I still think they could have given us a nicer translated version, and although I hate to admit it, the translation of his name in portuguese from portugal was a little better 💔 but wahh, it's still a win that we had galvan to dub him! I absolutely love his voice in the onceler, and I think it suits our greedie quite well !

The Lorax (Onceler) fun fact:

In the brazillian portuguese dub of The Lorax, Onceler's name is translated to "Umavezildo".

Everybody knows that "Onceler" comes from the saying "once upon a time", because he tells a story. So he's someone who tells a story, thus he's the Once-ler. Many jobs and professions end with "er" because it defines someone who does a certain thing.

But in brazillian portuguese his name "Umavezildo" comes from the brazillian portuguese translation of "once upon a time" and it's said "era uma vez": "Uma-Vez-Zildo". What's funny is that the literal translation of this name to english would be something like "once upon a Zildo". In our BR portuguese, we use "zildo" or "ildo" in the end of a word when we want to mock someone, like if a person is boring, we will call them just boring but there are times we will say like "boringzildo" to mock (Chato (boring) = Chatonildo (boring but like mr boring)). There's a clear difference from when you're just calling a person by the word and when you're ending the word with "ildo/zildo". It's a funny mocking by the way, nothing actually offensive. It's like instead of just saying "you're boring!" you're saying "you're mr. boring!" "you're sir boring!". This is what the "Zildo" part of the word means, it makes the word a name; not actually like "mr" or "sir" but like it turns into a name, into a someone. The word itself "Zildo" is an actual name that exists so I believe it comes from that.

The translation of the word "Umavezildo" to english, after having this knowledge, would sound like "The 'once-upon' dude" "once-upon guy". It's not like a role/profession like the original english word "Once-ler", or else it would be like "Umavez-or" or "Umavezador" (like the words "contador (accountant), atuador (actuator), educador (educator)) , he's the "Once-Upon GUY". He's UMA-VEZ-ZILDO.

His mom doesn't call him "Oncie" in brazillian portuguese, she calls him "Zildo", or "Zildinho" (diminutive or affectionate and adorable way of referring to someone like "little Zildo"). Which is funny, because cutting the "Uma-Vez" part of his name, turns it into a normal masculine name a guy would have: Zildo.

Edit: I made a small research and discovered that the meaning of the name Zildo is "shadow" or "the winner"/"the victorious". This is from those websites that tells people the meaning of their names. The meaning of the word was already explained by me.

In the brazillian portuguese version of the Seuss book that I own "O Lórax" (the 2012 movie is called "O Lorax" without the accent), Onceler's name is "Erumavez" (from "Era Uma Vez"). The book calls the Thneeds by the word "Não-Cessidade" which is a pun with the words "não" (no) and "necessidade"(need). So the Thneed is called "No-Need". But in the movie they still have the original Thneed name with no translation or change.

My version of the book was printed in 2022 so the translation wasn't based on the translation of the movie.

Everybody here has watched The Lorax at some point at school and our "How Bad Can I Be" is actually translated to "Am I That Bad?". We love the dub of the song. It's a classic.

This blog itself is meant to organize the Lorax fandom’s various “Secret Santa” styled events, and to share the works created by our participants once each exchange has ended. Participants do not have to follow, but if you’d like to keep tabs, feel free to follow our tag: #unitetheloraxfandom

Here are the rules!

1) To sign up you must LIKE AND REBLOG the official post for the current exchange. That would be this one! We will try to message people once they’ve been added to the participants list, so look out for that!

2) We will be contacting you via Tumblr Direct Messaging (DM) to first confirm your participation, and then later to send you the name of your buddy. But you don't have DMs on, we will be sending it to your tumblr inbox. Make sure you have your inbox open please! You don’t need to have anon on. If we can’t contact you, you will be taken OFF of the list without warning.

3) If you change your URL after signing up, you MUST tell us. If you will be unavailable to answer DMs for more than 3 days, PLEASE tell us as well.

4) Sign-up starts TODAY (December 1st) and will be CLOSED on December 7th 23:59 EST. You MUST reply to our DM to confirm your participation by December 8th, 6:00am EST, or else you will be removed from the participants list.

5) On December 8th, you will be messaged the name of your secret buddy. They must be unaware that you are their Thneedmas Exchange partner until after the period of posting (December 23rd - January 5th) or longer depending on issues with post limit.

6) If you sign up after the cutoff date, your url will be put on a waiting list for the next exchange. There will be no room for late sign-ups.

7) Gifts can be fanart, fanfiction, fan video, etc. If you have any other ideas for your gift, feel free to get creative. Also, please try to keep them related to The Lorax unless you know your buddy would appreciate something non-Lorax related more (like if they have an OC, for example). If your gift is very obviously low-effort/insincere/trolling/AI, you will be banned from future gift exchanges.

8) If you have had drama in the past with another tumblr user, please let us know ahead of time so we can make certain that neither of you are assigned to each other.

9) Buddies will be assigned by the mods, and you will be buddied up randomly. If you don’t receive a buddy after the sign-up period is over, then MESSAGE US IMMEDIATELY! DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE EXCHANGE OR THE LAST DAY OF THE EXCHANGE OR 2 DAYS AFTER THE EXCHANGE.

10) If you have not received your gift in time, you MAY make a request for a makeup one created by one of the mods or makeup gift volunteers; this offer is only valid if you’ve come through with your own partner’s gift, it’s only fair.

Onceler's office analysis 2/2

Ah yes, the second part. Because there's an image limit. That I was totally aware of. Yes.

Before I start rambling about the outside of his office, I wanted to talk a bit about the concept art and the final piece for the desk section, especially the platform it is on.

Onceler's desk platform!

—Not me getting all giddy from the last one— I honestly love the idea of the whole platform thing, being able to go up with all the stairs, and how it was implemented in HBCIB, AND when we get the office shot when he throws his glasses, there are some very subtle signs that it can actually work or pull up stairs from the floor, and the carpet, which should stop at the beginning of the stairs, isn't that visible in the actual scene, but I'm pretty sure it ends there. Because of the image limit that I am totally aware of I won't post the image again, but you can see some lines going around Onceler's desk platform, and looking close enough, you can even see every step of the stairs!

Outside of the office!

Notice how even from very far away, you can see the shadow of his chair in the first picture? Which doesn't happen in the HBCIB shot, but afterwards, almost warning us of where the next scene is taking place. I love every single detail of the outside of the office, the complicated yet elegant window trim with those golden colors, the lamps on each side, the shapes of the balcony railing —Said balcony probably remaining unused because he has no reason to look outside at the damage he's done— And just all the shapes that are going on, not following a pattern but still making sense.

I mean come on, look at how messed up those stairs are, you can even see them in HBCIB, yet they still work so well! This also applies to just so many things in the whole movie, it's almost everywhere, the patterns that don't follow a pattern (if that makes any sense at all???)

Okay I ran out of things to say... I just really enjoy everything about his office and wanted to keep it summed up in a post. Uh. Two posts. Hope you guys enjoyed my rambling about Onceler's office exclusively.
