Jack’s Speech

“We live in a world where we’re always in our own little bubbles. Whether it’s in our cars, at our desks in our little broom closet of an office, in our home.

In our cars it’s ‘my daily drives’, and “you are in my way.”

When we get to work it’s ‘my promotion’, “how dare anyone get in the way of that.”

When we’re home it’s “my god what a rough day I had.”

But you know what will take you out of the shadows and make everything a little brighter?

Love.

I’m not just talking strictly about a romantic type of love. Because, let’s face it, a lot of people hide behind that. Putting themselves in emotional limbo based on a feeling someone else has about them, and sometimes that brand of love just isn’t available. What I’m talking about is just regular, plain old love. Love of oneself. Love of one another. Love used as a weapon, instead of hate. To defeat hate - hate of what’s different than us, hate of what we don’t understand, hate of others, hate of oneself.

It’s so easy to get caught up in our day to day lives stuck in the intricacies of what we think matters. Being late to work, getting that promotion, making sure your bank account has enough zeros in it, making sure we can keep up with the Joneses. But you know what will actually make your life more rich?

Love.

Love will make you richer, and loving youself? Well that can make you richest of all.

You don’t need someone else to find your self worth. Yes, it does help if they see it in you, even if sometimes you can’t see it yourself. But love, I promise you, is always the right answer.

We deal with scary things in this world. You hear the news we talk about on the daily. It is scary, and it sucks, and most of the time sadly it doesnt have a happy ending. And we aren’t promised tomorrow. Not one of us - rich, poor, happy, sad. We do not know that tomorrow will be there for us. So we have to make each day mean something. We have to make each day count. And that should start and end with love.

Start by loving the little things until it’s a given. Then take on the bigger stuff.

Love your parents. Even if they didn’t understand you, or know what you were going through, or made things rough on you.

Love your friends, because they put up with your crazy ass.

But most importantly, love yourself. Because there’s only one of you, and despite the fact that you can see every little flaw, every bad thing you’ve ever done, every time you’ve let yourself down. Love yourself, because you are worthy of love, because you should be loved. And if we keep trying, we keep loving, all those little things we see as so damn important wont matter, and then the only thing you will be left with is the good, is the love. And I promise you that will be the best version of you there can be.

So that’s all I’ve got guys. Just, you know, love.

Love is all you need.”

If you don’t have means to a therapist or mental health professional

Check out therapistaid.com. There’s worksheets there that you can download for free.

Of course it would be a lot more beneficial if you have a therapist to help you through it but not everyone has access to one.

It’s a free site where you can have free downloads of worksheets on many things.

If there’s something there that you think would be helpful, print it out and complete the worksheet on your own.

It’s hard to be accountable for yourself but at least there’s a way for you to have some insight and work on yourself.

Just a reminder because apparently people don’t realize this, but the rainbow gay pride flag isn’t like…a gay male pride flag? it was literally meant as a pride flag for everyone in the community. not that there’s anything wrong with specific identities having their own flag, but i keep seeing ppl post flag sets as if the rainbow ride flag only represents gay men and saying that not including every single other flag known in existence means you’re excluding people when no it’s not the rainbow flag is for everyone

You know what? Happy Pride to everyone still in the closet.

To the people who don’t feel safe enough to come out to their friends or family or community or all three.

To those who feel like they can’t come out because they just feel confused about their gender or sexuality and don’t know how to come out when they don’t even know what label to use.

To the people who fear coming out publicly because it may put their job or career at risk.

To the people who haven’t come out because they don’t want anything to change about their relationships.

To the people who see Pride festivals and parades being advertised or talked about, who look up their local one with the understanding that they cannot attend. To those who feel distanced from Pride because you feel like you cannot partake in the celebration because only you know that it’s a celebration meant also for you.

Pride Month is for you, too. Be proud of yourself even if you can’t be out. Be proud of your journey of self-acceptance, even if you haven’t found acceptance outside of yourself just yet. There’s no rush. There’s no pressure, just because it’s pride month.

Pride Month is already for you.
