The mechanics of her eyes ceased revolving as she and Janeway watched one another. “They sanctioned my research and my mission. We were losing the war against the Klingons. This was all we had left.” “It seems we won’t need any specialized equipment to locate our differences, then,” Janeway said in return, raising a brow. “War or not, meddling with this kind of tech is wrong.”

A hardness overcame Seven then, the alloys in her spine chaining her fractured emotions back together in some grotesque distortion of what Janeway had always insisted they could be. Was this what it meant to be human? This labyrinth of consternation and insecurity and doubt? To feel, from one moment to the next, while drowning under the gravity of her inability to draw any meaningful connections between them? What was the purpose? Janeway found her then, and Seven realized she had dropped into a crouch closer to the habitat floor. The tentative ghost of a palm encapsulated her knee as the Captain crouched before her and Seven carefully deflected its benevolence by righting herself. She feared the touch would melt the metal of the implant concealed beneath the biosuit and burn them both. “Must...you always…touch me?”

The first time I realized Woolsey from Stargate was in Voyager I knew I was gonna love the show.

Ha. And in the process you become grateful your real life friends understand you're actually not a total whack job.

Writers are scary because we’ll take personal trauma and think, "Hmm… what if this happened to my fictional characters but worse?"

“People are staring,” Judith choked out, her mouth going dry. “Forget about them,” Lyris replied, steering Judith's head back to her shoulder. “You say that like it’s easy,” Judith muttered, even as she felt herself falling back into the strange safety of the embrace. “It’s hard not to wonder what they’re seeing.” “You're beautiful, and I’m different,” Lyris said, sounding more terse this time. The gruff timbre of her voice rumbled through every point of contact, a formidable cadence that suggested she wasn’t entirely unaffected by Judith’s admission. “They're going to stare because they don't understand.”

“Judith,” Lyris argued, stepping forward and taking one of her hands. She folded it between her own. Judith looked down at it for a moment, the distant memory of the sight from a time long ago reforming in her mind. Lyris ducked her head a bit until their eyes connected again. “We have to keep this crew safe. We are their only chance–do you understand?”

“This isn’t about the crew.”

“Yes it is,” Lyris insisted. “And it’s also about you.”

“I don’t understand,” Judith pleaded.

“You will,” the Commander replied, squeezing her hand. “I promise, you will. But I have to get them out. I have to get you out, Judith. No matter the cost.”

“Ithaca is dying, Lyris,” Judith said weakly.

Lyris’ grip on her hand became crushing. She raised her chin, her jaw jutting outward and tensing in the seconds before she spoke. The voltaic growl when she did sent a shiver through to Judith’s core.

“And I’ll make her rend every fleck of metal from my bones before I let her take you with her.”

Synopsis:

When Lieutenant Judith Quinn is jolted out of stasis by Commander Lyris to find their starship crippled and adrift, she’s dragged into a nightmare unlike any she’s ever known.
