do yall actually realize just how bad of an example Arthur is to John when it comes to taking care of a human body? one day john will finally have a body of his own (hopefully) and his only frame of reference on which kind of injuries are serious and which can just be walked off will be arthur fucking lester. he will be hungry and tired and cold and his example of a healthy schedule is arthur. fucking. lester.

my s2 rowan theory

okay i had an epiphany the other night about this. i've been analyzing venetian blind man (and the songs blue has on his offical rowan playlist, but that analysis isn't complete yet) recently, and there's one lyric i could never figure out.

"Lord knows I've said awful things 'round this house They echo through the frame and six feet down"

now this!! this is interesting!! let's take a look see at the "six feet down" part. who do we know that has died? no not that one. rowan's former co-counselor. and to further seal this?

"...last year, in a different weather-related incident, a counselor from Cabin Magpie Moth was tragically… destroyed." -FILE 3. The Squall of Prophecy.

and who predicts those weather incidents? rowan. and how does he communicate his predictions? by saying them to others. and by god i'm sure those predictions count as "awful things". and i may be looking too far into this, but the venetian blind man lyrics say "i've SAID awful things." past tense. it isn't him currently saying these things that have a fatal effect, but rather he's said them and the fatality has already happened.

another tidbit that could be unrelated is this line

"Well, campers returning from last summer will remember what happened last time we ignored one of Rowan's forecasts." -FILE 2. The End of the Squall.

could rowan have predicted something so awful that it killed his own co-counselor?

this is gonna be a lot of me interpreting kayne very specifically, but kayne DOESN'T lie. he withholds information but he does not lie. and here, he speaks as if... like he doesn't realize that lilith HAS met arthur. that she DOES love him. that he's her favorite.

and i don't have the ep 50 transcript but i believe that when lillith is being explained to arthur, mother darkness says that she was the forgotten one trapped within hattie. being FORGOTTEN, to me, sounds like "presumed dead," specifically by other gods. oscar described it as a great entity being "trapped." if lillith has been trapped long enough, which, if we're going by what mother darkness said, it has been a LONG time, it's possible her father doesn't think she's alive. or at least she's not coming back from where she was trapped.

im not exactly arguing that lillith is DEAD, im arguing that she's lost enough power that it is the equivalent of being dead to the other gods. based off what kayne says, it seems that lillith has a habit of liking humans (probably what got her originally trapped within hattie) and messing with them. i think this particular comment is more a memory. like a "ah, someone messing with a human because they like them. my daughter used to do that..."

so to bring me to my point, because lillith is a shapeshifter and because (supposedly) kayne isn't really paying attention to what's going on in season five (based on:)

(whether he's not paying attention because he CAN'T (blackstone) or he WON'T i cannot say) the point is, he wouldn't have seen lillith alive. and when mother darkness explains lillith to arthur they are hidden with the hand of malevolence. PLUS, dead children are kind of A Thing in this show, idk if you noticed (faroe, addison, marie's son, malam, mother darkness and the witch...). so, the idea of kayne seeing lillith, his daughter, resurrected to her full self after being dead for years, doesn't seem so far off for the overall themes of the show.

plus, i think it gives him and arthur something to talk about. and adds a fun flavor to his character. the way he talks to arthur about faroe? while having a daughter of his own he believes to be dead? actually insane.

On one hand, I think the Arthur Lester hate is so fucking valid. We’ve seen what he’s done in the past, the pain he’s put people through, the decisions he has made. *He* knows how horrible he was, and is. But I’m so curious how much people think he should suffer to make up for it. This man has been to hell and back and gone through things that would make anyone snap, and he just keeps going — to say that Arthur hasn’t suffered enough for his mistakes is an interesting thought. Even he hasn’t forgiven himself fully, and I don’t think he ever will. I guess I can’t really get on the “I hate Arthur Lester as a character” train like I see a lot of people doing — Has he fucked up incredibly? Fuck yeah he has. Is he irredeemable? I don’t think so- and I think that’s a very Malevolent message - no one is irredeemable or undeserving of forgiveness.

This is a lot of nonsensical rambling I’m not too sure what the point I’m trying to make is other than I get a little tired of the constant “Arthur Lester is a shit protagonist” discourse. He’s not MEANT to be perfect, or even someone you need to root for 100% of the time, if you want that in a protagonist I’m sure you can go somewhere else rather than complaining about him every episode 😭
