You Go Man, Tell Em

This is EXACTLY what I tell people when I explain why I love his character so much!! He's not just any villain. He's a man who was fucked over by the world before he was even born. His actions are still wrong but like, honestly? With how inhumanely he was treated, it was only a matter of time before he snapped under the pressure, and who's to blame him? I certainly don't. In fact, I would have succumbed to insanity as well if I was in his position.

The world didn't give him a chance at life, even when he was only a mere concept. Why give back to a world that never gave anything to you? Genesis was just his breaking point.

Even if his life wasn't good before, he at least had Genesis and Angeal by his side. He cared for them SO MUCH, only for them to betray his trust after they gave him a reason to live. Those two were the sliver of hope in his grim reality, and not even they truly cared for him-- Angeal really only cared for Genesis and Genesis, himself. If they hadn't led him stumbling head first into false hope, Sephiroth might not have broken the way he had. He still would have eventually broken, yes, but possibly in a different, less extreme sense. Perhaps even one without so much bloodshed.

Shinra treated him as a tool, and it seemed Genesis and Angeal did as well. And if a tool isn't given proper care, it's prone to rust and eventually shatter. It was only a matter of time-- those two just quickened the inevitable.

Zack was the only one who treated him like a human being, but by the point he entered Sephiroth's life, it was already too late.

The reason Sephiroth is such an interesting villain even if you haven't played the games comes down to three words.

It's easy to say "JRPG Villain craves power and injects themselves with forbidden magic power juice to become stronger". It's easy to say "Evil company made super soldiers using extreme biological and chemical injects so no one can combat them".

When explaining Sephiroth, no one expects "Sephiroth was injected with alien DNA in the womb."

Those three words change the perspective completely. He wasn't a power hungry villain before he lost his mind. He had his life fucked over and now he wants the planet taken down with him. He was never given a choice, and I think that's the most interesting part of his back story.

FF7R Mini Theory: Hollow and the Sefirot

So I've been noticing something regarding Hollow and the Kabbalah (it's way too complicated to explain here, but it's basically just Jewish mystism). Anyways, in the Kabbalah, there are these divine attributes called the sefirot from which God would reveal himself. It's also very important because this is where Sephiroth got his name from.

There's also the polar opposite of the sefirot, the qliphoth. The qlipoth that protects the sefirot much like how a peel protects a fruit. The qlipoth are also known to be called "empty shells/husks"

It's like there... hollow inside. Just like Cloud Strife himself

So without these sefirot (divine attributes) that manifest in the physical and spiritual realms, the universe will basically descend into chaos, which is the last thing we want. Cloud and Sephiroth during the edge of creation scene represent the universes of creation (Cloud) and death (Sephiroth), yin and yang,

The Qliphoth and the holy Sefirot

Well...without the sefirot, what will the qlipoth's purpose be? They are now empty, hollow shells, kinda like how Cloud's mind is shattered and how he wants to be whole again, yet he needs to regain his true self in order to do so. The sefirot makes the qlipoth complete, just like how Cloud becomes complete with Sephiroth.

Huh.

I always thought Cloud is anti-social because of all the mountain of trauma that piled up on him but I am reading Traces of Two Pasts and apparently... that's just his personality?

He was like that since he was a kid.

It breaks my heart to think that Zack was just so aggressively friendly and hyperactively cheerful that he broke through to him. Cloud didn't make any friends and then Zack comes along "You're from a small village? I'm from a small village. Best friends forever!"

And there's no stopping Zack. He invites Cloud out for dinner. While. Cloud. Is. Barfing. He made him elbow bump! He even figured out why Cloud is hiding under his helmet and told him Tifa is alright. He made him open up about wanting to be a SOLDIER within 5 minutes they met, something Cloud didn't even tell his mom.

I'm just internally screaming how close poor Cloud was to being pulled out of his shell. Zack would have done it. I bet Zack would have even convinced him to tell Tifa he was there. Instead it turned into one of the most traumatic experiences for Cloud (and us) and made him pull inward even more.

Where was I going with this? I had a point.

Right. I guess I just wanted to say I was surprised he had pretty much the same quiet friendless personality when he was a child before all of *motions to endless Compilation of Final Fantasy VII trauma* happened. And that he was so close to being happy.

I noticed something in the new FF7 Rebirth trailer

Sephiroth reveals the nature of Jenova and her ability but why?

Sephiroth never even revealed Jenova like this in the OG as a part of his plan, so why is he doing this? Isn't revealing her nature the last thing Sephiroth wanted to do?

Here's what I think is happening, Sephiroth is being forced to work against Cloud. He traveled back in time, still tethered to Jenova, hoping to stop her and save the planet from whatever destiny it's tethered to (yet it also has consequences as we see in the alternative timeline)

Sephiroth is doing this of his own will

Yet he's still shackled to Jenova, so he needs Cloud's help in order to break free from her, but Jenova is taking advantage of Cloud's shattered mental state and false persona, so it's like a godly game of tug a war.

I think the Sephiroth who's manipulating Cloud and trying to convince him that Tifa isn't real is the past version of him from the OG, while the real Sephiroth, the one who we've been following all along, is trying to break free from destiny's grasp, stop Jenova and save the planet.

I could be wrong, and this is just a retelling of the OG, but I don't buy that one bit, especially when both the developers and part of the story say otherwise. Anyways, that's what I grabbed from this scene.
