The plan wasn’t to save him, IT WAS TO GIVE SPOCK A PROPER FUNERAL. and Spock was literally told that he couldn’t complete Kolinahr (the ritual to rid all of his emotions) because he was still LONGING and they told him to go and sort it out, SO HE WENT BACK TO KIRK.
