What Are Your Thoughts On People Saying That 2521 Is Problematic For Portraying A Relationship That Began

what are your thoughts on people saying that 2521 is problematic for portraying a relationship that began when heedo was a minor & yijin, an adult?

people should practice thinking sometimes. it helps a lot

i will try to be systematic here, so i'll present some points in list form. i've already addressed people's general idiocy in this post, so i'll try to keep things short because i don't want to waste energy fighting every person with a different opinion from mine.

a relationship is "problematic" as in "harmful" when there is lack of consent, or when the relationship is toxic for at least one party. hee do and yi jin did not participate in any sexual activity when she was 18 and he was 22, and they have never been toxic towards each other.

the show's entire focus is on how two people with a four-year age difference who meet at 18 and 22 can have a healthy romantic relationship eventually. the writing constantly brings the characters' differences and similarities into focus, both in terms of their age difference and in terms of their personalities. we see them develop their relationship through countless hours of talking, hanging out, providing each other emotional support, developing feelings. it takes eight entire episodes for one of the characters to really examine any sexual attraction they feel, and this character is the younger woman, who is also the person who takes every step towards crossing physical boundaries with the other. at no point is she taken advantage of for her lack of experience, her naivete, or her willingness to start a romantic relationship when she's 19. yi jin could have easily turned her head back then, but that's neither the person he is, nor the value he places in their relationship. the show emphasized emotional connection long before it even introduced physical attraction, and it's quite impressive to me that people still decided to feel bothered.

relationships with an age gap happen all the time in real life, and the role of art is to dramatize and discuss real life for its audience. the aim of this show is partly to demonstrate how such a relationship can occur in a healthy and natural manner, in which both parties are pursuing the well-being of the other. in this way, the show proves that a relationship with an age gap is not inherently exploitative, but can be anything both parties create with the way they treat each other.

the show has been vocal about the difficulty of defining such a relationship, and the characters have taken very careful steps to give names or actions to their feelings as they grow. in no instance has any romantic development been rushed or handled poorly. by the time the younger woman initiates a kiss, the age difference has become as irrelevant as it is between people in their twenties. if a first-year university student was dating a fourth-year student she's been close friends with for two years, would anyone find it "problematic"?

it's almost impossible to change someone's opinion if they're not willing to accept that they could be wrong. it makes me sad that such an incredibly-written show is still unable to inspire critical thought in some segments of its audience, because the majority of my points have been so clearly demonstrated in scenes that they must be visible from space. nevertheless, i'm persisting.

@staff please don't let the twitter users who are inevitably going to come here due to the elon purchase bully you into changing things.

Don't make tumblr a second twitter. We love our hellsite(affectionate) exactly how it is. they can get used to it or leave. Tis a delicate ecosystem here.

I Am So Ready To Witness The Downward Spiral That Is Aemond's Regency (affectionate).

I am so ready to witness the downward spiral that is Aemond's regency (affectionate).

The man had made his desire for Aegon's position his entire personality growing up. Why does Aegon get to be the firstborn son? Why does Aegon take for granted all the tools granted to him to ensure his ascension as King? Why does mommy waste all her attention and effort on fixing Aegon?

Aemond is BETTER. Aemond is competent. Aemond can surrender to the demands of duty if that is what it takes to be King (a.k.a to be taken seriously and be respected despite of his disability, despite of Viserys ignoring him, despite of Rhaenyra being named heir).

Rook's Rest happens and FINALLY Aemond's shot at the Throne is here. He's almost mad with power, having been bestowed upon all the privileges he's only ever dreamed of as a boy. He gets to make all the moves Aegon, Criston, Alicent and Otto are unwilling to entertain. He gets to speak his mind and have people enact HIS orders.

He knows what's best, he seriously believes. It's always been him that's known. It was always him that would be better at this. Surely, he would give the Greens a quick victory! Mayhaps as penitence for his own sins against them, for inadvertently starting a war in Storm's End none of them had prepared for that spiralled into a series of tragedies.

When Aemond makes up his mind to take Harrenhal he is sure victory is secured. He sees forgiveness in the horizon for himself and from his family. He's got this.

But when he arrives to find Daemon nowhere in sight, that his efforts were wasted and King's Landing under siege ... Aemond shrivels. All hope is gone. His chance at redemption dead. His reputation and capabilities as Prince Regent destroyed! He is nothing now, just like he'd felt for much of his boyhood under Viserys' neglect and after Lucerys permanently disabled him without consequence.

Duty, honor...what are they in the face of defeat, death and despair? Aemond quickly cloaks himself with darkness like the void he has become. A new identity, colder and darker than the one from his violated past rises from the ashes.

Blood he craves. Hatred he breathes. Darkness he will embrace. Madness becomes him afterwards and I cannot wait to see him let go.

This might be a hot take, but I actually like that Percy figured out Luke was the traitor at the last minute. There were A LOT of clues that would’ve been hard to ignore, and he ignored them for as long as he could. And it’s clear that even after accusing Luke, he’s still surprised and heartbroken at Luke’s confirmation of his suspicions. He was holding out hope, guys!!

Also, the Betrayal Scene flows better as an exchange of dialogue and a swordfight than it did, in the books, as a monologue and a scorpion sting. This also leaves a bigger impact on the viewers and characters because it’s more emotional.

Rick Riordan’s response to the racism and hatred directed at Leah after she was cast as Annabeth:

“Leah Jeffries is Annabeth Chase”

“This post is specifically for those who have a problem with the casting of Leah Jeffries as Annabeth Chase. It’s a shame such posts need to be written, but they do. First, let me be clear I am speaking here only for myself. These thoughts are mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect or represent the opinions of any part of Disney, the TV show, the production team, or the Jeffries family.

The response to the casting of Leah has been overwhelmingly positive and joyous, as it should be. Leah brings so much energy and enthusiasm to this role, so much of Annabeth’s strength. She will be a role model for new generations of girls who will see in her the kind hero they want to be.

If you have a problem with this casting, however, take it up with me. You have no one else to blame. Whatever else you take from this post, we should be able to agree that bullying and harassing a child online is inexcusably wrong. As strong as Leah is, as much as we have discussed the potential for this kind of reaction and the intense pressure this role will bring, the negative comments she has received online are out of line. They need to stop. Now.

I was quite clear a year ago, when we announced our first open casting, that we would be following Disney’s company policy on nondiscrimination: We are committed to diverse, inclusive casting. For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to disability, gender, race and ethnicity, age, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other basis prohibited by law. We did that. The casting process was long, intense, massive and exhaustive.

I have been clear, as the author, that I was looking for the best actors to inhabit and bring to life the personalities of these characters, and that physical appearance was secondary for me. We did that.  We took a year to do this process thoroughly and find the best of the best. This trio is the best. Leah Jeffries is Annabeth Chase.

Some of you have apparently felt offended or exasperated when your objections are called out online as racist. “But I am not racist,” you say. “It is not racist to want an actor who is accurate to the book’s description of the character!”

Let’s examine that statement.

You are upset/disappointed/frustrated/angry because a Black actor has been cast to play a character who was described as white in the books. “She doesn’t look the way I always imagined.”

You either are not aware, or have dismissed, Leah’s years of hard work honing her craft, her talent, her tenacity, her focus, her screen presence. You refuse to believe her selection could have been based on merit. Without having seen her play the part, you have pre-judged her (pre + judge = prejudice) and decided she must have been hired simply to fill a quota or tick a diversity box. And by the way, these criticisms have come from across the political spectrum, right and left.

You have decided that I couldn’t possibly mean what I have always said: That the true nature of the character lies in their personality. You feel I must have been coerced, brainwashed, bribed, threatened, whatever, or I as a white male author never would have chosen a Black actor for the part of this canonically white girl.

You refuse to believe me, the guy who wrote the books and created these characters, when I say that these actors are perfect for the roles because of the talent they bring and the way they used their auditions to expand, improve and electrify the lines they were given. Once you see Leah as Annabeth, she will become exactly the way you imagine Annabeth, assuming you give her that chance, but you refuse to credit that this may be true.

You are judging her appropriateness for this role solely and exclusively on how she looks. She is a Black girl playing someone who was described in the books as white.

Friends, that is racism.

And before you resort to the old kneejerk reaction — “I am not racist!” — let’s examine that statement too.

If I may quote from an excellent recent article in the Boston Globe about Dr. Khama Ennis, who created a program on implicit bias for the Massachusetts Board of Registration for Medicine in Boston: “To say a person doesn’t have bias is to say that person isn’t human. It’s how we navigate the world … based on what we’re taught and our own personal histories.”

Racism/colorism isn’t something we have or don’t have. I have it. You have it. We all do. And not just white people like me. All people. It’s either something we recognize and try to work on, or it’s something we deny. Saying “I am not racist!” is simply declaring that you deny your own biases and refuse to work on them.

The core message of Percy Jackson has always been that difference is strength. There is power in plurality. The things that distinguish us from one another are often our marks of individual greatness. You should never judge someone by how well they fit your preconceived notions. That neurodivergent kid who has failed out of six schools, for instance, may well be the son of Poseidon. Anyone can be a hero.

If you don’t get that, if you’re still upset about the casting of this marvelous trio, then it doesn’t matter how many times you have read the books. You didn’t learn anything from them.

Watch the show or don’t. That’s your call. But this will be an adaptation that I am proud of, and which fully honors the spirit of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, taking the bedtime story I told my son twenty years ago to make him feel better about being neurodivergent, and improving on it so that kids all over the world can continue to see themselves as heroes at Camp Half-Blood.”

tweet from Abed A. Ayoub @aayoub
The 5 day cease fire is welcomed. We need a full cease fire.

Something to keep an eye on. The cease fire coincides with the long holiday week in the US.

In addition, Israel has rolled out a massive PR campaign, which was evident this evening by watching TV.

So, for 5 days Americans will sit at home, watch football, and get flooded with pro-Israel ads.

11:39 PM 21 Nov 23

Meanwhile there is no bombing, and the timelines on social media platforms will probably have pictures of turkey and pies.

It’s important that you keep posting and speaking out about the ongoing genocide. This 5 day agreement is not the end of things.

do not stop talking about Palestine!

there are Shut It Down For Palestine actions planned for Friday, look for one in your area if you can. they're not all registered on the Shut It Down website, so check social media as well as their list.
