RWatHT - Chapter 13: The Demonstration Match II

“We’ll take a quick break,” said Hufflepuff. “Before the duels start. Feel free to head to the Great Hall for a quick meal. Champions you may go first. Next, it is the students’ turn. And then, the professors’ and the staff.”

The Champions stood up and looked at each other, before Ron held his stomach. All four of them were hungry as they had eaten nothing that morning as they were preparing for their entrances. The four stared at each other before they began walking towards the same direction, then Cedric glanced at his right looking at Luna and sped up slightly. Ron looked to his own right seeing Cedric speeding up and he too sped up. It only took all but four seconds for the four of them to begin sprinting towards the Great Hall.

When Ron arrived at the Great Hall, neck to neck with the others he found himself staring at the feast prepared for the whole school. He looked at the others, Luna for some reason had a panting smile on her face, while Cedric held a smirk of his own. Daphne Greengrass, however, was the only one similar who seemed completely serious.

The four dug in as they sat at their separate tables. Ron couldn’t help but to stare at Daphne Greengrass as she elegantly cut her food before putting a piece of steak in her mouth and chewing slowly like a real snob.

Ron for his part didn’t really care about being appropriate as he shoved entire spoonfuls of food inside his mouth.

‘She’s bloody crazy,’ thought Ron. ‘Honestly, she cut that graphorn like it was nothing. She’s so–’

——————————————————————————————————

‘Bloody annoying,’ thought Daphne. ‘There’s no way anyone, and Ron Weasley at that, can get that good in such a short amount of time. It’s so obvious he’s just a–’

——————————————————————————————————

‘Bloody maniac is what she is.’

Students began to pour in the Great Hall, the professors’ close behind the large group of students. Most of the students came barreling through the entrance and went straight to the Champions as they congratulated them. Harry and Hermione sat beside Ron.

“That was amazing, Ron,” she said as she sat down hugging him. Ron’s ears went red. “Are you sure you’re alright?”

“Y-yeah,” said Ron, clearing his head. “Yeah, I’m alright. Madame Pomfrey only said it was a broken rib, nothing she couldn’t fix.”

Ron’s friends nodded, before they had to do a double take as they watched the Gryffindor Champion continue with his meal as if he hadn’t just revealed a critical injury for most people.

“What?!” almost everyone exclaimed.

“What?” said Ron looking around as he swallowed the piece of steak he had been chewing. “It’s nothing, really.”

“Nothing?!” shrieked Hermione. “Ron, a broken rib is a serious injury, you can’t just say it’s nothing!”

“Oh come on,” said Ron. “This stuff would make Dementors blush.”

“No, seriously, Ron,” continued Hermione, her tone a mix of worry and admonishment. “You broke your arm during the last Quidditch Match and just put it back as if it was nothing, and then there was about a month and a half ago when Harry and I found you passed out on the floor of the Quidditch Locker Rooms, Gryffindor had said that you had been too exhausted from your training with him and you still went to Quidditch Practice.”

——————————————————————————————————

As Hermione said all this Ron tried his best not to choke on a piece of pork he had shoved in his mouth a little too forcefully. The two continued to throw argument after argument before they decided to resign themselves to their meals.

Harry stared between his two best friends, and while just a few weeks ago he would’ve been relieved to see them bicker like always he internally called his past self from three weeks ago a fool.

——————————————————————————————————

Hufflepuff clapped loudly and everyone stopped what they were doing, excited for the next part of the Match that day. The duels. Everyone made their way back to the Quidditch Pitch. Ron watched as Harry, Hermione, Ginny and the twins were taking to the Gryffindor high tower in the stands as he’d asked. Other people were also brought to other towers, Sue Li, Neville and Padma Patil went to the Ravenclaw tower, while Ernie MacMillan, Hannah Abbott and Tamsin Applesbee were led to the Hufflepuff one. Ron wasn’t surprised to see that only Astoria Greengrass, Daphne’s sister, had been chosen for the Slytherin tower.

The sorting hat once more began to float, but this time she went to each and one of the Champions. Like Gryffindor instructed Ron, he put a piece of parchment with his name inside the hat as did the other from what he could see.

The hat floated to the side of the field and began to murmur before seemingly chewing on nothing, before he spat something out. A small ball of parchment paper suddenly exploded into a ball of fire, and Ron seemed to appear in the middle of the air, with his Tournament robes and sword. His name appeared above the sort of translucent image of him.

The hat spat something out once more, once more a small ball of parchment paper was spat into the air, but this time it turned into dust and exploded into a small sand balloon. Cedric with his robes, wand and mallet appeared in the air looking like a ghost, similar to Ron. His name above him.

“Ron Weasley and Cedric Diggory, make your way to the field!” Shouted the sorting hat.

A lot of people like to say that Ron's second house is either Hufflepuff because of the movies or Slytherin simply because of the scene with the Mirror of Erised in the Philosopher's Stone, but in my opinion that's not it. Movie Ron is not Book Ron, and Ron does not aim to be those things that are shown in the Mirror of Erised, he simply desires them. His aim is towards helping his friends, and having fun playing chess or Quidditch. He is more quick-witted that people give him credit for, and more knowledgeable as well. He also had a certain wisdom to him, knowing things or perceiving them in such a way that he sometimes predicts things that will happen. Like predicting that Lockhart was a fraud. He even told Hermione that someone as powerful like Dumbledore could be tricked by a really clever Dark wizard (Grinderwald).

And Hermione would definitely be a Slytherin. Outside of the fact that she literally created two organizations with the aim to defy an authority (S.P.E.W and the D.A.). She was determined, resourceful and clever, which are all Slytherin traits. She was also more vicious in certain aspects that people sometimes ignore. Marietta Edgecombe comes to mind, as well as Rita Skeeter, or sending Ron those birds.

unpopular opinion:

If they weren’t in gryffindor, Ron would be a ravenclaw and Hermione would be a slytherin.

ron is logical and strategic, often has great and practical ideas. hermione is ambitious, resourceful and determined. it makes sense to me.

RWaHT - Chapter 11: Beating Flaming Hearts

RWaHT - Chapter 11: Beating Flaming Hearts

“H-Helena?” Gryffindor breathed out, and Ron felt suddenly uncomfortable being in the same room as the two. The Grey Lady seemed like she had been the one to stare at a ghost, but Ron saw as her eyes suddenly filled with silver tears and she floated away. Gryffindor seemed rooted to his spot as if he had been petrified in his place, but something seemed to shake him off from his daze.

“Helena, wait!” Gryffindor said as he reached out to the Grey Lady, but it was too late by the time he had taken his first step she had rounded the corner and passed through the ceiling above.

Ron’s master had a face of pure rejection and grief, Gryffindor sank down to his knees as his head bowed down in defeat. Ron looked around checking for anyone that could be nearby, seeing no one he walked to Gryffindor’s side. Gryffindor looked heartbroken, he wore a similar expression to the one Ron had sometimes spotted on Sirius’ expression whenever his time at Azkaban was mentioned, or Harry’s parents.

Gryffindor was tall, taller even than Ron’s father who was the tallest adult, besides Hagrid, he’d ever met. His large body made it hard for Ron to find a way to sit down without looking like a midget. Still he stayed by his side as he stared down at the floor like a defeated man. He turned his head and looked at Ron giving the young Weasley a strained smile he ruffled Ron with his large hand and looked at him amusedly.

“You need a haircut, ginger cub,” he said. He stood up to his full height, cleaned invisible dust off Ron’s shoulders and cleared his throat. “Well, I think I’ll go to sleep tonight. Make sure you rest, Ron. Good night.”

“Master Gryffindor?” but Gryffindor was already walking away, a somber aura surrounding him as he walked the halls of Hogwarts alone. Ron looked at the retreating figure of his mentor and tried to follow him, but as soon as he took a step in his trail Gryffindor’s voice boomed across the hallway.

“Go back to your dorm and forget about it, Ronald,” it was intimidating, like a lion who could talk instead of roar, but Ron only looked at his mentor as he walked away. Ron debated going back to the Common Room as Gryffindor suggested, but instead he followed his mentor as he roamed the halls of Hogwarts. The cold night offered no warmth for Ron, yet he didn’t mind it. Gryffindor had comforted him when he had made a fool of himself in his first Quidditch Match, trying to help him was the least he could do.

He followed him to the training room where Ron could see that Gryffindor had sat down on a chair with his head in his hands. The older wizard seemed exhausted, like someone who’d just gone through a war, and Ron wouldn’t be surprised if he had. Gryffindor lifted his head, and Ron froze in his spot, the older wizard sighed and conjured a second chair giving Ron the hint to sit down.

Gryffindor had taken off his gloves and rolled up the sleeves of his top leaving his numerous scars out in the open. It was haunting the amount he had, some were so disturbingly complex that they almost looked like tattoos, and Ron wondered to himself what kind of magic could do that.

“Magic that can kill you,” Gryffindor almost growled, his voice seemed raspy as if he had just let out a scream and had lost his voice. The two stayed silent, Ron trying his best to keep his mind blank so that Gryffindor couldn’t read it.

“Master?” Gryffindor hummed, signaling Ron to ask the question he knew the young boy had.

“Are you alright?”

——————————————————————————————————

Gryffindor clearly hadn’t expected that, but he still managed to hide his surprise. What was he supposed to say? Yes, I’m alright young Ronald, I’ve only seen the ghost of my daughter for the first time because believe it or not I’m actually the most cowardly man you have ever met. He rubbed his eyes trying very hard to extinguish the tears before they even threatened to escape his eyes. Gryffindor shook his head.

Ron only nodded and stayed silent. Something gnawed at his mind, and Gryffindor must have underestimated his mind skills, because even though he knew Ron wanted to desperately ask something he wouldn’t reveal what it was, no matter what.

Gryffindor didn’t know how long the two had stayed like that. Almost frozen in time as his thoughts dwelled on Helena. She hadn’t changed, not one bit. A mirror of his mother in every single way from her black eyes to her sleek black hair and pale skin. He couldn’t have been more proud when he was born, because even when she looked almost nothing like him except for her freckles she was everything he could ever hope for in a daughter.

RWatHT - Chapter 10: Scorching Rivalries

RWatHT - Chapter 10: Scorching Rivalries

As Ron stared out of a window of the Hogwarts Express he sensed his hand trembling. That often happened when he thought about Moody’s words. He wasn’t scared, he knew that wasn’t the problem. No, the real problem was that he was quite the opposite from scared, he was excited, abnormally so. There was a fire that raged inside him, not a physical one. The physical fire hadn’t made an appearance since his incident in the bathroom.

‘Bad phrasing,’ thought Ron.

Jokes and puns aside, Ron couldn’t help it. It was a new sort of feeling, similar to the nervousness before a Quidditch match, all with the nausea, the sweating, the fidgeting, except the exact opposite. He didn’t feel like vomiting because he was afraid, but because he was completely unable to think about anything else. That must have been the reason, because otherwise, it would mean that he was… That he felt…

No, he’d rather think about the excitement of it all. Whatever was happening Ron thought Gryffindor knew what was going on, after all he had sent a Patronus just moments after his first… Whatever the hell was happening to him. It couldn’t be a simple coincidence.

Ron’s dreams were also falling towards the weirder side. More often than not he dreamt of the same cave, with the silver shaft that stuck out of the ground and always managed to allure Ron enough for him to walk into the fiery trap. However, to his relief not every night was similar, some nights he would dream of a certain someone. They would be holding their hands, fingers intertwined with one another. They’d stared at each other in the eye before Ron would lean in and his lips would find hers.

Ever since Hermione’s second kiss he had become far more, infatuated with his bookworm best friend. He found himself staring at her far more than he used to, observing and admiring her curls as she read a book. Her nose scrunching as she put all of her focus on a book of hers, every fiber in Ron’s being wanted to walk over to her and kiss her on the tip of her nose. She would smile, and although she had gotten rid of her fairly large front teeth Ron could sometimes imagine her laughing with them, it gave her a sort of childish look so different from the nagging and bossy girl he had come to know for years now.

When they were on the Knight Bus on their way to Hogsmeade Ron took the chance to open some of his mail. During the holidays he had gotten a few more letters than he usually got, most probably because of his status as Champion of Gryffindor. He opened some of them up. He got some chocolates from Dean and Seamus, gillyweed gum from Neville which apparently gave webbed hands as well as some other sweets from Cedric and Angelina Johnson. He finally got to a letter from Luna which he read over quickly. Half of it was about the usual weird, strange and probably imaginary creatures that she and her barmy father believed in, however when he got to the last part he almost choked on his chocolate. Harry noticed and Ron simply pointed to the part that had interested him so much. He saw as his speckled best friend’s eyes seemed to almost pop out of the frames of his glasses and his eyebrows shot up his fringe.

As he walked into the castle accompanied by Harry, Hermione and his family he couldn’t help, but notice how people kept staring at them. Particularly he and his siblings. The day he arrived he didn’t Gryffindor anywhere, he seemed to have left the school and nobody knew.

The next day he took Hermione aside towards the common room when he saw Cho Chang speak with Harry after a double-Potions lesson. She looked at him weirdly, but he only smirked when he saw her confusion. Once they were inside their common room Ron sat Hermione down, she seemed to catch on to what Ron was trying to do.

The point of practicality is also not a good one when you take into consideration the fact that Hogwarts has owls that students can use, but not things like replacement wands or something like that. Ron had to spend his whole second year with a broken wand, and there was nothing he could do to replace it. If Percy's owl had broken its wing or somehow died he could have still used a school owl.

A big argument that I have seen against Molly that people say proves she plays favorites is how in the first book, she buys Percy an owl for making Prefect while not bothering to get Ron a new wand. And my question is HOW MUCH DO PEOPLE THINK AN OWL COSTS?!? The price of an owl has to be very nominal next to something like a wand. It’s not like Molly choose between two comparable things, like a pet and a new book bag. In which case, if the book bag is still usable, why should she not get a new pet to reward Percy for doing something great? The bag is perfectly fine if a little worn and it’s not that big of a deal to use it if the previous owner doesn’t need it. Comparing the price of a wand and an owl is like wondering why this family didn’t get Ron a brand new $1500 MacBook when his brother’s old one still works. And then telling the parents they are horrible people for buying their other son a $20 toy instead. I mean, if they bought one son a toy, surely they can have gotten the brand new laptop instead. But instead Ron has to use an old laptop that still works while his brother is obviously the favorite for getting a toy for a job well done. I mean, Ron needs that laptop for school and it’s necessary. Percy’s toy isn’t necessary and he could have done without.

This isn’t a moment of favoritism, it’s a moment of practicality. Molly and Arthur were able to wrangle enough money for an owl because it is much cheaper than a wand.

Although you said it wasn’t Ron slander this very much sounded like Ron slander. So I’m going to point out a few things that I disagreed with using facts from the books.

“I feel I owe you another explanation, Harry," said Dumbledore hesitantly. "You may, perhaps, have wondered why I never chose you as a prefect? I must confess… that I rather thought… you had enough responsibility to be going on with."

Dumbledore didn’t give Ron the prefect badge because of not wanting to hurt his feelings. He did it because Harry had too much going on, and making him a prefect would be too much for him. Ron was just the second-best option.

He had forgotten completely about prefects being chosen in the fifth year. He had been too anxious about the possibility of being expelled to spare a thought for the fact that badges must be winging their way towards certain people. But if he had remembered… if he had thought about it… what would he have expected?

Not this, said a small and truthful voice inside his head.

Harry screwed up his face and buried it in his hands. He could not lie to himself; if he had known the prefect badge was on its way, he would have expected it to come to him, not Ron. Did this make him as arrogant as Draco Malfoy? Did he think himself superior to everyone else? Did he really believe he was better than Ron?

No, said the small voice defiantly.

Was that true? Harry wondered, anxiously probing his own feelings.

I'm better at Quidditch, said the voice. But I'm not better at anything else.

Harry stated that he had actually forgotten about the prefect badge, and he said that if he had remembered he would’ve expected it to go to himself and not Ron. He also said that Ron and him aren’t that different in academic terms and the only good thing Harry is better at is flying (This is Harry’s perspective by the way).

And being a prefect wouldn’t be the only thing that Harry would’ve accomplished for himself: He became seeker on the Gryffindor Quidditch team in his first-year, something that rarely happens; He helped won the House Cup three years in a row; He got an award for special services from the school in his 2nd year; He won the Quidditch Cup in his third year.

Ron feels the way he does because of his childhood. He wouldn’t think about a world without his family because he’s had them all of his life. And of course Harry would be quick to change his life’s with Ron, he knows a life without a loving family and that’s the only thing he craves.

“Listen - Ron - well done, mate."

The smile faded off Ron's face.

“I never thought it would be me!" he said, shaking his head. "I thought it would be you!"

Ron wouldn’t have thrown a hissy fit either. He quite literally tells Harry that he was shocked that he was chosen instead of him. He expected it.

He was grinning, but it was a very odd, strained sort of grin. Harry suddenly became aware that he was still wearing the scarlet Gryffindor banner that Lee had tied around him. He hastened to take it off, but it was knotted very tightly. Ron lay on the bed without moving, watching Harry struggle to remove it.

“So," he said, when Harry had finally removed the banner and thrown it into a corner. "Congratulations."

Even in GoF Ron wanted to be glad for Harry being chosen as the Fourth Champion. And in OotP in the same chapter that Ron is appointed prefects Harry uses his experiences with Voldemort to justify why he should’ve been prefect. Not because he had suffered too much and he wanted this one simple thing, but because it was him that did it, not Ron.

But what about outside lessons? What about those adventures he, Ron and Hermione had had together since starting at Hogwarts, often risking much worse than expulsion?

Well, Ron and Hermione were with me most of the time, said the voice in Harry's head.

Not all the time, though, Harry argued with himself. They didn't fight Quirrell with me. They didn't take on Riddle and the Basilisk. They didn't get rid of all those Dementors the night Sirius escaped. They weren't in that graveyard with me, the night Voldemort returned…

He uses those traumatic experiences as an excuse to why he’s more qualified than Ron to be a school prefect when those things have nothing to do with school work or academic achievements.

I’m not trying to slander Harry, but he didn’t really care about the prefect badge. In fact he got over it pretty quickly. The only times he cared about it where when Malfoy abused his powers as a prefect.

Not Ron slander but the fact that Harry was going to be a prefect but Dumbledore gave it to Ron because he was worried about Ron’s feelings and the fact that he wooodve thrown a tantrum was so pathetic. It’s one of the things that make me dislike Ron. Everything Harry has are things he didn’t want or choose to have. He didn’t choose to the chosen one. He didn’t choose to be famous, especially when his fame is related to the death of both of his parents. He didn’t want to be rumored to be the heir of Slytherin. He didn’t choose to be the triwizard champion. Those are all things that were forced upon him without his consent and the fact that Ron throws a hissy fit about it because he doesn’t get anything or feel special is so pathetic and narrow minded. I don’t remember if Harry wanted to be a prefect but if he did, it wouldve been the only thing Harry wanted for himself and actually earned over the course of four traumatic years at Hogwarts. Facing Voldemort three times, watching Cedric die, and then still doing semi well in school. Like I understand that Ron feels the way he does because he’s from a big family and often gets overshadowed and forgotten but anyone can see Harry would switch their lives in a hot second because Ron has a stable home life with loving parents. They might not have much but it’s all Harry ever wanted and Ron is pressed about things that are getting Harry injured, almost killed, and more traumatized. It’s quite ignorant in my opinion.
