before exiting the room, leaving Bucky alone with the sounds of distant fireworks.
The next day, the Avengers’ Tower was alive with the hustle and bustle of the Fourth of July. Tony and Steve were arguing over the last donut with red, white, and blue sprinkles, Natasha, Clint, and Peter were setting up decorations, and Bruce Banner worked on some new fireworks for the celebration later that night. (Y/n) (L/n), Vision, and Wanda Maximoff both watched the chaos going on from the kitchen while preparing food for the grill and table.
“I don’t really understand the concept of Independence Day.” Said Wanda softly, looking at the other two in the room with her. The bickering between the co-leaders of the Avengers stopped and they looked toward the young witch in surprise. “Really?” Asked Tony who took another bite of his donut much to Steve’s annoyance. “Do you want to understand it?”
Wanda nodded and Steve took the opportunity to delve into his patriotic passion as two of the three decorators rolled their eyes. “Look what you’ve started.” Said Clint, his shoulders shaking with a suppressed laugh as Wanda struggled to keep up with the history lecture that she had unknowingly asked for.
(Y/n) looked around suddenly, noticing something, or rather someone, was missing. “Hey Steve, where’s Bucky?” Steve stopped talking about the Revolutionary War long enough to answer her. “He was.. Having some trouble sleeping last night and isn’t feeling well so he’s spending the day in his room.” (Y/n) frowned in concern. She hadn’t known her boyfriend wasn’t feeling well and felt guilty that she hadn’t gone to check on him at all. “Vision, you and Wanda can handle the rest of the food, right?” She asked the mechanical avenger who nodded and motioned for her to be off.
It didn’t take long for (Y/n) to reach Bucky’s room and when she did, she knocked gently on the door. “Bucky? It’s me, (Y/n), are you okay? I heard you weren’t feeling well.” From beyond the door she heard a rustle, as if something or someone was moving around, but no one answered the door. “Babe?” She tried again, hoping he would open the door so she didn’t have to. (Y/n) wondered if maybe he was asleep, but was proven wrong when there was a soft reply. “Don’t worry, I’m okay doll, you can go back downstairs. Go enjoy the festivities.”
There was a hint of sadness in his voice and (Y/n) couldn’t help feeling bad about his condition. “I’m coming in.” She said, opening the door before Bucky could tell her not to bother. There he was, looking healthy as a horse and getting up to try and stop the door from opening. (Y/n) was confused. “Bucky? What’s going on? Are you okay?”
Bucky knew he had been caught in his lie. He invited her to sit on his bed, thinking out what to say next. (Y/n) looked at him expectantly and suddenly spoke up. “You’re not actually sick, are you?” She said that in a monotone voice, sounding a bit upset. Bucky felt awful. The two of them hadn’t even been together for a year yet, and he didn’t want her to feel obligated to throw away a fun holiday like this for his sake.
“No. No, I’m not actually sick.” He confessed, sitting on the edge of the bed and looking down. “Then why aren’t you joining us downstairs? We’re going to start up the grill outside on the balcony, maybe get a campfire up and running, and watch the fireworks. Doesn’t that sound fun?”
It did sound fun, but that’s what made Bucky so sad. After everything he had done, why should he be out there celebrating America’s independence after he worked for Hydra to take over his beloved home country. Why should he celebrate freedom after he had taken so many innocent lives?
A tight hug snapped him out of his damp mood and his eyes widened to feel tears falling on the back of his hands. He hadn’t even realized he had started crying. Furiously, Bucky wiped at the tears, trying to get rid of them and toughen up.
“It’s okay, you can cry. I won’t judge you.” Said (Y/n) softly, hugging him tighter and nuzzling her face into the crook of his neck. Bucky’s wall of emotions shattered and he broke down. Turning around to face her, he held her in his arms and cried freely. He couldn’t form coherent words as he tried to explain to her why he hid from everyone. She didn’t say anything, trying to understand him as he finally managed to calm down.
“I just don’t feel welcome. I’ve hurt so many people, heck I’ve killed so many people. I killed Tony’s parents and even tried to kill all of you at one point or another. I don’t deserve to be celebrating with all of you.” He looked at (Y/n) who looked at him with sad eyes.
“You deserve to be with us as much as anyone else, Bucky. First of all, you didn’t have a choice in the matter during your time with Hydra because you were brainwashed. Second, you’re forgetting who all you’re celebrating with. Tony has indirectly killed thousands of people with the weapons he used to manufacture, Natasha used to be a Russian spy, Clint is technically an assassin, Wanda used to work for Hydra, Bruce is literally a green radioactively-made monster who can take down giant flying carnivorous alien worms,Thor has killed thousands of people because he’s a small-g god, and I work as an agent for SHIELD. You fit right in with us!”
Bucky laughed softly, falling back into her arms. “I guess you’re right..” He murmured but his faint smile didn’t last. “Do fireworks bother you?” Guessed (Y/n), a small puzzle being put together in her mind. “Is that why you had trouble sleeping?” Bucky nodded, feeling a bit stupid for admitting it. “They.. give me nightmares and flashbacks from the war.. And Hydra.. And they keep on going for days because of the Fourth of July.”
“If there was a way to make the noise disappear from the fireworks, would you go out to see them?” Bucky nodded. “I love fireworks.” (Y/n) smiled happily. “I’ll be right back.” She left his side and Bucky immediately missed her warmth and comfort. He wondered what she could be doing. Bucky prayed that she wasn’t going to tell the others and hugged his knees to his chest anxiously.
When (Y/n) returned, she was carrying a pair of large black headphones. “What?” Bucky asked in confusion. “They’re noise canceling headphones. I use them sometimes when I go to the firing range for practice. Try them on.” He hesitantly put it on, adjusting the ears to fit his head and he was shocked when all the noise from his room and downstairs disappeared. It was like he was just alone with his thoughts with nothing to interrupt him.
(Y/n) tried to speak to him but he could hear her. She tried again and this time he told her he couldn’t understand what she was saying, making her laugh as she took the headphones off. “It looks like they work.” Bucky hugged her tight, kissing her cheek happily. “Will you be joining us downstairs? You don’t have to if you don’t want to.” She assured him, the question lingering for a second as he considered the option for the first time in quite a while.
“I’ll be downstairs in a bit. I need to freshen up.” (Y/n) smiled happily and gave him a quick peck on the lips. “Alright then! I’ll see you later!” As she left Bucky’s room, he watched her retreating figure with a smile. What did he do to become so lucky that he could have a girl like her?
By the time he had gone downstairs, everyone was already on the balcony. The smell of grilling chicken, burgers, and steak wafted through the air as well as the sound of laughter. When he appeared in the doorway, Steve was the first to catch sight of him, looking at his best friend with a look of absolute shock, not expecting to see him out and about that evening.
“Ay, Manchurian Candidate, nice to see you!” Called Tony, waving at him from his spot next to his wife, Pepper. (Y/n) looked over at him and smiled as one of Clint’s daughters braided her hair. “There are some sodas and beer in the cooler if you’d like one.” Said Wanda as she drank a Pepsi beside Vision on the couch. Peter was already over at the cooler, grabbing two juice pouches, one for him and one for another one of Clint’s kids.
As Bucky got settled down nervously between (Y/n) and Steve, his fellow soldier patted him on the shoulder. “I’m happy you could join us, Buck.”
“You can thank (Y/n) for that. She convinced me that I was welcome.”
“You’re always welcome. The past is in the past so enjoy the present. It’s not like we have a time machine and can go back to when and where we came from.” Joked Steve and Bucky laughed.
Two hours later, the fireworks started. (Y/n) was seated comfortably in her boyfriend’s arms as they watched the colorful display in the night sky. Bucky looked down at her, the black headphones placed comfortably on his head and keeping away the loud sounds of the explosions.
“I love you, doll.” He murmured softly, nuzzling his face into her shoulder as she held onto him with a smile. “I love you too, Bucky. Happy Fourth of July.”

“Dad! The doll is right there! What are you doing??” Laughed (Y/n) as her father almost left his hiding space. “I have to get the mold thing up there!” He exclaimed, moving Rose out from beneath the table and trying to run passed the enemy. His attempt was unsuccessful as it started laughing like a maniac and he started losing HP. “I tried to tell you earlier, there’s another way there, you just have to go the other way!”
“Agh, dang it. Fine, we’ll do it your way.” Mark grumbled as he moved Rose away. Chaos ensued as after he got around the doll, the giant mannequin burst through the door. “AGH NO!!!” Cried the older YouTuber as he had the girl hide under a table.
(Y/n) was laughing, Mark jokingly telling her to be quiet. She only shook her head and decided to look at chat. There were a few people commenting how Rose reminded them a bit of (Y/n). The girl was confused but opted to ignore them, turning back to watch the game.
Mark finally got out of the room, shouting at the dolls to stop their insulting yammering, and looked over at his daughter. “You okay?” She nodded her head, smiling reassuringly at him. “Yup, I’m fine, just thinking about something. Oh look! Michael’s back!” Indeed he was, writing glowing, worried words on the wall for Rose to read.
As they walked through the house of memories, the two players started to put pieces together. “Okay, I’m pretty sure at this point that Michael is actually Ethan.” Commented Mark and (Y/n) nodded again. “I would be shocked if he wasn’t.” After defeating the crazy ghost girl, they fell even deeper into the world after being pushed away from harm by a male figure.
Both father and daughter were shaking with excitement and the girl pointed at the screen. “THAT’S ETHAN!! WE CALLED IT!! THAT’S ETHAN!!” Mark, after calming down a bit, made his way through the familiar territory, (Y/n) once again looked at the chat. She frowned as there were multiple comments saying similar things to the previous one, but with a little more added on.
“CraZGurl: Awww Mark and (Y/n) are so cute around each other! Their bond is like Rose and Ethan’s relationship!”
“MuddBoi: @CraZGurl FR! They do give off those vibes, don't they?”
“MyMain6Channel: It’s like watching real life versions of Rose and Ethan! <3”
“BuddiBuddy: Adorable (OwO)”
(Y/n) wondered what made them think that and spoke up. “Chat, as flattering as it is that you think Dad and I act cute around each other, I can guarantee that we aren’t like Rose and her dad in the game so stop saying that.” Mark didn’t really understand what she was talking about, but decided to keep quiet.
As the coded father and daughter ran through a mold infested cavern and away from the final boss, the comments continued to grow with the same relative message. However, these words fell upon distracted ears as the real life duo were off in their own little worlds. Mark’s mind was in auto pilot during the big fight and he just let his mind wonder.
“What would my life have been like if I never had a daughter?”
(Y/n) pointed out small details and provided some help while a question of her own floated around in her head. ‘What would my life be like if Dad just disappeared from my life? What if my story really was like Rose’s? Dad has been to the hospital many times for things, but what if something finally killed him? What would happen to me?’ She shook her head. ‘No, you idiot, don’t think that way. He’s tough, and even if something did happen to him, his friends have always been willing to help him out so I’d be fine.’
Mark and (Y/n) both watched as Miranda was defeated, and Rose held her dying father. It was a very emotional moment, and both Fischbachs were sad. “I’m so very proud of you. I love you, Rose.” spoke Ethan and (Y/n) felt her own dad’s arm wrap around her, bringing her closer into a partial hug.
“I love you too, dad.”
(Y/n) subconsciously read those words out loud, her voice barely a whisper as the screen faded to white. She looked over to her right to see her dad was looking at her with a smile. He hugged her tight, and while sharing that moment with him, she looked over once again at the comment stream. With a sigh, she spoke loud enough to be heard while her face was basically pressed against Mark’s chest.
“Don’t say that chat. I don’t want to think about losing my dad.” Mark, hearing this, looked over and read the messages. So that’s what she had been thinking about. He gave his daughter a protective squeeze and glared goofily at the camera. “Yeah, guys. As you can see I’m perfectly fine. Unless I’m not and I’m a ghost. Oooooohhhhh~” He rebukingly teased before tickling (Y/n) and smiling when she burst into laughter.
Mark knew that if something happened to him, his friends or his mom would take care of his daughter. Yes, his body was a little messed up at times, but it had been a while since anything major happened, so he wasn’t too worried about it. For the time being however, while he was still relatively healthy, he’d happily spend as much time with his little girl as possible.
As the final cut scene played through and the credits rolled, the two Fischbachs talked about their favorite parts of the game. “I think there were a few aspects I would’ve liked to have been included in, but overall it was a good game.” Said Mark with a shrug and (Y/n) laughed.
“Yeah, you’re just disappointed that Big Waifu Lady Dimitrescu didn’t make an appearance and instead we were stuck with Smelly Mold Lady Miranda.” He playfully shoved her which made her giggle. “How dare you make such bold claims! I feel rather insulted!”
The previous comments had been almost forgotten as the father and daughter messed around both on and then off stream. They managed to score a good story for themselves in the real world, unlike their compared counterparts in the game, and that made them happy. Sure, worried thoughts lingered in the back of their minds, but at that moment, they didn’t matter. Mark and (Y/n) were a happy family, and to them that was all they could really ask for.
This is G. Garmadon (the G is for my actual name but I don't want to reveal that part of the name). She's an OC of mime for Ninjago. She's the first born daughter of Lord Garmadon and the Mistriss of Dragons.
Eventually, she officially joins the ninja (eventually becoming the grey ninja even though she prefers Black) during the events of the Mega Weapon arc. However, she takes a lot of time learning to trust them (she didn't really have anyone growing up and spent most of her time trying to keep Lloyd safe during his time at Darklies boarding school.)
My design for G. gives her a tough-girl look and feel. I would think the first people whom she trusts in the ninja group is Cole and Nya because of how similar the three of them are.
Because of her powers, the angrier she gets, the more she starts to look like a dragon (until she calms down). Until she reaches her true potential, she isn't able to control her dragon transformation. The last picture is what her full dragon form looks like.

"Wait! You don't want to do this! Don't do it! No! NO!!" The Fischbach household was filled with laughter as a screaming Markiplier was hit with a blue shell by his daughter, (Y/n). "Get wrecked, Dad!"
Her Yoshi raced past his struggling Mario, gaining the first place spot. They were only halfway through the course, but the last lap was always a battlefield, no matter what place you were in.
They were streaming Mario Kart 8 deluxe and having a Q/A on YouTube. "Alright, question time." Spoke Amy, Mark's girlfriend, after both Fischbachs finally crossed the finish line. Mark nodded, voting for a new course.
"FandomGirl386 asks: Mark, what's it like raising (Y/n) as a single father?"
The YouTuber looked to his right, seeing (Y/n) who was watching the screen with interest as the votes were being counted. She was a rising sophomore in highschool, (15-16) years old. It nearly brought tears to his eyes to realize how much she had grown.
Actually, it was surprising to think about how much the two of them had grown together.
Mark could still remember when, during his own sophomore year in highschool, his ex had stopped coming to school and refused to talk to him. Nine months later, Mark was doing homework when there was a knock at the door. His mom and dad weren't home so he went downstairs and answered the door.
When he opened it, no one was there, but there was a box on the doorstep. Mark had been confused. Had his parents ordered something online? As he had picked up the box he almost dropped it when the sound of a crying child filled the air.
He had quickly brought the box inside and opened it up. Indeed, there was a human child in the box crying with a note beside them. Mark focused on calming them down first, holding the child close and whispering softly, lulling them to sleep.
When he opened the note, his eyebrows furrowed with every word he read.
"Mark,
My parents wanted me to tell you this kid is your daughter. I was planning on just putting her up for adoption so you wouldn't know but whatever.
Her name is (Y/n) and her birthday's (birth month / day / 2005) So, yeah. You got me pregnant. The kid is your responsibility now. I'm breaking up with you. Goodbye.
(M/n)"
Mark remembered being shocked and heartbroken, and looking at the sleeping baby in disbelief. She had features similar to him and his family, now that he was searching for them. Slightly darker skin, brown eyes from what he had seen earlier, and she had (h/c) hair, something he knew was in his father's side of the family.
How was he going to explain to his family that he was a dad? Mark remembered asking himself this as he sat down on a nearby chair, careful not to wake (Y/n). It was a beautiful name, something that fit her well. Mark already had fallen in love with his new child, but how could he care for her?
Hours later, his parents returned and he had been about to ask them to be quiet when (Y/n) had woken up. He could still remember the shocked looks on their faces when they noticed the wailing baby in his arms as he tried to calm her down. "It's okay.. it's okay. Please stop crying, (Y/n).."
"Mark," his father's girlfriend, Dee, had asked, her head tilted in confusion. "Who's child is this?" The amount of panick he had felt then was off the charts as he shakily explained that she was his own. His father's eyes had widened and Mark hurriedly added that he had no idea before today that he had a kid and wasn't trying to hide her from them.
"It was tough. I mean, it's tough for all single parents to raise a kid by themselves, but I was a teenager in a poor family when I found out I was a dad, so you can imagine what that was like. But, things got easier over time. My family helped me out a bit while I was still in school so that was nice."
As a highschool student by day and a father by night, life was difficult for the new parent. The first few months had been the worst, (Y/n) waking up in the middle of the night and Mark having to go sooth her. However, she got over it and slept quietly after the fourth month, much to her father's delight.
Dee, while a little disappointed in Mark, agreed to help raise (Y/n) while he was still in school. After all, she quickly fell in love with her and had admittedly always wanted a little girl to take care of. His father took a bit more time to be swayed but also agreed to help out.
After her first birthday, (Y/n) took her first steps, Mark being the one she walked to. He remembered crying proud tears while Dee clapped in the background. Two months later, (Y/n) unexpectedly spoke her first words. Mark had called for his father and (Y/n) who sat nearby on a playmat shouted "Dada!" a few moments later.
Mark had looked toward her in shock, as his father who had walked in just as she said it.
When Mark left for college, he had to get an apartment and hire a babysitter. Then his father passed away around a year later. It was an incredibly hard time for Mark. Keeping up with school and his crappy job, all while raising (Y/n) who was now in Kindergarden and trying to mend the relationship between himself and his biological mother. It was incredibly tough and it worked him to the bone.
Then Mark got put in the hospital. While he was recovering, his mother visited him and informed him that if things didn't start looking up for him financially then she would have to take (Y/n) away and raise her instead, even willing to bring the matter to court. This scared Mark quite a lot. He loved his daughter and didn't want to lose her, but knew that his mom was right in that he wasn't making enough to properly support a family.
That's when he found YouTube and started his channel. It took some time, but money started coming in and everything was looking up. Mark was in love with his new job, he was able to take care of (Y/n), and his financial troubles slowly but surely melted away.
"And yes, there were some ups and downs in our lives after I had moved away from my family,"
Mark ended up in the hospital a few times, had low points not only in his career but in his life (friends and family dying), and still had to be there as a father for his daughter who also had her moments. However, (Y/n) was there for him just as he was for her, helping him through every bump in the road with a smile. Even now, Mark still didn't know what he would do without her.
"But we made it out okay. And we're still here so that's hopefully a sign that I'm doing something right."
Amy smiled and read off another question. "BloodyStar420 asked: (Y/n), what is your fondest memory of you and Mark and what's your worst memory?"
A new race started and (Y/n) answered.
"My least favorite memory, which I'm still trying to forget because I feel really guilty about it, is when he and I fought after I asked him about my mom. He didn't want to talk about it because it's a painful topic and I was being really pushy so we started arguing and things got to the point where I was sent to my room. I don't think we talked to each other for a few hours."
Mark still remembered that argument. It was an ugly part of their history. She was a curious fith grader and he didn't want to talk about his ex. How could he tell his daughter that he had no idea where her mom was and frankly didn't want to know either? But she wouldn't take no for an answer and, just as she said, things didn't end well for the both of them.
"On a happier note," she continued, "I think my fondest memory of the two of us is him teaching a younger me how to play video games. I wasn't very good when I started, I mean, I was like seven or eight years old, but dad was always with me nearby, showing me the controls and congratulating me when I was able to pass a level or defeat a boss on my own. It really made me happy and still does when I think of it."
That brought a smile to Mark's face. He had been, and still was, delighted that she took an interest in video games. They would spend a few hours together, playing Mario games or other simple things so she could get the hang of handling a controller. Fortunately she was a quick learner and they were able to play more difficult things sooner than he had expected.
When (Y/n) was in fourth grade, she was introduced to YouTube after he filmed a father/daughter play-through video of FNAF. Everyone loved her, even asking to see more of her on the channel. She was like him in multiple ways. Goofy, imaginative, and an all around fun person which boosted her popularity both online and in real life.
Mark was proud of her and tried his best to be a good father. His friends also adored her, making sure that she was happy (but not spoiled). Amy loved (Y/n) like a daughter which helped motivate Mark to ask her her out, thus giving his daughter a mom figure in her life.
During eighth grade, (Y/n) started her own YouTube channel, (YT/n), which quickly became popular. Much to her delight, it gave her a new name other than "Markiplier's daughter". It also gave her even more time to delve into her interests and helped her and Mark bond when they both loved and played a game together.
Amy once again spoke, "FurBabyKitty asked: You two act more like best friends than father and daughter. Does that bother either of you in any way?"
Mark shook his head. "Not at all. If anything, That's a good thing." (Y/n) shrugged, "If you think about it, we did grow up together so it kinda makes sense that we would act like this."
Mark looked over at her with a smirk and nudged her shoulder, making her slip up her driving and her Yoshi fall off the road allowing him to gain the lead. "Oh, you wanna play like that huh?" She laughed, speeding up to his Mario and tossing a red shell and a bomb into his path. He screamed and laughed as she once again passed him.
"DarkShoelace asked: Mark, if you had the opportunity to go back and prevent yourself from dating (Y/n)'s mom, would you do it?"
The race concluded with Mark in second and (Y/n) in first. Mark shook his head, hugging his daughter with one arm. "No," He said fondly as he looked down at her smiling face, "I don't think I would. Everything turned out just fine."

(Y/n) felt numb as she sat beside her bed. Fat tears ran down her face without any sign of stopping, flowing over barely visible bruises that had been healing for days. She wanted to stop crying, she wanted to love herself and be brave in front of others, but she wasn’t and couldn’t.
The voices were so loud..
They tortured her, filling her mind with poison. They told her things she didn’t want to hear, but after listening to them for so long, she began to believe them. And the voices weren’t just in her head, they were outside it too, resonating from people she saw nearly every day.
They would only laugh and work hard to make (Y/n)’s life miserable. Everyone seemed to be against her, the teachers, the principal, her classmates, everyone. Well, everyone except her father and his friends, but they didn’t know about the bullying and she didn’t dare tell any of them.
What if they agreed with it?
They will
They’ll agree
They hate you
Everyone hates you
The alarm clock beside her showed the time. “6:57? Great.. Only around 45 minutes until my regularly scheduled hell.” (Y/n) was so tired. She hardly slept, her anxiety keeping her up until the ungodly hours of the morning, not allowing for much rest. How many times had she used makeup in order to hide the dark circles under her eyes and the bruises on her face? Too many to count. (Y/n) just didn’t want her dad to worry.
But why would he be worried?
He doesn’t care
The alarm clock rang and (Y/n) covered her ears as more tears flowed down her face.
It’s so loud..
It’s too loud..
She shut the device off and grabbed a hoodie. She couldn’t let her dad see the bruises. (Y/n) did her make up, concealer and foundation covering the imperfections of her face. Walking out of the bedroom, fully dressed for the day, she trudged down the stairs and into the kitchen. There at the stove was her father, Mark Fischbach.
Noticing her presence in the room, he turned around and smiled at her. “Hey there, princess! Good morning!” He looked so happy. (Y/n) was secretly jealous of that happiness. She wanted to be just as happy as him but she couldn’t be. It was impossible. She forced a smile and waved to him. “Morning, dad.” Chica and Henry, the family’s two dogs, ran up to her excitedly, their tails wagging behind them. (Y/n) pet them, her hands feeling heavy and the sounds around her beginning to sound too loud for her tired body to process as she tried to prevent them from licking her face and thus removing her makeup.
“I made pancakes, do you want any?” Asked her father and she shook her head. “I’m not hungry. Thanks though.” That was a lie. (Y/n) was starving and the smell of the griddle cakes certainly wasn’t helping. However, she didn’t want to eat anything.
It would be a shame if you got any bigger
Mark frowned at her refusal. Sure, he didn’t want to force food on her, but he noticed just how many times she had skipped breakfast lately. Pancakes were her favorite, and she refused them? That was odd. “Honey, are you feeling okay? You haven’t been acting like yourself recently.”
“I’m fine, dad.” The reply, to (Y/n)’s horror, sounded much more rushed than she meant it to be. Her dad was watching her, his eyes scanning her as if trying to find the answer to an unspoken question. “I.. need to go. See you later.” She said shakily, rushing away and out the door not hearing what her dad called after her.
Coward
When she arrived at school, (Y/n) was distracted by the memory of the look her father gave her. “Does he know? He couldn’t. I’ve been so careful. Was he worried about me?”
No he wasn’t
He doesn’t care
She walked into the classroom, being the first one in per usual. (Y/n) sat down at her desk and waited for the torture to start. Just like earlier this morning, she felt numb. You’d think that because of who her dad was, she would be a popular kid at school. She was, only it wasn’t a good kind of popular. Being the daughter of Makiplier meant that any complaints of bullying she had didn’t matter, especially if those complaints were about the spoiled brats of the rich parents who helped fund the many school projects and trips. They said she was only trying to seek attention and that her supposed bullies were “golden children” who could do no wrong.
No one cares about you
Attention seeker
As students began to arrive in the classroom, (Y/n) stayed quiet. Of course, her pretending to not exist didn’t mean that people couldn’t see her. Throughout the day, the voices got louder and louder with every smirk, jeer, and hit. She was shoved into lockers, punched multiple times for no reason, tripped by people in the classrooms and cafeteria alike, threatened by a teacher for speaking up and nearly falling asleep in class, and kicked in the legs just because.
(Y/n) couldn’t stop the tears that fell as she sat in the girl’s bathroom, hiding from her classmates who were about to leave school. She didn’t know what she had done to deserve this treatment.
Cry Baby
Worthless
Drama Queen
They never stopped, no matter how much she begged or pleaded. She was alone, so very alone. Everyone knew who her dad was (most of the school watched his YouTube channel and then word moved around fast), but they used that against her.
You’re not pretty enough to be Markiplier’s daughter
Ugly
You weren’t even planned
You’re a literal accident
I bet he secretly regrets having and raising you. You’ve probably caused him so much trouble
Burden
Waste of space
Every day, every hour, every minute, the voices shouted louder and louder till she could barely hear anything else. (Y/n) had grown far too used to this treatment and her self esteem was at an all-time low. Everyone just seemed to have left her life and taken her happiness with them, leaving her behind in the dust to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and mind.
Evil thoughts of pain and death had started to flood her mind long ago, but she didn’t want to die. How would her father react? How would everyone react? Would they miss her? Would they regret the bullying?
They wouldn’t miss you
No one cares
They’d be glad you’re gone
They’d regret nothing
The voices continued to spread their poison as she finally managed to calm herself down enough to leave the bathroom and go home.
When she returned from school, (Y/n) noticed new voices in the house. Irish and English alike, there were definitely guests here. She was able to recognize them and quickly moved through the house when she thought no one was looking. Her dad had probably told her that Jack, Ethan, Bob, Wade, Ethan, and Amy were coming over, but she had forgotten.
Useless
She got scared suddenly when she noticed Jack in the hallway leading to the stairs, talking to Ethan. They suddenly noticed her and smiled. “(Y/n)! Hi! It’s been forever since I’ve seen you! How was school?” Now she was really panicking. He couldn’t know. He’d probably tell her dad.
“Uhh.. hi, Jack! School was.. Uh.. it was good I guess. School being what it is.” One after the other, Jack and Ethan opened their arms for hugs and she complied, though she hid a wince when they accidentally squeezed her fresh injuries.
When the embraces ceased, she excused herself and ran up to her room without greeting anyone else. She closed the door and walked over to the mirror, taking off her sweater to observe the damage. Looking at what happened to her arms, she frowned. It didn’t look good at all. It would definitely take some time to treat these. “Better now than later.” She thought as she walked over to her desk, taking out a first aid kit. She turned on some music and got to work.
-downstairs-
Mark looked at the clock on his phone and frowned. “(Y/n) should’ve been home by now.” He checked his texts and email, but there was nothing from her school so that ruled detention out. “What’s wrong?” Asked Wade as he watched his friend in concern. “I expected (Y/n) to already have been home, but I don’t know where she is.”
“Oh, (Y/n)? Don’t worry, she’s already here, we saw her. She should be up in her room.” Said Jack who walked in alongside Ethan. “Seriously? Dang, I didn’t hear her come in.” Said Mark in surprise but then he noticed Ethan frowning. “Is something wrong?”
“I’m worried about her. (Y/n) I mean. She seemed kinda off when she came home. I don’t know if there was a test today or..?” Mark shook his head sadly. “I noticed her acting odd this morning. I’ll go talk to her. You guys discuss pizza toppings and movie options, I’ll go check on my daughter.”
As he walked up the stairs, Mark ran through possibilities in his head. “Maybe she didn’t eat this morning because she was too nervous about something? Tests sometimes do that to a person, especially if they forgot to study. Maybe that’s it? Or, maybe she just wasn’t hungry? Maybe I’m overthinking this?”
He arrived at the door to (Y/n)’s bedroom and knocked. “Hey, sweetie, it’s me. Can I come in?” There was no reply. He tried again. “Are you okay in there?” Nothing. Now he was worried.
“(Y/n)? I’m coming in.”
Mark opened the door and was horrified by what he saw. There sat his daughter on her bed, without a hoodie on, and with large, dark bruises littering her arms which were on full display. (Y/n)’s eyes widened as she noticed him looking at her. She had earbuds in so she hadn’t heard him knock and she was treating her bruises before he had entered. Mark closed the door behind him and approached her.
“What happened?”
He was so nervous and he noticed that she was shaking more and more with every step he took. Her breathing was becoming faster and faster and tears began to flow from her eyes, wiping away makeup which he hadn’t noticed was applied. When had she suddenly gotten such dark circles under her eyes, and was that a bruise? “I’m sorry.. I’m sorry..” (Y/n) was whimpering and she began to hug herself, as if afraid I was going to hurt her. “Hey, hey it’s okay. You can tell me what’s going on. What happened? Who did this?”
(Y/n) wasn’t speaking and instead began to cry even harder. Mark’s heart nearly stopped. He prayed that she wasn’t doing any of this to herself. He had lost people this way before and he didn’t know what he would do if his own daughter was the next victim. He began questioning everything. “How long has this been going on? How did I never notice it? Is it because of me? Am I not good enough? Did I do something wrong?”
All his questions quickly melted away as he heard the choked sobs of his daughter. “Too much.. Everyone.. They won’t stop.. They hurt me and then no one.. believes me when I complain. They think.. I’m just looking for attention. And the voices.. They’re so loud.” Mark managed to put the pieces together in his mind and his eyes widened.
“Are you being bullied?”
(Y/n) nodded and Mark held his daughter gently as she cried into his shoulder. He didn’t understand why she was being picked on. Why hadn’t he been told yet? Why was he only finding out now, when the damage was so heavy? He’d certainly be having a word with the principal about this. “Why didn’t you tell me? I could’ve helped you.”
“I’m sorry.. I’m sorry..” She started apologizing and he was quick to shush her. “You have nothing to be sorry for. Why didn’t you tell me this was going on? Do the teachers know?” She managed to choke out an “I didn’t want to be a burden, and they don’t care. They only care about their rich “Golden Children”.” Mark shook his head sadly. “You aren’t a burden. I don’t know who’s been telling you that, but it isn’t true. I care about you so much and you are such an amazing person, (Y/n).”
He’s lying
“No.. you’re wrong. I’m fat, and stupid, and ugly, and just a burden to eveyone I’m around. I don’t deserve to be your daughter. You deserve someone better. You can stop pretending to care. I already know you don’t. You’re probably so disappointed in me.”
Mark was enraged at what he was hearing but kept his voice calm. “No, you’re wrong. If you’re thinking all that stuff then you don’t know anything. I love you so much. You are beautiful, and smart, and you make me so incredibly happy. No matter what anyone else, or those voices say, you can’t ever make me not love you. No matter what you do, I will always love you.”
“But-”
“No no no. Listen to my voice. Focus on me, not on those demons. You are important. You are loved. You have a purpose. What other people think, it doesn’t matter because you have worth. They don’t know what they’re talking about. Love you for you because that’s what really matters. You are one of the most important people in my life and if I could get you to understand just how much you mean to me, I’d do everything in my power to prove it. I love you.”
“Dad..” (Y/n)’s voice trailed off as she rested in his arms, emotionally worn out. Mark rocked her side to side in a warm embrace, whispering soft nothing in her ear. When he pulled away, he noticed that she was beginning to smile. Mark could tell, it was real this time. It would take time for her to heal and recover, but it would be okay. He would be there for her every step of the way.
Just then, her stomach let out a loud rumble. He smirked as (Y/n) blushed in embarrassment. “You hungry? We’re thinking of ordering pizza.” She smiled and nodded, the sound of food making her empty stomach rumble again. “Yeah, that sounds good.” Mark gave her one last hug before helping her treat her bruises. (Y/n) pulled on a fresh hoodie and followed him downstairs.
At the sight of her, Jack and Ethan smiled and waved, which surprised the young Fischbach. Everyone there was so happy and excited to see her and slowly but surely the voices began to get quieter and quieter until all that remained was the laughter and comfort that came from her father and their friends.
The movie night was fun. You and Jack argued together against the others about accepting pineapple as a pizza topping. Bob and Wade recalled stories about their college days and stupid stuff that happened recently, which made everyone laugh. They all had a pillow fight while waiting for the pizza to arrive, Mark and Ethan started a mini food fight with popcorn, much to Chica and Henry’s delight, and the pizza was eaten while everyone watched an older movie called “Return to Me”.
(Y/n) felt sleepy as she stared at the tv. She sat next to her dad who had his arm around his girlfriend, Amy. The voices, telling her she didn’t belong there returned, but this time, she rejected them. She knew the truth, and the negative words spewed nothing but lies. She knew that they would never completely go away, and the actions of those that hurt her could never be taken back, but she felt content knowing that even if people disliked or hated her, her father at least would be there to help her drown out her demons.
As the movie neared its end, Mark felt a small pressure on his arm. Looking over, he smiled when he found his daughter fast asleep and resting against him. “Good night, (Y/n).. I love you so much.” He whispered, kissing her forehead gently and he could’ve sworn he saw a smile creep onto her face. Yeah.. everything would turn out alright.

“Alright, so if we go down this hallway and to the left, there should be the exit..” You mumbled to no one in particular, your character roaming a haunted hallway inside of a horror game called “123 Slaughter Me Street”. The chat of your youtube livestream was rather slow today. There were plenty of people watching, over 6 thousand people, but it wasn’t as active as it was normally.
Maybe you weren’t seeing how fast it actually was. It was raining outside which seemed to slow the world down, and you were playing a horror game, making you hyper sensitive to every moving thing in the room within your peripheral vision. It really wasn’t the most ideal or relaxing environment, but that was fine. It was a horror game stream so why in the world would it be relaxing?
As you finally found the exit, your chat began to go absolutely nuts, comments flashing by faster than you could read it. Comments like, “BEHIND YOU!!” and “OMGOSH (YT/n) LOOK OUT!” being the most common which made you confused as you entered the lit doorway inside the game. “Chat what are you-”
A loud shout and the feeling of two hands grabbing your shoulders made you shriek and thrash around, consequently falling out of your chair and onto the floor. There above you, laughing with his hands on his knees, was your dad, Markiplier. “HAHAHA! The look on your face was priceless!” You got up, smacking him lightly on the arm. “You’re lucky I finished the level, otherwise I would’ve killed you.”
Mark smiled, looking at you with an innocent look. “Aww don’t be like that. You know you love me.” Returning to your chair, you smirked and let your hands rest on the keyboard and mouse. “I don’t know.. I think I’m starting to shift more to hate than love.” Mark let out a dramatic gasp, his hands flying to the back of your chair and shaking it as he exclaimed, “But (Y/n), hatred to the dark side leads! Has Star Wars taught you nothing??”
The chat was still thriving with the many viewers shouting compliments, hellos, and proclamations of love to you and Mark, as well as laughing at your family antics. “Anyway,” your dad continued, watching as you start up the next level, “I got some Chick-Fil-A while I was out and I have some food for you if you want it.”
“Oh heck yeah I want it. Thank you! I take back what I said about hating you.” Mark laughed as he left the room and came back a moment later with the bag of deliciousness, followed closely by Chica who stared intently at the delivery. “Alright, see you after the stream! Love you!” He said, waving behind him as he left the room.
“Love you too!” You paused the game, opening up the bag and sorting the food on the desk before resuming. Looking back at the stream, the stream of comments hadn’t entirely died down from their Markiplier high. “Oi, chat, stop calling my dad hot.” Taking a bite out of a waffle fry, you started a new level.
-timeskip a week later-
“No, Alcina Lady Dimitrescu would never be a vessel for someone so unworthy as Eva! Already perfect is what you were trying to say! Already the pinnacle of evolution! You could literally do no better than what you already have so why would you even need a vessel for Eva?” Announced Mark as he played through Resident Evil Village.
As he continued his rant, a knock came from the door. “Dad! She’ll be a fine vessel. It’s not like Lady’s alive or anything.” You called, opening the door to the room. Yes, you knew he was recording but decided to mess with him. “No! Shut up! You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Stop lying to yourself! She’s dead, she’s not real, and she’s not coming back!”
“First of all, she’s not dead, she’s just in my pocket in the form of an inanimate crystal statue. Also, I could say the same thing about some of those fictional boys you love so much.”
“At least my fictional relationships won’t try to kill me as soon as they see me.”
“Listen, we have a very complicated relationship! You wouldn’t understand our love.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say.” You promptly left the room as Mark rolled her eyes. “She doesn’t know what she’s talking about, chat.”
-timeskip the next day-
You were once again streaming live on YouTube, this time playing Fall Guys. So far you had managed to score two wins out of the seven rounds you played thus far. During a break in the game, you once again saw your chat go nuts with excited greetings to your dad. Turning around, you noticed Mark frozen in place, as if by not moving you wouldn’t notice him. The two of you stayed in that position, your interlocked gazes not breaking for about a minute.
In his hand was a small box of mocha pop tarts.
“Breaking your diet again, are you?” You said, crossing your arms as Mark started moving again, hiding the opened box of pastries behind your reading pillow and some stuffies in front of your bookshelf. The box was perfectly hidden on the lower shelf. “Don’t tell Amy.” He simply said, exiting the room.
The chat continued to move quickly, people spamming messages like:
“Don’t worry! I’ll never snitch on you 🤫”
“I LOVE YOU MARK!!!”
“Even when binge eating poptarts, he’s still friggin hot!”
And “MARK PLS MARRY ME!!”
Yes, this certainly wasn’t uncommon when he appeared in a stream, but it did get annoying at times. “Chat, calm the heck down and for heaven’s sake stop calling my dad hot!”
“An interesting comment section you have here.” suddenly came a comment from Mark in the live chat, making it blow up once again with the praise and nearly undivided attention from the excited viewers.
“(sigh). This is gonna be a long stream…” You grumbled under your breath as you continued the game.
-timeskip later that day-
Mark was relaxing in the living room when You walked downstairs, sitting down on a nearby couch. An awkward silence filled the room, the two of them not daring to break it or even look at each other. The pressure began to build with every second that passed till it reached a breaking point when a female voice entered the scene with the sound of a closing door.
“Mark, (Y/n)! I’m here!”
“I’M GONNA TELL AMY!!”
“(Y/N) NO!!!”
I recently have been getting followers on Twitter out of no where. I'm not kidding. I have no friggin idea WHO THE HECK these people are. They never liked any of my posted, but suddenly decided to follow me. Don't get me wrong, I'm flattered, but these people all have the same thing in common.
The profiles are Japanese.
Like, I'm here to follow my favorite YouTubers and see anime and memes, and suddenly I have these unknown people from the other side of the planet following my twitter account and receiving my posts.
Kinda strange but whatever.

-------- (Y/n)’s POV)
Looking around, everything was blurry and white. I couldn’t understand where I was or what was happening. Sirens sounded from far away and blue and red colored lights started to appear in the distance. Concerned and muffled voices spoke outside of the white wall that obscured my vision.
I couldn’t understand them, but I could tell they were just as afraid as I was, though I didn’t know why.
Three blurry figures rose beside me, their voices concerned but inaudible to me. They turned to me, seemingly wondering what I thought of the situation. I didn’t reply and only stared at them, wondering who they were. They were small childlike beings with no discernible traits other than different sizes of hair that blended in with their figures. From what I could somewhat see, I assumed there were two boys and one girl in this place with me.
The white wall suddenly opened, the sound of a zipper present as a new figure appeared in my sight. “We need to go.” The figure spoke, her voice echoey and muffled. I was finally able to recognize her as female. She motioned for us to follow her, and we all got up and left the room, now revealed to be a tent. The blurry woman urged us forward and I struggled to keep up with her and the others.
I heard shouts behind us and I looked back in time to see a blinding light overwhelm my eyesight. I tripped over something in front of me and I was quickly grabbed by someone who ran behind me. Upon hearing my cry of alarm, the blurry woman halted, and her eyes widened, seemingly not knowing what to do. Then with a soft, “I’m sorry”, she disappeared into the woods with the other three. I cried out for her with my own inaudible voice before I was quickly dragged backward, the light once again overtaking my vision.
I awoke with a start, a small yelp of alarm escaping my mouth. I was back in my room at Mark’s house. I put a hand over my racing heart but was shocked to see it shaking. ‘A nightmare..’ I thought, my breathing slowing down to an appropriate pace. ‘I can’t accurately remember the last time I had one of those.’
I heard footsteps coming down the hallway and my door opened to reveal a panicked Markiplier standing in the entrance. “(Y/n), are you okay? I heard you yell.” I blushed in embarrassment. “Yeah, I’m fine. I just.. had a nightmare, that’s all.” Mark came closer and sat on the edge of my bed. “Do you want to talk about it, kiddo?”
I looked at him, the dark circles under his eyes noticeable even in the dark room we were in. “If I’m being honest, I’m not entirely sure what it was about, so talking about it probably wouldn’t help. Sorry..” As I said this, I looked over at the clock. I frowned, realizing it read one in the morning.
Mark nodded, covering his mouth as he yawned, “Alright. Remember that I’m here if you want to talk.” I nodded and he leaned over, giving me a warm hug. I returned the gesture after a moment of hesitation and he left the room, closing the door behind him.
I looked down again, the guilt of bothering him sending an uncomfortable chill down my spine. Mark had been so busy these past few days, and I felt awful that I just seemed to be another problem interrupting his work. That new interactive adventure he was working on, as exciting as the concept was, it took a toll on him, whether he acknowledged it or not. Laying down and closing my eyes once more, I prayed that there wouldn’t be any more nightmares waiting for me in the dreamscape.
(Time skip a few weeks later)
There hadn’t been any nightmares since that night, but the memory still remained. I tried not to let it bother me, but the unanswered questions in my mind were driving me nuts. Who were those other people? Why did the police show up? What grabbed me in the darkness? Why did the woman leave? Why did they look familiar? Unfortunately, I didn’t have and could find the answers to any of these queries.
Mark, by this point, had finally finished the script for “In Space With Markiplier” and was able to focus on regaining a normal sleep schedule and making up for lost time with Chica and I. It was fun to see him outside of his office after such a long time, but even so, I felt bad about all the times I had interrupted him during the writing process of his big project. He probably would’ve been out quicker if it wasn’t for me.
I shook my head, trying to get those kinds of words out. “Stop being so stupid, you don’t know what would or wouldn’t have happened so stop blaming yourself.” I thought, my eyes rolling in annoyance at the sheer (Y/n)-ness my thoughts had turned into for a second. Mark had told me before that he didn’t mind taking small breaks, even if it was to check up on me. He had even said that if I hadn’t woken up from the nightmare, he might’ve pulled an all-nighter and forgotten to sleep at all. It turns out that he had realized how tired he was and had gone to bed soon after making sure I was okay.
Chica walked over to me, her tail wagging happily as I gently scratched behind her floppy ear. “I know that you missed dad too, didn’t you, Chica-Beeka? Aren’t you glad he’s done writing that long video script?” I said in a goofy voice and as I knelt down, she started to lick my face in reply. “Ack! No!! Stop!! Back you foul beast!!” Chica knocked me over as she continued her merciless assault. I played dead but instead of just stopping or finding Mark, she just plopped down on top of me with a tired huff.
Mark, who had just entered the room, got to witness this interaction and started laughing his butt off. “FATHER!!” I cried, my voice muffled from underneath the floof. “HELP ME!”
“What?”
“HELP ME!”
“Sorry, I can’t understand you. What?”
“I said, help me!”
“Stinky feet? You dare insult our dearest Chica by saying that she has stinky feet? For shame, (Y/n). For shame. As punishment you shall have to stay under your furry prison until it decides to move.”
“TRAITOR!!!”
“Fare thee well, daughter. I goeth to play the things known as “Video Games”.” Mark said dramatically and I managed to get my head out from underneath Chica, watching him start to leave the room. “Beeka? You want a treat?” The golden retriever stood up immediately and bounded off toward the kitchen. Mark looked back at me with a playful pout. “You’re no fun.”
“You’re the one who left me to die.” I said with an equally playful yet sassy tone. “That’s it, young lady, you’re in trouble now.” said my dad, who ran toward me as I tried to follow our dog. “NOOOOO!!!” He caught me in his arms and we tumbled to the floor as he started ferociously tickling me. I could hardly breathe as I laughed, and his own goofy laughter only added to the hilarity.
When Mark finally stopped, I started to catch my breath and I looked up at him, seeing his smiling face. “I am so glad I adopted you.” He murmured softly, helping me up and giving me a warm hug. Chica came back from the kitchen, curious about the commotion and bothered by her lack of treats. Upon seeing the family cuddles, she jumped in between us, wagging her tail and effectively hitting Mark and I in the face a bunch of times.
“Agh no! She’s too good! Chica! You’re too good!” Mark cried out, coughing to get rid of the stray dog hairs that had invaded his mouth. I had begun laughing again, my mind blissfully distracted for a bit as I watched Chica begin her lick assault on my father. Quickly getting up from my position on the floor, I entered the kitchen and retrieved a dog treat. Chica, upon hearing the container open, came running to receive the long awaited goods.
Mark followed a few seconds after, first looking over at his dog munching away at the treat then at the stove top clock. “Ahh that was fun. Too bad It’s getting late. You ought to get to bed.” He commented, shifting his gaze back over to me. I nodded, recognizing that he was right. He gave me a hug and a pat on the back. “Sleep well, kiddo. You’ve got a big day tomorrow.” With that, I retired to my room.
- Start of Dream -
I once again opened my eyes to a blurry scene. It was slightly dark, but I could make out some shapes nearby. They were the same figures from before! They were gathered around what looked like a table, with me at the head. I heard two voices coming closer, singing a familiar tune. I looked over to see a slightly blurry cake with what looked like five candles being brought in by the two blurry adults.
“Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday, Dear (Y/n)! Happy Birthday to you!” They all sang, placing the cake in front of me. I had begun to smile, their faces becoming a bit clearer once I blew out the candles and some lights flipped on. The woman had black hair and pretty (e/c), the same eye color as mine. The man had tanish-gray hair and looked a bit older than the woman. He had bluish-gray eyes.
The younger figures were a bit closer so I looked at them next. The tallest looked to potentially be the oldest with dark brown hair and brown eyes. The second tallest had strawberry blonde hair and had a lot of freckles. His eyes were the same color as the woman’s. The last of the figures was quite a few inches smaller than the previous one. He had tanish-brown hair and the man’s blue-gray eyes which seemed to have a glow of mischief in them. But before I could fully process their faces, a loud noise sounded and I woke up.
- End of Dream -
I looked around my room, wondering what the cause of the disturbance was. Looking over toward my dresser, I noticed that a picture frame that had admittedly been in an unstable position had fallen over, thus making the loud noise. With an annoyed sigh, I looked over at my alarm clock, checking the time. “12:04 AM.” I thought, turning away from the device and closing my eyes.
“Happy Birthday to me..”
- timeskip -
It was in fact a big day and I had a blast. Mark, Amy, Ethan, Tyler, and I went to an amusement park and went to my favorite restaurant for dinner. When we got home, Mark and Amy surprised me with a delicious looking cake with the number 15 on it via two big number candles. They sang so nicely and I watched the flames on the candles burn. As they finished the song, I hesitantly blew out the candles as my vision suddenly went blurry. Mark placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Hey, are you okay? Why are you crying? Do you not like it?”
Tears? Is that what was obscuring my vision? I wiped them away but more kept coming. “I don’t understand.. I’m so happy, so why am I crying?”
The Happy Birthday song rang in my ears, the voices of the people in my dream singing along. I let out a small laugh. How silly of me to get so emotional over a little thing like this. “Thank you both so much for this. I can’t even begin to tell you how much it means to me.” I didn’t lie. I didn’t know how to tell them, and I didn’t even understand why.
Mark and Amy gave me a big hug and I relished in the affection. I don’t know if they knew this, but it was exactly what I needed at that moment. I already saw Amy as my mother-figure and Mark was my dad, so in that moment it was like we were a real family. “I love you guys..” I murmured softly and they smiled, Amy wiping away one of my stray tears. “We love you too.”
Later that night, Amy had gone home and Mark came to check up on me when I was already in bed. “Hey, kiddo. I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” I nodded and smiled at him, sitting up in bed. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He frowned slightly. “Are you sure? I mean, it’s not that I don’t believe you, it’s just that I’m a bit worried because you started crying earlier.” I realized what was bothering him and I climbed out of bed and quickly hugged him.
“Dad! I promise I’m okay! I just got a bit emotional. That’s all.” Mark nodded and hugged me back. “D-do you want to talk about it?” I frowned a little and I looked down, but knew that it might help to talk it out. It usually does. “I.. have been having dreams lately..” Mark led me to my bed and sat next to me. “What are they about?”
“I keep dreaming of some family I don’t think I’ve ever met before..” Mark’s eyes widened slightly and he looked at me. His eyes looked a bit worried though his face looked curious. “What.. What do you dream about them?” I frowned and looked down. “The first time, it was them being chased down by the police and I got taken away from them.. The next time, this morning actually, they were celebrating my birthday and singing to me. I don’t know if that’s why I got emotional when you and Amy sang, but.. It’s what happened..” Mark hugged me close and I could hear his heartbeat. It was faster than normal. “I’m so sorry. Do these dreams bother you at all?” I nodded slightly. “A little bit.. I don’t remember these people at all, but they feel so familiar to me. I don’t know how to feel when I have one of these dreams.” Mark gently rubbed my back and his voice was slightly hesitant as he spoke. “Is it possible.. Um.. is it possible these dreams aren’t actually dreams?”
I looked up at him, “What?” Mark looked away, almost seeming nervous. “I’ve read, and have heard, that sometimes dreams can actually be suppressed memories.. So.. that family..” My eyes widened, “They might be, like, my biological family?” Mark nodded, but his eyes looked sad. “Yeah.” He looked at me again. “Do you remember anything before you were put in the orphanage? Any people or events?” I shook my head. “No.. I don’t really remember much if anything from before my time as an orphan. I don’t even know how I got there.”
Mark nodded and took a deep breath. “If.. if it wouldn’t bother you, could you tell me about that first dream of yours? The one about the police?” I frowned and looked away and he panicked. “It’s okay if you don’t want to! I don’t want to force you into anything!” I shook my head and smiled at him reassuringly. “No no! It’s not that. I do want to tell you, it’s just that.. It was a weird dream and I’m still processing this theory of ours.”
Mark nodded and I took a deep breath before starting to talk again. “We were in a forest. It was night time and I assume we were in a tent. There were three other kids in the tent with me. Red and Blue lights came and all of us kids were forced to run into the woods with a woman. I tripped and the woman left me behind, taking the other three with her while I was suddenly dragged backwards. That’s when I woke up.”
Mark was silent for a minute as he processed the information I had given him. He then frowned. “I think, if that was actually a memory of yours, that was how you were taken away from your parents. I suspect that’s also why you start panicking when you think you’ve been left behind. You were traumatized by that woman, your mother, abandoning you when you were younger.” I blinked. He was right. There was no other real explanation for my fear that made sense for me. I looked at Mark. “But then why did she abandon me? I assume the red and blue lights were police lights, but if that was the case, why did she run? Was she a criminal or something?”
Both of us said nothing before he spoke up. “I.. don’t have a solid answer for you. I’d hate to think that was the real reason police would show up to a campsite like that, but.. It’s a possibility.” I sighed softly but then smiled at him. “Well then, I guess I got an upgrade parental wise.” Mark couldn’t help but smile and he hugged me. “I love you, kiddo.”
“I love you too.” I murmured, hugging him back with a smile. Mark looked at the clock and sighed. “Alright. As much as I love talking to you, it’s gotten a bit late and I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit tired from all the fun we had today.” Right on cue, I yawned and Mark laughed. “I knew it!” I couldn’t help but giggle when he said that. “Alright.. Do you feel better now?”
I nodded and he gave my hand three squeezes. I Love You.
I squeezed back four times. I Love You Too.
Smiling, he got up off of the bed. “Alright then. Have a good night. Sleep well, (Y/n).” I smiled up at him. “You too, dad.” She smiled and nodded, walking out of the room with a final look back, speaking once more before leaving. “Happy Birthday.” When he was finally gone I frowned and looked down. The conversation we just had weighed slightly on my mind. What Mark said made sense, but it was a little difficult for me to wrap my head around. The logic was there, but I wanted more answers. I didn’t want “what ifs”, I’d prefer to have the entire story.
But I couldn’t.
I didn’t know where my biological family was. I didn’t know why they left nor why the police were there. It shouldn’t concern me as much as it was, but I understood that maybe there were some things that would have to remain unknown. With a sigh, I tucked myself in and closed my eyes, falling into a dreamless sleep.
(timeskip)
It had been three months since my birthday, and that was the last time I had one of those dreams. Life had been very good, and the concepts Mark and I talked about that night didn’t really bother me anymore. Right now, I was laughing with him about the stupidity that ensued during his latest charity live-stream. He and the other guys had made a ton of meals that were to be donated to a charity food pantry. We were there now, dropping it off.
“I got so worried when Ethan almost dropped that whole bowl of dough, but did you see the way it flipped??” I laughed as Mark recounted a hilarious moment when Ethan ended up flipping a bowl of pasta dough and catching it after he almost dropped it to the floor. “I know right? The chat was going crazy!” We continued talking as we finished placing the food in the pantry and my laughter died down as I looked to my side and I spotted a man and a woman receiving some food from the pantry workers.
No.. It couldn’t be. Could it?
It was them, albeit a bit older, but I’d recognize them anywhere. They were the man and woman from my dream memories. Mark noticed my distractedness and followed my gaze, his eyes found the man and woman and he looked back at me. “Do you know them?” I frowned but didn’t take my eyes off of them. “From my dream.. It’s them.” Mark’s eyes widened and he looked back at the man and woman.
The woman suddenly looked in our direction and her eyes widened. I nervously looked away, fearing that I had creeped her out. Mark asked if I wanted to talk to her and I wasn’t sure what to say. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder and when I looked in it’s direction, I saw the woman. “Excuse me,” she spoke, her voice tender and gentle, as if talking to a child, which in a way, she was. “What’s your name?”
I took a shaky breath and looked toward Mark who just nodded and looked away. He wouldn’t look at me. “I’m.. My name is (Y/n). What’s yours?” The woman’s eyes widened again and they began to brim with tears. “It’s you.. It’s really you, isn’t it?” I felt myself getting emotional as well, but tried to hide it. “Do I know you? I feel as though I do, but I’m not entirely sure.”
“(F/n), come here! She’s here! We’ve found our (Y/n)!” The man came over and his eyes widened. “My dear, are you sure?” I looked back over at Mark to see him busy himself on his phone, his foot tapping against the ground slightly. I didn’t know what to do. “I’ve been having dreams.. About you two and three other kids. Or at least, people who looked like you.” The man and woman smiled kindly. “Your brothers and sister. Yes.. they are real.”
I looked down, not sure where to begin. The woman, my mother, moved to hug me but I instinctively took a step back. “H-hold on a second. Then if those dreams were actually memories, then I have questions that need answered.” The woman stopped and the man put his arm around her, nodding. I took a deep breath and began.
“I-In the forest.. We were in a tent, and the police showed up. Why? Are you two..” I trailed off for a moment, worried about continuing this train of thought. “Criminals?” My father looked away and frowned and my mother shook her head. “No. We weren’t… not really.” She trailed off looking a bit guilty. “Then why were the police showing up at the campsite?”
“We were.. Behind on a lot of payments and we had already gotten a notice.. We struggled to get enough money to pay our debt off, but it wasn’t enough and the IRS sent the police after us. They were sent to bring you and your siblings to the orphanage that you no doubt were sent to after you were taken.” My father spoke up and I frowned. “Which brings up another question. Why was I the only one left behind to be taken away?”
My mother looked incredibly sad as she voiced the reason. “You tripped and fell. If I stopped to pick you up, then your brothers and sister would be taken too. I couldn’t risk it so, regretfully, I had to leave you behind. I didn’t want to, I promise you that. My heart broke when the officer caught you and I was forced to run.” My eyes filled with tears and I nodded in understanding. As much as it hurt to know the truth that I had to be “sacrificed” for the good of the majority, I also was glad it happened. After all, if I wasn’t taken away, I likely wouldn’t have met Mark.
“As much as I hate that it happened that way, mainly because it gave me some.. issues, I’m happy to know the full story. I’m glad I finally got to meet you two.” The smiles that graced their faces brought an amazing amount of joy to my heart and I couldn’t help but smile back. I didn’t lie either. I really was happy to meet my biological parents. Then their next words made my smile vanish and my heart nearly stop.
“Do you.. Want to live with us again?” My eyes went wide. “W-what?” My father spoke up. “We’re better off now. We’re not the most wealthy people out there, but we’re able to stand on our own two feet so that’s good enough. We can finally support our family and we’d like you to join us.” My head was spinning with the force of this question. They looked so hopeful that I would say yes. I looked back at Mark, wondering how he was reacting to this. He was still on his phone, but I could see that something was wrong with him.
He was upset, but was trying not to show it.
I turned back to my parents and spoke up. “Listen.. You both are so sweet and I’m happy to have met you, but..” I looked away, trailing off. My mother looked a little upset by my answer but smiled in understanding. “That man over there.. He’s your guardian, isn’t he?” She guessed correctly and I smiled a little, nodding. “I only just met you two.. I can’t just abandon him for people who are essentially strangers to me.” I could hear a slight gasp from behind me and I knew that Mark heard me. “But hey,” I continued, taking out my phone. “Let’s keep in touch.”
That brought a smile to my mother’s face and we exchanged numbers. “I’ll see you both around, right?” They nodded and upon seeing their anxious looks, I gave them both hugs. “Until we meet again.” I murmured, smiling at them before turning and quickly going to Mark’s side. “Are you ready to go?” He nodded and as we started walking back to the car, he spoke up again.
“Are.. are you sure about your decision? I mean, they’re your real family.” His eyes were slightly filled with tears as I looked at him and I wrapped my arm around his torso in a side hug, smiling up at him. “What are you talking about? Yeah, they were my first family, but you’re my new family. You saved me from the orphanage and you helped me overcome a lot of my social anxieties. Do you hear me right now? I don’t stutter now. I can talk to people normally, and that’s thanks to you. You’re my dad, Mark, and I love you.”
Mark couldn’t stop the tears from falling as he hugged me and I hugged him back. “I love you too.. So much.. Is it selfish to say that I was scared that you would go with them?” I shook my head and grinned at him. “No, not at all. But you don’t need to worry anymore.” I gently squeezed his hand three times. “I’m right here.” Mark smiles, tears rolling down his cheeks as I led him to the car, both of us finally ready to go home, together.
