And now I only see you in my holograms 🦌📺
I think it would be so interesting if the reason Alastor affiliated himself with Vox in the first place was because he sought sinners who showed great potential for power in the hope that they could free him from his dealer one day. What Vox saw in Alastor was an opportunity to climb the ladder in hell and he never blinked twice, while Alastor saw a potential friend who he could mould and shape and help grow so that eventually he will be on his side. He will help him amass power and souls and money, so that maybe... just maybe one day he would be strong enough to fight the battle Alastor can't. And if Alastor just so happened to get Vox to fall in love with him? Even better. And if Vox just happened to hear from the grapevine that Alastor was using himthe entire time, but he doesn't find out WHY? Well, now wouldn't that be complicated and sad.
Out of curiosity, what do you think Alastor's past as a human was like?
Viv has mentioned many times that Al is a character of duality. In episodes where he is particularly cruel (ep 5) they also make a point to show an unexpectedly soft side of him as well (hugging Mimzy)
How far does that soft side extend? I bring up his human life since most fans seem to be in agreement that Alastor had a very loving mother he cared for dearly. (Which is a headcanon I personally love because that guy needs to have at least one person who genuinely cared in his life and afterlife)
Do you think his affection for his mother is still something present after a century in hell? Would it affect any of his decisions ?

I absolutely love that Vivzie made him morally-complex because it enriches his character so much.
He is a cold-blooded, heartless killer that somehow still has a heart in his chest and that heart can be warm. Personally, I love the headcanon that he's a mama's boy; he seems to respect women more in general based on his relationships in the show. Which tells us that while his mom was loving, she could be a badass at times who knew how to hold her ground. I'd imagine she's one of those moms that yell at you and smack you over the head with a shoe if you say something dumb. It would be so sweet if he got that "don't take shit from others" from her.
But, I also think she might have inadvertently encouraged his behaviour. How or why remains ambiguous, but I personally believe it's little details like her possibly seeing a hidden violence in him, but not acknowledging it since he "needs to protect himself after all" or "my sweet boy could never do those things", or perhaps instilling in him a belief that he "needs to protect her and other people who might be in dire situations" or her constantly telling him what a wonderful, smart, brave man he's becoming etc. etc.
I like to think Alastor is very loyal to a select few people in his life. He's someone who is all too aware of the power and danger he exudes and I think that self-awareness would make him more conscious about how he treats people and how they perceive him. With his enemies, he revels in the fear he instills in them. While with his friends he would revel in the knowledge that they need him and that they rely on him. Because he's familiar with the games overlords play, of the trust that's as fickle as blade of grass, so he needs someone who he knows won't betray him. Eg. Husk because of his deal, eg. Mimzy who relies on him for help, eg. Rosie who relies on him as an ally, eg. Niffty who works for him and seems to genuinely like doing so, eg. his mom who is related to him. All of them have something that Alastor needs: to feel valued. He needs them just as much as they need him and whether or not he actually cares about his friends is overshadowed by that codependency. That's why he wouldn't betray that select few.
And we know he's an attention whore based on... well, everything about him. (Him trying to gauge interest from Carmilla and getting dissapointed. Him trying to defenestrate Lucifer from the hotel because with him there Alastor wouldn't be "needed" etc. etc)
I think that need to feel powerful and necessary might have subconsciously ingrained in him a sort of inner hatred for society. He thinks himself better, his ego is massive, and since society is so cruel and deceitful and perfidious, he will "rise above it" by using his power to even out the playing field by taking out the vilest among it (overlords, abusers etc.) and helping the less fortunate (eg. the comic with the sheep. I think that comic gave is a very interesting glimpse into Al's character). That "I'm not like the rest" is blaringly obvious from his condescending behaviour. That stubbornness to obey society doesn't reflect in just his actions, but in his ENTIRE appearance as well. He's adamant about radio being the best medium, even though no one uses it and it's old as shit. His clothes are a fashion travesty, that period blood colour almost lurid to the eyes along with the torn patches in his coat. His hair is just... awful. A red bob with an undercut that goes up to half his head. He REFUSES to conform to society's standards about what's acceptable, or trending, or popular. He hates it. Even though he has the power and means to acomplish all of it, to be successful, to be sheek, to dress conventionally attractive, he doesn't do it. Almost as a huge, rebellious "fuck you."
And I think that hidden detestation for society in general is all the more sparked by the fact that he's Creole and is witnessing firsthand the cruelty and injustice humans are capable of.
I just think he's a very interesting character. I love the ask and overall I don't think Alastor is too different as a demon to how he was as a human.
wouldn't it be uniquely awful if voxval turns out to be healthy. if he and vox cuddle, if they do aftercare, if they genuinely look out for each other. wouldn't it be especially painful for angel to see val being warm & happy & doting with vox immediately after forcing angel to work sixteen hours straight in the studio with no breaks. if we see more scenes like the end of poison, where angel is miserable and traumatized and then he looks out over the balcony and sees voxval tenderly holding hands. if we have to struggle with the painful reality that all too often, someone can be both a violent abuser and a caring boyfriend, and neither one negates the other
“Nooo dont go to heaven you are so sexy ahaha” the comic
I know a lot of people are hoping for it, but I actually kinda hate the idea of Vox hypnotizing Alastor. Not because I think it’s out of character or anything like that (man is a narcissistic villain it’s been known) but I just really like the idea of Vox simply not being able to.
Fair warning! A lot of this is based on my many headcanons 😅
I’ve heard people headcanon that Vox and Val are kind of neutralized against one another. Vox can’t smell Val’s smoke and Val can’t see Vox’s hypnosis. I like this a lot! Except (whoops I can’t remember if this is canon or just my headcanon) Val’s saliva is the aphrodisiac, meaning enough kissing or even spitting in Vox’s drink and he could be drugged. Similarly, I think with enough time and patience Vox could hypnotize Val or any other sinner that has an advantage by having poor eyesight. It’s probably harder to start and maintain, but it can be done. And I love the idea that with enough patience and cleverness Vox and Val are dangerous to each other! I think it’d work super well with their dynamic in the show of them being partners who care about one another and are working together but could be pushed to betray one another for the right price! It’d be hard to convince them, just as it’d be hard for it to actually work, but it can be done.
Now back to Vox and Alastor, I want it to be impossible for Vox to hypnotize Al. Oh he can try. He can keep Alastor bound and staring at him forever and it still wouldn’t work. Why? Not because he’s too powerful or smart or anything like that but simply because they’re too similar.
(Another headcanon whoops) I like to think Vox can hypnotize people because he can manipulate people’s brain waves the same way you would radio waves. He can turn on and off signals to parts of the brain the same way you tune in to get a good signal. Essentially, he forces them to follow and listen to his signals.
But then there’s Alastor, the radio demon, the one who can broadcast to all of hell with nothing more than a thought. Alastor, who has been manipulating signals and radio waves long before Vox was even in Hell. It just doesn’t work on him. He can’t be brute forced switched like Vox usually does or even gently coaxed and proded like with Val. They’re already broadcasting on the same radio waves, after all, and while television might dominate that space now, it has always been mastered and belonged to radio, to Alastor. He’s immune simply from how he functions alone. Vox would be better off trying to screw with the signals to give Alastor a migraine than he ever would be trying to hypnotize him.
And I think ultimately this would represent their relationship very well too! Vox may have more going for him in this modern age (may have advantages like hypnosis) but Alastor is older. He doesn’t need to rely on tricks when his reputation alone is enough to get him where he needs to be. Besides, they’re two halves of the same coin (I say in delusional Radiostatic). They use the same radio waves, know each other’s frequency by heart, and can always tune in to one another’s signals. They’re equals no matter what fancy powers Vox develops or how many years Alastor disappears. They were always going to be equals the second Vox fell to Hell because they are the only two who can manipulate the radio waves, an entire powerful subsection of Hell just for the two of them. My guess is that’s why Alastor was ever interested in Vox in the first place.
But beyond shipping I do hope we get to see just how similar and connected they are in season two. I really do think it would be much more symbolic if Vox can’t hypnotize Alastor no matter how hard he tries (just like he can’t get Alastor to respect him no matter what he does) when that should really be the one thing he has over Al. No matter how powerful Vox gets or what he does, Alastor is always going to be just out of reach. And for a man like Vox who seems to always get what he wants, I think that might drive him to do some absolutely wild things in the next season.
(And of course for Alastor it’s a safety and a relief. He can remain confident that he can always best Vox no matter what. No matter how much more Vox seems to grow than him, he’s fine in the past and his stagnation and his ideals. Vox is obviously wrong about his whole philosophy, he has to be. The TV’s evolution could never truly pose a threat to him, could it?)
There's something about those radiostatic depictions where Vox is ruthless and evil in the eyes of everyone but Alastor that makes me so gooey and happy. Alastor, who's hell's version of a nightmare, a despicable, eldritch monster plaguing people's minds, but has a soft spot for this odd television man. Alastor who is fully aware of the cunning and ambition of this sinner but still chooses to be gentle with him, as though he's something fragile, something precious, something important, something worth cherishing. And Vox who sees this bloodthirsty killer who can snuff him out like a light, but instead chooses to see the man hiding underneath. Vox who just can't be afraid of Alastor even if he tried to. I love unhinged, toxic radiostatic, but soft radiostatic you will always have my heart
