Earlier this evening I was driving on the highway to head to my writers group. I needed to change lanes to get to my exit and proceeded to do so, enjoying the scenic ride. That is until a car horn starts and continues to blast behind me.
I turn to look and a giant truck has appeared behind me (I honestly didnât see it when I went to turn). And because the truck continued at its breakneck speed (while still blaring its horn at me, causing me to get even more flustered), I had to speed up to avoid getting rammed because another car was already coming up behind me in my original lane. But my car is little and old, and canât go 0 to 60 in 0.3 seconds, so the truck continued to blast its horn at me the whole time Iâm trying not to cause an accident.
I finally make it to my exit without crashing into anyone, but then my stomach sinks as I see the truck now riding my tail as I get off the exit. Now Iâm terrified this person is going to ram me out of spite.
The exit joins up to the town road, but you have to yield to oncoming traffic, so I do. The truck then suddenly swerves out from behind me, and as they rush by, the driver and his passenger flip me off as they scream profanities that consist of female slurs (which originally were just plain old words until some man decided to make them curses because they happened to be female centered terms).
Now Iâm really shaken up and am forced to drive behind them until the road splits into two. But horror of all horrors, I end up almost right next to them at a red light. I can feel them staring at me and Iâm now scared out of my mind.
Thankfully, a police car with its lights and sirens on drove past us, and that seemed to cool the trucktosterones down because they peeled off into the next side street and I didnât see them again.
All this to say, itâs probably men like these that are getting dumped because of the Barbie movie, and IâM GLAD.

For today I have a parking pass for my place of work and NEVER have to take the bus again! (Unless, of course, my car is in the shop), but other than that!
Never again must I worry about catching the right bus. Never have to worry about being too early or too late. Forced to wait at a bus stop covered in graffiti and unspeakable human fluids in the rain, heat, and snow.
Never again do I have to worry about getting a seat, let alone getting a seat that provides me some semblance of personal space. I wonât have to put my bags on the seat next to me to insure some perv doesnât force themselves upon me.
Never again will I be forced to listen to other peopleâs music and ticktock videos, babies wailing, and crotchety old men state their unwanted opinions loudly, as if we werenât in a confined space and canât hear them despite our headphones trying to drown them out.
Never again worry about unstable people causing scenes so violent and disturbing and mentally upsetting that I burst into a fit of tears and shakes the moment Iâm able to get home and feel safe again.
Never again.
STORY TIME:
I work in a decent sized, local, indie bookstore. Itâs a great job 99% of the time and a lot of our customers are pretty neat people. Any who, middle of the day this little old lady comes up. Sheâs lovably kooky. She effuses how much she loves the store and how she wishes she could spend more time in it but her husband is waiting in the car (OH! I BETTER BUY HIM SOME CHOCOLATE!), she piles a bunch of art supplies on the counter and then stops and tells me how my bangs are beautiful and remind her of the ocean (âWoooooshâ she says, making a wave gesture with her hand)
Ok. I think to myself. Awesomely happy, weird little old ladies are my favorite kind of customer. Theyâre thrilled about everything and theyâre comfortably bananas. I can have a good time with this one. So we chat and itâs nice.
Then this kid, whoâs been up my counter a few times to gather his school textbooks, comes up in line behind her (weâre connected to a major university in the city so we have a lot of harried students pass through). She turns around to him and, out of nowhere, demands that he put his textbooks on the counter. Heâs confused but she explains that sheâs going to buy his textbooks.
He goes sheetrock white. He refuses and adamantly insists that she canât do that. Itâs like, $400 worth of textbooks. She, this tiny old woman, bodily takes them out of her hands, throws them on the counter and turns to me with a intense stare and tells me to put them on her bill. The kid at this point is practically in tears. Heâs confused and shocked and grateful. Then she turns to him and says âyou need chocolate.â She starts grabbing handfuls of chocolates and putting them in her pile.
He keeps asking her âwhy are you doing this?â She responds âDo you like Harry Potter?â and throws a copy of the new Cursed Child on the pile too.
Finally sheâs done and I ring her up for a crazy amount of money. She pays and asks me to please give the kid a few bags for his stuff. While Iâm bagging up her merchandise the kid hugs her. Weâre both telling her how amazing she is and what an awesome thing sheâs done. She turns to both of us and says probably one of the most profound, unscripted things Iâve ever had someone say:
"Itâs important to be kind. You canât know all the times that youâve hurt people in tiny, significant ways. Itâs easy to be cruel without meaning to be. Thereâs nothing you can do about that. But you can choose to be kind. Be kind.â
The kid thanks her again and leaves. I tell her again how awesome she is. Sheâs staring out the door after him and says to me: âMy son is a homeless meth addict. I donât know what I did. I see that boy and I see the man my son could have been if someone had chosen to be kind to him at just the right time.â
Iâve bagged up all her stuff and at this point am super awkward and feel like I should say something but I donât know what. Then she turns to me and says: I wish I could have bangs like that but my darn hair is just too curly.â And leaves.
And that is the story of the best customer Iâve ever had. Be kind to somebody today.
Some of my favorite posts here on Tumblr:
Firstly, the ending of âThe Duck Knight Returns!â was my all time favorite ending to a Ducktales episode to date! All those little pieces coming together that paid homage to the original Darkwing Duck and weaving it into the most original superhero origin story Iâve across; Iâm still freaking out! All that potential for angst and deep stories! Whoever wrote that is a genius!
Iâm really hoping, now that weâve had that fabulous ending and all that promise, that weâll get to see more of Darkwing. Weâve gotten a good amount of Gizmoduck, so Iâm optimistic on seeing some Darkwing centered episodes in the new Ducktales.
Iâve been loving how the creative team on the 2017 Ducktales has been including content from the original source material (Dellaâs disappearance with the starship and Flinthart actually being South African - all things found in the original comics).Â
And with the team weaving in Launchpad as Darkwingâs sidekick in the episode, just like in the show, it got me thinking:
Now that weâve got a more solid backstory established for Darkwing/Drake Mallard, does this mean weâll see Gosalyn?
While she wasnât my favorite character in the original show (I applaud her voice actor, itâs such a recognizable voice - but for me, it was a little grating on my ears), I really liked the idea of her being around, and the story of an orphan being adopted is always touching.
But for the new version, Iâd like to make a suggestion:
Donât have the new DW/Drake adopt her.Â
Now before anyone gets mad: hear me out.
Iâm just suggesting a different candidate. I still want him to adopt a plucky girl that will keep him grounded; one that I think really deserves to have a family after all sheâs gone through.
Thatâs right, Iâm talking about:
Now that weâve got this girl back, I suggest that instead of bringing in Gosalyn, that DW/Drake should come across this (at this moment, assumedly homeless) plucky orphan and adopt her.Â
Lenaâs got the âkeeping it realâ attitude, sheâs already rocking the casual tee shirt shirt we saw on Gosalyn, and it would give the writers more ways to feature her in future episodes!
Okay, I might be a little bias because I love this character so much, but Iâm still saying her as DW/Drakeâs adopted daughter still works!
Ducktales staff, you should do this. Please.
Part 2
If youâve read my previous post, concerning the cookie cutter body types commonly found in romance novels, and my plan to subvert them, then you know my âtypeâ.
In a nutshell, I find Asian men highly attractive. And for quite a few reasons, most of which I canât really explain, and quite frankly, shouldnât have to. Human beings come in all shapes and sizes and their personal tastes are just as varied.
Sure, I could probably attribute several qualities to certain influences.
I really like Anime/Manga art and those guys tend to be thin/lithe, have no butts, and little to no mouth definition. And Asian men in real life tend to have beautiful cheekbones.
I also grew up with a father who, though Latino, can sometimes be mistaken for a Southeastern Asian man. And I am fortunate to have a father who has loved and cherished me my whole life, and I still respect to this day.
And while itâs hard for me to NOT find any given Asian man attractive, that doesnât mean theyâre my only type. Basically anyone who is thin, lacks a defined butt, has little lips, possesses defined cheekbones, and is under 5â10, Iâm going to find highly attractive. But they donât have to have all those features for me to find them attractive.
But there are two features that instantly turn me off. And no, they werenât influenced by the media.
I have two male relatives to blame for my instinctual aversions.
As a little girl, I was constantly on edge around these two men. Because they had violent, unpredictable tempers. And growing up, I witnessed and was the focus of several outbursts from them.
I never felt safe around them, even when someone else was there.
So in my child brain, I connected safety - when concerning men - into two camps.
Short, thin men were safe. Because my father, who I always felt safe around, was short and thin.
Tall, large men were unsafe. Because those two relatives with the dangerous tempers were over 6 feet and on the large side.
So whatâs the problem I face?
Itâs that by traditional media and body positivity advocates, I, as a plus size woman, am not allowed to find big guys unattractive. And subsequently, not want to date them.
The media says, âwhat fit man is going to want you, a fat girl? Never mind that you eat right and do martial arts. The fact that youâre healthy doesnât mean a skinny guy is going to give you a glance because you arenât a size 2.â
The body positivity advocates say, âhow can you have such double standards? Youâre a plus size woman. Itâs unfair for you to reject guys just because theyâre plus size, too. Youâre buying into the mediaâs propaganda.â
And it makes me feel guilty. Even though logically I know I shouldnât have to be.
Plus size men end up with thin women all the time. So why is the opposite rejected?
And does that mean I will never find love or have to force myself to change when I shouldnât have to in the first place?
