On the day that I am going to die, the sun hangs high in the sky

first, blinding white, before it simmers into the crimson of twilight

a bloodstain spread across billowing clouds.

It turns your brown eyes red, that light,

and I want to ask if you'll cry when it happens,

when my throat is in your hands, pulse stammering against your palms

right by your thumb, where I used to kiss you

the press of my mouth, the press of my heart, the press of your hands against my neck

your beauty makes me choke

and I want to kiss you again, before it's over.

On the day that I am dying, my blood stains the white sands red

bringing the ocean to the desert, oh, that wine-red sea,

you look so beautiful with my blood smeared across your lips

a violent lipstick dressing you up for my final moments

when I am bleeding out beneath you.

you're so pretty. Have I told you I love you today?

I want to, one last time, before it's over
