Punk 101: Lace Code

Lace Code is one of my favorite things, and so it happens to be the Punk 101 post that I’ve worked on the most. I’m sorry (I know I said at some point band shirts were up next 😬)

To start, it is important to talk about where Lace Code came from, and where it is now. Using lace colors on your boots (doc martins specifically) started with London Skinheads in the 70’s. Their white and red laces were typically symbols of white supremacy, and in some groups those laces had to be earned.

I’ll eventually do another post on Skinheads, but for now all you need to know is that the Skinhead subculture is historically known for being racist and violent. I always feel the need to point something out when talking about Skinheads: NOT EVERY BALD OR SHAVEN PUNK IS A SKINHEAD!

Later on in the 80’s, Lace Code became a popular way for many Punk subculture to communicate things such as their stance on racism and their sexuality. Now, in many areas, Lace Code is dead, but not everywhere!

Lace Code applies to ladder laced black combat boots (typically people wear docs). Each color represents something different, and this can vary by area, so it is important to check your local scene

How to ladder lace:

Traditional ladder laces are shown on the left, and quick release ladder laces are shown on the right. And here is a site that goes step by step

What do The Colors Mean?

(Colors mean different things in different places. These are the most common meanings and the ones I personally know - check your local scene to ensure its not different for your area)

Orange: Anti-Racist // Anti-ICE // No Meaning

Yellow: Anti-Racist

Green: Environmentalist // Peace // No Meaning

Blue: Killed a Cop

Purple: Queer // Gay

Pink: Feminist // Queer // Gay

Black: No Meaning

Patterned: No Meaning

Red: Nazi // Neo-Nazi // Anarchist

White: White Supremacy // Nazi // Neo-Nazi

Note: no one can stop you from wearing whatever you want, but in some areas you should be mindful because there are still people who follow Lace Code, and if youre seen with red or white ladder laces, you might be in for it

2nd Note: Its always advised that you dont wear ladder laces when traveling if you are unfamiliar with the Lace Code of the area you are traveling to for safety purposes

I desined a Prism Team based on Playing Card Suits! For those who don't know, Prism is a magical girl show in concepting created by Ginganinja/ June/ ActuallyRea on youtube. I have more info on the characters below

Diamonds is Penelope (Penny) Carmilla, and her Prism is Nala. She is based on diamonds, medieval royalty, rococo fashion, and golden Hollywood. She is the leader of the team. She's kind of a snob in her civilian form, coming from old money and raised with a 'better than thou' mentality, but befriending and hanging out with the rest of the team is helping her out. Nala, tho, is not helping, preferring the luxurious lifestyle.

Spades is Joan Bronwen (my favorite), and her Prism is Argos. She is based on spades, medieval knights/ warriors, gothic lolita, Ares, and Athena. She is the main fighter of the team. She has a bit of a Clark Kent situation with her civilian identity, being very punk/ alt so nobody recognizes her in a dress. She has an … interesting relationship with being a magical girl.

Hearts is Nevaeh Rose, and her Prism is Agnus. She is based on hearts, medieval nuns, nurses, and maids. She is the support/ healer of the team. As a civilian she is studying to become a nurse, is extremely sweet and kind, and a bit cottage core. She’s the youngest of the team and is the most susceptible to the Absence.

Clovers is Sonya Cunningham and her Prism is Puck. She is based on clovers/clubs, medieval peasants, luck, and 1920’s flapper girls. She is the strategist of the team. As a civilian she is a bit of a hippie, loves painting, and is always in her own world.

Epic the musical Poseidon fanart/design with a new sketchbook that I can finally use paint markers with! I drew this with "Like You Mean It" stuck in my head lol.

Third Life is about 3,616.53 minutes or 2 days, 12 hours, 16 minutes, and 32 seconds with each episode being about 36 min and 9 seconds long and having a total of 100 episodes.

Last Life is about 4,634.98 minutes, or 3 days, 5 hours, 14 minutes, and 59 seconds with each episode being about 36 minutes and 47 seconds long and having a total of 126 episodes.

Double Life is about 2,889.22 minutes, or 2 days, 9 minutes, and 49 seconds with each episode being about 36 minutes and 66 seconds long and having a total of 80 episodes.

Limited Life is about 3,446.57 minutes, or 2 days, 9 hours, 26 minutes, and 34 seconds with each episode being about 34 minutes and 7 seconds long and having a total of 101 episodes.

Secret Life is about 6,004.83 minutes, or 4 days, 4 hours, 4 minutes, and 50 seconds with each episode being about 41 minutes and 42 seconds long and having 144 episodes. (Etho combined sessions 8 and 9, but Jimmy had an episode after his death so it balances out)

Wild Life is about 6,095.53 minutes, or 4 days, 5 hours, 35 minutes, and 5 seconds with each episode being about 43 minutes and 32 seconds long and having a total of 140 episodes.

Real Life (If your including it) is about 399.87 minutes, or 6 hours, 39 minutes, and 52 seconds with each episode being about 30 minutes and 45 seconds long and having a total of 13 episodes.

Loving Wild Life so far, but haven't been able to watch too many perspectives. Why did they have to start it from midterms-finals?! 😭

I'm planning on doing group illustrations for each group and a solo one for Creaking!BigB, but school has been hectic (I just failed out of my math class as a STEM major 🙃) so they might be either late or a bit rushed.
