Black fans in fandom: Listen, we really don't want to see fanart and fanfics of our beloved Black characters being cucked, mutilated, tortured, dehumanised, and sidelined, because it's legitimately detrimental to our community. It tolerates racism further; we all want you guys to stop. Many of you are incredibly microaggressive, so please hold yourselves accountable for that.

I'm sorry for the anti-Blackness you experience daily, but this is what fiction is about; I don't want to acknowledge the racism in our spaces because it challenges us. It evokes our guilt that we haven't expanded our idea of a "safe space" for your community because we're exhaustingly race-blind. I mean, it doesn't mean I'm racist, though! I have mutuals who are people of colour, but it just coincidentally happens they are non-Black! For a small fandom, being another victim of trash adaptation—it is, for sure, undeniably obnoxious. A book where the Jewish diaspora is both metaphorical and literal, the concept of peculiarities, and the world-building that's centered around "time"—I don't have the words to describe how fast I got off from the peculiardom. Honestly, it's quite personal to me because it's so gothic, noir-ish, and it's magically haunting. I wish I would've been immersed with Jacob's character wholly if he wasn't limited through his love life.

It's unfair for the franchise to begin with because I believe the popularity died down after the movie came out. No one is gonna acknowledge the books because all the shit that's made it profound are missing onto the screen. Or, perhaps because it went on until 2021 to the point that more popular stuff uproared that the books collided within the shadows (which is interesting because ToA never got this treatment, but it's R-ck's work. The reviews for it aren't piss, though.) The fanarts are another thing. I've drawn for the fandom, but it's only about Fiona and Hugh. Aside from me, everything else is about fucking Enoch.

While I may enjoy a few ships that are considered problematic and some fictional stories that have reactionary elements, I have lost a lot of respect for self identified proshippers in the wake of many white, and some POC liberal, fandom blogs openly gloating about preferring to donate to AO3 over gofundme. Even aside from Palestinians who these liberals view as all scammers, people set up gofundmes to escape abusive homes or conservative communities, to put food on the table or aid medical expenses. If you think that marginalized people who ask for money deserve to suffer because they didn’t support Copmala btw, you are human garbage and have no understanding of true solidarity.

I’m going to be very blunt with this. Asking people to spare even a dollar for those in need does not make someone an “anti” with “main character syndrome”. It’s fine to enjoy fanfiction and fandom but if you think those hobbies are more important than human lives and that anyone who calls you out is just being entitled, then you need to rethink your priorities. Being asked to have a bare minimum of decency should not make you uncomfortable and being uncomfortable is not inherently bad because some things should make you question your beliefs or your actions.

It’s the same reason leftists ask people to read theory and watch more mature or nuanced media than just kids shows. Not because we hate autistic people with special interests but because even genuinely good progressive children’s media can only tackle social/political issues on a base level. Again, it’s fine to have hyperfixations or participate in fandom but there’s a line. The lives of real people are always more important than your favorite stories, whether it’s abandoning the wizard books for solidarity with trans women or sparing some money for gofundme and listening as opposed to dismissing them all as scams so you can sleep at night.
